    In my current campaign, the party has had several encounters with Bahamut, The Platinum Dragon.
    I’ve flavored this cosmically good-aligned paragon of metallic dragons as basically Sam Elliot…he has that low, whiskey-smooth voice & wanders the Material Plane in his human form, interacting with mortals.
    He’s taken the party’s kobold under his wing, and now that kobold has become a Glory Paladin with platinum scales, eager to spread the glory of Bahamut.
    The kobold has a VERY chaotic personality, which is a nice contrast to the easy-going nature of Bahamut.

    I have Syndrax the Ashen Wyrm. Their once scarlet scales were burned black by the flames of the Summer Archfae it devoured, and its body became swollen and cracked with elemental energy. The Firewyrm appears as a black dragon to the untrained eye, but few get close enough to distinguish the difference before being scorched by its desiccating aura or disintegrated by it's super-heated breath that can overcome resistances and disintegrates a target that is dropped to 0 by it

    i would say, that one need to remember that as specifically spelled out, that these tables are alternatives, to the standard.
    that you can use when you build your world, some of them would have a huge impact on how the world works and how mortals would treat dragons in this world...
    like a world were mortals can "ascend" to become a dragon, would have mortals treat dragons far differently than a world with normal reproduction....

      I would agree, except that as far as I'm aware the natural way is not mentioned anywhere in D&D 5e. Nothing about how often dragons lay eggs, how many eggs they give birth to, incubation periods, the differences between different dragon eggs, nothing. It's as if the standard way doesn't even exist.

    I have a Young Red Dragon (female) in my game at the moment that i have named I'skaarende'yal (Skaare). So far the PCs have only encountered her once. She recently moved into an area of the Underdark close to where the PCs are discovering (the ancient Dwarven city, now Drow City, of Ultoksamrin). She's the daughter of one of the possible BBEG's, an Ancient Red Dragon/Wyrm. I play her as a version of Violet Beauregard from the original Willy Wonka film. Basically an extremely spoilt and entitled child. Went down really well the players. :D She stole some of the parties magic items (the ones they weren't actually using/attuned to), and this allowed me to rotate in new items easily after they finally met their first proper magic shop in the city. The officials of the city are slowly becoming aware of her presence in the area, and bounties for her "removal" (whether that be by killing or negotiation/finding her a 'better location' for her Lair) are incoming. If she is killed, i'm toying with the concept of her actually being a young Drow girl who found/touched a Dragon Orb and was possessed by the spirit of Skaare. Make them feel bad for killing her, basically... Also, if she dies, then her father will turn his quite significant powers towards the party, to make their life even harder.

    I won't get too wrapped up in changes in the lore. I'll take what I like to enhance, not break, the lore I have already established. In my game, those ways of reproduction in Fizzban's are alternatives, because when two dragons really love each other...

    Before this book can out i already had a idea to put a now gone order of dragon monks in a temple where they bathed in dragons blood and meditated atop their own pile of gold to try and become more draconic, and to acend they'd turn into an egg. But they'd be unable to hatch without the proper circumstances, leaving most of the entire temple completely full of dragon eggs that couldn't hatch. And they had a protector who was previously a human monk who was part of this order, but after a botched ritual he became a silver half dragon, and his friend got turned into a drake, so he has the statistics of a high level drakewarden as he's abandoned his monk tradition, but he still feels the need to watch over it, to make sure nothing is stolen or misused. I added the drakewardem part to this character after the book came out though, and I think it made a big and cool difference

    I think the different ways of introducing dragon eggs is a really cool reflection of different genre elements. Like. In the Waterhorse movie the Waterhorse just reincarnates. I think it's cool as an alternative to **slaps hands multiple times** *Boning*
    This is a good way to tell your players what is Distinctive about dragons as creatures. They're also E for everyone contet

      Im sorry i disagree, wotc has done a major disservice to alot of the old lore. Most everyone wanted an update and expansion to the lore of many other dragons. Now we are told to trash the history, they didnt even take 2 sentances to give what the original lore was. Its like going to a famous resturaunt, ordering the signature dish and getting a turd on a plate. When you complain your told the new chef decided to reimagine the dish in a new way. Its still a turd on a plate.

    • @stephenlucas8836
      @stephenlucas8836 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I never had a strong connection to them, outside a unique breath weapon, I felt that the song and steel were better suited and more interesting as a draconic lifestyle than their own breed. It sounds more interesting to me that there is a group of dragons of different kinds who want to fit into humanoid society than them just being some obscure offshoots. I think why this ball feels so dropped was not including them as a dragon organization, a coalition of dragons pushing their race to secretly cohabitate with humanoids to better their kind.
      Is more interesting if is a group of metallic, chromatic, and gems dragons than just two good-aligned offshoots that wanted to live as humans because it’s just their racial quirk.

