Growing up playing hockey in the OHL and professionally I think I've seen this movie over 300 times on our bus trips. Ogie was always an idol. So amazing to hear that Bob Costas was his broadcaster. What a story
I was coachin' in Omaha in 1948 and Eddie Shore sends me this guy who was a terrible masturbator, you know, couldn't control himself. Why, he would get deliberate penalties so he could get over in the penalty box all by himself and damned if he wouldn't... you know...
I was a manager at a motel where the dusters stayed at in the 70'S. I became a mother to most of them except for the "bear" .Goldie would come over and have tea with me. He would tell me about his mother and other private parts of his life. He was no where like the Goldie here. One day he wants to get some sun, He took some towels and placed them on the roof of his old van, then climbed up and lay there . I was upstairs and called out to him and laughed as no one knew he was there but me. Eddie Pizunski , was another one, fighting on the ice. Because of the fighting every one went to the games. It made it interesting. Billy Gratton was at the apartment everyday to drink tea and they all watched the soaps .So many memories.
Did they stay at the Holiday Inn, downtown? (I'm from Binghamton too...and was a young child when the Dusters were around) I'm old enough to remember the Binghamton Whalers and then the Rangers, whey they were in Bingo.
Listening to all these Goldthorpe tales and then watching him talk actually made me go from finding this funny to very disturbing. He clearly has some mental issues going way back. Hearing he now works construction around Vancouver makes me think he's never evolved or moved past his earlier antics.
He played junior for Thunder Bay Vulcans when they played Guelph CMC's in the Centennial Cup playoffs. This was the most brawl filled hockey series I have ever seen. Police were called multiple times. Fights in the stands. You name it.
Bob Costas said that Goldie was a good hockey player he could skate, handle the puck, defend, but all that being said, he just preferred to beat the shit out of you! Bob Kostis is a legendary announcer, but that's the best thing I've ever heard him say
goldie was living in thunder bay and was asked to try out for sault ste marie’s team. they cut him but were too scared to tell him so they let him keep skating while they flew abb cava in to tell ogie he didn’t make it and take him back to tbay.
He was called up to the Minnesota Fighting Saints in the '73-'74 playoffs; 3 games, no goals, no assists, 25 penalty minutes. Was shot by a drug dealer in 1980 when he intervened for an old girlfriend, resulting in kidney and urinary tract damage that pretty well ended his pro hockey career. Needless to say he got into a lot of bar fights...he isn't huge so a fair number of boozed up patrons would convinced themselves he wasn't THAT tough....to their cost.
My tussle with goldie. Dauphin Manitoba, Canada Midget Hockey tournament. He hit my defence partner (Bob Gassoff) from behind . I came in and cross checked him (from behind) . 10 seconds of fame . He got 2 min for roughing, i got 2 min for cross checking.
They used it to cut down their twigs " wooden sticks" because new ones only came in their unmodified length. Each player has a set stick length that they use, due to their height and preference. Longer sticks tend to be used by defense for their length in poke checking and they gave defense better slappers from the blue line or point. While shorter ones were favored by offense for stick handling, wrist shots, and snapshots. It's not like baseball where bats come from the factory, ready to go. Hockey sticks, back in those days, required to be cut to the players preference and they had to take a torch to the blade and make their own curv. That is also why in the USA hockey rulebook, hockey stick curves have to be within a certain parameter in order to be legal. Some players would give it such a wicked curve, that ref's would have to measure them on the ice or you would get tossed in the sin bin.
Digging the unintentional siren🚨 in the background as Costas tells his story ..if it would've been a minute or so later in the story, would've perfect, or maybe had gone on without notice... serendipitous🏒🤟🏼
Goldie is a Steel Stud framer on high rises in Vancouver now. He's an old man now but still crazy as fuck. He's gotten kicked off numerous sites for punching people out.
+BIRDMAN LUGZ Eddie Pizunski now lives in Michigan married a girl from there now owns a bar there ,. I was invited to their wedding but didn't want to travel that far from home, just sent a gift out to them. I liked the Goldie that I knew.
I would tend to think that, a Gentleman of his talents could find a much better line of work then construction. If I was part of the local 'organized legitimate businessman's league' I would so hire him, once his hockey days are over. Something tells me he would take to that line of work, like a duck to water.
I thought this was going to be about Bill Goldthorpe, oh no it is Bob Costas acting out his tough guy dreams whilst wearing his teenager size 38 small "sports" coat.
Bob has changed up his story about the 4-2 game. I'm not sure who Wynette is, but Bob references Galen Head in the same memory: th-cam.com/video/EhxRR6mdtbs/w-d-xo.html
haha, no worries. A little crazy never hurt anyone. I was making reference to a buddy of mine that is from there! Be proud, you live in God's country. Cheers!
I worked with Goldie in San Diego CA for 6 years when I first met him I had to bring my 357 to the job golide would threaten me daily but he knew I had a gun and I would have shot him.he doesn't stop I like that guy I hope he's doing well
Reminds me when I was playing all Ontario's in 87 against Cayuga. I got in three fights and low and behold Marty McSorley tried getting too me, I was told later on. Four guys held him back ;) The foil was put on as I was one of three players left in the dressing room. True story !!
Gord Gallant would have kicked Paul Stewart's ass in his prime...a middle weight who fought like a Heavyweight and did fight many a Heavyweight (fact) They even used same exact color sweaters as the Minnesota Fighting Saints

