I gotta say... the new one is a win so far. And luckily, they didn't overdo it with the metal, either. I was kinda worried they wouldn't make it spooky and frenetic like the old games did with the 80's horror feel. Having the original 3 games on disc is a great bonus.
My stepdad owned the arcade machine version of this when I was younger. Life was never the same. haha. we played this all the time. Love this game. Very good arcade game.
I personally feel that this Splatterhouse chap is a rather intriguing and interesting individual and has some quite exemplary traits. The man slays undead heathens and has a marked lack of fear when it comes to outrageous situations.
this is awesome! probably the first arcade game i ever played. i thought it was so bad ass with the blood and guts, hitting people with 2x4s. now i see there is meat cleavers and shotguns, GUY WITH CHAINSAW ARMS! this made made me happy.
Apparently the arcade version of this is gonna be available on Nintendo's Wii Virtual Console soon. Namco announced a bunch of arcade games they'd be adding. Just hope that it gets a US release, cuz so far the VC release is Japan only.
The mask being changed to red was to prevent possible copyright infringement issues. In the first Splatterhouse game, Rick is a virtual clone of Jason Voorhees. I also do not recall the game being banned, only censored heavily compared to its Japanese counterpart.
Splatterhouse was based off many horror movies so there are a lot of things in common. Rick's mask has super natural powers, vs. Jason's who's is just for show.
I was playing this game when i was in grade in 3rd grade or so back when i was still a little kid on the japanese PC engine console. brings back the good old days.
This is the arcade version, there is also a port for Turbo Grafix 16 which looks nowhere near this good, but I personally think that the music and sound effects from the TG16 sound better than the arcade version.
I dunno why, but this game always gave me the creeps when I was younger.. I remember the intro being scary as fuck when the horizont just pans to the right and first everythings normal but then there's like hung up corpses in the trees and whatnot. This game still kinda gives me the creeps.. the same "feel" lingers in my mind that I had when I played it back in the day :) Awesome playing though!! :D
I just finished beating the TurboGrafx 16 version (Wii's Virtual Console) and it really didn't seem like the version I played as a child. I guess I was playing the Arcade version back then because the graphics and gore level are much more in line with what I remember. GREAT GAME!
@TheBudy656 Actually, when the new game comes out, they are going to actually include the arcade version and the two sega genesis sequels as unlockables...
I love the thought of an extreme guts-and-gore horror game where you fight the devil himself. I'm pretty sure that's the only thing that could ever make Jack Tomphson STFU.
@Megamanrp If I recall, you have to jump and hit down and kick just as you hit the ground - it's kind of hard to time correctly. It's also the way to defeat the dual chainsaw guy if you dont have enough bullets.
The whole atmosphere of the mansion, they poltergeist-like rooms, and the monsters/demons you face along the way, plus the chilling inter-weaved story bits like in splatterhouse 3, plus next-gen graphics would have made for a killer survival-horror title. But instead we get a cartoonish platformer with just hints at the former glory of its predecessors. Disappointed I am, for this was one of my favorite games as a kid.
They made the mask purple because there was concern that a white hockey mask mimicked Jason Voorhies character props to closely. They simply changed the color of the mask to offer an alternative coloring.
Very few games of the 16 bit era have ever creeped me out like this one does, this game is very depressing and sad, but i love it in all it's nightmarish violent glory.
Inside, a scuffle with unseen enemies occurs, and Rick is knocked unconscious and left for dead, while Jennifer is kidnapped. While Rick is unconscious, the "Terror Mask" (sometimes referred to as the "Hell Mask", commonly shortened to just "The Mask") attaches itself to him. Rick wakes and finds that he cannot remove the Mask, which he recognises as an ancient Mayan sacrificial mask from West's documents he had been studying.
I don't know if it's just me, but when I play this on the 2010 remake disc, some of the sound effects seem to be missing. For example, there's no "woo" sound when I swing a weapon. Also, the music in the other two games doesn't really sound right. I know these are minor things, but I just want to know if anyone else is experiencing this.
