At a Wheeling Nailers hockey game vs. Elmira Jackals on Feburary 7th, 2009! Game tied and went to shoot out! This is the absolute worst call I've ever seen!
Soon as that net comes off the Moorings, whatever happens afterward doesn't count... Geez, not only do they screw up Interference calls (which is too broad of a rule anyway), but they blow this blatant one too.
According to the ECHL rulebook, the attacking player maintained forward progress as outlined in rule 24.2. (not exactly a spin-o-rama, but the same intention). Goals are allowed during play when the net is dislodged by the defender as outlined in rule 63.6. The problem is, the attacker dislodged the net. This exact scenario is not addressed and therefor is implied that this is NOT a goal. Again, rule 63.6 only says its a good goal if the defender dislodges the net.
@buua19 No, no, no! Under Hockey Canada rules the instant the net if off you blow the play dead and order a reshot! Rule 4.9 Situation 17. It says that if the net being dislodged is accidental, immediately award a re-shot. UNLESS the puck went into the net OR the shot was complete before the net became dislodged.
@SilentStryk07 Rules depend on League and as far as I am aware the moment the opposing player comes into contact with the net it's ruled dead. The player also took the shot on a MOVING net thus not allowing the goalie proper defence. When the ECHL reviewed this they came down on the ref hard.
I'm going to make a educated comment. Section 10 of the Hockey Canada Rule Book (most rules here are the same and universal in all leagues of hockey) Rule 10.4 states that "Any goal scored, other than covered in the Official Rules shall not be allowed." Situation 7 of this rule states that "No goal is to be allowed if the goal off it's mooring whether or not the goal was deliberately knocked from its mooring" Correct call: No goal. - A Hockey Canada/ Alberta Official
In a penalty shot, if the goalie moves the net and the attacker does not score, then a reshot is allowed. If, however, the attacker scores, the goal is accepted and noted down. Correct call.
If an attacker knocks the defending net from its moorings without being forced by a defender then play is whistled dead and a goal, if scored, is disallowed. The ref blew the call.
No he wasn't and that was the problem. On our local news that night they had a replay from behind the net and the ECHL ruled it as well stating it was the players skate.
@xlxRAPT0Rxlx that was a terribly blown call you are correct that a goal can be awarded but only if the goal is displaced by the defending player, in this case the individual taking the shot is the one who disloged the net and therefore it is a no goal
Sabrefan is right, I aswell am a ref in canada and if the puck gets shot before the net comes off accidentally then it is a goal, if it gets shot after the net is accidentally off then it is no goal, if the net is on purposely taken off the they will get a penalty but the goal still wouldn't count
ProjectMachines so my team scored a goal right when there goalie kicked the net of not even a inch when it was tied and called it no goal should that have counted btw are team didn’t Kick there net off
I'm a ref as well, and the only reason that a goal can count after the net moves is when the back of the net leaves the ice but the moorings are still in place. The net moves off the moorings in this video before the puck crosses the goal line, NO GOAL
I hate refs like this. I'm a ref and a hockey player, and refs like these are the reason that coaches and players don't like me, even though I'm a good and fair ref
@SilentStryk07 Hockey Canada Official Rule Book, Rule 10.4 (h):" Any goal scored, other than covered in the Official Rules shall not be allowed." Situation 7 of this rule states that "No goal is to be allowed if the goal off it's mooring whether or not the goal was deliberately knocked from its mooring", Period no discrepancy there.
@James76012 Well I'm not sure about this league but if it's the same as NHL the player can skate backwards so long as the puck continues to travel forward. Looks to me like the puck stopped moving towards the goal line and it should have been disallowed.
i'm not sure about the net coming off. in my opinion it should not be a goal, but i don't know the rule. however, it should not have been a goal because clearly forward progress stopped.
