I played hockey in connecticut from 1980-84. One rink we played in on the travel team was called the rat rink. The place Newman worked on his skating prepping for this movie. It was a famous rink for that reason, but the biggest dump you can imagine!
Cool. My French mostly sucks, so I`ll never know. I can translate "il lance et le buuuuuuuuuut" and that`s about it. I am glad that my Quebecois compatriots enjoyed this movie, too.
One of my all time favorite (and funniest) sports movies! Saw it so many times back in the days, in the early 1980s. Other favorites are ''The Bad News Bears'' (1976), ''North Dallas Forty'' (1979), ''The Longest Yard'' (1974), ''Hoosiers'' (1986), ''Invincible'' (2006) and ''Moneyball'' (2011). Another great Ice Hockey movie is ''Miracle'' (2004) with Kurt Russell as Herb Brooks. Greetings from The Netherlands.
The Bad News Bears is my fave from your list, there. Miracle is about a major hockey victory by the US, so I doubt we will watch it. lol. Maybe. More likely, we are done with sports movies for a while. There are so many classics to dig into.
@@peterengelen2794 I definitely have some Westerns in mind. the one issue is that he and I have different taste in Westerns. We actually get into a bit in a video that hasn't gone live, yet. It makes it a slightly harder genre to navigate for us. Still, I can say we will watch some.
I've loved the movie since it came out. Coincidentally many years later I had a son and daughter both of whom played hockey thru high school at a fairly high level. R rated or not, I don't know a single hockey player that hadn't seen Slap Shot many times.
Nice. I should see if they are still around. I doubt it would be that significant to him, since he just watched the movie, but it would be a fun game to go to.
@@wewatchwithchad after the movie, the NAHL folded. A new league opened, the Johnstown Chiefs played at the War Memorial with Steve Carlson as head coach. I understand Steve is retired now and had a bout with cancer. Dave Hanson moved back to his hometown. He found religion and started teaching youth to play hockey.
@@wewatchwithchad BTW, in the movie, Nick Brophy, (the one that was drunk and p****ed himself when he got slammed into the boards) was played by John Gofton. John lived down the road from me. I did know him.
Dave Hanson, who played #16 Jack Hanson, has a great book, 'Slap Shot Original: The Man, the Foil, and the Legend'. While about more than the movie, Dave covers the event in detail. It is an amazing and hilarious story. Dave, and the other two Hanson Brothers were minor league hockey players, not actors. But they kind of stole the show. The screenplay was written by Nancy Dowd, whose brother Ned played minor league hockey and whose experiences were the basis for the story. Ned Dowd actually plays Ogie Ogilthorpe. And yes, many actors tried out for roles, but only a very few had played hockey and could skate well enough. Paul Newman, who had played hockey when young, said that Slap Shot was the most fun he ever had making a movie,
The Hanson brothers are actually based on the Carlson brothers. Dave Hanson does play "Jack Hanson" in the movie but "Steve & Jeff" are played by Steve & Jeff Carlson. All three Carlson brothers played in the NHL and WHA leagues.
As I watch this video, I'm flashing back to one of the two movies I watched with my father in the cinema. It was this director's previous The Sting and I will always remember it fondly.
Hilarious movie! Paul Newman has to get a hockey team together FAST and doesn't care where these LUNATICS come from? Forget about knowing anything about hockey, an absolute hoot😊
Glad to see you guys review this. I think you're the only ones to review this film. It's a shame. Good first impression of your channel for me. Long live the Hanson's!

"Goon" 2011 is the worthy successor to this. not that you asked, you and your dad would like: "The Asphalt Jungle" (1950) - excellent crime caper "Ice Station Zebra" 1968 - cool espionage thriller "Jeremiah Johnson' (1972) - best mountain man movie
I have one of those on the list for him, but no idea when it will come up in the rotation. All good movies, either way. Goon has been getting a lot of love. I`ll have to consider it
Fun fact: The guy who played the organist is currently the organist for the Seattle Kraken 😁
He also wears his hockey helmet !
Thanks for this. You are one of the only people to review Slap Shot for some reason. It's epic. Thanks again!
YEP!!

about time someone reacted to the greatest sports movie ever.
So if you're keeping it Canadian, is "Strange Brew" on the list?
Its not, not on the list. It would be worth it to just hear my dad do kurukukukukukuku

Don't forget "Goon" if we're talkin' hockey.
"Invincible" is such a good movie yet it only has a few reactions.
Gotta love the Hanson Brothers.

Yes. John lived down the street from me. We weren't drinking buddies, but I knew him
Another fun fact, in the first game, look for number 7 in green, on the opposition. That’s NHL head coach Bruce Boudreau!

I ssked my grandma to rent this on netflix when i was 13. She thought it was vulgar but i enjoyed every minute of it.

“Dave’s a killer”

First time I watched Slap Shot it made me laugh so hard my sides hurt. Check out the movie Goon too please.
