'Manipur Conflict is Well-Planned, Funded and Executed By People in Power; Obvious Who They Are'

- In a bold and defiant interview, where “people in power” are repeatedly accused of planning, funding and executing the conflict in Manipur, which, in turn, is said to have started with deliberate coordinated attacks by Meitei groups and their instigators on Kuki people, the highly regarded Director of the North Eastern Social Research Centre in Guwahati has said “the conflict was well-planned, funded and executed with precision by people in power”. Although Father Walter Fernandes repeatedly refused to identify who he meant by “people in power”, he, nonetheless, left little doubt he was referring to Biren Singh and the BJP in Manipur but, at least, on one occasion he also seemed to include the government in Delhi. Father Walter said it was “obvious” who he had in mind. When The Wire pointed out to Father Walter that he was specifically not denying he was pointing the finger at Biren Singh and the BJP in Manipur and, possibly, Amit Shah in Delhi, Father Walter kept quiet, thus clearly suggesting he was not denying it. When The Wire said to him he was saying the people who rule in Manipur and Delhi are responsible for the conflict in Manipur Father Walter replied “it comes to that”.
The first half of this 45-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire reveals aspects of the crisis in Manipur that we are not aware of and which clearly suggest that the origin and cause of the problem is possibly different to what we have so far understood. Father Walter wrote about this in an article for The Telegraph on the 25th of June but expanded, in considerably greater detail, in this interview.

And you know what else they are pushing for? New organization of Lok Sabha, which will favor more populous states. I have waited for 60 days and more and it is beyond my logical thinking on how such a conflict can go on in such a tiny state with a tiny population compared to so many parts of the country. With so much technological advancements and intelligentia I am baffled to see that the violence cannot be contained to this day. People are left to kill each other and die. How many more lives needs to be sacrificed before some sense of peace and normalcy is restored? Innocent lives on both sides are lost.

The situation at Manipur is the outcome of the polarisation politics at play championed by the powers at Centre and State. The same is being orchestrated across the country and finally caught flame in Manipur, triggered by the Highcourt judgement.
One can only hope that wisdom prevails in Manipur and the situation de-escalates at the earliest. And that no such incidents occur in any part of India.

What really saddens me and is worrisome is the fact that pitting people against each other on the pretext of what one believes, or who one is, what are sub culture is, is a dangerous pretext, based on which no amount of progress can happen. Diversity of thought, and being is not the issue, it is pegging and inciting violence based on this diversity that is key. How does a country disown it's own people, I will not take names of examples on the international arena where ppl are singled out, and now a trend has begun where the govt uses the civilian segment to be the frontliners inflicting this violence and backed by the army. Sound familiar???? If the rest of the country are not careful about this, not now but surely in the future this will come back to haunt us. There is no will in the govt to care about the people who don't fit their ideal population type, and that irrespective of who, or what, we believe, or not, should take cognizance of. We are carrying the colonial mindset of divide and conquer unconsciously, bitter truth to face. Got to face our demons sometime.
What are you trying to say? The high Court gives a dictum of equal rights to the meiti and the Christian majority kuki is opposing it. Is this what Jesus taught you guys?