yeah, unpredictable, except no, entirely predictable. he'll always lose his shit and go nuts, sooner or later. guy had more concussions than i've suffered in my life before he was 15. listen to him talk, look at his actions, the guy was ruined mentally before he hit puberty.
Another promotion of mindless violence, under disguise of "colorful character" , when its obvious that he just enjoys hurting people. If you condoning this type of behavior, don't complain when you become victim of violence yourself.

The movie passes the test of time 46 years later and I still can’t get enough of it ,still fell out of bed laughing
Spot on buddy and the best sport film of all time
They're on a BUS and he has fingertip-access to a HACKSAW...on a BUS... alrighty then...

Great story, slap shot best Hockey movie ever

I thought that there was a biopic filming?
He played junior for Thunder Bay Vulcans when they played Guelph CMC's in the Centennial Cup playoffs. This was the most brawl filled hockey series I have ever seen. Police were called multiple times. Fights in the stands. You name it.
God Bless Canada
Now this is hockey!!!
Just finished reading The Real "Olgie! The Life and Legend of Goldie Goldthorpe" if your a fan of Goldie, then this is a must read
Bob Costas said that Goldie was a good hockey player he could skate, handle the puck, defend, but all that being said, he just preferred to beat the shit out of you!
Bob Kostis is a legendary announcer, but that's the best thing I've ever heard him say
i worked with goldthorpe. quite the intimidating man.💪 but once you get to know him he has a soft spot for sure.
Yea well I knew him and never saw any
goldie was living in thunder bay and was asked to try out for sault ste marie’s team. they cut him but were too scared to tell him so they let him keep skating while they flew abb cava in to tell ogie he didn’t make it and take him back to tbay.
a savage.
Lived in my hometown for quite a few years he is a legend around here 👈 👀

Bill Goldthorpe, as a Fighting Saint in 1974-75, provokes Gordie Howe in the first round of the playoffs!
Although I’m not a big Bob Costas fan but this is a great interview. My Syracuse “Oglethorpe” jersey from Slap Shot is a favorite of mine.
Ogleterp?!?! - Denis Lemieux 😂
hey ogie!!! buy you a soda after the game!!!!

