The late ,great ,Dan Fogelberg described Mr Russ Kunkel as the best there ever was ,on numerous occasions ! Dan knew precisely what he was talking about ! You betcha !
I remember being a young drummer, dying to get on the road and in the studio. And I read an interview with Russ in Modern Drummer, where he offered two pieces of advice that have helped me to this day. He said to try not to rely on your set-up to determine whether you play well or not. In other words, be flexible about what goes where etc. He said he used to change his drum set up around on purpose to help him be prepared to play in any situation. And it also kept things fresh for him to change to it up occasionally. He also suggested practising in various types of foot ware! Which might sound funny, but it’s true-you should be able to play in any situation. And things like the kit not being set-up exactly right or having the wrong shoes on shouldn’t affect you. Be ready for anything. I took both pieces to heart and they helped shaped me as a young drummer. Here’s to the King of playing ‘for the song’-Thanks, Russ.
I just picked up a contemporary classic kit in red sparkle. Very nice tone, the DW double A heads work great on them, just a very nice balanced kit that has nice surprising sustain to the drums. I also have the Cherry / Spruce, and love what DW is doing with all these shell combinations. I was one who was not overly excited about their standard maple shells, always was one who liked drums with their own personality- maple was a little to average sounding for me.. But playing these other offerings has been refreshing, and they each have their own personality now. Great stuff.
Dear DW, I was not in any way shape or form criticizing DW's classics. I'm coming from a point of view with 32 years on the road and in the studio and the PDP wood hoop series is something that speaks the same language musically as the classic series but you can lug it around from gig to gig. However come studio time that's when you pull out the big guns "CLASSIC SERIES". Best of luck to the DW family in all your future endeavors.
It’s nice to see a demo where the drummer is letting the drums breathe and not going bananas and playing 32nd notes all over the kit!!! Sounds awesome!!
Looks and sounds like an old Premier kit I recorded a couple of weeks ago. It was all Poplar with coated Ambassadors. Very controlled and deep sound. I would like to hear what DW can do with short toms, or 'fast' toms.
Not only does the kit sound gorgeous but the cymbals are great too! I wonder what they are? (I think I saw paiste on the bottom of one of the crashes and the hats faintly seemed to have a 2002 logo on it)
When cymbals come to you free you can crank down those felts. I just dont know why you would, especially crash cymbals. Those are the ones he lands on every two bars throughout this entire nearly 7 min segment.
not sure about how this would work.. but I would LOVE if you guys did a collaboration with Dialtune.. I love their system for quick tone and head changes.. but I really want to use our Edge shell and other amazing DW shells *with* the dialtune hardware.. just my wish haha
What color is the hardware? Lugs and hoops? Chrome? Nickle? It would have been nice DW, if you in the future on videos like this, informed on the sizes of the drums, the finish, and the hardware color. Love your passion for drum making by the way:)
Hey DW, can y'all go back to putting single ply heads on kits - at least when you demo them? In this demo, the Tasmanian Timber, and the Pure A/B comparison, I hear too much of the 2ply heads and not enough of the drums themselves. I know the 2ply thing is new and hip and all, but I'm not feeling it. :/
I just don't understand why this kit cost so much money. If you were to put it up against the new PDP wood hoop kits that cost a thousand bucks, IMO you're just wasting your money on the DW high-end classic kit.

I could watch this all day long!
Outstanding sounding drums and Russ Kunkel is the man. Awesome stuff. Great job DW!
Hearing about this kit makes me want to play drums again.
Kit sounds amazing!! I'm fortunate to own several DW kits. I definitely would recommend DW..
John Good knows his wood. The man is a genius when it comes to drums. That is why DW is one of the most sought after drums.
Amen. I’m just lucky to have a Design Series kit.
Awsome sounding kit. Russ is such a great drummer. Lengendary.
This series and the new Santa Monica are my favorite DW kits to date. Great work John!
Those shells are gorgeous.
Beautiful color and perfect sound ! Made with quality and style ! Liked ! Salute from Brazil !