in the beggining of lvl1, its funny how he just punches the monsters and their heads explode! lol! classic video game!! i cant wait till the new one comes out!!
I think this might be a good idea, like if you beat the game with a certain ending, you can play either splatterhouse 1, 2 or 3. It would be cool, to play the new one, then to play the older splatterhouses for the fun.
On further inspection, how the heck does Rick get in the poltergeist room anyway?what, does he just teleport there instantly from the room he climbed to?Does the hole in the floor just dissapear?
Hollywood has produced some crummy horror movies in the last few years. Will any producer ever realize the scary and innovative potential of translating 'Splatterhouse' to the big screen?
You could always search the plot in WIkipedia! The game is awesome! The "Terror Mask" or the "bone mask" was an mayan Artifact. The mask has its own Sentient mind and it feeds from human's suffering.
wow until i played this on the new splatterhouse game i thought "This looks so easy" but its not! Its hard as hell! Gonna have to memorise stuff ^_^ Like that bit with the chandalier got me,
this incredible, how a company known for its games: Pacman, Mappy, Galaxyan, Solvalou, Risolvalou, Xevious, Galaga, Dig dug, Tekken, Ace combat, Ridge racer, Soul Calibur; could make such a survival-horror like Splatterhouse.
lol Nice. My 2 and 3 year old love my Resident Evil games. The original creepy ones, not the newer action ones. Never got to play this game when I was younger, but I'm sure I'd've loved it, too XD ...and what's this about a new one??
@WebVMan, he doesn't wear shoes, thats why they match his skin, cus it is his skin lol. As for his clothes, I thought it was just some clothes he had on lol.
Wow O_O Thanks for explaining. Yeah the turbo-grafx16 is on VC. LOL The funny thing is that has kind obsession with poor Rick since it keeps coming back and wanting him to put itself on.
Discovering it gives him incredible strength, he decides to take advantage of its power and use it to rescue Jennifer. All of this information is given in the instruction manual for the TurboGrafx-16 port.
from what i heard, u will be able to play this and another arcade splatterhouse as an unlockable bonus on the xbox360 and ps3.what i don't know is how they'll be unlocked
@CatNasty i remember seeing this game in a few arcades, it was around 86 i think, but not many people used to play it. machine was always empty. so my guess is, it didn't create a scandal because it wasn't nearly as popular (for some reason) as mk. granted, it had a cult following, just not on the same scale as mk. i remember so well, i was a arcade addict...^^ i agree with you, when i first saw that game, i was what, 11 years old, it seemed like the epitome of violence to me...^^
Game over before it starts? Confusion. But I had this game for Turbo Graphics. I LOVED it..couldn't get very far because I was just a kid. The system still works I should get it out and hook it up again. Wow, near the end, it looked like those hands that jump were fliping himoff but there really making the "come here" gesture.
@lovelorn8888 It certainly has it's faults, such as repetition, buggyness, mediocre graphics and even lack of sound in some areas. And yeah, I agree that it doesn't have the "scare factor" that the other titles did. But the over-the-top violence combined with the metal soundtrack still allowed me to have a lot of fun with it. However, if Namco were to fix these issues for a possible sequel, then it has potential to be one of the greatest games ever.
Seeing classic gaming like this makes me sad when i look upon what the new splatterhouse looks like. They had a chance to take this seemingly perfect franchise and make it 1000 times better for the next gen consoles, but instead they took it and completely ruined it.
Well... Jump *hold the jump button* while walking either left or right, then as Rick comes down from the jump hold diagonally down-left or down-right and press the attack button JUST before he's feets touch the ground... It's kinda tricky.
@TheUnknown644 well you see. after each level he did he stoped and redid it you know? so it looked like he wen't through the whole thing without getting hit.
This is fucking awesome. I remember the first time I saw this game in Rimini, here in Italy. I was a kid and this game fucking scared me a lot. Wasted a lot of coins on that, my parents were not happy. The trick of getting the two shotguns together in the woods was taught to me by a friend, I was keeping on getting cut by that asshole with the sack on his head
I gotta say... the new one is a win so far. And luckily, they didn't overdo it with the metal, either. I was kinda worried they wouldn't make it spooky and frenetic like the old games did with the 80's horror feel.

