What do you think of trying a pipe wrench?? Sure to cause stress induced balding!!!!
make a micrometer
I think you should make a draw knife
Raid is dogshit and it's crazy how casually TH-camrs will say that they love the game. Although I too would probably sell my soul for the dumptrucks of money they offer.
Adze or an inshave
It’s absolutely gorgeous. The pattern is super cool yet super subtle

I love the hammer it looks great, I've been watching for a long time now and it's amazing to see just how far you've come. A booming buisness and a lovely family. I wish you nothing but the best. I do hope to see a longer in depth project like the Viking sword again soon.
I still remember teenager alec hammering away in that little shed :)
We'll never know if it's a real framing hammer until you frame out an entire freestanding structure with it. Time to build yourself a new entire house with this thing!
I'm blown away by how many people Raid still supports even after so many years.
As both a framer and a very long-time fan of your work, I'd literally build a house for this hammer. Besides it not sporting my prefered framing hammer "waffle," the story, travel, pup-training and craftsmanship are real winners here! Also, when will we have another 20-plus-part series?? ;P 💙💚
I do love it when leather gets lathered. When the handle was set up I suddenly had the urge to get a Doner Kebab.
I think it’s time for a longer part series! Like the Viking sword or bike series. Maybe an endeavor into uncharted territories like armor smithing?
I've always wondered about stuff like this (how Smiths use spare bits). Be neat to see what else you guys can make. Sort of like a Scrapwood Challenge...
Random thought... I wonder how Nickel Bronze alloy would work for a knife? (I was browsing through materials available in McMaster-Carr [it's addictive], and thought... Hmm, probably not as durable as 5160, but better than my chinesium Buck knife.)
for our dutch viewers chinesium is pisbakkenstaal so low quality steel edit or any type of low quality metal thanks for ashton howard for remembering that
I'd imagine fairly well. Robinson Foundry made a knife out of bronze (I think he used aluminum bronze) and several videos after he was using it in the video and said he uses quite often in the shop and still working great
@@linuxstreamer8910 I'm fairly certain chinesium isn't steel.
@@justinbanks2380 of course bronze would work, it was the defining material for an age of humanity just before we figured out iron. The biggest issue was availability of the two main metals at the time.
@@ashtonhoward5582 chinesium
Any metal whose properties fail to meet the expectations for the role in which it is found, and whose source is probably "Made In China". "
Love the subtle "and thank you Jamie for not finding another job while I was gone" dig at Isaiah 😅
That is a beautiful hammer! Swoopy, light and the lines just all flow together. It looks almost like a "modern" warhammer that some futuristic knight would carry around the battlefield.
That is beautiful! We need more Damascus tool recreations like this and the socket wrench please. 👌
‘The leather handle they used to have’ they still make them and easily the best handle for a Estwing hammer 👌🏻
Good to have some alec content back
Love how you put together this collaborative effort. With Will growing his channel and you continuing with yours find time to do a collaborative effort between your shops and his as you move between the US and Uk.
I am so thankful that you respect those who work with you... gives me hope for the future 😇
Awesome to see yall make something so simple, and turn it into a beautifully made masterpiece.
Kudos to you and Sam both on the framing hammer, also I greatly look forward to seeing your next build series.
Absolutely beautiful job guys. Hopefully you get great use out of it for many years to come my friends. Can't wait to see more videos soon. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Forge on. Fab on. Weld on. Keep making. God bless.
That damascus turnout super unique!! I love it, nice work both of you! Maybe you should do a style reversal challenge, make an integral forging hammer and a pair of tongs that are hidden tang like a knife!
It is amazing how the latter just slides down the geometry of the hammer head into the neck, just stunning
You're great in the Hand Sandy department. I could watch you all day.
Awesome hammer only down fall from using leather handle hammers (past exp) is your missing the pommel plate that is on all tools and knifes that are leather stack handles, the glue/epoxy will separate from the steel. Pommel plate gets pressed on and the end tang gets heated and riveted over. But the hammer is a beautiful skillful design as is everything you make 👍
This is the right answer. Looks good now. But that handle will work loose and will have nothing to keep it there. How do I know? As a HVAC installer using a hammer with a leather stack grip being held on only by the peened plate....
Crazy is doing fantastically. Well done.
Glad to hear Yogo is still around, was getting worried!!
It'd be really nice to see what the Montana shop is doing from time to time. Maybe that team can make a unique piece?
Thats a framing hammer anyone should be proud to own.
