This is why this is one of my favorite beat em ups period. Like the gold pieces and the money aren't just pointless score boosts, they actively make your character stronger and more dangerous and the game compensates for that by throwing harder enemies at you if you level up too early
I loved leveling up and seeing your knight's mundane armor and sword/axe grow in size and become shining silver and gold. Very much like The King of Dragons and Golden Axe. Great times, playing with friends and shoving quarter after quarter into the machines.
lol, the music of Knights of the Round was far better than Warriors of Fate in which one could hardly listen to what the game was playing in the background. it mimicked western-style music so obvious that one could identify organ sounds on many occasions/stages, such as the king's castle, etc, etc. One could hear this kind of organ sounds in some other games released back in the 90s'. For example, Final Fantasy 6, which was released on Super Nintendo. It was a common phenomenon at the time. Remember that there was an electronic keyboard boom in the 90s as well that was related to mimic the biggest instruments in the world, organs. Back to the BGM, on the contrary, the BGM of Warriors of Fate was just a mess. It couldn't be called music, maybe the worst BGM I had listened to at the moment. It literally sounded like a Chinese-style opera, lol, imagine, a storyteller was telling a story of "东风吹,战鼓擂,现在世上谁怕谁","打,狠狠打!",于是 一通乱战,史称“三国志/演义"😂😂😂; So one could bearly hear any pleasing piece in the BGM, especially in a noisy arcade game center. It could be the reason why Capcom introduced or stressed sound effects in the 16bit sound source that the game boards could offer, such as attention-drawing voice acting, powerful drums, sounds of swords slashing flesh, and hammers crushing enemies' body, etc, etc. But, the gameplaying system of Warriors of Fate was far more advanced, deeper than Knights of the Round, in which Capcom embedded many designs of the newest, most successful, epoch-making game they developed ever in the 90s', Street Fighter 2. On the contrary again, the most useful gameplaying strategy in Knights of the Round was normal attacks(plain A/attack), which wasn't too far from Final Fight, the originator of beat 'em up games.

Great game and literally flawless gameplay. In my opinion, Capcom were simply the best when it came to beat 'em ups during the late 80s, early 90s. Both side-scrolling and 1v1. There were other big guns back then too but no-one touched Capcom after Final Fight and Street Fighter 2 respectively. Although Technõs' Double Dragon will forever be founder and the great grandfather of them all.
Always cut big treasures and big food. You'll get more points and/or health that way. This game is the rare exception where the whole is NOT greater than the sum of its parts.
This guy was incredibly competent already, but when he got to 10:29 and discovered he could turn his horse to face backwards as well as forwards... then he was unstoppable
The Engrish in the opening is brilliant. "Only the Holy Grail can release this world from attain the chaos. You should be able to find it because you were able to sacred sword." It's like a Polandball comic or something.

These games always bring me back to my childhood, playing video games(arcad in this particular case) was my addiction and I was so good that I bit almost all of them(the ones I liked back then) only with one coin, especially since I didn't have money and I would hardly earn 1 coin. I long for that era where everything was simple but full of joy ^_^
@@NeoPhoenix-99 games never look hard when you're watching someone who has played a lot of it and is very good at it. i've been playing the snes version on normal and have yet to beat it. it gives you 18 lives but some of the bosses are very tough and eat through those lives.
I have played this game as a child so often. Did it often to the last level, but the boss I never defeated. Asked me as a child what probably comes after, did not know that he was the end boss. Respect!!!! Well done!!!
Played the heck out of this game when there was an arcade at the college I went to back in the day before they remodeled the student union building and demolished the arcade and bowling alley there. Lots of good memories playing this game. The music takes me back to freshman year and playing this a lot along with the Spawn arcade game.

the only beat em ups that look gorgeous to this day are the ones from capcom! they made these with such care! king of dragons... final fight... captain comando... cadilacs and dinosaurs... punisher... theyre classics that will never fade!
King of Dragons was lame, Punisher wasn't much better while Capt Commando was good but still wouldn't say it's the same level as this one, never mind Final Fight or Cadillacs & Dinosaurs

As a fan of Arthurian Legend, I always took great pleasure in stepping into the shoes of Bishounen Anime Lancelot, as he put the numerous scoundrels of Britannia to the sword. Always a pleasure to watch playthroughs of these games. Warms an old man's heart, it does.

I have a memory of me and other two kids spending a relatively hefty amount of pocket change to finish this one - we did! We were so pleasantly surprised by the "level up" and new armor! This is such a nice memory.
One of my all-time favorites arcade game. Reminds me of middle-school year after school at Stuffed Pizzas. THis game was right next to Street Fighter II Championship Edition

It is not garbage, true, but not comparable. This one even has better graphics and all but technically lacks a lot, has a bad damage system (balance between how much you damage with your attacks and how much damage the enemy does), the enemy has some invulnerabilities (pretty abused by the AI) and the controls are too clunky to be practical (specifically, the block move but not only). The game has everything to be a fantastic game. The quarter muncher greed ruined it.
In this game; Parceval with beard, reminds me a lot to the old Kratos. Is in physically aspect, very similar to him. 38:05 Arthur: Excalibur, hope! Rest of the Knights: Hope!

This was my first exposure to the Arthurian legend as a kid, so ever since then whenever I see a new adaptation I wonder why is Lancelot not a blonde chad or why are they not fighting samurais and giant robots.

at first i would ask why he keeps attacking the treasure chests even by accident. But nevermind, i did the math. 3 gold bags = 420 points, which is better than the chest's 400 points. So.. keep slashing away slash happy.
Not to mention the samurai. The armor he's wearing didn't come into use until after 1100 AD, and the katana wasn't invented until the Kamakura Period (~1100 - 1300 AD) while the Arthurian legends took place around 500 AD, over 600 years earlier.
10 year old me loved this game to death, together with Vendetta and 64th street. 38 year old me still does. Maybe even more now. So nostálgic. Btw level 2 boss gives Ganondorf vibes

Double Dragon wasn't the first beat 'em up though.
The founder is Renegade, or in Japan known as a Kunio game, it is the real grandfather of belt scrolling beat em ups.

Capcom hands down had the fighting/beat'em up genre on lock back then, shame they didn't dedicate this in fighting/beat'em up arcade classics.

Igs had the amazing Knights of Valour series, and Denjin Makai II is probably the best pure side-scrolling beat 'em up of all time.
Back as a kid I used to play this game at the Excalibur in Las Vegas, quite the appropriate setting for KotR. Fun times indeed.
Anybody noticed the way Percival changes his look is almost the same as Rob Halford from Judas Priest? Going from blonde to bald with brown beard.
Looks like they age in the latter level ups. Percival is the most noticeable, he got battle hardened his skin can tell that.

I just re-discovered this game after many years. I didn't remember the name.
I love that even though the enemies is literally 1 cm away they can't touch you as long as they are not at the same horizontal axis.
I used to have a tough time with Braford the sword master in the arcade. Always remembered his name.
In a perfect world, Capcom would've made a beat 'em up out of Miura's Berserk!

aussie jinjo obviously you've never read the book, seen the movie or studied the Arthurian legends.
Not to mention the samurai. The armor he's wearing didn't come into use until after 1100 AD, and the katana wasn't invented until the Kamakura Period (~1100 - 1300 AD) while the Arthurian legends took place around 500 AD, over 600 years earlier.

This might be an old game but, it still a good game to play.
10 year old me loved this game to death, together with Vendetta and 64th street. 38 year old me still does. Maybe even more now. So nostálgic. Btw level 2 boss gives Ganondorf vibes
Spamming the power slash is one thing I wish I knew how to do consistently back then!