My stepdad owned the arcade machine version of this when I was younger. Life was never the same. haha. we played this all the time. Love this game. Very good arcade game.
I love this! God bless the guy who first said "Hey you think a video game could be violent?"

Just hope that it gets a US release, cuz so far the VC release is Japan only.
i love the possessed room, and how the music gets more slashery with each item that comes to life
The mask being changed to red was to prevent possible copyright infringement issues. In the first Splatterhouse game, Rick is a virtual clone of Jason Voorhees. I also do not recall the game being banned, only censored heavily compared to its Japanese counterpart.

Was struggling on the chain man, did not know you could do that trick with the shotties, thanks for the vid man
I love the thought of an extreme guts-and-gore horror game where you fight the devil himself.

WOW! I remember being a kid in the arcade watching others play this because I was too poor to play. oh the 80's...
The whole atmosphere of the mansion, they poltergeist-like rooms, and the monsters/demons you face along the way, plus the chilling inter-weaved story bits like in splatterhouse 3, plus next-gen graphics would have made for a killer survival-horror title. jeeeeeeez you obliterated that cross boss like it's nothing. that thing kills me nearly all the time.
This is the most overlooked, underrated game of all time.
Never did like this game but i know a good player when i see one and that was quite entertaining well done.
I think its funny that on the stage screens showing what stage youre on Rick has no sleeves, but in game playing he has sleeves.
Probably the most bloodiest, funnest, and most disturbing Arcade game i've EVER played....I LIKE IT!! SPLATTERHOUSE FTW!!
WOW ! Love the Way how he fights vs the Room , and dont gets hit :D Nice one =)
They'll proally put the TG-16 on there. I DO love how they left the floating candles in that port ^_^
In my opinion Splatter House is the best arcade game ever. It was relased in 1986!
So much time and tokens wasted on this game back in the day.... never ever seen it finished :) thanks for posting!
epic game!! creepy enemies and background, terrific music and lovely sounds!!
HOLY SH*T, THAT'S THE GAME I WAS PLAYING WHEN I WAS 5 YEAR OLD
*nostalgia bomb*
i took the time, saw both parts to this, and i gotta say GOOD JOB. u have mad skillz.
whoa i played this when i was a kid, this is 1988's game but i played it on 1999, 11 years? no problem for a kid
i love the splatterhouse series so much!
the Godfather of survival horror... this game disturbed me when I first saw it in arcades
in the beggining of lvl1, its funny how he just punches the monsters and their heads explode! lol! classic video game!! i cant wait till the new one comes out!!

It would be cool, to play the new one, then to play the older splatterhouses for the fun.
on stage 5 boss it kind of reminded me of a martial arts movie cause of how much kicking and punching you are doing
On further inspection, how the heck does Rick get in the poltergeist room anyway?what, does he just teleport there instantly from the room he climbed to?Does the hole in the floor just dissapear?

What else can you play this arcade version on?
Great Let's Play. What'd you use to record it?
In the turbo grafix version they dont show the alter in the chapel so the music really doesn't make sense for that version.
wow until i played this on the new splatterhouse game i thought "This looks so easy" but its not! Its hard as hell!
Gonna have to memorise stuff ^_^

