    Exploring moral dilemmas can help individuals develop ethical reasoning, values, and decision-making skills, as well as foster ethical discussions, empathy, and the development of ethical frameworks and guidelines.

    I have a question Ma'am/Sir, in the Epistemic moral dilemma after knowing the whole situation towards both situations and then you perceive that both of the available choices you should make do not override with each other or hold equal weight. Does this turn into an ontological type of moral dilemma?

    Another great video. Which category would the 'trolley problem' fall into?

    • @PHILOnotes
      @PHILOnotes  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      many thanks for your generous comments, InnocentBystandard69. the trolley problem is indeed one of the most complicated moral dilemmas in the history of moral philosophy. there are so many factors to consider in the trolley problem, most especially the context. but in my analysis, the trolley problem falls under epistemic moral dilemmas, which involve situations wherein two or more moral requirements conflict with each other and that the moral agent hardly knows which of the conflicting moral requirements takes precedence over the others.

      @InnocentBystandard69 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PHILOnotes Yes, that does make sense, but there is also a deontological vs. utilitarian dichotomy too. Would that constitute a metaethical dilemma?

      thanks again, InnocentBystandard69. well, the deontological vs. utilitarian dichotomy, I guess, can be used more as theoretical tools in addressing a particular moral dilemma.

    Are moral dilemmas a threat to objective morality? For example, if lying to save someone from a murder is the right thing to do, does that mean that lying is not always wrong? Meaning that lying is morally right sometimes but not all the time. Which means that lying is not objectively wrong?

    • @PHILOnotes
      @PHILOnotes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Many thanks, Zsarek, for your brilliant thoughts. However, in this video, we are just presenting the nature and dynamics of moral dilemmas. We are not supposed to determine the morality of human actions here. When it comes to the discussion on the morality of human actions, particularly lying, whether it saves someone from murder or not, we refer to the different moral theories, like Natural Law Ethics or Kantian Ethics. So, in determining the morality of a human act, you use a particular moral theory. For example, if we use Kantian Ethics, then lying is absolutely wrong even if it aims to save someone from murder. This is because for Kant, we are supposed to always tell the truth no matter what. But if you use Joseph Fletcher's Situation Ethics, then lying to save someone from murder is morally right. This is because for Fletcher, the morality of a human act depends on a particular situation.
      So, moral dilemmas cannot be a threat to objective morality. Again, in this video, we just present the meaning, nature and dynamics of moral dilemmas. We do not discuss here the morality of a human act.
      I hope this helps, Zsarek.

    • @ZBooneBeats
      @ZBooneBeats 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PHILOnotes Sorry I'm still confused, if moral actions are either right or wrong in objective morality. I just do not understand how moral dilemmas are not a threat because people will say that an action that is immoral is now moral. Meaning that what used to be wrong is now right. However, objective morality says that there are things that are absolute wrong or right.

    • @PHILOnotes
      @PHILOnotes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No worries, Zsarek. But again, the video lecture simply defines what a moral dilemma is, and then we explained it further by giving more examples. We are not determining the morality of human actions here. So, what is a moral dilemma? A moral dilemma is just a "moral problem". And that is the business of ethics to address these moral dilemmas.
      It's like saying to the doctor, "Doctor, I have a headache. What shall I do?". So, the patient is showing a problem for the doctor to solve. That problem (headache) cannot be a threat to the medical profession. In the same way, how can a "moral dilemma" be a threat to objective morality? In fact, it is the business of objective morality (to use your own words) to solve these problems (that is, moral dilemmas).
      Lastly, this statement "...how moral dilemmas are not a threat because people will say that an action that is immoral is now moral" IS NOT A MORAL DILEMMA. The problem here is on the person's interpretation or misinterpretation of a particular moral dilemma.
      I hope this helps.

    Is there such a thing as an ontological moral dilemma? They all seem epistemic to me. With the scenario given of two soldiers in need of a blood transfusion and only one bag of blood, I would still consider that epistemic. One answer must be superior to another. I just don't know which. Might flip a coin for it. But I assume that if I had omnipotent foresight into all future consequences of all possible actions, there would be a superior option. Maybe I'm failing to understand the difference.

    • @AnonyMous-og3ct
      @AnonyMous-og3ct 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For example, suppose I had some way of reliably knowing with a great deal of certainty, not merely a hunch, that simply giving soldier B the transfusion will diminish the morale of our troops so much that we lose the war. That would certainly be an inferior option at that point provided such knowledge, wouldn't it? It might be impossible to obtain this type of knowledge but I would think that a superior option would arise if we could possess such a superpower... if only I knew more.

    At 2.12 you posit the abortion dilemma, for Lindsay. She considers killing humans wrong. You give her the characteristic of being "deeply religious". This being religious is of course no guarantee of morality or moral beliefs. Secondly someone may consider killing humans wrong, but, as with many moral dilemmas, if you change the parameters, a way out will appear. She could be convinced that a foetus is not fully human. Just as a partially assembled chassis is not a car. Indeed it will never be a human since she will die and it cannot possibly gestate where it is. She can go on to have further children using the other ovary, or IVF, and by dying, she will deny them their possible future.

    Moral Dilemmas: To think you are moral while you kill to protect your excessive wealth. To think you are moral while eating the dead flesh of scavenger animals that lived off of putrefied flesh, the root cause of cancer. To think you are moral when you own savings at a time when the one billion least intelligent humans are slowly starving to death.

    Can you give me another example of 8 dilemmas please badly need it

    • @PHILOnotes

      it's hard to come up with examples of moral dilemmas Diane as it takes time. the internet, however, has a lot of it. for example, you may visit this site: listverse.com/2007/10/21/top-10-moral-dilemmas/

    If we have a right to own wealth, meaning to own more property than needed to have a comfortable life, than we have a right to do harm and humanity is domed to suffer extinction by global warming. On the other hand, if our wealth belongs to those suffering hunger, than humanity has some chance to survive.

      @Gabriela Riera Hi there! Good catch! :) You are actually right about the use of people as the plural form of person. In this context however, it is more appropriate to use "persons" rather than the generic pluralistic term "people". :) You may refer to this link for further reading on the distinction between people and persons. :)
