As a stylist and someone who has had the devacut they do NOT rack the hair. Also long layer isn't a devacut, devacut is usually at a 90 degree angle. Sorry for your experience always run when they say they never seen your hair texture. It upsets me when stylist do this!!!
Blessed Natural long layered isn't a devacut but it's great to have the option. I don't like deep layers but I do like the idea of trimming individual curls dry
Agreed, I had a Deva cut with a certified Deva Stylist, My hair has never looked so good, and I can wear it up or down and it is beautiful. It is all about the stylist! I researched for 2 months befire going in and I was charged a reasonable price $57 for the full Diva experiance if an hour and a half. My stylist also recommended seeing me in 6 months because she knows I am growing my hair out. She said if I need a trim before then she would just charge me for a bangs trim. So important to find somone who knows your hair and listens if not ladies it is time to walk out. Do not let someone cut your hair if you are not totally comfortable. More important to trust you stylist than it is to suffer a couple minutes of discomfort telling them you are not going to proceed with the cut!
This salon isn't owned by Devacurl, they have stylists come to their school, learn some things like the devacut and then they go back to their salon as a devacertified stylist. I recommend that ladies just try to go to Devacurl the salon (Devachan)
ugh thats annoying. And that scissors sectioning thing disturbs me. As a stylist i would never use something sharp to section hair. I have actually seen devacuts that cut in sections but still in the similar manner they do curl by curl. A stylist that doesn't listen to you is not a good stylist, and "certification" does not always mean competence unfortunately. You are correct in that a good shaping cut lasts 6 months and one three month trim in between to keep the hair in optimal condition. If you get a chance and its not too far away i recommend a trip to an actual deva cut salon. They are more expensive but most people really feel its worth it and from what i've seen it is a viable cutting method for all curly types :-)
You are far more tactful and patient than I would've been. So sorry you had such a disrespectful stylist. Very helpful to share your overall experience so other people going in know to advocate for themselves and what they deserve.
+Colleen Anne thank you so much Colleen!! I really appreciate your comment💕💕 I definitely learned a lot from the experience and I am so happy to help anyone else going into a similar situation.
lol I'm not a hair stylist either; I can BARELY do my own hair, but when you said she separated your hair with SCISSORS, I did a double take and said out loud, "what????" 😂😂😂 wooooow.
Bianca Beton yes iv had ppl tell me omg where did u get ur hair...um excuse me ...my mother ! i was born with this...or ppl say omg ur hairs so nice bt u look blk...yes im mixd bt my hairs thick ppl always try to pet my hair its annoying to be othrs fascination
HairByPierre. yes im Mexican cheroke 2 other native american scottish and black my hairs wavey and curly and thick bt straightens bone straight and silky...i was at hair store w my bestie buying her weave hair and some random lady came up to me and was like excuse me which hair are u wearing...iwas like this is my real hair shes like oh wow can i touch it ...smh
jasmine ervin yea African Americans are a mix of Native American, African, and European. We are just as mixed as Dominicans or Cubans the only difference is the boat stop and the language due to colonization. I get that a lot too, people assuming my hair is weave. It's really sad. People need to get educated cause being mixed isn't what determines our hair texture or length. There are 100% Africans with straight or loose textured curly hair
Oh no!!!! Why did you stay? And parting your hair with scissors is a blazing red flag. It also looks like one side is longer. Did she check the angle when she was cutting?
This is exactly why im scared to go to any hair salon its like some hairstylist are so careless and get an attitude when you correct them. How are you going to try and tell someone about whats growing out of their head?
I had the same experience with Caucasian women being so fascinated with my hair. So I get it girl! I had 5 Caucasian room mates in college who would come in my room (while I was blow drying my hair) and watch me as if I was a TV show.. They just dont understand how uncomfortable we can be becaue they're looking at our hair as if its "different". Our hair is unique and beautiful, not diffrrent! But your hair is beautiful hun. 👍😊
+PowerInYourCurl I've never had to lol I'm a licensed cosmetologist so I always communicate and take control of my appointments. But I know it can be intimidating if you're not a hairstylist but just remember it's your hair; and if she's doing something that's hurting you or causing you any type of distress you need to let her know. I'm sorry you had that experience but I'm glad you like your hair, just communicate better next time or end the appointment.
I do my own hair, because I have trust issues with some of these so called stylist. BUT! If I decided to go to one, I'd be sure to speak up, and wouldn't hesitate walking out either. I give 0 fawks about a stylist and how she might feel about it either.
omg when stylists rake through my hair with a small rat tail comb top to bottom or combing when its dry literally makes have anxiety so badly. i hate feeling like my hair is getting ripped it makes me just wanna scream!!!! i havent been to the salon in 3 years because of this and this method seems so interesting but im so afraid. sorry you had that experience your hair does look amazing though!
That's awful. She should know better. I would have asked for the manager. I'm getting a deva trim next month, I'm going to a location in NYC to someone who has been there 8 years (she's black too lol) I had the consultation and she was good enough to ask me what my goals were and said I don't have to get the deep layered devacut. All she's going to do is neaten my ends and reshape what's necessary. She did a friends hair exactly as described I think your hair looks pretty good in Spite of the bad techniques
Fine Natural Hair and Faith sure.. np... coz i dono why watching deva cut these days is soothing for me :P.. coz i had gotten on in aug n nvr felt better :P
So sorry to hear you had a bad experience. I had a similar experience when working with a Deva Certified stylist when I was starting out on my natural hair journey. She gave me extremely minimal information regarding care (mostly just about how to apply the products she was sending me home with), disregarded my feedback that she wasn't putting in enough layers and was seriously judgemental about the fact that I detangle using my fingers AND brush. I have seen many curly bloggers using brushes in the shower and they have gorgeous hair so it seems pretty clear to me that plenty of people have success using this method. Also she didn't give me any hair assessment at all which was about 70% of the reason why I shelled out 150$ in the first place. When I called back the next day to say that the cut was not what I wanted and needed an adjustment, I ended up spending the whole day corresponding with them arguing about whether the cut was technically 'triangular' or not before I finally just ended up requesting a refund, which I have never done after a LIFETIME of terrible haircuts. Anyways! Sorry about the rant I guess I am still feeling kind of burnt by the whole experience. This place also got rave reviews so it just goes to show you that ratings don't mean much. I would much rather work with an inexperienced stylist who was willing to listen to my opinions and work with me than someone who is a curly 'expert' who can't listen. I think after 30 years I'm finally starting to learn that no matter what anyone tells you, no one knows what your hair needs better than you do.
