  • Is this the new top-tier MacBook to get? After spending 100+ hours with this powerhouse, here’s my honest review of the Apple M2 MacBook Pro. Some will say it’s only a spec bump with very little change, but there’s more to the MacBook Pro M2 this year. Thanks CleanMyMacX for sponsoring this video.

I have a M1 Pro 14 mid range with 32 Gb of ram. Paid 2800 and had it since November. I’m a professional in the creative industry. I feel kinda sorry for anyone who has an M1 Pro and thinks they need to get rid of it for this one, because they are just feeding into the Apple marketing ploy. And people asking for substantial upgrades within a year of a groundbreaking laptop release is just wild. What that would mean is everyone would stop buying mid to high end because why on earth would they want their device to become mediocre in only a year?! That, or they want to start leasing laptops because again, why pay a ton if the value is depreciated that fast. No thanks.

I have an M2 Max MBP, a CalDigit TS4 and two 4K LG 27UN850 displays.
CalDigit says in their literature that the M2 Max MBP can run two 4K displays @60Hz when connected to the CalDigit TS4 via Thudnerbolt4.
The best performance I seem to get is two 4K displays at 30Hz when connected to the CalDigit TS4.
However, if I connect the two 4K displays directly to the MBP I do get 4K @60Hz.
CalDigit support does not have a solution currently.
Has anyone had this issue and have you found a work around?

    Hey
I am confused between buying a
M2 air 16/512 10 core gpu which costs $1700 in my country vs a
Discounted new base 14 M1 Pro at $2070
For reference a new base M2 pro costs $2450
Apple products are around 20-25% more expensive in my country than the US.
My usage is mainly content consumption, light to moderate video and photo editing and extensive use of the Microsoft office suite.
Which one should I pick and is the screen and 120hz promotion display as much better than the Retina display on the air to justify the $300 dollar difference since I’m already stretching my budget a bit with the m2 air upgraded spec.
It would be awesome if you could give some insight.

    • @brightboxstudio
      @brightboxstudio ปีที่แล้ว +1

One way to look at it: Compared to the old Intel MacBook Pro, the M1/M2 is much safer to use as a desktop. The risks of using a laptop as a desktop in the past are a high workload will heat it up too much when closed, making the fans noisy, the battery will always be at 100% (bad), and the battery will be hot because the laptop is hot (100% charge plus high heat is even worse for the battery).
Apple Silicon laptops improve all of that. They run cool even under most loads, so the fans are rarely at maximum and are therefore quiet. The cool running means the battery doesn’t get as hot as in an Intel. Also, macOS now has Battery Optimization which you should turn on if using as a desktop. Battery Optimization learns your charging patterns and eventually limits your maximum charge when on AC (unless you want to manually top off because you’re taking it with you). Battery Optimization in combination with lower temperature helps preserve the battery. For more control over battery charge limiting on AC, there is software such as AlDente.
I agree with the video: Since I got my M1 Pro MacBook Pro, I have stopped thinking I might need a desktop too. Instead I plug the MacBook Pro into a Thunderbolt hub connected to displays and storage, and then it's a pretty good desktop.

Time to go spelunking through my History and rewatch. It seems, the safest bet for those not wanting to nit pick every spec to make sure they don't get screwed by Apple...buy an M1 Pro or Max machine. Those seem to be all winners. With the M2, you have to make sure you get one with 2 SSD chips or else you get slow speeds...and then my mention earlier about Thermal related throttling (th-cam.com/video/wakmaa5_GQk/w-d-xo.html).

    I’m a year behind so looking at 14”M2 Max 12/30 1tb 32gb or mbp m3pro 12/18 18gb.
Both same price had last mbp for over 10years so either would be a massive improvement.
I know the m3pro would be great but edging towards M2 Max for the ram.

Yeah don't get the m2 max on the 14". Stick with the base config 14" m2 pro to get the best thermals. If you want m2 max I would suggest getting the 16" because its larger chassis provides better thermals. If you want more info I would watch Just Josh's video on the new m2 macbook pros.

@@Evenaardez I would do more research but In Josh’s video the m2 pro 19 core gpu in the 14” still had really bad thermals and loud fan noise compared to the m2 pro 16 core gpu which was dead silent and had good thermals. So, anything higher than the base m2 pro 16 core gpu in the 14” is going to have bad thermals.

1 - chrome is not a electron app
2 - you can install spotify as a pwa (so also no electron)
3 - 15inch macbook does not exist 16 inch is also the max.
4 - why 14 inch sweetspot, ok valid, but you didn't talk about the much better screen, larger touchpad, more battery and better thermals vs 13 inch
    5 - what M1 chip are you talking about ? M1, M1 pro or m1 max?
6 - 16gb not enough for apps like chrome? I have 2.5gb in use and 100 tabs open.
7 - just so you know an electron app takes around 256mb.

My 16" M2 MBP (Pro, 12-Core CPU, 19-Core GPU, 16GB Unified Memory, 1TB SSD) is a few weeks old. Absolutely love the great keyboard, vivid beautiful display, touchID is such a joy, and the sound quality is just beyond. The fit and finish, the array of ports, fantastic. The one thing I was wary of was the massive touch pad, which I thought was unnecessarily large, but I was wrong. There's no false input because your palm is resting on it, and it's just great. It charges very quickly, and sips power. This 2023 model had big shoes to fill. It was a replacement for my 2012 15" MBP which had been an absolute workhorse for 10+ years. The 2023 MBP has exceeded my expectations in every respect, so far.

The M2 Pro is excellent, we enjoy superior performance on our MacBooks because Apple Silicon is designed to support real world apps while Intel is stuck with a 1980s mindset which relies on ridiculously high clock rates that runs unconsciously hot and consumes irresponsible amounts of power.
Clock rate is nonsense, it is marketing BS that Intel is still clinging onto because tear are decades behind on innovation.

“Apps like Chrome and Spotify run on a framework called Electron” at 5:42 is not true but you are close. Chrome has never been based off Electron, Electron is based on Google Chromes open-source derivative called Chromium. Chromium is just Google Chrome without Google bookmark sync and Google defaults.
    But to your point
On your dock I see two electron apps, Spotify and Figma. If you were to open Google Chrome, Spotify, and Figma at the same time you would essentially have 3 copies of Google Chrome running at once. And we all know how much of a memory hog just one instance of Chrome is.