I feel like you should make a little soundproof enclosure for your dogs that they can get in and out of so they can have more peace and quiet when they want to sleep. Could be a fun and useful video idea
Most beautiful hammer I’ve seen. Beautiful Damascus. The leather too. So nice. Greta job guys
I use the 28 ounce Vaughn wooden hammer 🔨 It's my favorite and used them for almost 20 years now. Gotta have the waffle end tho so you can strike the nail in any direction and it's going in.. it also saves on smashing fingers from the head slipping off a nail. Just don't hit your thumb lol
Looks really nice, and the process is just fascinating for me
How come everything you do ends up so beautiful?!
More content, love the build and the peeps you touched base with, keep on keepin' on
honestly, this is my favorite production thus far. beautiful hammer mate.
I really dig the hex head, still looks forged.
In how its made I recall them stacking plastic and leather.
I do wish you had used a bit from the face cut to cap the end of the hammer handle
every time I see your forge and workshop I get envies.
Brilliant! Now you just have to make a Damascus leather handle from all the leather handle plugs you just made!
It looks very modern and im all about it. The leader handle was a nice choice too
I love the hammer! And um... Maybe i missed it but did you forget your touch mark?
3 cheers to Jamie!! The real ⭐️
What a lovely piece. Let us have some more "off piste" stuff such as the dog trials
As a carpenter I can say I never wanted to try a hammer as much as I do this one. It looks amazing so far.
3:49 *Thinking to self* "Hey, that looks like a warhammer."
Hey Alec, can you do a warhammer build?
That leather was definitely the right choice for the handle. Came out looking great!
Great team, thanks all. Loving the vids
Would love that hammer! I’m a carpenter in Scotland. Been asking you in the comments for as long as Barker street to make a claw hammer! 😍😍
As a framer, this makes for a very good carpenter framing hammer mix. But the claw is too curved for a typical framing hammer and the striking face is in a weird spot. It looks amazing, but some tweaks I’d make are a slightly thicker shaft, a wider and more straight on striking head, and a straighter claw. All in all great work, you’re doin more than I could ever😂
I was looking for this comment. The top of the head desperately needs to be perpendicular to the tang
That is an optically correct design….wicked👍
You could always try making either a drill chuck or a Damascus file
Also great video
I don't know much about tools; but I imagine a Damascus File would be for looks since it would have soft/hard steel spontaneously on a what should be completely hard surface...
@@thespaztagonist984 Most damascus is made with steel that can get equally hard, so it shouldn't be an issue at all.
And most files aren't all that hard anyway.
Some files are as low as 50 rockwell, which even mediocre (hardenable) steel can do easily.
So files should be okay, especially if dedicated to only non ferrous metals, and rasps are no issue at all.
As an carpenter and part time blade Smith. I need to forge my own hammer. Locks plenty fun and useful.
You and Sam did an awesome job on that. I love the pattern.
As a carpenter, I absolutely love the look of this hammer! Awesome!
Forge a socket set out of all those hammer plugs! You already made the ratchet so it's the next logical step
great hammer. like to see sam more seems like a great guy and good blacksmith in his own right.
Great job. Looks like a Ferrier style at the head.
Would like to see you forge a large Damascus leg vice next
As usual, another stunning piece.
You really need to start producing these😍
Think we found a new hammer addition to the shop Alec!
Beautiful! You should collaborate with FZ-making knives and get some of their amazing Wootz and then integrate that as layers in your own Damascus. That would be spectacular I think. Easy for me to say not having to do any of the work. as well.
Or you could always try making the wootz yourself. You seem to be able to do whatever you put your mind too!
That came out really nice bro. Good job.
I am a carpenter and that has got to be the best looking carpenter's hammer ever created.
"What other workshop tools would you like to see me make?"
Holdfast, Hand Plane, Tri Square, though I think the Hand Plane would be the most awesome.
wow that is fine craftsmanship
Yea that came out epic! I love the handle and I had no idea that is how they are made. So cool!
nicely done sam and alex! I like that the top of the hammer head is all smooth and continuous. very neat!
Really nice Alec, I especially loved the handle.
Haven’t watched you in over a year alec good to see you still doing well for yourself coming from Ireland
Very cool, thanks for showing us.
Love the channel and that's a cool hammer. QUICK QUESTION. I thought that one of the reasons for a leather ring handle is that the leather has some natural give to it making it a good grip. Isn't that lost if you add epoxy to the equation? I recently made a KABAR knife replica and used leather rings on my handle (I made a video of it on my channel if you curious). I just soaked the leather in neats foot oil and then compressed it on to the handle and pinned on the pommel. I like the slight sponginess of the leather handle. does the epoxy detract from that? Oh and I vote for one of those drills that has a pushable handle on it where the pushing down on the handle causes the spinning of the drill or bit driver...
You're exactly right and Alec just ruined the leather handle by epoxying it. He now just has a plastic/epoxy handle with a leather pattern in it, in essence.
