    I had an aunt that really fell in love with this game. She adored it so much she got me back interested in Shadowgate. We lost her to cancer 8 years ago. *raises a bottle* For Tod Zipnick and my aunt, I hope you both are resting peacefully.

    Shadowgate was one of my favorite games on the NES and one that I played for hours on end. I don't think I ever actually beat it, but it was fun to play and one I remember fondly. Learning about the secret room behind the waterfall in the Mac Version and the tribute to Tod Zipnick was a real treat and I would love to see more videos like this. Taking the time to interview people involved in the development of classic games and learn some of the behind-the-scenes trivia would be a welcome addition to the channel, in my opinion. Thank you for this wonderfully infomative video and stay safe out there!

    Shadowgate's graphics were mind-bending to see on NES back then! Great game, and one that was small enough that you could actually discover the correct path and actions to take without reading a guide. Plus, the music has to be some of the best on the NES, it really creates a vibe.

    • @civic2980
      @civic2980 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree the music is awesome and the move screen sound is icing on that cake. I didnt beat it when it came out but finished it in my teens. Great game and hearing the music makes me want to play again haha.

      It's funny how true your comment is. Feel lucky to have seen the transition from vector graphics to photo realistic. I beat Shadowgate every 10 years, long enough to forget all the solutions on the next playthrough.

      I didn't know that you could select the lit torch as a usable item, so I made all of ten minutes of progress in the game and was then stuck forever. What a pity that my adventure came to a sudden and tragic end. At least I could amuse myself by using the sword to commit suicide.

    1:54 - In Photoshop, use Edit > Layer > Distort on the Shadowgate screenshot later, take each corner of the screenshot and drag it to the appropriate corner of the Mac monitor. Then try changing the blend mode from “Normal” to “Overlay” on the screenshot layer, to integrate it seamlessly into the Mac image. This is my unsolicited Photoshop advise for making realistic screenshot+monitor mock-ups. I don’t know what the commands would be if one is using GIMP instead.

    • @UCanBeatVideoGames
      @UCanBeatVideoGames  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Chaz!
      This episode is much shorter than my usual ones, and shorter episodes naturally get fewer views. It counts as two views if someone watches a video in two parts, so that skews the metrics. I totally expected this one to have fewer views. I'd feel like this did badly if it was like 2 hours long.
      I appreciate the concern, and while I don't know how often I'll have access to do cool interviews, I like making stuff like this and will hopefull get to every so often.

    I absolutely love your regular shows. You're literally my favorite TH-camr, and so I hope you have a long and fulfilling career doing this. But...I do like the occasional change of pace. Shadowgate was one of my favorite games growing up, and I still look back on it fondly, so breaking up the flow in order to do a "deeper" dive into this legendary game really helps to set you apart and above. I appreciate your efforts to go the extra mile.

    You should do "Dark Castle" and "Beyond Dark Castle" from the old Macintosh libraries

    Wow!
    I sure wasn't expecting you to revisit this game to cover this interesting hidden easter egg.
    Let alone get an interview with the developer.
    I'm glad I was wrong :)
    This was a real cool and wholesome video and tribute I think.
    Very nicely done.
    P.S Omg! your dogs are just so adorable

    I've greatly enjoyed all your videos, and this one has been particularly memorable for me. There's something so atmospheric, moody, and evocative about the NES shadowgate music, having owned the game as a kid, The music never fails to bring me back to that place... That unique headspace.
    It was the very first dungeon crawler I ever played, and initiated my lifelong love of this sort of point and click adventure.
    Keep up the Great work!

    I absolutely loved this game as an adolescent teenager! Something really crazy that happened to my friend. He went on vacation to Disney World for a week. When he got back home and popped Shadowgate into his Nintendo he discovered the game had somehow "beaten" itself.

    This game is special to me. My original major friends group, we used to play this on both NES and Mac. It was awesome dying and trying through it

    Been waiting for this one for years.
    Well done.
    We had to call the hot line number in the manual to figure out how to get the key for the front door, after that it was mind twisting deaths.

    Thank you for this, as a fan of your channel from the beginning, these videos are absolutely welcome and very much appreciated and enjoyed. As much as I love the walkthroughs, it's the in-depth history and lore at the beginning I get most excited for. Please make more of these!
