That "The New Girl on Town" scene is a callback on how Rock and Roll is originally a Black Music movement but in order to make it more 'Marketable', they use Elvis Presley, a white guy, to market it to the white audience.
Well, truthfully the industry didn't so much use Elvis for marketing as that was just his style. He was naturally all old gospel, country, rock-a-billy, and soul. Your best reaction ever! Lmao I died watching. When you realized it was in the ‘60s. Sad to say it was a little too easy to confuse it with modern day 😭😭
Being born and raised in Baltimore, the original "Hairspray" from 1988 that John Waters did is a re-telling of a true story. Back in 1957, "The Buddy Deane Show" debuted on Baltimore television station WJZ and for a period of time, it was the most popular show in the entire country. It's "rival" was "American Bandstand," that aired in Philadelphia at the same time and was hosted by Dick Clark. Any musical act, black or white, that originally appeared on Buddy's show was barred from ever before on AB. Though WJZ was an ABC affiliate (it's now a CBS one), the station would "black out" (not air in on its station) because AB featured black & white teenagers dancing together (though it wasn't until 1964 when AB moved to California did they actually show this via the cameras). Sadly, Buddy lost his show in 1964 because WJZ at the time was unwilling to integrate black and white dancers. In the original 1988 version of "Hairspray" (the 2007 movie is based upon a reboot of the original as Waters allowed a Broadway production of his sleeper hit to be done, which gave us this movie), there is a scene with Motormouth & Little Inez handcuff themselves to the Governor of Maryland, because Tracy was arrested at an amusement park called "Tilted Acres" that was owned by the Van Tussle family (in the 1988 movie, Debbie Harry & Sonny Bono played Amber's racist parents) & was sent to reform school. The Governor was there to open up the 1963 Auto Show, which was going to announce the winner from "The Corny Collins Show." When they arrive at the Governor's mansion and got out of the car, there is a reporter, holding a microphone and asking the Governor a question, that is Buddy Deane, Waters write that into the movie just for him. Fun facts about the original Tracy & Amber - Tracy was played by then unknown teenager Rikki Lake (this was her debut acting role) and Amber was played by Colleen Fitzpatrick, but you probably know her better as recording artist Vitamin C.
Rewatching it I guess, Billy is so animated and everytime(happens a lot) I rewatch his uploads I discover something new to make me laugh...He is loudness, Loudness is him

edna’s story makes me so sad cause she really existed during a time when fat girls were even harassed by the police because it was considered “obscene” she mentions she hadn’t left the house in years and it’s been documented that some fat women really had to do that in the past cause just like any other minority their life was in danger

When I was younger, my whole class and I had so much fun making this musical for a school competition. I didn't get the message then, I just love the music and though I hated dancing, you can say how much this show meant to me when I still remember the choreography from middle school to college. But I don't remember exactly where the moves came from until you watched "Hairspray" and unlocked a core memory for me. Rewatching it again gave it a whole new meaning and the nostalgia is like the truck Tracy was on top of on the beginning running me over. XD I can't believe I forgot when our teacher even made a lifesize bright pink hairspray with colored paper and wires! We won the competition with this even! So thanks to your reaction I now have the name to the music. 🙏🙏🙏
I saw the national tour of Hairspray last weekend and during the announcement they made sure to say "this show takes place in 1962" and all I could think of was this video and just Billy in the audience yelling "I'm sorry WHAT day"
In the 60s people didn't know how dangerous cigarettes were. No surgeon General warning on the boxes. So people smoked them kinda for fun. Like chewing gum
I always loved and hated the scene with Velma seducing Wilbur. I hated it cause of Velma's intentions and love it cause of Michelle Pfeiffer and Christopher Walken having a scene together! They worked together in Batman Returns where their roles were more reversed with Walken's character being the big bad and Pfeiffer's character being the awkward victim (Though she later turns into a badass villain/anti-hero/anti-villain.) so it's cool seeing the roles reversed here.

There's a lot of people in this movie... the guy playing Corny Collins is James Marsden. You saw him when you reviewed Enchanted. He was Prince Edward. You may also remember him from the X Men movies (he played Cyclops) and The Notebook. Most recently he was in the Sonic the Hedgehog movies. He's been in a lot of stuff.

I first watched it in History when we were learning about America and the Civil Rights movement during GCSEs, even though we had to analyse it before we could watch the full thing I still fell in love when we finally saw the whole thing!
Hairspray: gives indications that it’s set in the mid/ early sixties, buy showing how people dressed with the iconic dress and hairstyles. Opens on the date on the newspaper, and shows people doing stuff that would not be okay now like smoking while pregnant. People: WHY IS THIS MOVIE SO RACIST?????