Your hair looks beautiful! I'm so sorry about your experience at the salon. I've been a hairdresser for a long time now and have many curly haired clients of different ethnicities and I always cut their hair after I shampoo, deep condition, and blowdry it straight. I do that to only trim what's absolutely necessary, or only as much as the client is ready to part with. This method has worked for me both as a stylist and fellow curly/wavy/frizzy haired girl.
Jennifer Betty Romero I totally agree with you. You cut what is comfortable for the client. Devacut or not you have to remember the amount that is taken is super important. Not all products work for everyone either. But FYI a trim is a haircut and a haircut is a trim. We use the same methods if it's a 1/4 of an inch or more. People are sensitive about that word "haircut" it's makes everyone think it's a foot of hair coming off so using "trims" softens the impact.
this is why i do my own hair. i trim my own hair, i style my own hair, i take full responsibility for my hair. to many horror stories about rogue stylist.
I was about to announce PROUDLY that I would NEVER let a stylist abuse my hair...then I remember back when I had relaxed hair a stylist straightened my hair with a hot comb. I told her that you aren't supposed to hot comb relaxed hair. She insisted that she grew women's hair out all the time using the hot comb on relaxed hair - and kept right on going...and I sat there watching in horror thinking this can't be right. I never returned to her chair. The next time I got a relaxer a 3 inch circumference of hair broke off the side of my head at the new growth line (about an inch from my scalp - when my hair was shoulder length). I grew it out for a year then cut it into a bob to blend it. The style chair nightmare can happen to anyone.
Thanks for the review. I would never go back to that woman. all of the things you told her about your particular hair and she just discarded it as nothing. that shows that she has no respect for her clients.
See this is why I will never go to a salon for a haircut. I don't believe that deva cuts were created with our hair in mind. Your hair turned out very beautiful though! :)
Thank you for responding! I'm old school. I cowash my hair and then use a detangling product (homemade flaxseed and marshmallow root gel) and then I part my hair the way I want it to fall, twist it in small twists and cut. This has worked for me. It may not be the way that a lot of people feel comfortable with but it has surely worked for me.
+Skye Blue of course! ☺️ and I have actually heard of a lot of people having success using that method to cut their so I just may try it next! Thank you for the advice 😁
Unprofessional stylists is one reason I went natural. I got so sick of going to stylists who overprocessed my hair and had terrible attitudes for no reason. One stylist put permanent hair dye and a relaxer at the same time even though she told me she was putting a rinse. She did this same thing to my sister and a friend of mine (who also have very long hair), so I know it had to be intentional.
wow, girl... I know the feeling. I've been natural for 9 yrs now. I decided to straighten at my 4 yr mark with two separate failed attempts. Both said they new how to do natural hair, and they did, but no two heads are alike. I have high porosity, very dense with fine strands of 4A, b and c coils. LOVE my hair, but ugh... the maintenance is time consuming and temperamental. The 1st stylist fried my hair with blow dryer, pressing comb and flat iron, and the second stylist ripped my hair out from raking through my hair. Even after I told her to comb from ends to root. And both washed my hair loose, which I told them I NEVER do (I always wash in twist) because it tangles so badly. I went from bra strap length to a neck length bob, all because they were too impatient for my hair type. I haven't been to a stylist since.
Girl no! My jaw dropped when you said you went from bra strap to neck length 😨 I don't blame you for not seeing a stylist after that! I would have serious trust issues after that lol. How do you cut your hair by yourself?
Lol, I do everything in twist, including trimming. I part my hair down the center and twist. I simply cut the desired amount equally from my twist, compare all sides, snip a little more if need and I'm done. My hair always comes out even.
Wow! You are SUCH a nice person. I can't believe you tipped the stylist after the way she treated you and your hair. I used to cocktail and I was also a waitress so I'm impressed that you still left a tip. I'm wondering if the woman who cut your hair, cut your hair in sections because she wanted to get the cut done as quickly as possible. I wouldn't be surprised if she had another hair cut scheduled soon after yours. Maybe she didn't want to spend the time needed to do your cut properly because she thought it didn't make a difference - which it does. Luckily, your hair still turned out great but I'm sorry you had go to through such an unpleasant and rough experience. I hope you won't mind my suggesting this... you seem to know a lot about cutting and styling curly hair. I don't know what you do for a living but I honestly think that you'd make a wonderful hair stylist and could specialize in doing Deva Cuts. At least you would know what NOT to do and I have no doubt that would treat your clients with respect and kindness. And most importantly, you would listen to them. BTW, I'm a new subscriber and look forward to seeing your other videos.
Ohmygoodness your comment seriously just made my day😭💕💕Thank you so much for taking the time to type all of that out! Now that you mention it, that does make sense that she may have been rushing because she had another appointment.. And I have never thought of cutting hair but I really appreciate the suggestion. All of your kind words are really encouraging and mean a lot. Thank you for subscribing and I hope you enjoy the videos! 😊
Thanks for sharing your story! I went to a non-AA salon to get a deva cut a few years back and had a mostly good experience, but didn't like the way she tried to style my hair afterwards. I knew from previous reviews that some non-AA stylist are great for cutting, but not for styling, so I knew I had to go home and re-do it. The second time I went back to her, I just told her to cut my hair and I would put it in a bun and do it myself when I leave. She suggested that I bring my products next time and show her how I do it...that was a great idea, but I never went back...I just let my hair grow out.
