This is one of the best Atari 2600 driving games. The snow, night, and fog scenes were breathtaking for their time. The night scene with fog is really hard.
Not if you have child brain, I was great in this game and Kaboom another Activision classic, last time I bought these games, I didn't know i suck dat bad. Makes you wonder why parents get arrested for 14 years old criminal.

As far they were conserned games were a fad and opportunity to make mad cash I wouldn't say the actual blame lies with developers, never has. Investors with demands and CEO's with a boner for money stiffles the creativity of very talented people. These people who own the publishing companies have money in the billions and with no other goal than to earn more, aquire competitors to have monopoly in their field.
Activision is also bad for many for other reasons: a lawsuit against Atari in the early 1980s for revealing an Atari 2600 trade secret that helped Atari be the sole publisher of games, closure, obscurity or sale of some studios and brands (including Radical and Sierra), transfer of Vicarious Visions to Blizzard (a corporate sibling), franchises dating back to the Atari 2600 or the days of European computers have been closed (eg Pitfall) or sold (eg Shanghai franchise sold to Sunsoft), harassment trial relating to Toys For Bob, Blizzard, in addition to Activision.
The fog and snow, that was spot on, and also the tail lights of the rival cars at night, that is just incredible, I remember playing this all night long, we are 4 brothers and when the game was over I had to wait for so long to play it again, damn.

From a time when you couldn't pause a game, you couldn't save a game, all you could do was try to roll the score counter. Enduro was/is brilliant. Scaling cars, depth perception, visibility and weather changes, physics, timing .. a serious challenge to pass the required cars, that looks simple enough at the start, but gets seriously harder with each passing 'day'. When the game came out, the instructions included a challenge, where if the gamer got to the 5th day or beyond, to take a photo of their TV screen, and mail in the picture to Activision, who would in turn, mail you an Activision "Roadbusters" sew on patch. Definitely a cooler time for a company that's only known for the likes of COD and Guitar Hero etc. these days!
Cool story man, I am with you all the way until you start to declare one time “cooler” than another for Activision. COD and Guitar Hero are obviously legendary games. So to diminish one time period in order to boost another, even in jest, is the wrong idea.

Hands down my favorite Atari 2600 game, used to crank up the sound on the old TV and loved revving up the "engine." The console was my son's, and he used to have to push me away so he could play. I loved Enduro the best, with Pole Position being another good driving game. Pit Fall was also one of my all time favorites. The Atari is still working just fine as well as most of the old games. After coming across this video today, makes me want to get out the Atari and Enduro and have some play time this afternoon.
Hey 👋🏽 you weren't the only one and that came from my Atari 2600 console with the faux wood which I still have since 1988, cause my parents bought the game connector at Zayre that same year. Now my two years younger cousin been wanting to lay it again since 1987 female cousin gotten the updated Atari with the silver design for Christmas.

I remember being about 4 years old, my brothers were 10 and 11, and we went to a neighbor's house to play this game. In their basement they had a massive home theater screen that was about the equivalent of a 60 inch television and a projector that they were somehow able to link up with their Atari 2600. Suffice it to say, I was too young to play the game as well as my brothers and the neighbor's kids, but boy was it an experience to see this game on a large screen with the volume of that revving engine blaring away through those big speakers. Amazing memories.
Super late to this comment, but I think it’s really interesting that you used “anxiety” to describe how the game made you feel; Mostly because I think that’s what makes it stand the test of time. Personally, I’d also use the word “atmospheric” to describe this game; The lack of any in-game music - combined with the sound effects and the day/night cycle - really helps to draw you into the game.
I used to capitalize on a trick right from the start: Begin the game at a slow speed, let a few cars pass, then speed up to pass them back. The car counter never goes above 200 on the initial day (or 300 on subsequent days) so you could quickly have those cars count toward your total.
When did you all play this? I was 10-11 yrs old in 1986/87 . I had a blast playing this with my dad, he was good at it too lol. He was 34 yrs old then 😁. I just showed him this clip and he said " wow haven't played that in a long time" He turned 70 in March. Damn how time flies. Gonna get me another Atari 2600 😁👍
Quite probably the BEST racing game for the old 2600! Holds up amazingly well after OVER 32 years! AMAZING staying power due to superior game-play and variations.