      @@craigconklin6702 They did do that official statement earlier in the year that all lore prior to 5th edition was being thrown out completely as they don't want to be burdened with the past. Instead they are only taking inspiration from it and doing their own thing with it to effectively soft reboot everything to a similar degree as what TV and Hollywood has been doing for years with everyone's childhood favorites.

    The second part of Parthenogenesis where it says "or impose that responsibility on others." is a bit concerning. As I cannot help but to picture a dragon pointing at someone and willing them to get pregnant with a clutch of dragon eggs. Followed by telling them that they better take care of them or be eaten and then flying off.

      Edit - For evening more fun the over arching goal of the campaign for the character could be getting child support from the dragons hoard.

    Another thing you can do with the damage absorption thing using that red dragon example is they can fight the dragon in or near a volcano and the dragon could dive into the lava pool to heal that way.

    I got this book because I’m creating a world with dragons being the centre focus of it. That being said my prayers are going through Icewind Dale rn so I figured why not use this section to make a white dragon. And needless to say my players were quite happy and more importantly terrified of the encounter and I’m pretty happy with the tool set in this book it’s going to help me with things going forward.

    I think one of the more interesting considerations, at least as a DM, is the section that describes the age groups of dragons does give them approximate tiers of play relevancy, e.g Wyrmlings being levels 1-4. This can quite easily be used as a foundation to build a campaign where the players are in fact dragons. It would take a little finagling as a DM, and would be very different from a standard campaign, but it is still an interesting possibility. I would recommend it for something like a 1-2 player campaign, but you can probably make it work for more.

    The reincarnation bit should have something like 1d4 days later to ensure the possible hatching. The problem then becomes if something else won't eat the egg. The magical crafting sounds like these dragons are on the demigod level which can be a bit much unless the ancient dragons are designed that way. Draconic Transformation sounds like 2nd ed version of Draconians. The dragon conclave sounds closer to the old fashion mating but party style.
    As for the half dragon origins, I like most of them. The forbidden fruit might be interest, the love child is always a classic, the blood thing sounds a little bit like vampire, cradle favor could be fun, hoard thieves could be some story fun especially if the treasure is "cursed" and the transformation is forced unless the treasure is returned.
    There is still no Gem Dragon deity? If not, then how are they explained? I have yet to get the book.

    At first I was a bit annoyed by the dragon reproduction cycle changes, because there is so much potential for social and motivational drives with paired mating.
    But the idea that even if you destroyed all dragons they would come back anyway, that they are so intrinsic to the material plane, you can not simply physically destroy them, is really cool to me, and ya they should also have mythological ways of spawning too.

    I’m not saying Ted’s opinion is wrong, but want to offer a different viewpoint.
    I don’t quite understand the sentiment of being dissatisfied with the DnD canon when DnD is a game that happens in our imagination. I just take all of the lore as inspiration and tweak whatever I want. In my current campaign something that the book described as a false rumor became a main plot point.

    • @thurismundbotheric7598
      @thurismundbotheric7598 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you familiar with the concept where if you erase a certain part of history, you are doomed to repeat it, because a similar concept applies here where "If we get rid of all this old lore that people enjoy, we can write anything we want and nobody can stop us." Take the drow controversy from earlier this year, by erasing the part of their lore where Lolth deceived them into betraying the elven pantheon and their kin, she caused them to fall from grace and become an army of zealots willing to do anything for her, by adding in the concept of "not all drow are evil" they have effectively destroyed decades of work that had been built upon by several parties in various media over the years, and the same is true here for dragons and other creatures/races in D&D. I personally hope that WOTC causes their company to crash and burn so hard at this point, that Hasbro winds up selling them off to somebody else, preferably either Games Workshop or the newly reformed TSR.

    While some of those reproduction options sound kind of interesting (and make a lot of sense given the more isolationist nature of most dragons), it still feels odd to me that wotc would put in all this effort and go out of their way just to make it that dragons don't have sex. Almost seems like they're attacking the horny bard trope by going "you can't seduce the dragon because it's asexual!" or something. Was this a thing in earlier editions?

    • @stephenlucas8836
      @stephenlucas8836 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think the reproduction chart is more about how to make dragons feel more mystical and alien in a hombre world rather then standard sex. Also a replacement so WoTC don’t have to write about dragon copulation in their book.

    It's a good thing that I have ignored and will continue to ignore what WOTC considers "canon." My world, my canon. If that means I have to reach into older editions or 3rd-party sources, or even create my own, then so be it. Asgorath, Sardior, etc. all exist in my world.
