Sure you can edit levels in A Link to the Past, but you can't really add in new items with different behaviours. With the source code available, you could have new gameplay mechanics not possible with ROM hacks.

But, you know. Last I checked my collection of books didn't require some proprietary device that's incompatible with any other to be able to read any given set of books...
Game preservation has this very peculiar and awkward problem of having to deal with the fact that arguably the hardware and game are inter-related, an cannot easily be seperated from one another like they can in any other medium.
My VHS copy of Back to the Future can be salvaged simply by copying the video stream to a different medium, and the copy will be as good as the tape I got it from and the method I used to copy it.
The copy of Sim City 2000 rotting away on floppy disks won't work just because I transfer it to a new storage medium, a whole heap of other technical stuff would have to be altered as well to get it to keep working...
Game preservation is in a uniquely vulnerable position, and it's all well and good to create laws that say it's legally protected for going on 2 centuries...
But many of these games are on hardware and storage media that likely won't survive 50 years without major conservation efforts...
So either we break the law to preserve this stuff, or it vanishes into the ether.
Granted, a company like Nintendo that's still going strong and evidently does a decent job of internal preservation is less of a concern here, but the principle still stands that if we do not do something then this is a disaster waiting to happen, and we will lose a ton of gaming history forever...

Back in 2016 I found an undocumented trick in Super Mario Kart even without the source code. At least, I couldn't find any mention of it online.
If you only have a controller plugged into one controller port, the SNES can tell and games will often adapt. For example, Super Mario World and Super Mario All*Stars will let you play a 2P game by passing the controller back and forth. It will even prevent you from playing the 2P simultaneous Battle Game in Super Mario Bros 3. Anyway, I was playing around with this and wanted to see if Super Mario Kart would let me play a single player game with the 2P controller. When both controllers are plugged in it will let the 2P controller operate the menu selections too only it will not let that player pick a 1P mode.
...unless you hold L+R and press Start. That will let you play a 1P game using the 2P controller, only you will be playing on the bottom half of the screen with the map on top (reverse of the usual way). I posted an image gallery about it on Imgur.

@@TheRealSinjinsmyth I know that there is a way to do this during replays but L & R are used during game play so if you unlocked it there then that it really cool!
Before I owned any SNES games I renter Ren & Stimpy Veediots and would let the game demos loop on the title screen. After I pressed a bunch of stuff randomly I set I controller down and thought the demo had started showing the stage where Stimpy floats down an esophagus or something. It was a stage I had not managed to play up to yet and I was only aware of it through the demo. I soon realized that Stimpy was getting hurt and was not moving like he normally would during the demo. I grabbed the controller and, sure enough, I was playing the stage. Unfortunately, I realized this too late to avoid dying and I didn't get to do anything with it. :(

Even some of the original's graphical errors have been preserved, and while I haven't fully beaten it, the first half of the game I played seems super accurate to the original outside of HD resolutions and widescreen support.

These mappers were numerous and each acts differently from each other, so just having the raw data from the roms isn't enough to emulate the game as you'd need to know the mapper the game uses (if it uses any), whether or not it has a battery etc, this info is only available to you when you open the cart, thanks to this necessity the iNES format was born.

It boggles my mind how aggressive Nintendo is with this while some other companies are really open or don't care about this.
People are still modding DOOM & Quake, even making games to be sold with the engines. SEGA is letting fans not only make rom hacks, they encourage it by letting you install them in the Genesis PC emulator on steam and the fans doing an HD Remake of Sonic 2.
    Nevermind hiring fan-game makers.
Then you have Nintendo...who get mad at the very idea someone might enjoy their games differently than they were designed.

Did they found prototypes ROMs of SUPER MARIO WORLD!, or they just early sprites?
Because one of the things I want to do before death is to play at least one genuine prototype of Super Mario World and Sonic 1 (Especially the very first prototype of Sonic 1 from 1990).

    • @vgtheory

If the source is separated into different versions representing the course of development, then theoretically different builds could be generated as roms in much the same way as we have the Sonic 2/3/CD prototypes. There were enough differences in the early prototypes of SMW that I would love to see what they had running when those original photos were in the magazines back in the day.

Even that is illegal for an emulator. By law only clean room reverse engineering is allowed.