That makes a lot of sense, I hadn't seen that in my research so thank you enlightening me! 😄 I may try that if I ever revisit a non-AA salon in the future. I'm glad you had a generally good experience!
I feel your pain, I went for a Deva cut and I don't think I will ever do it again. I felt like a freak show. They never saw curly hair like mine. That is the way it is every where I go :(
Lisa Shaffer I'm sorry that that happened to you 😒 Just know that whether or not people understand your features, you are still beautiful and one of a kind❤️
Ive had multiple Deva cuts all over the country including Louisiana where I live, Miami, San Francisco and at the Devachan salon in NYC. Everybody had their own way of doing it. Many of the stylists don’t do curl by curl on our hair because usually black curls are tighter and denser. It probably just takes too long to go curl by curl. Despite the various methods, I got pretty much the same shape/cut that I went for. Some of the white stylist I went to told me that when they train, usually they don’t have tight curls to practice on. They can still get fully certified without ever touching tight curls. I had a similar experience to you including the pulling/yanking in San Francisco and the stylist was black! Thanks for sharing your experience.
Aww :'( I am sooo sorry to hear this :(! The crazy thing is that most stylist including black stylists have ALSO RIPPED my fine hair strands out. That is why I NEVER GO TO THE SALON EVER. Like you said, you grew your hair for 7 years successfully. My hair is now at its longest length in my life strictly because I have completely cut out ever going to "the professionals" (who always ruined my hair) and took care of it all by myself for the past 6 years. They just don't know how to do my hair! Even the "natural hair specialists" cut so much hair off and then talk down to you:( Thanks for sharing you story! NEVER GO BACK!!!
For some reason I really don't trust this whole deva cut thing. It doesn't make any sense to me. Like idk about other curly girls out there but when I wash my hair and do a wash and go the curls are always "different." And what I mean by different is that depending on the product i used that day the curls could be tighter, looser, shorter, longer, what have you so i don't understand the whole cutting the curls one by one. i feel like by the time I go to wash my hair again after the cut, the cut would not even resemble itself. Idk if that makes sense or not. And also, most of the videos I watch about deva cuts a lot of the women hate it. And also I get my hair cut the normal way and I never have any problems or dislike it, so what are the benefits of a deva cut? Anywho, I would love to see what the cut looks like after you rewash it or even straighten it.
I got a DevaCut with all the DevaCurl products and I have not been able to replicate it. My hair does not look like it did when I left the salon and I don't like it....
It may be different for everyone but I find that the cut falls pretty much the same every time I do a wash and go. I like that my hair has "personality" because of the layers instead of it all just being one layer. With that being said though prior to this I cut my hair straight for almost seven years and never had a problem with that except the heat damage I could possibly get. The DevaCut is definitely not for everyone but for the people who do not want to straighten their hair, I can see where it could be useful.
I'm glad you shared this. I live around the corner from this salon and I have contemplated going there for a while. I think I will continue getting my hair trimmed by my stylist. Thanks for sharing!
Wow, thanks for this post! Two things really struck out to me, when they touched your hair and when she said you'd be back when those knots come back. That is so rude! So, I have only been "natural" for three months but I have been blowdrying and flat ironing my hair since I was 13 and I am 40 now. I follow a girl on IG who has amazing hair and goes to a stylist about a half hour from me. I live in Philly but there aren't any in Philly, just a few in the surrounding areas. I looked up reviews and pictures and all that good stuff. I even called and spoke to her for a while and asked, kindly, if she is used to ethnic hair and she said yes. I went this past Friday and I am not happy at all. I knew that this cut is not for the faint of heart. I knew that it would be uneven straight. I could deal with that. But what I was not prepared for was that she basically just cut, and cut, and cut. Yes, my curls are defined and look really nice, but I have no style or shape. It's been a few days now and I have not found a way to have it sit right so I have been putting it in a loose bun. I am so disappointed because, with tip, it cost me $120. I can only hope it grows fast so that it starts to grow in. She just kept saying that she's cutting a lot but that I won't need a cut for a long time. I specifically told her that I wanted to keep my length and that even though volume looks great on some gals, I don't necessarily like it on me. A little length yes, but that's it. Anyway, this has turned into a long post, sorry! LOL
Im so sorry to hear that 😓😓 It is great that your hair is so healthy but that doesn't really do you much good if you don't like the shape.. At least as your hair grows out it will continue to be super healthy and the shape will get better and better with time!
I had the same experience with Kathy at Rudy & Kelly and until finding your video was about to set another appointment with hopes she would do a better job. She definitely does not do the deva cut method, and I was just as confused as you. I also asked her to cut a bang in the front and she said no because "she" doesn't think it looks good on people that way. So thank you for posting this video, I will not be going there again!
Oh wow!! What a coincidence.. I am glad that you came across my video and thank you for commenting lol. What are you going to do the next time you want a hair cut??
I had the EXACT same experience when I got the Deva Cut. I did my research by checking their website, Facebook, Instagram, etc. When I got there the Deva certified stylist seemed to get lost in my hair, although she informed me that she had experience with all hair textures. Unlike you, i was not impressed with the style or shape that she left my hair in. I can say that I really like the shape and final look of your hair but I find it unacceptable for a stylist to be so rough with your hair that you were left with your scalp hurting. I wish that more African American natural hair stylists would invest the time and money to get Deva certified since they will naturally have a better understanding of our hair types.
I'm really sorry that that happened 🙁 I have been doing more research on curly hair cuts and there are some seemingly respected hair stylists who can handle tightly coiled hair and have tightly coiled hair themselves.. But they do not train under the Deva Method. I have been looking into that route lately and maybe that could help you too.
It's very pretty but it looks like it is visibly longer on one side. I also think Deva Cut isn't great for ppl who have less obvious curls, no curls, or an inconsistent curl pattern. YMMV, but even though I go to a Deva Salon sometimes, I never let them cut my hair dry b/c my afro-hair looks wildly different from day to day, and is much straighter on top, and honestly, I don't usually have ind'l curls visible if my hair is dry (b/c of how I style it).