It was ruled a goal, and as far as the rest of the season goes as far as I know he wasn't allowed to ref this season either. A big reason why, he had so many people outside wait for him and threaten him he was afraid they were going to hurt him! After the video the crowd went insane and began throwing items onto the ice! It got ugly!
@x30xSabresFan But, if and when the net is removed from its holders and original position the play is imediatly blown dead even if the puck, "was" going to go in, it must be in.
@oilersman95 But this is not a regular goal, look under penatly shots. I had a situation like this in the game. Shoot out, goalie ACCIDENTLY knocks the net off. I should have awarded a re-shot. The Rule you are commenting on refers during the game. In fact, if you read on in situation 7, it clearly states "...mooring, except under Rule 4.9 (b) - Penalty Shot..." Case and point. The proper procedure is to stop play immediately and order a re-shot. Also read situation 1 for Rule 10.1.
@SilentStryk07 This IS a bad call. At least for NHL standards. I dont know about other leagues rules, but in the NHL, the rule is if the net gets dislodged before the puck goes in, it is no goal PERIOD. It doesnt matter how the net comes off its moorings, but if it does before the puck goes in, no goal.
It's the wrong call but it's not a huge deal of a wrong call or anything. I had to watch it twice to realize what happened and the ref doesn't have that luxury.
@LordDisQo he never saw the net come off. Ive talked to him. He was so focused on the puck to where he didnt notice the net come off and b/c the other 2 linesmen were not in a proper position to see this they couldnt help him and now they actually changed ps procedures to where the back linesmen now stands at center ice instead of between the benches. Everyone makes a mistake. do you think hes happy w/ this. they still made the play offs by 1 point so i dont see why everyone still rips on this.
he entered into goalkeepers area first with his skates (can u do this in Canada by the roles? ), afterwords he fired that puck by him displaced net which is goal must be disallowed !
Here is why the goal counted for all you people who really don't know the rules. YES the net came off... we can all see that however he had beat the goaltender any way and shot the puck before the puck cross the goal line. GOOD GOAL!
@JesseFC101 Not exactly, this deals with the goaltender dislodging the net, if the player does it a different rule applies, Rule 10.4 (h) see my comment above.
@x30xSabresFan Not all mistakes are equal. The mistake the referee made here is NOT like a goalie making a mistake by allowing a goal. And the angle excuse you came up with is bullshit. Referees are trained and required to watch for these kinds of things. If he's going to explain his mistake by saying he was at a bad angle then he's admitting incompetence, which is just as bad. Oh and BTW, refs CAN face repercussions for making such blatantly bad calls, sometimes by demotion or even being fired.
Dan Desjarlais doesn't matter when he shot it, it's about when the puck crosses the line. The same goes for when a pick crosses the line after the buzzer even though it was shot before, it's no goal
@x30xSabresFan Are you serious? No matter where you stand, you can EASILY notice the net getting knocked off. Furthermore, he is responsible for being in a position to make proper calls. Even if his position was a valid excuse (which it's not), then he made a mistake by standing in the wrong spot to properly observe the play. And this is the ECHL. They employ only ONE referee for games, not two. Shows how much you know. EVERYONE knows how bad this call was, except you. Says a lot about you...
15 years later and I still come back to this video every once in awhile
Haha, that's crazy man. What reminds you?
Soon as that net comes off the Moorings, whatever happens afterward doesn't count... Geez, not only do they screw up Interference calls (which is too broad of a rule anyway), but they blow this blatant one too.
That's a goal! Great call!
According to the ECHL rulebook, the attacking player maintained forward progress as outlined in rule 24.2. (not exactly a spin-o-rama, but the same intention). WHAT HOW WAS THAT A GOAL

