I love it. I have a pear tree, and it takes a LOT of effort to peel all that fruit for the freezer! While it is worth it for a winter's worth of pear desserts I do NOT like peeling a hundred pounds of pears in the Fall!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the tip. I see from some of the other comments that some varieties don't sluff off as well as others. I just picked about 30 pounds from my tree this morning so I'll try this and see if it works. It will save me a lot of time if it does. Thanks again.

I have been doing pears this way for over twenty years. I rub them like they are a bar of soap to get the skin off. When I told an elderly aunt how I did it she was flabbergasted! She and her husband had been peeling pears with a knife for canning for forty years. She commented on all the time they had wasted! lol

Some varieties of pears blanch and peel better than others. We canned a different variety and I had to peel them all with a knife because the skins would not slip.

Hey, Todd! It's just been a crazy fall, as fall usually is. Been busy with getting wood, pears, apples, hunts, and still making sure everyone is fed and dressed and off to all their activities every day. Add a writing project I've been working on and something had to give for a bit! Glad to share this little tip--it's a huge time saver!

What am I doing wrong???? I have tried with 12 pears...and my pear skin is not "sluffing" off like yours at all!!! I tried to let them go longer, and my pears started turning brown :-( My water is not boiling, and my pears are ripe! Does the water need to be ice cold???