I had a similar experience when I got my hair straightened. The lady ripped through my hair and it broke off. And I had heat damage at the root. I will never do that again. My hair tangles in the same manner. I have to pulls he knots down. So sorry about your experience. I hope you have a better experience in a different salon.
Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that. I actually received heat damage at the root of my hair from straightening it last December too. After that experiencing I don't plan on straightening my hair any time soon. And it's comforting to know that the way my hair tangles isn't just central to me, I haven't met someone who has the same experience with their hair :) Thank you so much for your kind words and thank you for watching!
You know, I wonder about reviews a lot of the time. I personally negatively reviewed a conditioner that had all 5 stars on their website. Its been weeks and my review is still not up on their site. I think a lot of places don't put up negative reviews unfortunately. Your hair looks beautiful though. You are beautiful as well. :)
Wow, I was considering going to this same salon since it's like the only one I've seen for Deva cuts around here. I saw a lot of reviews on NaturallyCurly that made it seem like they worked with all textures. So glad I saw this review first.
You see that's why I stick to a good barber, because they are more specialized in cutting hair then a beautician. Lots of beauticians are not talented in cutting hair. I go to my mother's barber and he cuts my hair just like I wants it....
My hair is past shoulder length like near armpit length. It was bra strap length, before I dyed my hair blonde with clariol textures and tones. An I thought, because it said it had no ammonia that it would be fine, well I lied to myself and had to literally give myself a nape cut, because it broke off my nape, but ever since I have been going to the barber once in awhile and keeping my hair braided, my hair is growing so fast, even the barber is asking me on what I'm doing with my hair to grow so fast like this, because he just cut it 3 weeks ago lol. Then he says, that I don't have no dandruff or nothing like that. I said I stick to my natural remedies that I make with my blender and my steamer plus put a plastic bag on my head and called it a day. But the barber he has been cutting for years, so I stick to him and my hair grows back in no time a little bit too fast to be exact, because it doesn't allow me to enjoy my nape cut design, but oh well time for another cut lol.
Since 2011 when I cut off all my hair and went natural, I have been doing my on hair. But when I did a length check I did go to salon. And the girl she was nice by showing me how much she was going to trim off and I liked that most.
I live in the 757 and I'm sooo happy you did a review on this salon! I've been looking into getting a devacut in the area and I defiantly wont be going to their salon for it!
I'm so sorry u had to go thru that... I've gone thru a similar experience & told myself I would NEVER put myself thru that torture again. What she did is completely unacceptable and U should report her. Don't let it go, girl.
That's horrible what you went through. The Deva Stylist I went to at the closest stylist in my State and she did a great job. She was very nice. In fact she recommended for me to come back in 6 months. I also researched my Stylist before I went in. I saw 2 other people TH-cam videos of their Deva Cuts before I made an appointment with her. My price was $160. She knew what she was doing. I love my Cut and my Stylist.
PowerInYourCurl I don't plan on doing that. She's so good that when I was there for my appointment another lady flew in from another state just to have her style her hair! I hope you find a good one. Don't let that one deter you from going to another Deva Stylist. Your hair is really pretty though...
Thankfully your hair looks good. Unfortunately one bad stylist session can cause damage that takes months to rectify. Glad it worked out for you. I do my own hair. I feel the risks outweigh the benefits for me.
Wow! Sorry you experienced this. Your hair type (fine, tangles easily, curl pattern) sounds exactly like my hair. I've been wanting a Deva Cut for years...but I'm cautious because of stylist that try to force their opinions on me. Your hair looks beautiful. Now I'm gong to check out your wash and go routine! :)
Aww thank you so much!! Your hair is beautiful as well! And I understand what you mean about pushy stylists, but if you do decide to get one I hope you have a great experience!
Your cut came out beautifully. But I agree with you. I wouldn't go back either. I think some people forget the customer deserves to get what they want when they're paying. You were very kind in giving her a tip...
Thank you! Yeah I think you're right about that.. And I considered not tipping lol but I have a lot of hair that she had to maneuver through so I just gave her a little extra.
Look into Feye's self-trimming method (can be found online on livejournal) and the compact cuts for cutting hair (in the "Haircutting for dummies" book). They are awesome methods, known at the longhaircommunity! And they work!
Your hair looks great! I agree with most of what you said. I do not rake product through hair (except conditioner on thoroughly detangled super curly hair) and smooth it through to to clump and elongate curls. However you should not cut/trim your own hair. A Deva Cut was developed to maintain shape as hair grows out. Fairy knots and frayed ends are ok. Trims actually aren't necessary so frequently especially on WNG wearers. If you still have damage seek a curly hair specialist (look through Curly Hair Artistry) that does Olaplex treatments. 6-8 months for your next cut is correct.. I am a Natural & Curly Hair Specialist and Advanced Deva Stylist. I highly recommend looking for a Curly Hair Artist in your area.
+msplenty1979 ... They are ok to trim on your own.

Im glad you did this video!👍that stylist isn't going to last long. They think you don't know what you're talking about, but you know your hair and you know more than her about diva cuts obviously.
I got a devacut as out a week ago as well and my hair was not cut curl by curl either. She did take sections at first but went back through and cut individual curls that were out of the shape I wanted. The cut went very well but then the wash and styling was absolutely horrible. A younger girl who I don't think had much knowledge on tighter curls worked with my hair. She raked through my hair as well and there is a section of my hair where the curls are much tighter and a bit harder to work with, unless you have this type of hair. I usually smooth the product into that area as well and it needs to be very wet and have extra product. I told the girl that that portion of my hair was very frizzy after she washed me and I was not happy with it. she continued to try and put finger coils and further seperate my hair, so I was so annoyed that she didn't know how to do my hair. I felt like for an expensive haircut the person working with my hair should know how to style it properly. After I was done drying the stylist came over to check on my hair and I told her I was unhappy with the top portion because t was very frizzy and she was like well you have very dry hair, and asked if I wanted to rewet my hair and just leave with wet hair. So I ended up doing that, but my curls on the top were still frizzy and undefined :/ I do love the cut I just wish I wouldn't have gotten it styled and washed by them.
