Im an absolute beginner with DaVinci , this was one of many tutorials that im about to watch , my very first one ! And it was easy to follow through (i am a premier pro user tho ) , but color grading wise this has to be the best software. Thank you for a great tutorial!

Wow! I have been wanting to get into color grading for a long time for my 3d animation projects but got overwhelmed, until I watched this the whole way through and now I finally get it 😅
Great video. I used some of my D-Log drone footage to go along with your video tutorial. Would love to see you do a video on more complex footage, like ships on water with land in the background. My basic approach was to break up the elements in to "water", "Land", "ship hull", "ship deck", and "ship cabin". The biggest issue I had using your process was tracking because my footage rotated around the ship which had a "shadow" side and a "bright" side but the footage was continuous so it was almost impossible to do tracking (it would get lost because the entire ship was never always in frame). Then there was the issue of adjusting shadow side and light side while trying to keep a consistent water color. I never was able to get my footage to come out they way I wanted and ended up just go back to simple DJI LUT with some minor adjustments. Would love to see how you approach something similar to ship in water with landscape in the background?
Awesome color grade tutorial, it took me most of the day because you would show something then I would get lost in playing with it, but it really opened up what you can do with this. Omg man, you blew my mind so many times and I'm 15 minutes in. I had no idea you could auto detect cuts when importing media. WHAT THE HELL!! That's exactly what I need for the last 5 or so projects where I'm taking over from another editor! Also, that the stills screen taking up space that I got rid of thinking it was useless, is meant as a repository of still grabs and act as saved LUTs. Again..... WTF!!! I feel almost drunk right now, I can't believe it. I've been using Final Cut Pro with Color Finale 2, and this is already SO MUCH more streamlined and I didn't even get to the color grading part!! Thank you for this tutorial. Seriously, THANK YOU!

Node tree structures can change project to project and person to person, it really depends on personal workflow, what the shot calls for etc. I would say that if you want to dive deeper into all of the specific nodes then the DaVinci Resolve user manual is an incredibly good resource. It comes with the download of the program and you can also grab it from the Blackmagic Design website, fully searchable too. You'll get way more detailed information in there than I could put forward in a beginner tutorial / this comment! I hope it can be of some use for you 😄

Thanks! System wise I work from a humble MacBook (and have for basically the last 15 years! Currently working on the M1 Pro chip and I find it really excels at this kind of work.I work between Resolve, After Effects, Premiere and Illustrator mostly and haven't really had any slip ups. Hope that helps.
Excellent content! Just 1 question. I have DVR 18.6, and I cannot for the life of me find that "magic wand" button on top left that works with the qualifier dropper. Help? Thanks!
Working in 18.6 I got stuck after the skintone correction. I have masked out the skin tone using by color mask, fine tuned it by making a mask with the pen, tracked it. But when I do a color correction I will see thing changing after Shift H and seeing only the color tool, but switching back to the whole image using Shift H I can't see the correction and nothing happens when I use the color wheel. What am I doing wrong?
Awesome Tutorial Tom! Question - when I set up the parallel nodes exactly the way you did, the "ambience" node still affects the skin node. I switched which was on "top" but it didn't matter, the whole image was still affected. What am I doing wrong?!
This is a great question and a very fair one and its something I didn't fully explain in this video. Skin tone in the sense of color grading is really about balancing the hues and saturation in the skin and then the brightness and contrast. If we think of skin tone as being off, or not natural generally we're seeing greens and yellows which give an unhealthy look. The skin tone indicator on the vector scope is a guide for where the hues should be sitting for us to register that skin tone as healthy. Now despite the changes in pigmentation and complexion between different ethnicities and skin types, the hues for 'healthy' looking skin all sit within a relatively narrow band. So to answer in short, yes this skin tone indicator line can be used as a guideline for skin tones of various pigmentations, and then from there you're tweaking the grade to bring out the most natural, healthy looking skin you can (if you're going for a natural, healthy look).
I just followed along, and discovered that the noise reduction stuff is all in the paid version - I might have to upgrade! (Also working in 4096x2160 is paid version only it turns out). Great tutorial thank you!
Is there a way (or shortcut) to enable or disable ONLY ONE section on a Color node in the color tab? Not the whole node like CTRL+D, i need to enable or disable just one section, lets say a "before and after" for only the primaries. I don't want to break up every color edit to million Nodes for a reason, is there a way you think? Thank you.

Hello I can't find the solution anywhere but how to apply different color grading to a long travelling scene? I can't do cuts and apply to each cuts because it's only 1 scene.

Try going to Workspace in the top toolbar and then selecting Reset UI Layout, I just played around with it then to see if I could replicate your setup and then get it back to my layout and it worked. Hopefully it helps for your case!
