MTPO is one of those games that is VERY nostalgic for me. One hint of the music or the visuals, and I'm back in that period of my life where I'm in private school for the first time, the NES was hooked up to the small downstairs TV in my home (before, everything was in the family living room, and a couple of years later, I'd have localized everything to my own bedroom), and I was getting into pro wrestling. It's a very specific place and time, and only a few games or shows take me back to not only the visuals of that place, but the feeling of it: this, Goonies II, watching Robotech, and WWF Superstars of Wrestling. Hours spent just staring at the TV and figuring this game out. A large part of me misses those days. It's WEIRD to me how few honest-to-God sequels some of the best games have had. Super Punch-Out!! was great, but somehow lacked the feeling this game gave; the Wii game was...meh. I still want a Kid Icarus sequel that FEELS like Kid Icarus, too. Such simple formulas in enormously popular games, and then nothing else.
Imagine having to fight someone who has beaten all of his opponents in 20 punches or less, and for some of those fights he even messed around and did nothing until the last round before he threw his own punches. Oh, and he beats people literally double to triple his own size too.

Assuming that each time that game checks whether Bald Bull should charge is independent, then you could use a negative binomial distribution to calculate the probability of getting fast enough bull changes. A negative binomial distribution can be used to determine the probability of having a certain number of failures (in this case, checks where he doesn't charge) to get a set number of successes (in this case, the 2 charges that you need). So using the time limit, calculate the max number of failures that you can deal with, then use the negative binomial distribution to find the probability of getting that number of less. However, this also relies on knowing the probability that he charges on a single check, which you said is also unknown, so it's a moot point unless that can be determined. The chance of getting rolling jabs vs a hook later on also complicates the calculation a bit, but assuming that's independent of the bull charge times, then it can be accounted for without too much trouble.

Imagine being a kid in Punch-Out's release year. You're a massive fan of Kid Dynamite himself, Iron Mike Tyson. You've seen the adverts for the new, cool-looking boxing game featuring Iron Mike, and you've begged your parents to buy you a NES Control Deck and the game. On Christmas Day, you excitedly wake up your parents and dash downstairs. Ripping open your biggest present first, your prayers were answered as it's a full-fledged NES! And the present on top is nothing else but Mike Tyson's Punch-Out! You excitedly plug in the power and video cables into the wall, TV and Control Deck, plug the controller in, and boot up the game. Then, you see the fateful words: "Mike Tyson is waiting for your challenge!"
Here’s this man explaining how to beat this game in the fewest punches possible, meanwhile I’m learning there’s apparently a fast and slow dodge??????? Genuinely didn’t know that
You're overthinking macho, you have loads of time where he's idle. You only need one random star because of the knockdown issue not changing the punch count. You dont need to get fancy with long/short delays good/bad pattern if you dont get time sensitive optimal luck there's still tons of windows where he just wont do anything winding up for the mini spin. It's of course possible you dont get the at most 4 minispins necessary to win in r1 but similar to hippo the odds are very low. So, effectively 3/8
yup, you're probably right Jack. I didnt TAS every possible variation. But it is extremely likely that you would get good enough in patterns and delays to land all the hits.
At 13:30 , 1/60th of a second is 16.67ms, not 0.0167ms. I think the mistake you made was dividing a second by 60 and then assigning that as the millisecond value, which isn't correct :P
29:30 Wow! I see you are a man of culture with the choice of background music. Always nice to hear some Temporal Tower. Thanks for introducing me to that remix.