Wow, that is so annoying, I'm over here mad for you! I can't believe she suggested you leave with wet hair because she did not know how to style it properly. Maybe one day I'll open a salon that understands and is patient with the beautiful complexities that tighter curls have. ❤️ I'm really sorry you had to experience that :(
You really should have spoken up... No one else will defend what you want for Your hair in that chair. You are the boss and you call the shots. If you don't, how is she to know you don't want that? It looks nice and I'm glad for you that you like it. Bad cuts are the Worst! So glad it didn't turn out disappointing to you.
The curl by curl method is taught in the devacurl salon but I think Lorraine is the only person who follows it too the dot, my devastylist did mine in sections but she didn't comb it with her fingers until she put conditioner on it
I just got a trim on my curly hair but after she was done cuting it i could'nt even tell i got a hair cut.. My layers are supposed to be long but they are so long that it looks the same as before and i went in to get the cut, i wanted to angle the front towards my face since my hair there is more wavy but i did'nt get that either, 18 bucks for a haircut that looked the same as before, hell i had that for free... Most stylist can cut at all i swear!
Waited in anticipation for my first NYC Devachan cut and I was very disappointed. My experience was similar to yours in terms of the red flags raised by the technique used (mostly conflicted with the curly girl book). A week later, I asked for a refund and am heading to my original stylist to fix the very uneven cut!
while damaged ends does cause tangles, you don't rake through it. Like that makes it worse. I wonder how these people get certified for Deva cutting. This is sad. These stories make me scared to go to any salon. Right now my hair is too short but i dont even wanna go when it grows out.
You're exactly right, and she was just damaging the ends even further by raking through them. I understand being afraid to trust a stylist with your hair so maybe you could schedule a consultation with them beforehand and while you're there try to observe how she handles other clients' hair. It's not foolproof, but it could help you decide whether you want her working with your hair 😊
PowerInYourCurl Very true. I am very discriminatory when it comes to salons. Hair is hair but i don't want anyone being foolish with mine. Typically I look or mixed people or people with mixed kids. Usually they know how to deal with my complicated hair because they deal with it a lot. But I havent been in years.
I have done it both ways in the past, and I can say that I now prefer trimming it curly. Straightening my hair for a trim is just too damaging in the long run. And you're welcome!
Honestly.... I went to the DevaCurl academy and that's how they show you to do it. Separate with scissors! I don't do it cause I think it can be dangerous, but that's the process you learn. They also tell you to "break" those 3 curls so yea.... She actually is very good and learned it the right way !! And as a curly hairstylist myself, yes, people should trim their hair every 3 months....And she gave you a bomb ass cut ;) !
I have a question, why tip her if she did cut ur hair correctly nor did she listen to you regarding detangling and had a smart comment about the knots?
Because I'm probably too nice lol. But seriously though, I really like my cut and I usually make it a point to tip people who provide me with a service so I honestly just tipped her out of habit.
for the first time in my life i got a good cut, and it was at a toni and guy hair school i paid $10 and i specified, i wanted someone who had curly hair to cut my hair, they sent me back and the only mixed girl there was and she cut it amazing, she knew what she was doing and was receptive to learning tips or what i wanted done because she was there to learn. in the end we just talked about how shitty it is how there isn't very much cultural diversity in the town we're living in rn because i'm from Portland, i'm used to cultural diversity, i'm used to different foods. i'm never personally ever letting a straight hair curl cut my hair again.
this is why you are supposed to communicate with your stylist. you supposed to show them exactly how much you want them to cut and how you want to cut your hair. the best thing to do is show a picture or video so they can see exactly what you are talking about. the other misconception is that if a stylist hair looks good then the stylist knows how to do hair any stylist can easily sit down at another stylist chair and get their hair done especially when they work together. To prevent mishaps like this you are supposed to research the stylist, salon as well find people in your area that has been to this specific salon and or stylist. it is your responsibility to thoroughly communicate with the status exactly what you want by both Visual and verbal communication. for example the same way that she was showing us how she had some scraggly ends she was supposed to show The Stylist depart she want it cut the same exact way she showed us on this video
im sorry girl lol. it sounds racist as hell but i trust no person not of color to come close to my hair. i wont even consider it. you can learn about different hair types all day long but if you're not walking the walk you can not perform to me. i have too much bad experience with that
exactly I have a biracial daughter we live in a predominantly white town when I got my last haircut I had a great experience started asking her about my daughters hair at least this stylist was honest in saying the salon hasn't really worked with my daughters hair type and wasn't comfortable in attempting it she also said i hope this doesnt sound racist but this stylist is black so shes probably more familiar with your daughters hair type i couldnt help but laugh and agree with her suggested a stylist a couple towns over
I am white with very thick curly hair and i have not found one white stylist that knows what the hell they are doing, i have had so many bad hair cuts.. And when they style it, Lol omg it's a joke, the first thing they do is grab a brush and i know then that it's going to be a disaster, they spray so much hair spray that my head comes out lookin like a stiff birds nest, it's rediculous...
Kelly Anderson I feel you girl. The last time I tried to color my hair at a salon basically my ends were a different color from my roots bc the hairstylist didn't consider I had curly hair... Besides that, she blow dried my hair and ran her hands through my dry hair to "style it" and I don't even wanna talk about the haircut.... To be honest since I'm caucasian, well sort of since I'm portuguese, I just feel it might be inappropriate or I might be out of place in salon that wasn't meant for me. I don't know maybe I'm just overthinking.
I can't let no one touch my hair, play in it, style it unless they ask. I've had to many people in high school who have proceeded to comb their fingers through my hair and take the curls out and then ask why did it get like that. I've had to hold back too many backhanded slaps 😂😂
Aghh this happened to me, i was trying to lighten some red in my hair and she bleached it three times in one sitting while complaining about my hair quality being so poor, and brushing it so roughly i could see the ripped hair floating around. Another customer actually complained because it was clear i was in so much pain. Pretty ashamed i didnt just leave but i had the bleach in my hair :( sorry you had to go through something similar, worst feeling when you have to sit there knowing you'll hate it, and then pay for it too.