i was there that night all hell broke loose. defiantly the worst call in hockey history!
I agree. not enough ads. need more ad rape.
I'm going to make a educated comment.

- A Hockey Canada/ Alberta Official
That's pretty bad
If this happened in the NHL, it would be NO GOAL - Net off moorings. As this isn't the NHL, I don't know about this.
LOL that ref is out of his mind.
In a penalty shot, if the goalie moves the net and the attacker does not score, then a reshot is allowed. If, however, the attacker scores, the goal is accepted and noted down. Correct call.
What is the bad call? The puck "going backwards" or the goalie kicking the net off in the shootout mid shot
Holy shit that ref should be fired. OUT OF A CANNON!
If an attacker knocks the defending net from its moorings without being forced by a defender then play is whistled dead and a goal, if scored, is disallowed. The ref blew the call.
even if the player didn't hit the net, the puck appeared to be brought backwards enough to call it dead. bad call. must have been kelly sutherland.
No he wasn't and that was the problem. On our local news that night they had a replay from behind the net and the ECHL ruled it as well stating it was the players skate.

i wuz there when it happened...
@SilentStryk07
You are wrong, according to NHL rules, that only works if the person who does knock the net off is on the team that gave up the goal.

@rockerseven nah in some places there is only a miximum of 1meterx1.5 meters of white ice at a time
i'm not sure about the net coming off. in my opinion it should not be a goal, but i don't know the rule. however, it should not have been a goal because clearly forward progress stopped.
that was such a filthy move
It was ruled a goal, and as far as the rest of the season goes as far as I know he wasn't allowed to ref this season either. A big reason why, he had so many people outside wait for him and threaten him he was afraid they were going to hurt him!

that was a nice move by the player. never see it before
@SilentStryk07 This IS a bad call. At least for NHL standards. the skater was also behind the goal line.
Least legal goal ever.
@x30xSabresFan No. The player's right skate nailed the mooring and knocked the net off BEFORE the puck even left the ice.
anyone calling this a goal just straight up knows absolutely nothing about hockey and if you play, do us all a favour and quit now
i think he got the goal simply because it was an outrageous move.
regardless of whether or not it shouldve counted... it was an awesome deke.
@LordDisQo he never saw the net come off. Ive talked to him. He was so focused on the puck to where he didnt notice the net come off and b/c the other 2 linesmen were not in a proper position to see this they couldnt help him and now they actually changed ps procedures to where the back linesmen now stands at center ice instead of between the benches. you cant score after the net is moved. terrible call. he also slightly interfered with the goalie.
Towards the sun.
@FlyersBIATCH You people really need to read. The entire damn league reviewed it and the goal was NO GOOD. The ref was all but fired.
he entered into goalkeepers area first with his skates (can u do this in Canada by the roles? ), afterwords he fired that puck by him displaced net which is goal must be disallowed !
i'm not a fan of the rule in this case because he wouldve scored if it was moored but it wasnt and the rule is there so it's no goal
@Aggort it is no goal net was off wayyyyy before in
i know you can't stop forward motion so (regardless of the net situation) does that count from a motion perspective??
The net was of for like 3 seconds before he shot. that no goal!
Here is why the goal counted for all you people who really don't know the rules. YES the net came off... we can all see that however he had beat the goaltender any way and shot the puck before the puck cross the goal line. GOOD GOAL!
Kyle Johnson NO GOAL. The pick didn't cross the line until after the net moved, so it's no goal
Oh it is very hard to catch, especially at my angle. I was so pissed cus it was my 21st birthday!
@JesseFC101 Not exactly, this deals with the goaltender dislodging the net, if the player does it a different rule applies, Rule 10.4 (h) see my comment above.
forward motion all the way, but net was knocked off well before puck went in by SHOOTER! Should not have been allowed.
@XXDemonXSlayer13XX Yeah re-watching it I noticed that. Bad call.
It would have been a sick goal it the net wasn't knocked off
was it also scored inside the crease?
usually on videos like this, i would defend the referee. I just can't here.
Somebody tell me- was it RULED goal or no goal?
To me it is NOT A GOAL.
i don't care about the call, that was a great move lol
and if you don't beleive me look in the ECHL official rulebook on page 103 section 63.6
i am a nailers fan that was a bad call it was ruled a goal because ref pointed down at the ice
If you look, the player shoots the puck UNDER the goalie, IMO, goal
i was at this game bullshit call.. it was about the second time they pushed the net off
what happened the goal counted?
@x30xSabresFan Not all mistakes are equal. The mistake the referee made here is NOT like a goalie making a mistake by allowing a goal.
And the angle excuse you came up with is bullshit. Referees are trained and required to watch for these kinds of things. If he's going to explain his mistake by saying he was at a bad angle then he's admitting incompetence, which is just as bad.

@FlyersBIATCH dude how can you even call yourself a flyers fan, net comes off play is dead, end of story, net is off before shot is released
no fucking goal. the puck reached the net just after the player moved it
Good call. Good goal.
Must have been a Russian ref.
how is this a good goal?
the player moved the net the goalie didnt.
that was a bad call
It is a good goal. Of coarse it's debatable but it he shot it before the nets went off there moorings ArcticCatsRock
Dan Desjarlais doesn't matter when he shot it, it's about when the puck crosses the line. The same goes for when a pick crosses the line after the buzzer even though it was shot before, it's no goal
thats a goal!! wtf?
Hey REF!!! Are you pregnant? Cuz you just missed 2 PERIODS!!!!!
nice try but nobody can deke like datsuk. check out granlund's attempt vs sweden. even he can't do it
That was so not a goal.
shit nice goal
@x30xSabresFan Are you serious? No matter where you stand, you can EASILY notice the net getting knocked off. Furthermore, he is responsible for being in a position to make proper calls. EVERYONE knows how bad this call was, except you. Says a lot about you...
lol no goal
Coz as sey....
@NYR1926 yea dude and go RANGERS lol
@rockerseven I agree. Way too much white.
That's a good goal. The puck would've went in if the net was still in place. Good call
Jamal Jamalsen but the pick didn't cross the line until after the net moved. I'm a ref I know what I'm talking about
@LordDisQo lol demotion
nice deke
good call
