When I put up my warhammer "coming out" video, and I discussed being put off from that corner of tabletop hobbying because of gatekeepers, specifically ones that criticize how minis are painted, I legit had several gaslighting comments telling me that it's not true and that it doesn't happen. The irony. The straight up said my experience was wrong and doesn't happen in real life.

I stumbled upon Warhammer when I was a kid 8 years old when I was over at one of my friends. My first box of miniature was a small box of space marines. After that I was hooked, I remember I use to get small amount of money (veckopeng) each week. But I convinced my parents I need weekly paint from games workshop instead, so each week I got to go to the local hobby store and buy 1 colure. Had 1 army of Tyranids and 1 army of dark elves.
Lost the hobby around the age of 14 due to world of warcraft and gaming in general. But around 3 years ago I got hooked on dungeons and dragons and started to paint again. And o boy I missed this drug in my life, think about maybe getting back into Warhammer also. Heard that they are gonna relaunch Warhammer fantasy again!

When I was 12, my parents gave me my first box of warhammer (wood elves). I found it hard to concentrate in school and painting warhammers helped me become thorough and diligent. Then at 15, I discovered LARP and I didn't touch my warhammer for 11 years.
Then, just before the Covid-19, my wife's little brother, who is 12, asked me if I knew the Warhammer figurines because he wanted to start collecting them. So I fell in love with these figurines again and thanks to you Emil and also to Miniac, Black magic craft, goobertown and miscast, I'm having fun trying lots of techniques and trying to approach painting and field making in several ways. .

I’m 28 and very lucky to have a much younger brother (12 in November) introduced him to the Warhammer hobby about 6 months ago. So great to have it to share with him, really tried right from the start to reinforce there’s no wrong way to do this hobby and to embrace his creativity. Love seeing the ideas spring up in him. Making a 40k chess board is something I've had on my mind for a while. Or maybe Horus Heresy, to make the pieces look the same on both sides and prevent confusion. I was having trouble painting eyes, and kinda slowed down on painting. Then I just started painting the eyes on a dozen kobolds, and just let it flow. I'd mess up, but I'd just go on to the next one, and by the time I was done with the 12th, I could go back and touch up each in order, and touch them up again, and it was just about the painting then, not every little eye being perfect. Took me a few rounds of that, but focusing on the fun, not the result, REALLY WORKED! :) Thanks Emil!

I've been painting citadel miniatures for decades (started with Imperial Beastmen). I have always thought there were three aspects to the hobby; lore, painting, and playing the game. As one aspect waxes another wanes. When I was deployed and unable to paint I focused on lore, when I retired and furnished my house I built a hobby room for painting, etc.
The hobby is at it's core an outlet for our creativity. We take in the work of others (such as Squidmar, Blackmagic Craft, Death of a Rubricist, and Mark Spark) and we apply our own imagination to create a final product. Sometimes those products live up to our imaginations and sometimes they do not. That is part of the hobby...
The only wrong I have found in the hobby in all my years is expecting others to live up to our imagination. You are 100% correct when you say that there is no wrong way to enjoy the hobby. This is something we all share and your idea of what is right may not be my idea of what is right, but neither of us are wrong.

You are SO right, Emil! There's no "wrong" way to enjoy a hobby!
As for myself, I'm a bit older (turned 50 a couple of months ago... God, sometimes I feel ancient LOL), but I still have a kick from my (semi-) regular D&D games, so I recently got a 3D printer and started creating minis for my games. I paint them - not exceptionally well, mind you, but well enough to be satisfied with the result for having a visual prop when my group is dungeon crawling.

  • @StarlightNightflame

You nailed it on the collecting - I often buy minis thinking "Ooo, I can use this as that thing in that game" but in the end it's more about the collecting (and eventually assembly and painting) than it ever ends up being about the playing for me. I enjoy playing, but the biggest part of the hobby for me is still the collecting etc. In fact I've been feeling more and more like just setting up dioramas instead of saving minis for potentially playing with, I'll have to try that out.
If you're enjoying what you're doing, you're doing it just fine.

I got fascinated by the Horus Heresy books and started to paint some miniatures. Sadly I had noone to play with and the painting process was so frustrating that I stopped for almost eight years.
When I discovered your channel here on youtube a few weeks ago, it was like a resurrection of that old hobby. Now I enjoy painting while listening to painting tutorials or battle reports. Even if I can't really play with them, the progress I made in painting by watching your videos was so motivating.

I love seeing a project that someone has really got passionate about as it's nice to see them get the most out of the hobby. For me the assembly is my favourite. Getting perfect seams, magnetising, converting and removing mould lines is really cathartic. Painting is then my best fave and playing is the least because I don't have the mathhammer tactical brain that my mates have. I do love having themed or unique warbands/teams/armies though.

I play with select friends, and between two of us we have enough armies to field the top 5 at tournaments. We end up loaning armies to other people to play in house. You guys have motivated the group I'm in to print our own models, and even push out to other forms like gunpla. The wide variety of mediums is nice to have so we never do get bored. Keep up the good work when you're able. Glad to see you're back from a well deserved holiday

I got back into the hobby at the start of 40k 8th edition. I started with promising myself that I wouldn’t play with unpainted miniatures (as a way of keeping me motivated to paint). Luckily one of the locals, a guy I’ve never met other than posts in a Facebook group, posted an awesome tutorial on how to speed paint with dry brush and washes. I’ve never been so hooked on painting. It didn’t take long for my significant other to get hooked as well. I started her with some 3rd edition Dark Eldar, and she’s been leading the way ever since. We got into Kill Team together ( leaning on my extensive collection of almost 40k armies worth of random stuff), then Blackstone Fortress. We now run two groups of explorers on epic campaigns into the Blackstone, and paint huge numbers of miniatures for custom expansions, but also with an eye towards getting back into 40k. She’s now picked up Orks and Necrons on her own, two armies I’ve never played. While I still have mostly Craftworld with some Marines and Tau. This is honestly the most fun I’ve ever had, and I’ve played 2 games of 40k in the last year. But we do play Blackstone Fortress 6-7 times a month with two different groups.

Its taken me an eternity but i finally realized i got the most enjoyment from converting and kitbashing. It is such a liberating thing to figure out and accept that the rest doesn't need to happen if i don't want to.

Great idea. Do the part of the hobby that gives you enjoyment. I am a terrible painter, played WHF alittle as a kid, and DND still today. After a hiatus i came back to the hobby, started in the dnd mini universe, almost stopped again until i found a few multi part GW models (and a few other brands) that suited the campaign i was playing with my brothers. Come to find out the building/converting/kitbashing/sculpting/repurposing part of the hobby is possibly my favorite part. Love telling a story that way. While building is my favorite part, once id finished the build it gave me the excitement to try learning different techniques, using different paints/othe items, or just different color combinations to enhance what i made, thus helping me improve my painting, even if only a little. Now im at the point ive built ad painted a handful of GW minis and dont even have an army. Heck not even a complete squad. I get most of my "game play itch" scratched thru other games and thru dnd. But then i have been plannin out/picking a starting army to give the playing a go again sometime soon. Anyways, good advice my friend.
