It was almost like James Blunt wrote this song for me and my father. I had to watch him die. I spent his final days with him. The words "I love you" were never spoken in my home. It was always implied by how hard that man worked. But the last time i saw him coherent as i was leaving his room i said "I love you dad" and for the first and last time i heard him say "I love you too Jim". Every time i hear this song, i sob uncontrollably because i miss that man so much. He was the last person who actually cared about me. I've had no one since.
I’m so sorry. Man to man I wish I could give you a tight hug right now.. And I know for a fact that he was and is damm proud of you.
You're lucky, i don't even have the chance to say "i love you" to my father, while our story shares some similarities.
But it is what it is i guess, life goes on one more time.

My father's last words to me, in his sick state, could very well have been, "You're useless."
Before I walked out of his hospital room, I stopped and said, "I love you." And he said, "I love you, too."
That was the last time I saw him conscious.
You're fortunate to be with your Dad in his last days. I was working overseas as a nurse when my Dad died. I saw him via video call and just told him I'm coming home. He expired the day before I got my leave approved😢

Thank you so much for this song it actually has helped me heal some ill harbor feelings, because my father was never there for me when I was growing up as a child and well into adulthood and he was battling cancer and knew that he wasn’t going to make it much longer, and tried to make arrangements to see me And I just couldn’t bring myself for that visit. No regrets but this song has help me heal. Thank you so much and I know that’s not the way that you meant for it but it’s exactly what I needed to know because it is my time to chase the monsters away

My father passed away 19 years ago. I took care of him during his last days. It was really difficult watching this strong, temperamental man become a weak, fragile one. When I finally asked him if he loved me ( in my family we don't use loving words); he told me: "you are the best thing I did in this life". This words are kept in my heart until this day. My sister sent me this song after our dad passed. I guess I'm what you'd call a hard man. I don't cry, and I don't believe men are supposed to cry. Honestly, I've never heard of you before she sent me the video. But, I'm thankful she did. This is exactly the things I was thinking during his funeral in my head. The promises I was praying he could hear. That he could rest easy. Knowing he raised me right. That I would pick up where he left off. That his legacy lived on through me and would be passed on to my son. That he could rest easy. That it was now my turn to chase those monsters away. Well done, sir. You put my thoughts into a beautiful song. That I'll take to my grave. Until I can rest. Then my son can chase those monsters away.

Soooo relatable. Especially how having kids changes your entire perspective on life and gives you an entirely different appreciate for your parents. Prior to having kids, it felt so easy to focus only on my parents flaws and failures. After having kids, I realized how much more they got right than wrong, and how hard it will be when they are gone and I am the one that everyone will look to when things get bad. Hats off to you James Blunt.

Monsters is a very thought provoking song I lost my dad an ex ASM in the REME a very intelligent man served 24 years to see him alone in a care home ravaged by Parkinsons disease in the last week of his life he couldnt rest untill he was sure my mother was ok. Great respect for my farther.

I can relate my father also had problems with his kidneys. It got to a point that he couldn't do dialysis anymore we lost him shortly after that he passed away on June 6th 2015 and I miss him every single day. James, I first heard this song sung by Iam at his American Idol audition, and I later heard about you writing for your father. This song is so beautifully written and priceless, and I’ve been listening to it everyday since the first day I heard Iam sing it. Watching you sing it with Iam on AI was so special, especially when you changed the word “own” to “arm” as you reached out and grabbed his arm as he struggled to sing. You’re a class act. I’m so happy to hear that your father is doing well.

❤😢 This week was the first time I heard this song. It is amazingly beautiful! I love it with all my heart! My mom passed away on July 30th five years ago this year. It was very similar in how my mom passed. I was holding her hand when she passed! I can relate in everything James Blunt is saying about his dad as for me was with my mom. Incredible song. I lost my mom and cared for her before the end and the song is so fitting and gorgeous and true. This whole interview is great, he really is a humble nice guy.
Same for me. My mom died from several strokes in 2015 and by the end she couldnt talk or even open her eyes. But when I kissed her good night that last night, she replied perfectly 'good night'.
And that was the last thing she said to me. This song reminds me of that and I always cry my eyes out when I hear it.

It's an awful time in life when you know a loved one is about to die. Nothing prepares you for the heart wrenching heartache of it all. I had a difficult relationship with my father as a teenager and as an adult but when my father reached for my hand in hospital hours before he died I held it but not as a father and son but as this song says as two grown men saying goodbye. My father said forgive me and I said to him there is nothing to forgive.. we just had different opinions. When I left the hospital and was heading home I got the call that he had passed and went back to the hospital. So, if there is any glimmer of hope in any relationship just don't leave it to late to forgive and forget like two grown adults
His father wouldn’t die if he got a kidney transplant. James would automatically be a match to donate a kidney to him. So I hope it worked out

I basically cradled my dad as he passed away, my veiw was hes always been there for me so it's my turn to be there for him he had pancreatic cancer and from diagnosis to the end was 8 weeks, I cradled him and stroked his his head as he used to me as a child when I needed comforting, I'm not going to lie as anyone else who has experienced anything like this knows its the single hardest moment of my life, It was 18 months or so ago and I've still not really dealt with it. Monster's really touched me and helps me every time I hear it, it could have been written for that exact moment.......

I cry every time I listen to this song. Yesterday was the anniversary of his death. I played it on repeat. I said I wanted to be in my Dad's hospital bed holding him when he dies, but he went out while napping in his hospital bed. When my Mom passed 12 years later, I went to the Airbnb to grab some lunch and she passed when I wasn't there. I felt my heart shatter for the second time. 😢