Wow, I wasn't expecting the game quality to be this good. What console was it on? Genesis? SNES? Arcade?
Resident Evil just has Zombies, but Splatter House throws all kinds of scary shit at you!
Holy crap that monster with dual chainsaws must be a relative of the chainsaw man with the sack on his head from Resident Evil 4 xD
Yeah Inveted cross as a boss in a church level. I dont remember that from when I was a kid. They cencored alot of this game on TG16
@AlternateArtisan No, this one is more graphic than the other ports.
Sicko gore... wonderfull.
Halfdead bodies.. blood.. gory bosses... this game sets the standard of a new game genre.
lol Nice. My 2 and 3 year old love my Resident Evil games. The original creepy ones, not the newer action ones. Never got to play this game when I was younger, but I'm sure I'd've loved it, too XD
...and what's this about a new one??
my respects to who ever was playing this game on this video, thats some good ass play.
Great Gameplay to the person that played this.
When Rick puts on that mask, he looks likes Jason Voorhees only he trying to save someone and kick evil butt.
@WebVMan, he doesn't wear shoes, thats why they match his skin, cus it is his skin lol. As for his clothes, I thought it was just some clothes he had on lol.
they redid the sounds and some of the stage for the arcade version. It was different in the turbografx version
Wow O_O Thanks for explaining. Yeah the turbo-grafx16 is on VC. LOL The funny thing is that has kind obsession with poor Rick since it keeps coming back and wanting him to put itself on.
@TheDARKYOSHI64 I've read that the new one that came out has this and its sequels as unlockables.
@qwq45 your rite shame they dont do many arcades now days.
this is one of the best games ever.
last time i played this on the arcade was in 1995
This was an arcade game that was banned in the US.
6:30 Jesus FUCK. You eliminated Biggy Man in seconds! Good job!
Discovering it gives him incredible strength, he decides to take advantage of its power and use it to rescue Jennifer. All of this information is given in the instruction manual for the TurboGrafx-16 port.

Were those hands at the end giving you the bird?
Was this game not a big hit for Namco? It is not on any of the PS2 compilations. Oh well. I have never played this game. Looks like a bad ass game.
@lovelorn8888 It certainly has it's faults, such as repetition, buggyness, mediocre graphics and even lack of sound in some areas. i hear that the new splatterhouse will have 3 older ones as well seems like a great deal to me :)
never seen the game before, but the me from 1995 wishes he had this :P
looks sweet
Seeing classic gaming like this makes me sad when i look upon what the new splatterhouse looks like. They had a chance to take this seemingly perfect franchise and make it 1000 times better for the next gen consoles, but instead they took it and completely ruined it.
Once I beated the poltergeist boss. And then the chandelier fell down, and I died. Funniest thing ever.
@bonafiedjay but if this was an arcade game then they always looked better than the older games
Well...
Jump *hold the jump button* while walking either left or right, then as Rick comes down from the jump hold diagonally down-left or down-right and press the attack button JUST before he's feets touch the ground...
It's kinda tricky.
7:50 That always freaked me out. Ahh the memories
I remembered playing this while I was in Kansas City.
09:05 that inverted cross was changed in the domestic version
@Araqnydd don't forget that you don't need shoes to do it either.
@amdreh
This game is hard in later stages, especially when fighting the womb.
I always used to shudder at the thought of being stuck in a room with all those blood sucking worm things..
well thats why in the 2 sequals they change the mask's look
@TheUnknown644 well you see. after each level he did he stoped and redid it you know? so it looked like he wen't through the whole thing without getting hit.
@kclite Ever played Deadrising?
i bet these 3 arcade games that come with the new one are more fun than the actual game, i just bet.
@TheJacklopz Capcom made Mega Man but they also made Resident Evil.
I never noticed that the hands will flip you the bird if they miss.
0:33 that noise when you press the start button scares me
you guys gettin the new splatterhouse? it just came out
This is fucking awesome.
7:55 - it was so funny! Like he was dancing!!!
By the power of Vorhees' mask, you are an unstopable machine of destruction.
That was fucking slick with the boss of stage III
The saddest part is the sequels are nowhere near as gruesome and graphic.
Wow, a platforming game where drips of water DON'T hurt you? I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with me own eyes.
woah what happen in the second stage did it glitch out on u?
