    I must admit 😉 I will often pause your videos to fully read some of the comments only because I’m too old to multitask (or I can’t be bothered) but I do find a lot of the comments relevant to what I’m doing right now, that you might not be doing 😀 so thank you to all 👍

    My father's family was Scottish and Cherokee, and he grew up farming, in Purcell, OK. When he was a boy, he knew about the Scotland Highlands, but never got the chance to see one; he would have LOVED the chance to raise these cattle

    It's nice to see Americans keeping Highlands and not bothering about their colour. Here in Scotland we've been breeding out everything except the iconic honey colour for centuries. In fact, naturally they were originally mainly black, which gave rise to the word 'blackmail', which was the money demanded by Lowland Scottish clans to allow Highlanders to drive their cattle south across their land to the great 'trysts' or cattle auctions where the beasts were sold, slaughtered, butchered and the carcases mainly salted and barreled to feed the Royal Navy.

    Years ago back in the 60s when growing up there was herfords with horns especially the bulls would have weight mounted on the tips to control the angel or direction they grow saw many where the horns turned down and in less of a weapon some at sometime had the tips tried to keep from growing in their face or other areas close to head . We at one time had around 100 cows mixed mostly herfords couple dairy and mixed black cows and Angus

    Thanks for the history & glossary of terms. I found you through Chad at Adler Farms, one of the several family homestead & sanctuary farmers that I follow. You have started a fire inside Chad. With all of the different animal breeds that he maintains, he has finally found his direction regarding his passion for "fur, feather & bristle" critters. Having been raised in dairy & agricultural rich rural Western Massachusetts & having worked on 2 of the 4 farms on my street from age 11 through my teens, I have developed a fondness & respect for cattle specifically. My Father who was the oldest of 6 siblings having been raised on his parent's farm, couldn't wait to enter the U.S. Army when he turned 18 near the end of World War II, just to leave the farm life & discover the World. I grew up on 54 acres of farm & forest land with a beautiful brook ran through it, that was the West side of the family farm when my Grandparents retired & terminated it. He never got farm life out of his blood though because even though he worked as a Project Manager in the Commercial/Industrial building construction business, working all around the Northeast, he ended up with 7 to 12 Whiteface beef cattle for breeding & consumption. He finally retired from his career at 56 & dedicated his time to the "pseudo-farm" that he created. He purchased 3 Massey Ferguson tractors, both gas & diesel, with all of the implements to prepare, plant & harvest his own hay, as well as 6,000 Douglas & Concolor Fir trees in staggered plantings for Christmas sale in addition to an acre of Butternut Squash for annual sale & his own massive fruit & vegetable gardens. He was definitely a role model for me regarding honest work ethic. I knew though that I wasn't going to be a farmer because I never saw one take a vacation!!! lol Keep up the great content.

He's a good boy and Chad and his dad of Adler Farms have been feeding him and they pet him and I think he likes it! He's very smart too. Thank you for taking the time to explain the Highlander's and some interesting things about them.

    Are they good momma’s? Do they have difficulty birthing like some other breeds?
    Does their beef taste better than other breeds?
    Can you prove genetics (pedigree for registration) thru DNA?

    So if I was to try to raise these in Texas they are mostly for meat or sold to other breeders not just taken to a regular auction? Also I use hay rings to feed so how much of a problem wud that be with the highland horns?

    • @100AcreWoodHighlands
      @100AcreWoodHighlands  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They make excellent beef, but there is a pretty decent demand in TX/OK for live sales. I wouldn’t ever sell at a regular stock yard auction, but most of the highland associations have auctions. I have a regular hay ring, but haven’t used it because of the horns. I’ve been looking at hay rings meant for horses, but not sure what I want yet