Thanks for the love Jeff.
Awesome sound and tone! These could easily be used in any genre of music and they would sound fantastic! If only I had that kit
DW in one word: PERFECT. Contemporary Classic in one word: AWESOME. John Good in one word: GENIUS. Russ Kunkel in one word: BRILLIANT
Dw are garbage compared to sonor drums
Ken McMillan in two words: THE MAN
that's the sound that I'm looking for. this drum set it's gorgeous 😍👌
yea and a hell of a lot of money
Nice drums basically a modern version of the radio king shell from the 30's
Beautiful drum set

That snare sound from 6:00 on is what I first loved about Russ Kunkel. Total hero to me.
He is the MAN!
@@dwdrums Classy Drummer (Russ Kunkel), On Doctor My eyes - His Drumming ,Snare, Symbols, Timing, Envelopes You and Smooths you Over ! Love It!
I love that ultra naturel sound. Would sound great on some 70's kinda records
Like this kind of drum videos! history of kit, brand! awesome!!!! DW drums is dream for all drummers!!! =)
Very nice shell configuration.
Russ is the man!
It’s nice to see a demo where the drummer is letting the drums breathe and not going bananas and playing 32nd notes all over the kit!!! Sounds awesome!!
😄
I need that Rolling Stones snare on the shelf behind John! More accurately, my mother --a diehard Stones fan-- needs it.
I need this kit now
The toms very much remind me off the sound that Gene Krupa got on his drums in "Sing Sing Sing".
Looks and sounds like an old Premier kit I recorded a couple of weeks ago. It was all Poplar with coated Ambassadors. Very controlled and deep sound. I would like to hear what DW can do with short toms, or 'fast' toms.
They are Fast Toms. :-) www.dwdrums.com/drums/collectors/sizes.asp
Beautiful kit! Why does Russ tighten down his cymbals so tight. I think one would break a lot of cymbals that way.
amazing
Not only does the kit sound gorgeous but the cymbals are great too! I wonder what they are? (I think I saw paiste on the bottom of one of the crashes and the hats faintly seemed to have a 2002 logo on it)
DW drums: best drum porn ever!
Sound phenomenal wow. Hey what type of DW heads are being used ??? Smooth white ??!!

I would love to hear them with the coated clear 1ply. Heads. 2 plus are killing them.they need to breath.
not sure about how this would work.. but I would LOVE if you guys did a collaboration with Dialtune.. I love their system for quick tone and head changes.. but I really want to use our Edge shell and other amazing DW shells *with* the dialtune hardware.. just my wish haha
What up DW I would like to learn how to build drums in California.
What color is the hardware? Lugs and hoops? Chrome? Nickle? It would have been nice DW, if you in the future on videos like this, informed on the sizes of the drums, the finish, and the hardware color. Love your passion for drum making by the way:)
I could not afford these so i bought the pearl export with poplar/mahogany shells, sounds pretty good with emperors on it.
Anybody know what size kick drum that is?
Great drums! I would love to hear them with Evans UV Level 1 batter heads, for a little more breathing but good sustain.
Don’t sound as tubby as most DW drums. That may be because of the heads though?
JOHN Good &; DW R. A class act , just saying
Have you guy's thought along the lines of three layers maple one layer pine then 3 more layers of maple?Just an Idea.
crashed on one literally every 2 bars the whole video lol.
I dont know why that stood out to me
Now I can't un-hear that, lol
When you have Paistes - you want to hear them! :)
Nice drums, $$$$$$$$
How?
I'll take one + two+ three+ four+.......thank you very much!
🙏
Nice kit for my money I'll go with sonor
Ha ha, sonor is not cheaper....

Hi Dexter. We will put any heads you like on a kit when you order. Just have the dealer let us know. Cheers 🥁

I agree.. Just got PDP CM's with new heads. For my needs... more than good enough!
These dudes are absolute nerds in drums.....
Para meus ouvidos está desafinada! ✌
Take that, all you tonewood snobs who look down your noses at poplar.
Meh, nothing stands out, except cranking those cymbals down like a dummy.
Out of tune! 🌐
They sound weird
