    Just came here to say that the 60 second What We Do In The Shadows intro is amazing. The song is ironic and the imagery tells a funny story of vampires (not) aging throughout the decades! Also Preacher’s intro was genuinely amazing and I was always sad it wasn’t longer bc the little snippet of southern gothic gospel music SLAPPED.

      Hate thr Preacher show, got so much of what was shown in the comics wrong, couldn't take Jessie or Tulip seriously. Cass was practically the only watchable character. The story beats were also really shit too, even changed some stuff and got the pacing terribly wrong. And it cut out a lot of the extra details and character moments and scenes and parts that made thr story iconic. Was so absolutely disappointed.

    Avatar the Last Airbender is not the fanciest intro, but it's a really effective intro for its time. New viewers who caught it midseason will know what the show is about immediately. Not only that, it's memorable, often quoted, parodied and memed.

      @@AaronfRogers Like I said, it's good for it's time. It doesn't work as effectively for today's viewing dynamic. But back then, before streaming services, before binging and your primary way of watching shows is waiting for its scheduled airtime, there's a good chance that a big portion of the audience starts in the middle of the series, not the premiere. And that intro really served that purpose of getting new viewers up to speed.

      Honestly, I like how it just simplistically lays out and recaps the very appealing base lore of the story and world with demonstrations of the elements and pans over the map, personally recounted by a main character's voice over. It boils it down to just compelling info and potential for the story in a way that a completely new viewer could just pick up, and provides vital refreshers/emphasises the main inciting incidents of the conflict.
      And it just looks and sounds very cool and serious for a kids show, it feels mature without being out of a kid's comprehension. Kids know that war is bad, and hurting people for your gain is a villainous thing to do. Understanding genocide and generational abuse is for when those kids grow up to make video essays about Zuko, and probably become very left leaning politically.

      True, though the intros were a part of the show itself, if you skipped them, you were missing a bit of the set up for the episode.
      The "late 90s/early 00s" intro was the best IMO, but that might be that I grew up with that style and they did an amazing job of emulating the era.
      Also the song is a bop.

  • @whamawham645
    @whamawham645 2 ปีที่แล้ว +161

    My two favourite types of intros are probably:
    1) like the Patriot one, where you're like 'yeah this is cute I guess' but it gains more meaning and weight the more episodes you watch, like you see things in a different light (probably best when the intro seems fun and harmless the first time and actually has a sinister tone or sadness behind it later on, without even changing a thing).
    And 2) the non-intros where the title card is kinda built into the scene. Like, the first scene happens and then the characters are like 'Okay let's go' and as they exit the setting the camera kinda zooms out and you can see a sign that was behind them that says the title of the show, or it's in the reflection of the water they're standing near, or one of the characters spills chocolate milkshake or something on the floor before they leave and then we see the title spelled out in the chocolate milk, yanno? Bad examples but I like that kind.

    • @3spond785
      @3spond785 ปีที่แล้ว +3

But my favorite part has got to be how you start recognizing elements that have been there from day one as they get introduced in the show. One of the photos that gets thrown down is of some old guy's hand with a cracked nail. That feeling when you realize it's the hand of the dude from the dndnd episode (which is one of the last few episodes before the four-part finale) is really satisfying.

    Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts does a kind of neat thing. Every episode's cold open ends with the camera panning to the word "Kipo" spelled out in a quasi-diagetic way, like in a pattern of cracks in a wall, or the text on a sign or billboard. Then it match cuts from there to the title card.
    It kind of gives the whole show an air of prophecy, or destiny, like the character's name is written into the fabric of the world. Unfortunately that doesn't really align with the themes of the show, but it's still a fun intro.

    I’m a huge fan of the show Fargo just as a whole, but I absolutely adore how they handle “intros” if you can even call them that. It’s really just an excuse to show the title and get the inspired by true events stuff out of the way.
    I think it’s pulled off so well because of how the show is scored, there’s that great strong musical hook right when the title comes up every time, it makes it feel like “yeah that’s clearly the intro, this is how all the other intros sorta felt” but it doesn’t get so repetitive because the visuals and what they mean and how late in the episode the title appears is different every time, but recognizable.

    Most anime and cartoons have EXCEPTIONALLY good intros. It probably has something to do with the fact it is usually made by the same people as the show, so the tone matches, the music is crafted specifically for the show, and they can use the intro to really stretch the medium of animation in really fun ways. I mean, especially in anime, the theme and theme songs are meant to be thoroughly enjoyed every time, and often the outro is too!
    Some longer intros never skip are Parks and Rec, Big Little Lies, and Community, and i think its because they have theme songs that really set the tone for the show.
    Like, so many of the prestige intro nearly sound the same, because the music is just ~~tension~~. Parks and rec is happy, up beat, and bouncy. Big little lies is an actual song with lyrics, which i miss so very much in intros, and it sets the ~tension~ most prestige intros have but actually shows the core imagery of the series, which is the mothers with their kids. Community also has lyrics, and its not peppy so much as it is snappy, much like the show.
    TLDR: i love long intros most when they arent just tense slow orchestra music that is honestly indiscernible from the rest and the theme song is so important for intros.

    I'm showing my age but I never skipped the intro to the X-Files. Great combo of imagery and music. Also, if the text at the end was anything different than "The Truth is Out There" you knew that some stuff was going to go down that episode. It was rare but super exciting.
    Recently, I really like the super short ones/title cards. Stuff like The Boys, Invincible, Mr. Robot etc.
    I find that with anime or cartoons I rarely skip. Music is usually banging with great visuals (Sailormoon Sailorstars, Revolutionary Girl Utena, 90s X-Men cartoon etc) so there is no reason to skip those.