Ib stryder That would have been a great match up, as Gassoff could certainly handle himself as well 👍
2:12 he just preferred to beat the s*** out of you. Tremendous!!! 🤣😂
am I the only one wondering why there's a hacksaw on the bus?
Yes Steven that thought had occurred to me. Why the hacksaw Goldie?
For the team mohel
In case bob Costas pissed him off?

he inspires me to start playing hockey
Pick up the game man. Been playing most of my life. Block a shot for your team and feel the brotherhood build. It's something else when it's good.
@@scottdunlop7442 wow. Profound wisdom
Bob Costas. As a performer, one of a kind. As a man, one of the kindest.
Costas is ,was a great announcer. its the morons in this thread that say he's an idiot who are idiots.

Sid Vicious played hockey ?
Better than his bass playing.
😂😂😂
@@sdgakatbk But not as good as his softball skills.
Did vicious was a pu$$y That’s how he got his name. It was an insult because he couldn’t fight. Freddie Mercury roughed him up for talking smack.
Working construction in your late 60’s. This guy is dense. Good story though.
I miss old time hockey 🏒
🤜🏼🥴🤛🏼
Toe Blake and Eddie Shore!!!
HEY Godlie Goldthorpe is 1 of us BCers!
Read he lives and works in Vancouver? True?
My late father was from Johnstown, Pa.
Goldthorpe vs. Harley Race...Who you got?
That would be a good fight. Put Haku in there for a 3 way.
It should be called: My name is Bob Costas.
I doubt Goldie is an NPR listener, but we really need to get him on the Moth Radio Hour.
The Vinnie Jones of Hockey.
Nah. Everyone else is the Goldthorpe of everything else.
Awesome backstory.
Jesus Christ this guy must be a warrior in his former life or something.
I remember him with the Binghamton Dusters. Him and Paul Stewart were on the team at the same time.
'Dusters' is a good name for a hockey team!
@Willie Gordon and was probably one of if not the best besides Kerry Fraser. I'd bet Paul will end up in the HOF in the officials category.
Goldie, i miss you. When you coming back to Kellys.
Gabe and the boys.
Oh-gell-torp? Bruin Bobby Shmautz was the origin of Tim 'Dr. Hook' McKraken. Lots of real-life examples in the film.
Haha he hit the lines hand when he wouldnt drop the puck fast enough. Ill play on his line anytime.
This Ogie is great !!! Love this guy !!!

A terror of The CNR Bunkhouse in Hornepayne...just don't leave a mess!!!!!
Met him at a bar in port Huron Michigan around 2006.
Paul Tantardini was up there too!

Ha Ha Ha that is on point. Notice Goldie never mentions it, I'll take "things that never happened for $1000, Alex." Costas is insufferable.
Syracuse was a must see game, always. My Dad owned the White House at the time and always had free tickets.
Um, your dad owned the White House? lol Isn’t that government property? Please elaborate. 😂
Costas! I'd buy him a steak for sure now.
You're on the team bus, heading home, after the game...Why do you have a hacksaw???
...The story, within the story...
He looks like he can walk around central park in new York and muggers. Would give them their money.
saw him play in Johnstown PA
I did a summer session at UPJ in 1987.

I would have paid to see him fight Bob Probert.
Or someone from his own era....Dave “The Hammer” Schultz!
Probert and Tie Domi both ended to have their comeuppance.
@Eilliw Nodrog um, no....
From Hornpayne.....another small town crazy

costas shoulda stuck with this kind of reporting. as a political reporter he made a good doorstop.
Could you imagine him fighting Dave (The Hammer) Schultz (or any of the Broad Street Bullies), or Dave (Tiger) Williams?
DevilFish69 Curious as to how Goldie would have done in a fight with Bob Probert.
DevilFish69 or The "Missing Link" Gaetz
Bruce Pappas
Prime vs Prime?
Probably Probert. But both would be a goddamn bloody mess. One may be standing at the end, but both would lose.
Ogie was a beast, but Probert fought the best of the best in the big league

Can't stand Costas! Looks like Bettman's brother.