That sounded horrible. My DevaCut lady was awesome. There was absolutely NO raking at all. The detangling was in really small sections and very gentle. She curl by curl cut my hair and it took more than one session to get all the heat damage out without cutting all my hair off but the last session she said all the heat damage was gone I could start to grow it out and to come back in 6 months. You're lady sounded completely opposite and that's really disappointing.
I noticed you went to a location in VA , but there are also some really nice salons in DC that specialize in curly hair if you're willing to travel out there
I had the same experience. I was wondering whether anyone else felt like this. I stay is South Africa and theres only one deva curl stylist. My scalp was burning from all the tugging and she even burnt it with hot water. I told her to stop but she tried putting on the hot towel again! The same method was used (cutting pieces of hair), I do feel tho that my is "uneven" and prone to breakage easier. Still have fairy knots too 😕
Thank you so much for your review! I will NOT be going to that salon 💇🏽 I live in the area that you got your hair cut and I’m currently looking for a place to get a Deva Cut or just a cut that I can get that doesn’t require me to blow out or straighten my hair. I did however find a salon called Muse and i called them and they sound legit but I’m going to do more research
PowerInYourCurl this is what makes me terrified to get my hair cut. it's very curly and down to the middle of my back like past my bra strap, and I'm really wanting to get it cut kind of short. So that I can have lots of volume and poof on top! but I'm so afraid it'll get jacked up and then I can't even throw it in a bun LOL
Yaaaas, im right there with riping through the hair. I literally did a quick wash and go for the cut and when i left i had a fro because the poor girl couldnt work with my hair. And there's no waaay she didn't notice my hair had less definition leaving than when i came in
ladies if you can do your hair yourself just do it!
Dry combing curly hair especially tight curls holy crap that makes me cringe!
Karlee Craziness right i can hear snapping from the comb
My hairdresser always tells me I should come in every 4 weeks for a trim.... sure, Jan. 😂
It's unnecessary and I don't have that kind of money.
"sure Jan" 😂
As a stylist and someone who has had the devacut they do NOT rack the hair. Also long layer isn't a devacut, devacut is usually at a 90 degree angle. Sorry for your experience always run when they say they never seen your hair texture. It upsets me when stylist do this!!!
Thanks for the advice!
Blessed Natural long layered isn't a devacut but it's great to have the option. I don't like deep layers but I do like the idea of trimming individual curls dry
Fine Natural Hair and Faith that's what I said...
Umm I was agreeing with you and just adding that I like the option
I hope you reported her to the DevaCurl company. She clearly hasn't done hair like yours.
This salon isn't owned by Devacurl, they have stylists come to their school, learn some things like the devacut and then they go back to their salon as a devacertified stylist. I recommend that ladies just try to go to Devacurl the salon (Devachan)
and you can always call Devacurl and report that stylist.
Patricia Josephine Thank you sharing Patricia!
"you'll be back when those knots come back." wtf?
I would've said ''I'll be coming back never if you treat me like that''
ugh thats annoying.
Thank you for your advice Dante! I really appreciate it ☺️
You are far more tactful and patient than I would've been.
89jesusisking lol you should've seen my face when she was doing it 😂
One if my biggest pet peeve is when people literally "pet" my hair without asking 🙄
Yes, it's just awkward..
Bianca Beton yes iv had ppl tell me omg where did u get ur hair...um excuse me ...my mother ! i was born with this...or ppl say omg ur hairs so nice bt u look blk...yes im mixd bt my hairs thick ppl always try to pet my hair its annoying to be othrs fascination
jasmine ervin that's sad, as if black women cant have nice long hair. Yet we can
HairByPierre. yes im Mexican cheroke 2 other native american scottish and black my hairs wavey and curly and thick bt straightens bone straight and silky...i was at hair store w my bestie buying her weave hair and some random lady came up to me and was like excuse me which hair are u wearing...iwas like this is my real hair shes like oh wow can i touch it ...smh
jasmine ervin yea African Americans are a mix of Native American, African, and European.
Did she check the angle when she was cutting?
yep, it definitely looks uneven to me. That was the first thing I noticed.
Exactly what I noticed, too. That would really bug me.
This is exactly why im scared to go to any hair salon its like some hairstylist are so careless and get an attitude when you correct them. How are you going to try and tell someone about whats growing out of their head?
Exactly!!
Perhaps the stylist thought Deva meant "Diva" lol
+UKNA 😄 perhaps!
I can imagine the fascination on your roommates faces too! Lol Thank you girl!
Report her! Next time get up and walk out 😩🙄 Trust me you won't regret it lol
Lol, have you ever walked out of a salon?
+PowerInYourCurl I've never had to lol I'm a licensed cosmetologist so I always communicate and take control of my appointments. But I know it can be intimidating if you're not a hairstylist but just remember it's your hair; and if she's doing something that's hurting you or causing you any type of distress you need to let her know. I'm sorry you had that experience but I'm glad you like your hair, just communicate better next time or end the appointment.
Thank you for the advice!
Wow, encouraging someone to steal... classy
@@MISSPHOTOGENICBABY are you scolding this lady?
I do my own hair, because I have trust issues with some of these so called stylist. BUT! If I decided to go to one, I'd be sure to speak up, and wouldn't hesitate walking out either. I give 0 fawks about a stylist and how she might feel about it either.
Maybe I'm trippin, but the left side of your hair is longer than the right....
I noticed that too. The shape looks much better though.
I didn't even realize that until y'all said something but I think it is a little uneven, lol.
omg when stylists rake through my hair with a small rat tail comb top to bottom or combing when its dry literally makes have anxiety so badly. i hate feeling like my hair is getting ripped it makes me just wanna scream!!!! i havent been to the salon in 3 years because of this and this method seems so interesting but im so afraid. sorry you had that experience your hair does look amazing though!
