    There seems to be a bit of confusion about when I am setting the post-fader tap point later in the video, this is post-fader so that you have overall volume control of the floor monitor with the mixbus master fader. Setting this tap-point does not make your mixbus a post-fader setup, this was set when we set up our mixbusses earlier in the video. So don't skip over the part where I talk about the setup for the Mixbusses around the 01:40 mark. You definitely want your mixbus to be set up in a pre-fader configuration so that you have consistent volume for the band throughout the show.

    HaHa, "its as simple as that" Youve just been on 20 odd different menu's, just to be able to get 3 vocals in a monitor,

    • @chuckcostello5167
      @chuckcostello5167 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      He didn’t have to be in all of those menus to get the vocals in the monitors. He was showing all the different ways that can be used to get them there. And once you understand the routing that’s happening within the unit (which is what he was explaining) then it really is “simple as that”.

    Drew, please help me (or anyone else). I have worked so hard in learning this board for installation at my church. However, there is a problem that I can't resolve. When I tap BUS1 (which is my monitor 1) and then I tap "sends on faders" and increase a particular channel (vocal mic) into it, I then get out of that by tapping sends on faders. However, then when I turn that vocal fader all the way down, I am still getting sound from that channel into the mains. I should not be getting any sound from that vocal channel into the mains when I slide that vocal channel fader all the way down. Please anyone,,,help!

    • @davidwellington4186
      @davidwellington4186 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Check all the Sends from that channel to make sure none are set that shouldn't be, and might be sending to the LR. Also look at the 'Main' tab on the Monitor Buss channel to make sure it is not also sending to the LR or Mono/Sub - remember the mic channel Send to the Monitor Buss will be Pre fader ( of the mic channel), so will appear in the Mon Buss with the mic fader closed. Hope this helps. D

    Man, I am a sound tech idiot par excellence. Followed all the steps in this video which makes it seem so easy and I was able to do everything EXCEPT get anything coming out of my monitors. Still can't get even the most basic mix out to a monitor. Got this X32 compact board because it sure CAN do everything I would ever want/need it to do. Learning HOW to get it to do even the most simple functions of live mixing is proving to be a totally different thing. :-(
    I'm at the point of I will PAY someone to get on Zoom with me to help me learn how to use this thing! Better that than having a $2k piece of equipment I have no idea how to use collecting dust in my house.

    Great job, as usual. I joined your blog (appreciate the routing worksheet BTW) and downloaded your scenes. Wow! What time it saved me! Worth every penny!
    I own the X32, but am a performer, so I hire someone to run it; all well and good until I had to break it out for rehearsals and we are going to use Ableton to play tracks to replace missing performers. Your scenes download set everything up perfectly for me, whereas trying to understand how the hired guys' scenes were set up was too hard for me.
    Kudos!

    Hi Drew. Love ur vids. 100% useful. I would like to find out why I have next issue. When linking two SD8s to my X32 compact, I set SD8A as outputs 1-8 with the switch and SD8B as 9-16 outputs. Outputs on X32 are routed 1-8 as Buses for wedges. And 15-16 Outputs for L&R. But when sending signal to Bus 7 or 8 to my wedges, signal also goes trough the main XLR, as if they were still routed to 7 and 8 as L&R. I´ve updated firmware and triple-checked routings, but still the same. Any idea, and if so, could you make a video about it? Thanks

    Re viewing the fader Layers on the Compact (and I assume the Producer): You can press any two Layer buttons on the Left hand side together, and those two layers will appear on the the two fader banks. So you can have all 16 Mix Busses at the same time for example.

    I’m very new to using a mixer, so please bear with me. I am hooking up sound for a musical. I would need all channels to go to the monitors so actors can hear. How do I plug in the monitors? On the back I see a jack (output?) behind the monitor dial of both XLR and 1/4” cables. Someone hooked up the XLR to the system for FOH. Do the monitors connect with the 1/4”? Or do they connect to different port? I hope this makes sense 😅

  • @willietharp9092

    Monitors should be set pre eq. That will be pre FOH eq. Set dual 31 band eq's to your monitors, ring them out. You don't want the Front of house eq to mess with the artists during performances. Monitors should stay the same throughout their performance. You'll throw them off if their tones change. And post fader in the x32 is not what people are thinking in this comment thread. Shows your commenting without ever working on one. Post fader on the x32 means post monitor fader not foh

    • @DrewBrashler
      @DrewBrashler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you are misinterpreting what I'm doing here. The post fader comment is the actual output tap of the console from the mixbus. I agree that from a FOH console the mixbus should be set to pre-fader (or pre-eq in your case). But the output tap feeding the output needs to be post fader so that the master level of the mixbus will adjust the volume of the speaker.

    I have inherited the sound system in our church. I am not an experienced sound man.
    My problem is with my monitors. If I am using the microphones for the singers, I can increase or decrease the sound in the monitors. I can turn the main volume slider to zero and still adjust the monitors.
    With the tracks, I cannot adjust the volume in the monitors without have the main slider up. I cannot turn the main slider volume down and have any adjustment for the monitors, tracks only.