I always love when Motormouth Maybelle tells Seaweed and Penny that, as an interracial couple, they need to be prepared for “a whole lot of ugly comin’ at you from a never ending parade of stupid” and without missing a beat Penny Pingleton responds with “oh. So you’ve met my mom.” Makes me laugh every time
I loved the original hairspray more but Queen Latifah is why I loved this one so much. Hi, new to your channel and currently binge watching. Great commentary
Your best reaction ever! Lmao I died watching. When you realized it was in the ‘60s. Sad to say it was a little too easy to confuse it with modern day 😭😭
You just KNOW Billy was dancing around his house listening to these songs and singing along for a long a** time after watching this! 😂😂😂
Rewatching it I guess, Billy is so animated and everytime(happens a lot) I rewatch his uploads I discover something new to make me laugh...He is loudness, Loudness is him
I wasn't the only one who had a crush on seaweed, right?
definitely not, i had a major crush on him😭 i always thought he was cute asf and his voice is absolutely AMAZING and he got the moves, triple threat fr
This has been one of my favorite movies since I was a kid. To this day I know all the songs and choreography like the back of my hand💜
It gets me every time that he realizes that HALFWAY through the movie he just finds out it takes place in the 60s
"Why did he yell it like that?" It's Christopher Walken that's why 😂
In theatre circles, the last big number, You Can't Stop the Beat, is often referred to as You Can't Stop to Breathe. It is a BEAST to perform!
edna’s story makes me so sad cause she really existed during a time when fat girls were even harassed by the police because it was considered “obscene” she mentions she hadn’t left the house in years and it’s been documented that some fat women really had to do that in the past cause just like any other minority their life was in danger
I didn’t know that. How horrible
They could go worked out …black ppl don’t get to change their skin but u can Change how you eat and change ur body
@@blackpinkblinkfam7197but if they’re confined to the home and women weren’t even allowed to be out in spaces with men without their man that would’ve been nearly impossible hence why she was confined to the house
@@blackpinkblinkfam7197I don’t think the original comment was disputing how harshly black people were treated. That’s like jumping into an argument about misogyny and piping up about “well I’m black so my trauma is worse than yours” grow up 😂😂😂
When I was younger, my whole class and I had so much fun making this musical for a school competition. 🙏🙏🙏
Man’s said “I can fix that” 🤣
I saw the national tour of Hairspray last weekend and during the announcement they made sure to say "this show takes place in 1962" and all I could think of was this video and just Billy in the audience yelling "I'm sorry WHAT day"
Watching you watch this was hilarious, your reactions, priceless. Anyone who has not seen it should watch the whole movie. so many great moments.
this literally provided the serotonin i needed today
I love the fact that he didn’t read the synopsis and has the perfect shirt for the movie’s message! 😆
In the 60s people didn't know how dangerous cigarettes were. No surgeon General warning on the boxes. So people smoked them kinda for fun. Like chewing gum
I was a choir kid and we watched this a few times. I love this musical and it is true Billy,
The blacker the berry the sweeter the juice 😉
@13:07 “she’s living in the past” 😂 I mean…she literally is lol
This is my first time seeing your channel and your energy is just so (insert fireworks here) You are so funny, I am just loving the energy and commentary and just everything. I cannot wait to check out your other videos and I hope you continue to do reaction videos in the future. No matter what, always remember that You are Appreciated, You are Supported, and You are Loved
I liked when you said "I can fix that" Holes is one of my fav movies and the way you said it was 🥰

#Bingers if you haven’t seen Lilo and Stitch yet I highly recommend it. Top 3 of Disney movies for me for SURE. I think you’ll like it seen how much you liked Tangled
Lilo and Stitch is so good
I absolutely loved your reaction! Hysterically laughing at your face when you didn't realise that there was racism in it haha. Fantastic reaction, you've got a new subscriber!
4:03 Billy "Did i wear the right shirt on accident?!?"
Yes Billy, yes you did
"Uh uh! They kissing like 2 tater tots." 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 IM DEAD
I loved this reaction so much!! Missed out the first time so I’m glad I got to see it
every once in a while i come back to watch this reaction cause, my dude, i love watching Billy confused as hell for like the first half of the movie before realizing that its set in the 60s lmao its just amazing
guess whos back... back again
watched a second time because the first time gave me so much seratonin. also ANXIETY from you not knowing that it was 1962 for so long lmaoooo
The fact that it took a song titled "welcome to the 60s" for him to realize this wasnt set in the modern day...like...bruh look at all their outfits, hair, music, dancing....bruh...whooooshhhh
Guess who’s back…back again!
So glad this video is back,I absolutely loved it❤️amazing content Billy!
“… my melinated queens!”
I’m dead 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Well I haven't "tasted the chocolate" yet. lmao. You're going to get yourself in trouble billy. 😂
When I was like 7 I used to watch this movie a lot and whenever they said “the darker the berry, the sweeter the taste” I was like that’s so goddam right. I still love that line
Love how excited you got when Inez won as if she were your Lil sister 🤣❤️
you should watch "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" if you haven't
If Zac Efron touched me I’ll be singing too!😂
There's a lot of people in this movie... the guy playing Corny Collins is James Marsden. You saw him when you reviewed Enchanted. He was Prince Edward. You may also remember him from the X Men movies (he played Cyclops) and The Notebook. Most recently he was in the Sonic the Hedgehog movies. He's been in a lot of stuff.
He was a hot vampire in Buffy.
@@TheDivayentaI think you are thinking of James Marsters. James Marsden was not in Buffy. ;)
He was also in Hop
I love this movie, I love seeing other people watch it too cause it needs to be seen.
Billy just out here playing with everyone’s hearts 😂
I'm newer to this channel and have watched a few of the reaction videos thus far. This is one of my favorite reactions! I can't wait to see more and will definitely be rewatching this one.
I legit didn't know she sings "I screw the judges+more"
&I watched it at least 3 times
I like how you only figured out that this was set in the 60s when you got half way through the movie at Welcome To The 60s
I love/hate that one of your favorite songs is “The Ladies Choice” which wasn’t even in the original Broadway show and was written specifically for Zach Efron for the movie. It’s hilarious to me 😂
This has been my favorite review that you’ve ever done thus far! 😂😂
"Why did he yell it like that?" Because it's Christopher Walken, tbh XD