Thank you!
She did a friends hair exactly as described
I think your hair looks pretty good in Spite of the bad techniques
Ooo, I hope you have a much better experience than me. I can't wait to see how your hair turns out! And thank you.
Fine Natural Hair and Faith if possible pls vlog the deva cut :)
radioactive ood I always feel weird asking if it's ok lol but I will make the attempt
Fine Natural Hair and Faith sure.. np... coz i dono why watching deva cut these days is soothing for me :P..
coz i had gotten on in aug n nvr felt better :P
Where in NYC, if you don't mind me asking? I live in CT and am looking for a good natural hair stylist. Thanks!
Listening to this is so cringy. I'm so sorry you dealt with this. I definitely wouldn't go back to that salon.
This is literally every experience I’ve ever had at every salon. Especially the detangling process.
Thanks for the review. I would never go back to that woman. all of the things you told her about your particular hair and she just discarded it as nothing. that shows that she has no respect for her clients.
Agreed.
This is why i dont trust anyone with trimming my hair
marquez brown Boom! 👊🖤
Absolutely!! I NEVER let people trim my hair!!! EVER!!☝
See this is why I will never go to a salon for a haircut. I don't believe that deva cuts were created with our hair in mind. Your hair turned out very beautiful though! :)
Thank you! And honestly, I can understand why you would think that lol. How do you cut your hair since you don't get it done at a salon?
Thank you for responding! I'm old school. I cowash my hair and then use a detangling product (homemade flaxseed and marshmallow root gel) and then I part my hair the way I want it to fall, twist it in small twists and cut. This has worked for me. It may not be the way that a lot of people feel comfortable with but it has surely worked for me.
+Skye Blue of course! ☺️ and I have actually heard of a lot of people having success using that method to cut their so I just may try it next! Thank you for the advice 😁
I am so sorry that all of these horrible things happened to you. Your experience makes me want to cry. No one deserves terrible service.
Oh wow! That's crazy! There are definitely some unreliable stylists out there 😐 I'm sorry that happened to you.
Well, I finally found a stylist who was more about her money/business than her ego, and I have sent numerous people to her.
wow, girl...
+lanel 2904 that makes a lot of sense. I trim in twists but never thought to cut my hair in twists. Thanks for the suggestion 😊
Whats the name of this joint!!!?? so no others make the same mistake..better go YELP on this here youtube.
PowerInYourCurl thank you, I do love my hair. I just live in an area where there arent as many curly girls. Thank God for youtube
Lisa Shaffer Exactly! And Instagram.
She just wanted money that why she wanted you to come back every 3 months
I'm glad you shared this. I live around the corner from this salon and I have contemplated going there for a while. I think I will continue getting my hair trimmed by my stylist. Thanks for sharing!
No problem Brittany! Thanks for watching 😊
My hair tangles just how you described and I have verb detangling it properly 😩😩 glad I watched your video because wash day is tomorrow
Same here! 😫
I agree that the deva cut is probably best suited super curly hair. Your hair sounds beautiful though, lol. Thanks for watching!
+Gravincas Aww thank you so much and you may be on to something!
Wow, I was considering going to this same salon since it's like the only one I've seen for Deva cuts around here. I saw a lot of reviews on NaturallyCurly that made it seem like they worked with all textures. So glad I saw this review first.
BlountedReality me too! If you really want the devacut I have heard there are some experienced stylists near DC.
You see that's why I stick to a good barber, because they are more specialized in cutting hair then a beautician. Lots of beauticians are not talented in cutting hair. I go to my mother's barber and he cuts my hair just like I wants it....
How long is your hair?
But the barber he has been cutting for years, so I stick to him and my hair grows back in no time a little bit too fast to be exact, because it doesn't allow me to enjoy my nape cut design, but oh well time for another cut lol.
that actually sounds like a great idea.
Since 2011 when I cut off all my hair and went natural, I have been doing my on hair. But when I did a length check I did go to salon. And the girl she was nice by showing me how much she was going to trim off and I liked that most.
I love when stylists do that as well 😊
I hate when people touch my hair with our asking .Even if you don't ask, I will say no. I not an animal I don't want you to play in and pet my hair .
+KodakCurlss exactly!
True
I live in the 757 and I'm sooo happy you did a review on this salon! I've been looking into getting a devacut in the area and I defiantly wont be going to their salon for it!
Bri Coins I am happy I could help Bri!
that's crazy because that's the place I was thinking about going to....well I won't be visiting that place
+Samantha Ivy I'm glad your experience was so great! Don't ever let that stylist go! Lol
PowerInYourCurl I don't plan on doing that. She's so good that when I was there for my appointment another lady flew in from another state just to have her style her hair! I hope you find a good one. Don't let that one deter you from going to another Deva Stylist. Your hair is really pretty though...
thank you for sharing your experience! it was very helpful. your hair is beautiful!
Thank you Sondra!
Thankfully your hair looks good. Unfortunately one bad stylist session can cause damage that takes months to rectify. Glad it worked out for you. I do my own hair. I feel the risks outweigh the benefits for me.
QueenBee1118 I think that it's great that you do your own hair! That way you don't have to rely on anyone else 😉
PowerInYourCurl Thanks
I got tons of bad advise and a bad cut at a Devachan salon as well, and I too didn't speak up when I should have. Never, ever agaib.
I feel you.
I will not be getting a Deva cut.. Eva!... 😨
RandomNest I don't think you should judge the cut based on one bad stylist :)
Your hair looks absolutely amazing!!!
Thank you!!
Your natural curls are so pretty even without any product. I am only 2b/c so I have some curl envy going on.
Look into Feye's self-trimming method (can be found online on livejournal) and the compact cuts for cutting hair (in the "Haircutting for dummies" book). They are awesome methods, known at the longhaircommunity! And they work!
Yay!! Thank you for the suggestions! I will look into those methods.