    Hey @DrewBrashler, I know the chances of you answering are slim but I’m gonna ask anyways! Is it possible to duplicate the channels I’m currently using (1-16) to the second layer/page (17-32)? essentially to create a monitor land mix and have separate control over the floor monitors. Currently while adjusting my house volume, it is affecting the floor monitors and I don’t want that. I love your videos and any advice is appreciated!

    • @davidwellington4186
      @davidwellington4186 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You could mix your monitors that way - an input can be sent to many channels (but beware the input gain on all the channels will affect the input level) Select Channel/ Home/ Config tab/ select Source from list on the Left. However I would highly recommend you feed monitors in the way Drew explains, it does give you independent control of each monitor mix (including Fx levels) from the Main mix. And one day you might need to use more input channels!

    Quick question:
    If you select 16 pre-fader, where do you connect your main speakers & subs?

    • @DrewBrashler
      @DrewBrashler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well these 16 would be the mixbusses, you will have your LR Buss and the Mono Buss available to you. So you could use the Mono bus for your subwoofers, and then you would use your Stereo (LR buss) for the main PA. Additionally, if you needed to use up all 16 outputs for monitors, you could use either the AES/EBU for driving your speaker system or use your 1/4 TRS Aux outputs.
      Hope this helps!

      Go to ROUTING, then tab over to XLR. The left side of the screen is where you set the outputs. If you are using the AES50 stage box, set the outs to AES50. You can actually leave some as local outputs and some as AES50. They are in banks of 4 on my x32 compact. I think the full x32 is same. Cheers

    • @DrewBrashler
      @DrewBrashler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The post-fader is actually the output tap of the mixbus, not the internal setup of the mixbus. th-cam.com/video/jwSgSa0HMEE/w-d-xo.html In this part of the video I show how to set up the mixbusses to be pre-fader. However when you are setting up the output of the console to feed your floor wedge, you want to be able to control the overall volume of the speaker, therefore you would need the output tap on the XLR outs to be post fader. Hopefully this clears things up.

    • @JohnAndersenYVIG
      @JohnAndersenYVIG 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends. If you're using the X-Live to multitrack, it saves to a multi-channel wav file (broken up into multiple files when it reaches a certain point (just under 4 GB I think? -- can't remember for sure). Most DAWs can import the XLive files directly (usually with some option to map each channel of the wav into separate tracks but, in the odd case your DAW can't handle multi-channel wav (are there any??) Patrick-Gilles Maillot makes a utility called "X32Xlive_Wav" that allows you to split the XLive files into individual wave files. It's Windows only but if you're on Mac or Linux, all of his utilities I've tried so far run just fine in WINE. www.sites.google.com/site/patrickmaillot/x32?authuser=0#h.p_xqsqjMb-o-3m. If you are recording to a DAW via USB (or Dante, Soundgrid, etc.) than the format is whatever you settings you have chosen in the DAW. Cheers.

    • @JohnAndersenYVIG
      @JohnAndersenYVIG 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Size can be calculated. It's a fixed size based on the number of channels x the length of time you are recording. As an example, recording all 32 channels possible at 48k for a full hour would use approximately 16GB of storage (I think -- someone is welcome to check my math). :)

    You seem to have a bit of an arogant air about you in your approach to what was supposed to be a video about setting up and mixing a wedge monitor. Instead, it's 12 minutes and 35 seconds of rapid fire talk about everything other than setting up a usable monitor wedge. It's a "look at me" posting.
    Furthermore, you talk about vocalists as though they are a nuisance to you.
    The sound technician is a vital part of any musical production and should be trusted completely by the band. But the band is the reason you are there to begin with. You are there to serve the band. Not the other way around. The audience will have it's attention on the performers, not on you. Know your place and respect boundaries.
    Here are a few REAL bits of information regarding setting up a wedge for vocals.
    1. If you set up ANY wedge monitor in post-fader mode, you WILL subject your audience to painful squeeling feedback when you raise levels on front of house. Wedge monitors should ALWAYS ONLY be setup pre-fader.
    2. You didn't even mention ringing out the wedge. If you don't correctly ring out EVERY single wedge deployed on a stage to counteract the effect of room resonance at certain frequencies, EVERY one of them will be completely useless to the performers. Once the performance begins, stage volume is often louder than at sound check, and performers often need more volume in the wedge. You WILL have feedback on a wedge you didn't ring out when you try to increase it's volume. And you will likely end up ruining the performance for the band and for the audience as well.
    3. A bit of reverb in a vocal monitor is NOT an unacceptable request that requires having a word with the singer. Since ALL indoor environments produce reverb to some degree when we talk, a dry monitor can sound foreign to most any non-professional vocalist. If you are half the sound technician you seem to believe you are, reverb in the wedge should pose no problem for you.
    4. For passive wedges powered by outboard amps, as you describe, an analog mixer and 2 or 3 stereo 31 band EQs would be a far more suitable and much quicker and easier to operate option than the $2500 Behringer X32. And somewhat less costly too.