Revisiting this video again and looking at the victory conditions for all the fights, I noticed that Tyson has one of the lower point thresholds to win by decision. It makes me wonder what percentage of ordinary players who eventually beat the game defeated him by decision- particularly given how challenging it is to score KOs on him (much less win) in round 1. Back in the day, I don't think I ever got past Popinski.
from what I hear, a decent portion of people get their first win by decision rather than TKO or KO on Tyson. Id guess around 25-35% of peoples first win on him is by decision.
Well, I haven't played this game since the 90's (poorly!) and I've never done speed running, but hearing how easy tying the record for the first match is really makes me want to try and get my name on a record.
okay before i watch im gonna guess youd need around 305 punches for all the boys. Edit: great vid man, didnt know there are so many 1hit knockdowns. now i wonder how it looks for the sequels
technical knock out. The three knockdowns in one round is pretty rare in real boxing. 90%+ of TKO are when the ref stops the fight as one fighter cannot defend themselves any more. Most of the remainder of TKOs is the corner 'throwing in the towel'. I cant remember the last time I saw a TKO by three knockdowns in a real fight......
Something I've always wondered is how do you get Super Macho Man to not dodge your star punches after he takes two of them? When I tried searching it up I could never find the answer on it, is it just the guard manipulation that prevents him from doing so?
Fantastic Question. Firstly, Macho isnt stunned long enough to land a star punch except when you have rapid punches. There is actually a way to reset the opponents ability to dodge which i detailed here in my highscore tutorial - th-cam.com/video/tTXDgdyGGWM/w-d-xo.html
I thought about 150. The more interesting question is the programming of these fights. I have to wonder how many of these strange choices were intended, unintended, or changed based on playtesting.
It's me again. I've just managed to get MTPO TAS set up yesterday, and I've got to say it's really fun to mess around with. Though I'm nowhere remotely close to being an expert at this sort of thing, I did manage to put together the improved Bald Bull 1 minimum punch fight I theorized 6 months ago. It does not depend on a random star or 1/4 refill, and also has a comfortable timeframe to work with, so it doesn't need ridiculous luck with Bull at the back of the ring either. This strat should work nearly every time. I'll also try to squeeze that one extra guaranteed star out of Sandman soon, though it should only take a slight reordering and does not seem too exciting. Again, great work and dedication on your videos. It semms like you rarely orerlook any details while deleloping strategies.
Very nice! If you do make a video of getting 1 less punch on Bull or Sandman (or any other fight), just post a video of it replying to this comment. Im actually quite a poor TASer, anyone truly dedicated to the TAS craft could spend a year or more developing a TAS, ironing out every single detail.
@@Papamanual Never blindly assume that the lowest refills are always necessary. It is generall worth cheching if your goal can be reached with sub optimal luck. The minimum number of punches required to TKO Don 2 is 14. This works just fine with the guaranteed 56 HP refill, so the assumption that the 1/8 40 HP refill would be necessary is unfounded in this regard as well.
@@jamesblalack5131 From memory, the decision to just "get the lowest refills" was illustrating my TAS thought process, regardless of if the smallest refill was actually necessary. As a general rule, having less HP to deal with would mean less punches, but I definitely also considered strats where getting more HP was beneficial to get a star in a different spot or something (I havent watched my own vid in a long time so i cant remember if there were any such cases). If there were any, I potentially thought of it as a "twist in the narrative" for the fight.
This was a really good idea. i noted during alot of the fights mac's hp mattered. Is there a counter for mac getting knocked down that affects the game in a positive way?
is the "press select for half HP" thing normally intended to just be "i want to make the game harder" or is there any other benefit beyond the specific game manipulation detailed here?
I think it could be 6. 3 to get stars (if you can get that many), and 3 to use the uppercuts (if they those count as punches). That might be enough to win be decision. Edit: I thought you meant only mike Tyson. I didn’t read the title correctly, I guess. I was still probably way off
I am unlikely to cover a wii game as i never owned a wii, and dont have any connection with any of those games. SNES games are likely, should I continue to make content
Was gonna click off, but as I kept watching I just got so interested in the way everything was presented that I changed my mind completely. Great video!
Now that I rewatch this video I think it's crazy that out of 120 punches on 14 fights, 84 are landed in 5 of them which means that to win the other 9 fights 36 punches were needed, just 4 punches per fight in average. The top 7 fights would need 100, leaving just 20 punches for the other 7 fights, or slighly less than 3 for each in average. If you wanna go crazy, the bottom 5 just need 9 punches to be beaten, not even 10, less than two punches per fight in average.
As I watched this, I recall KO-ing Tyson in the second round. That was 30+ years ago, but still am 85%+ certain as I was surprised by the outcome. Never KO’ed him again. Still remember beating him by decision as well.

