  • Potsdam is a city known for its gardens, palaces & lakes. It is the largest city of the German state of Brandenburg, and is the best day trip from Berlin (literally less than one hours drive away!)
    300 years ago, Potsdam was transformed into one of Europe's most splendid royal cities. The Palaces and Parks of Potsdam, which cover about 500 hectares of parkland were awarded UNESCO World Heritage status back in 1990. Walking around Sanssouci Palace is a must-do experience when in Potsdam! You also can't miss the picturesque Dutch Quarter & Inner City! If you have time, we recommend a stop at the Russian Quarter as well. :) It's truly a wonderful city and we now understand why everyone has recommended a visit to Potsdam!

    The park of Schloss Sanssouci is one of my all time favorite places to visit. Along the river Havel you can have a nice castle tour, very impressive and exciting. If you love cheesecakes, the café Dreikäsehoch in Berlin is the place to be, they offer a huge variety of cheesecakes, very delicious.
    I'm impressed that Willa is trying all the food you are ordering.
    Schloss Cecilienhof in Potsdam is a very historical place you should visit if you get the chance.
    Thanks for the lovely video, have a nice Sunday.

    I lived in Potsdam for 10 years. I think the city is beautiful because the city is such a mix between big city and small town. I lived in Potsdam since the 5th grade, so I grew up there.

    King Frederick II (The Great Frederick) spent much of his later years in Sansouci. It was a beloved place for him. There are so many anecdotes connected with this place, but two are the most important. You can see a windmill in a not so great distance to the palace. Frederichk was so annoyed by the noise the windmill made, that he ordered the miller to close it and tear it down. The miller did not budge and went to court, where the judges decided in favor of him and against Frederick, who had the judges arrested and thrown in jail. Public pressure rose to a boiling point and he had to brelease the judges and accept their verdict. Another anecdote is about his friendship to the great French philosopher Voltaire, who was a frequent guest at Sansouci. One day, Voltaire must have put a burr under Frederick´s saddle, so Frederick wrote in a whim "Voltaire is an ass" , signed it and passed it on to other guest. It finally reached Voltaire, who read it, laughed and read out loud.: Voltaire is an ass, Frederick the second!

      That windmill myth is a great distortion of a real lawcase in Frederick's time. Some local landowner somewhere in Brandenburg had cut off the water supply for a watermill. The miller took legal action against him and Frederick intervened in favour of the miller. That would have been normal procedure in the age of absolutism , but Brandeburg/Prussia was in that transition towards what we call "Rechtsstaat" in which law is king and the monarch has to serve it. In the end the court ruled according to written law in that matter. That is the core of that legend.

    • @christiankastorf4836
      @christiankastorf4836 ปีที่แล้ว

      In fact it was the newly-built palace that took away the wind from the much smaller post mill (the ones that are resting on a vertical pivot so that the entire mill can be turned into the wind, not just the top where the wings/sails are attached to). At least that is what the miller feared. Not much later that mill caught fire and Frederick supported to miller with some hundreds of thalers to have a new mill built in that "Dutch" style. The present mill is a reconstruction, the orginal one burnt down in WW II.

    The sad thing is that the style of Architecture you see in Potsdam is kind of what all of Berlin looked like. Berlin in the 1920s was considered pretty much one the prettiest cities in the world and was more or less the world's number 1 for film and art.
    There are some old videos of Berlin before the ww2 bombings and it's really worth seeing. I love the city as it is today, but it's certainly more the flair and the atmosphere, whereas in an alternate dimenson it could have been the architecture as well... But then it would have been more pretty than Paris, as many considered it at the time, and the prices would have been astronomical, affecting flair and what kind of people could afford to live there... Who knows what might have been?

    • @OurStorytoTell
      @OurStorytoTell  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah we wish we could have seen what Berlin was like before the bombings!! Wow, it would have been amazing.

    Hi all, thanks for getting so much info first hand of Potsdam. Never thought it would be worth to visit and never didnt hear about the dutch quarter. I have known about Sanssouci and I think your were lucky to be there when it wasnt so crowded. Great to see Tanner doesnt need to carry Willa most of the time. Good to see she has fun even a garden might not be so interested for her. Noa also enjoy her life with her proud parents. CU

    When the weather is so nice, I "strongly" recommend a trip on the Wannsee ferry to Alt Kladow. The largest lake in Berlin is the "Wannsee" and the largest forest is the "Grunewald" Kladow is followed by Gatow with the old English airport - one of the three airports of the Allies - In any case, a nice trip. You feel like you are in a holiday resort with a lake view and a nice restaurant, but beware of the wild boar families 🙂

    I find berlin anything but beautiful. Potsdam is really very beautiful, there are so many beautiful places in Germany it is difficult for me as a local to visit all the places work family...... you are such a super sweet family, you are an asset to Germany, you are now a part of this country. Greetings from Cologne

    • @publicminx
      @publicminx ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Berlin has in fact masses of beautiful spots (already the many dreamy streets due to the old buildings (much more than any other German city), the wide streets with green alleys (much more consequent planned and realized by the Prussians than in almost all other cities in the world and one of the main reasons why Berlin is a _really_ green city (green and urban at the same time) with cafes and stuff. also much more modern buildings and so on. And you have masses of water (Berlin is after Hamburg likely the city with the 2nd most bridges in the world) with a lot of - again - true urban lakes with green. One can also have smaller city vibes in spots like Koepenick, Spandau etc... apropos: 'little venice' is also nice (channels just with boats through a lovely neighborhood). You have masses of Parks, two Zoos/Tiergardens, masses of Palaces, Fortress and so on. People who say that Berlin is not nice are actually just copy-pasting stereotypes instead of focusing on the reality. Berlin is a stretched out mix of all kind of impressions, between edgy and beautiful. Much more polycentric. You can have it all. Potsdam,. a bit similar to Munich and Hamburg are more like 'compact' nice city center cities (Hamburg has also some more other nice parts but less than Berlin).