Got my first Atari 2600 (clone) in the early 2000's and played the shit out of this game, it's just a good fun racing game that you can keep improving at because of the potentially crazy high speed!

Yeah this game is so tripped out. Played this so much when I was 4 and it reminded me of tv static, the sound and look of it so that a had a weird habit of whenever snow/static would come on the tv I'd point at it and go "look! Racing cars! Racing cars!" And jump up and down and get all excited. I was one unique kid. :D

Two mistakes being made in this gameplay (He used save states, so he could correct as needed): (1) Reckless speed. You don't need to pass them anywhere near as fast as you are. (2) When you pass the required number of cars, slow down, and find an easy set of 4 cars to pass (4 in a row the best). Slow to their exact speed, just short of passing the first one, wait for the next day to start, and you'll pass your first 4 cars toward the next goal right away.

I never made it past day 8, but now I know that it does continue on to day 10 and beyond. What an AWESOME game. An even cooler one Activision did for the Atari 800 computer was the Great American Cross Country Road Race, which sounded a lot like this but had a lot more content and options.
I think my best time was 11 days, and man those cars were zipping by then. One accident, and you were cooked by 11 days, so you had to put the pedal to the metal, and fly by the other cars in order to qualify for the next day. A lot of skill, and a lot of luck trying to make it once you got over five days.

I think I still have some of my Activision Badges in storage somewhere. It was like Trophies before the internet : 1. You play the game and attain what ever score you need. 2. Take a picture of the TV screen 3. Send it in. 4. 4-8 weeks latter get your badge.
I have been trying to find this game....its gonna be easier now that I know its name. I played it a lot when I was 11....I think I was this capable too. Loved this game. It was very responsive and not clumsy.

I got that far once, my mom took a picture of the screen, we mailed it in and I got the patch!
i got to it, but we didn't have a working camera at the time or i would have had my patch.

I didn't know this game existed, and i grew up in this era. Love the sound effects and the graphics seem beyond 2600.

THE classic! So much fun inside a 4 Kb cart - its absolutely wonderful.
Especially very impressive for me is the beautiful daytime and weather presence which makes the game so much better.

I always liked the way your car's sound went all swooshy on the snow parts.
The best thing is the sound that becomes way more powerful when you throttle up. This ends up like some sort of industrial music.

When I was a kid we didn’t really get that you had to pass a certain number of cars, we just raced against each other’s high scores.
Great game play! Someone supposedly made it 398 days, and it took 45 hours.

Theres also Pole Position on Atari which is similiar, I like Enduro better but Pole Position isn't bad.

I never made it past day 8, but now I know that it does continue on to day 10 and beyond. What an AWESOME game. An even cooler one Activision did for the Atari 800 computer was the Great American Cross Country Road Race, which sounded a lot like this but had a lot more content and options.

I think my best time was 11 days, and man those cars were
zipping by then. One accident, and you were cooked by
11 days, so you had to put the pedal to the metal, and fly
by the other cars in order to qualify for the next day. A lot of
skill, and a lot of luck trying to make it once you got over
five days.

I think I still have some of my Activision Badges in storage somewhere. It was like Trophies before the internet :
1. You play the game and attain what ever score you need.
2. Take a picture of the TV screen
3. Send it in.
4. 4-8 weeks latter get your badge.

I have been trying to find this game....its gonna be easier now that I know its name. I played it a lot when I was 11....I think I was this capable too. Loved this game. It was very responsive and not clumsy.
Just so you can appreciate your 4k TVs more: When I was a boy, I had this game, a 2600 and a black and white TV!!