Most of the remainder of TKOs is the corner 'throwing in the towel'. I cant remember the last time I saw a TKO by three knockdowns in a real fight......
The more I watch videos like this the more I want to know exactly what lunatic programmed this game.
I read the title to this video: “How many punches” to beat the game? Ok simple enough.
45 MINUTES LONG?!
TASs take a while to make. And to explain
Shout out to the beard guy and the camera flash guy
I just watched a 45 min video about a game I never played that was released before I was born.
You’re going places if you keep this up. Also I would recommend using Audacity to improve your mic audio.
I thought about 150.
The more interesting question is the programming of these fights. I have to wonder how many of these strange choices were intended, unintended, or changed based on playtesting.
Fun fact: if you try to win by decision on Don Flamenco's fight, even if no punches landed on you, you can still lose
this is because decision wins in mike tyson's punch out is based on your total score when round 3 is over

@@davidthecommenter Nah, he just bribed the referee.
Nah bro he's just way too sexy
Man this whole video is framed really well. Never been hyped for punch-out before, I watched through the whole video!
Why are the odds of getting the TAS time on Bald Bull 2 1 in 177 trillion?
There is a lot of punches that are only 1/16 to go through, like more than 10
It's me again.
If there were any, I potentially thought of it as a "twist in the narrative" for the fight.
actually, tyson can be beaten in 3 punches, since getting the 3rd knockdown with mac at full hp is an instant ko, and you can get 3 1 hit kds
My guess was 117 punches. I'll admit I started to grin a little bit when I heard the Halo music starting to play towards the end of the video.
This was a really good idea. i noted during alot of the fights mac's hp mattered. Is there a counter for mac getting knocked down that affects the game in a positive way?
as far as I know, the amount of times Mac Has been knocked down doesnt affect anything. I have to confess that I have never looked into that though.

Question: How Many Punches to Beat Punch Out?
Answer: More than 6 probably
31:22 when you're so good at the game you have to drain your own health because your enemies can't
A Punch-Out challenge video that partially utilises Bleach music, TH-cam knows me too well. Really neat video!
is the "press select for half HP" thing normally intended to just be "i want to make the game harder" or is there any other benefit beyond the specific game manipulation detailed here?
I have no idea if its a glitch or intended - it doesnt work on like half the fights, specifically all the early ones.
So, this begs the question: what's the MOST amount of punches you can do in Mike Tyson's Punch Out?
That's just a question of time though, as if there was no time limit it would be infinite
I guessed 120 because it was between my lowball and hiball guess, but didn’t expect it to be exactly 120!
I think it could be 6. 3 to get stars (if you can get that many), and 3 to use the uppercuts (if they those count as punches). That might be enough to win be decision.
Edit: I thought you meant only mike Tyson. I didn’t read the title correctly, I guess. I was still probably way off
i was wondering if anyone else read it wrong like that haha
man can you imagine a tv show like this, something so silly. god bless youtube for existing.
Zero, I don’t know why you would punch your console but you do you
You should do this for Wii and Super
Aw your Baldbull "Before Moon" SF EX theme use was genius
Will you cover the snes and wii games?
I am unlikely to cover a wii game as i never owned a wii, and dont have any connection with any of those games. SNES games are likely, should I continue to make content

I know basically nothing about Super Punch-Out!! or PO Wii. I think there is already a video for Punch out wii though, that someone else made

45min to answer a question from a game i never played. Must watch.
you know it's going to be good when it answers a question that should be answerable in a few seconds, in 45 minutes
Outstanding video! Thanks for such awesome effort and explanations!
I remember playing this game many years ago. I was the only one who could beat Mike Tyson between me and my brother and friends.
It's amazing this shows you right here that the Nintendo is truly a computer

Guessing 221 punches.
And I’m guessing the algorithm is already listening, since I got recommended this video.
I hear PMD music!

Capt. Striker: "I don't know. See, there's this drinking problem I have..."
