When it comes to Norway (northern europe). We're allowed 10 000kg on free rolling axles, 11 000kg on powered axles and max. GVW @ 50 000kg. without special permits. single axle drives are acually fairly decent to drive on bare asphalt, but a nightmare on snow and ice. up here, most of the natives run 3 axled tractors with lifting capabilities on the rear-most axle (usually not powered). distributing weight: summer: pretty much even winter: max legal weight on drive axle(s) (for traction)
In oz ,west and north we have a permit (concessional)which allows us to the gmv of the truck,without going over length 53.5 mtrs.Tri axle(23.5) boogies (16.5) steers ,first steer 6 2nd 5 ton

Well, if I could choose my truck myself from all the makes out there it'd be a Volvo, but due to business politics my company will not buy from the Volvo dealer here in Iceland (don't ask, truly I do not know why), but they have a lot of business with both the Merc and Scania dealers over here so they only want to buy trucks from them and of those two brands I'd choose the Merc every day :)

Stop any Truck you like, ask the Driver, to take you with him for one Week, and then compare it to the comercial, or make your own test at the truckstop, Just knock on the doors of different trucks, and listen to the sound they are making. It tells way more about "how perfect" the truck is. I personally prefer swedish trucks to german ones.
well, a 2005 model 500hp Merc my company has outruns a 2006 500hp Scania we have, both running at 49 tonnes so my experience begs the differ from what you describe, two very similar trucks and the Merc wins on that stage, not to mention the breakdowns, the Scania hardly has time to work for all the time it has to spend in the workshop wile the Merc just keeps on rolling and it even has 200K kms more on the clock

if the 600 horsepower engine isn't enough for hauling 40 tonnes around the motorways then I think you need to go and find another profession. I'm quite content with my 510 hp Merc in Iceland where you can't find a straight and level road exceeding maybe 500 meters and I have a 6x4 version so there is one more diff to turn and I'm hauling 49 tonnes around

60 = 600HP 18 = 18t - maximal weight of tractor unit.
600HP + megaspace cab is super :-))) .....but normal drivers receive 410HP + normal cab

the american trucks are lighter, but they have less power, haul less then we do but are much much longer so they wouldn't fit in our streets