Absolutly true
What he did is fine. The epoxy is only going to be holding the layers together so very little will be touched and you still have the natural grain of the leather adding a lot of grip. Estwing goes and adds a layer of epoxy on the outside of the leather completely eliminating that. It also chips off as you use it and looks terrible after a short while. The one thing I would have done differently is to add a steel plate at the bottom and rivet it on to help keep the very last layers nice and tight over time.
an added bit of cross hatching would make that hammer head grip better as you make contact with the nail. I have swung an Estwing for many years framing and drying in Houses, and a slick face hammer makes it harder to do the job unless it is finishing where the hammer face being crosshatched would mar the work and require extra finishing as the hammerhead would mark every full driven nail
Great looking hammer! The leather handle - great idea!
Very nice make, I too love those Estwing leather handles, my dad had one forever. A suggestion for a cheeky smith, make a slug out of nails to make a hammer. Cheers!
That Alec is one beautiful hammer, I think you have done a freaking spectacular job, and the final product is one too be proud of, 👍🏼👍🏼🇦🇺🇦🇺🦘🦘Cheers from Melbourne Australia
love the hammer Alec! But from personal experience i would make the striking head face a little bigger, i miss a lot😂 love the patterns in it tho, maybe you could start selling them? keep up the good work.
Looks great, I like my framers to have a magnetic nail starter these days, would be interesting to know how that could be incorporated.
Love when you can see the morphed steel in the pattern, as opposed to preserving a pattern
That hammer is beautiful. I was hoping it would go up for sale on the website...
Jamie is back 🙌
he never left
beautiful form
Love the shape! Great work Alec!
I LOVE THE LEATHER HANDLE LOOK.
only Alec Steele could make a hammer look like a sword
not damn…. that is one beautiful piece of art! A piece that’s practical and usable! Love it!!!!!
finally back to the old alec. make some damascus and making something out of it
3:20 Welcome to the yard shipbreaker. Keep an eye on your oxygen and remember. Measure twice, cut once.
I absolutely loved this video
Alec, I love your videos, and I am a massive fan so I mean no I’ll feelings, but your content recently has felt very different than the videos you were producing when I first subscribed.
I understand channels evolve and your content will change as you Tailor it to your audience, but I miss the big projects, in depth content where it spans many more detailed videos than 1-2 and some of the informative content you put out using basic hand tools and the theory of blacksmithing.
As I said, I still love the channel and your content, it just feels different and higher level then before :(
i feel the same, i'm less excited for each video. it feels like the deep spirit is slowly dissipating. I still also miss the long content series. i understand he has a busier life now but a 10 episode series over an entire year isint asking for too much. it doesn't have to be every week. but it'd be nice to look forward to a long term project.
I also miss the excitement of new projects and smithing
I think what might have happened is the small amount of negative comments drowned us positive long-timers out because "EW 30 PART SERIES EW" but a lot of us came on board for this 'journeyman' adventure of learning mistakes and solutions and the solutions failing so do it the proper way.
I don't know what these people have in their lives where they want IMMEDIATE content; but from the acknowledgement in the past years; I see that's how things took a turn :c
He referenced a while ago that they hadn’t planned to be away from Montana for so long and then with the pandemic they realized how much they would miss being away from family so he had to build out the UK shop again. I imagine he may get back to a bigger project. I also wonder how tough sourcing material is right now too for both his house and his projects.
I hear ya, hopefully it'll straighten itself out.
Damn it looks amazing. That handle is 10/10
Having a Sam in the workshop. Brings back memories
Really nice work, it's a beautiful looking hammer.
lovely lines!
Bro this is some QUALITY content
Hey Alec, I think u need a project to really challenge you. Something akin to the engraved, gold inlaid sword. I suggest a tool that is similar to ornate watchmaking... Fireball tools could be a good place for ideas.
That is truly a beautiful piece. That being said being a farmer I think I lost a finger just watching you swing it!
Looks so epic!
Epoxy is a poor choice for the handle, just because it will create hard ridges between the leather, a flexible glue like barge would be much better
But couldn't you grind down to the valleys of those ridges to eliminate them, or will that induce weak spots in the construction?
Like most of his creations, it will be unlikely that it gets enough use to matter. It's mostly a decorative item.
I’ve been asking you to make a claw hammer for like 5 years!! To cool
That's a piece of craftsmanship! Nice work.
Good on ya, those aftershokz are da bomb! I love mine.
@Alec Steele awesome work like always, have you ever made a rams head would love to see your technique
Thank you so much for your hard work been interested in blacksmithing for about 10 years but never done anything about it, I have to say you Sir are my inspiration to start hammering steel bought me a forge finally
Thank you for inspiring people
I'd loved to see you make the forge masters hammer from the mandalorian.
