Mozart compos’d this Sonata in the summer of 1777-specifically for a forte-piano [tho’ it could be perform’d also on a clavichord or harpsichord) - according to his fathers two tuning forks the A in southern Austria in the 1770s & 1780s hover’d between A = 420Hz to A = 432 depending on the ambient weather conditions for ‘fix’d keyboard instruments’) but not anywhere near the modern post-1950 standard of A = 440Hz - so it would be more ‘accurate’ in terms of what M. had in mind in 1777 to use a forte-piano tun’d down to around A=425Hz - you will immediately notice the difference using period or exact-replica instruments rather than a modern Grand Piano tun’d to A = 440Hz-especially in the distinctive sound of his bass notes …