That's why I prefer to do my own hair. Hair stylist do not know everyone's hair.
I appreciate your advice 😊 Thanks for watching!
I hear you 100% and I definitely learned that lesson! Thanks for watching ☺️
The curl by curl method is taught in the devacurl salon but I think Lorraine is the only person who follows it too the dot, my devastylist did mine in sections but she didn't comb it with her fingers until she put conditioner on it
Glad i found this. I just had this same experience 2 days ago. Sadly i dont like mine and I paid more. :( i def wont go back, lesson learned.
amber amen to a lesson learned smh. I'm sorry that happened to you
I just got a trim on my curly hair but after she was done cuting it i could'nt even tell i got a hair cut..
I'm glad you got everything worked out!
while damaged ends does cause tangles, you don't rake through it.
PowerInYourCurl
Very true. I am very discriminatory when it comes to salons. Hair is hair but i don't want anyone being foolish with mine. Typically I look or mixed people or people with mixed kids. Usually they know how to deal with my complicated hair because they deal with it a lot. But I havent been in years.
Yeah I know what you mean. Salons aren't always a curly girl's friend :/
thankyou for your devacut experience, when you trim your hair every 3 months and 6 months do you cut it curly or straight
I have done it both ways in the past, and I can say that I now prefer trimming it curly. Straightening my hair for a trim is just too damaging in the long run. And you're welcome!
Thanks for the review, because I was planning to go to that exact salon.
Oh nooo! I was really getting ready to book an appointment there a minute ago! I guess not anymore lmao
Dang that sucks!!! I might just try to DIY my Deva Cut.
it's a consistency that I've notice with curly hair cuts. people like the cut but don't like the detangling or the style
Oh wow! And another thing we have in common was the location! Man yal must be in the Navy!!!! 😊😊👌🏾
I have a question, why tip her if she did cut ur hair correctly nor did she listen to you regarding detangling and had a smart comment about the knots?
Because I'm probably too nice lol. But seriously though, I really like my cut and I usually make it a point to tip people who provide me with a service so I honestly just tipped her out of habit.
red flags... time to move your money to someone else
for the first time in my life i got a good cut, and it was at a toni and guy hair school i paid $10 and i specified, i wanted someone who had curly hair to cut my hair, they sent me back and the only mixed girl there was and she cut it amazing, she knew what she was doing and was receptive to learning tips or what i wanted done because she was there to learn. in the end we just talked about how shitty it is how there isn't very much cultural diversity in the town we're living in rn because i'm from Portland, i'm used to cultural diversity, i'm used to different foods. i'm never personally ever letting a straight hair curl cut my hair again.
this is why you are supposed to communicate with your stylist. you supposed to show them exactly how much you want them to cut and how you want to cut your hair. the best thing to do is show a picture or video so they can see exactly what you are talking about.
the other misconception is that if a stylist hair looks good then the stylist knows how to do hair any stylist can easily sit down at another stylist chair and get their hair done especially when they work together. To prevent mishaps like this you are supposed to research the stylist, salon as well find people in your area that has been to this specific salon and or stylist. it is your responsibility to thoroughly communicate with the status exactly what you want by both Visual and verbal communication. for example the same way that she was showing us how she had some scraggly ends she was supposed to show The Stylist depart she want it cut the same exact way she showed us on this video
im sorry girl lol. it sounds racist as hell but i trust no person not of color to come close to my hair. i wont even consider it. you can learn about different hair types all day long but if you're not walking the walk you can not perform to me. i have too much bad experience with that
Kiera D. I feel you, I feel you. Especially if you have fine, curly hair.
exactly I have a biracial daughter we live in a predominantly white town when I got my last haircut I had a great experience started asking her about my daughters hair at least this stylist was honest in saying the salon hasn't really worked with my daughters hair type and wasn't comfortable in attempting it she also said i hope this doesnt sound racist but this stylist is black so shes probably more familiar with your daughters hair type i couldnt help but laugh and agree with her suggested a stylist a couple towns over
Kiera D. with all the poc out here fucking up on our hair too, it really does.
This cut is everything!
+Sydney Jordan thanks!
I can't let no one touch my hair, play in it, style it unless they ask. I've had to many people in high school who have proceeded to comb their fingers through my hair and take the curls out and then ask why did it get like that. I've had to hold back too many backhanded slaps 😂😂
Casual 😂😂
Very nice hair!! I love your style, could you please make some tutorials directed at men. I think I either have 4B/4c hair
Girl I would have jumped out of that chair so fast. She was breaking every curly girl rule!!!
Sorry u had to go through that😔 but WOW look at your BEAUTIFUL Hair Now!!!🙏😊🌹
Aghh this happened to me, i was trying to lighten some red in my hair and she bleached it three times in one sitting while complaining about my hair quality being so poor, and brushing it so roughly i could see the ripped hair floating around.
I am so glad you had such an amazing experience though! Girl you better keep that stylist close, lol.
I noticed you went to a location in VA , but there are also some really nice salons in DC that specialize in curly hair if you're willing to travel out there
I have heard that! Have you ever tried any?
Hi. I moved to northern VA 6 months ago. Can you recommend a salon in the DMV?
Always go with your gut instinct the moment you felt like something was wrong is the moment that you stop what's happening
Trust me, I learned that lesson real good that day lol.
PowerInYourCurl LOL I bet you did!!
PowerInYourCurl this is what makes me terrified to get my hair cut. it's very curly and down to the middle of my back like past my bra strap, and I'm really wanting to get it cut kind of short. So that I can have lots of volume and poof on top! but I'm so afraid it'll get jacked up and then I can't even throw it in a bun LOL
sucks you had a bad experience, I'm going to this salon soon because it's in my area. hope my experience is ok!
I hope your experience is better than mine! Let me know how it goes 😊
Yaaaas, im right there with riping through the hair. I literally did a quick wash and go for the cut and when i left i had a fro because the poor girl couldnt work with my hair. And there's no waaay she didn't notice my hair had less definition leaving than when i came in