    Supernatural has always been a guilty pleasure of mine, and I think their intro's we're always really neat. They only ever did little 5-second title cards that changed to match the theme of each season. Plus if they were doing a holiday episode or some other special episode, like the Scooby-Doo episode, there would be a matching title card. There's something like 30 (?) different title cards.

    • @maximeteppe7627

      Yup, the first few times we had somber music over stylized visuals, it was cool. Game of thrones titles had a banger too. It still worked for daredevil: the visuals weren't as relevant, the music slower and less memorable, but it was better than stargate style theme music over corny shots of the actors. At this point, we were still early in this cycle of prestige TV. But it is a cycle: something groundbreaking comes along to push the medium forward, it changed the landscape, but by the time it's the norm we are bored to death.
      It simply is a fact that not all musical theme and/or visual idea can sustain a 90s moodpiece. especially if it's mandatory that the theme music be moody and standard rather than memorable or unique.
      Still, I think that tricks like altering the title sequence as the season progresses can elevate nearly all title sequences. Like imagine that mindhunter had the flashes of bodies dominate more and more, to illustrate the loss of control of the characters and improve that "rising curtain" by gradually rising tension as well. modifying the music, adding instruments or distorting what's there, that could also work wonders, especially in a show that messes with our heads. Obviously, it's a high effort approach, but if you're gonna spend millions into a lavish title sequence, you might as well go all the way.

    The best title sequence I know of is Inside No. 9. The show is framed around the fact that it's _inside_ number 9. one episode has a shoe size which is 9, another has a room number, another has an address. That's their entire intro, and it changes for each episode. Incredible show.

    I really liked how Ozark handled its intro. Starts with the title card with some fading for mood, which takes a few seconds. Then after an opening sequence, another fade in and out of an O with four items in it that will be of varying significance in the episode, which itself takes maybe five or six seconds. Simple, to the point, and merely compliments rather than influences the tone of the show itself.

Same with arrested development, catchy good song, but they do the clever recap combo and throw in a new bit or two to give you something other than a recap. Arrested development does a great job of making you feel like stuff happened last episode. They show you in the recap that stuff happened that wasn’t in the last episode, it makes the audience feel like the characters have depth and experiences outside of what we are viewing, they don’t exist solely to be in each scene. That’s my cup of tea! :)

    Some top intros for me are:
    -The netflix ""series of unfortunate events" - the second or third verse of the intro song is different for every episode, giving a snapshot of what will follow, why where they are sucks, and done in the tone of whatever the bad guy is disguised as that episode.
    -Dexter - for the "zooming in on random objects" theme it's still my favourite. Does a good job of making his morning routine slightly sinister, and bonus points for it going wrong when he's having an off day.

      David Chase wanted a different song every time, which would mean that we're listening to what Tony's listening on the radio coming back home. HBO told him to stick with one song so that it became recognizable.

    • @BowmanMars
      @BowmanMars 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was looking for this comment but the opposite. the song is great but it's waaay too long and adds nothing, similar to the House of Cards examples it's just a bunch of shots of the area they're in. also, I just started watching the show and have skipped it nearly every time so I may be missing something

    • @batorre
      @batorre 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@BowmanMars I think this is probably due to context of when viewed. Sopranos was appointment television -- if you were invested in the show you were parked in front of your TV each week when it first aired. That intro song would serve to get you hyped for the episode, it was part of the ritual of watching the show every Sunday. The failing of the House of Cards intro to me (and its differentiator from Sopranos) is that it's aping Sopranos but without the context of a live simultaneous premiere and airing. It's a streaming show, released in whole seasons, meant to be binged. The Sopranos was an event each week, it was live so you literally couldn't skip it and even with very limited DVR adoption at that time, you never would anyway. The context matters.
      That said, for a newer viewer I can see why streaming it in a binge nowadays it would seem unremarkable.

    I know this video was made months before Arcane premiered, but man does that series have a killer intro. It's beautifully and thoughtfully made and the music is simply perfect. I never once considered skipping it; in fact, I would get excited whenever it started, because it was just that good, and it always got me hyped for the episode. It also never felt too long.
    And fwiw, I really love the intro to The Haunting of Hill House. Sets the tone visually, and the music is just beautiful. I also like how it ends by focusing on the red room, the importance of which becomes more apparent as you keep watching.
    Great video! :-)

    The old MacGyver intro was pretty great. Catchy music, explosion with the title, stereo where available. But also like, it starts with just his hands doing things, then action scenes, THEN you get to see his face when the actors name shows up and then you see a bunch of scenes of him being charming and then some more of that with some more action and like, yeah, that's the show. And it's fun to recognise the clips they use.

    I always liked the Gotham intro, not really “prestige tv” but it definitely took itself seriously (maybe a bit too seriously), it just had quick little floating letters over a skyline with some police siren sounds and lights, I’ve always liked the quick ones that don’t interrupt anything (and yes for whatever reason despite being 10 seconds or less it has a skip intro button too, ??)

      Dexter's intro serves a very important story purpose. It shows Dexter being a regular-ass guy. You know, exactly the thing he isn't. He's doing regular guy things like tying his shoes, eating breakfast, flossing his teeth, and seeing that juxtaposition of ordinary things being so damn creepy reveals the character better than any other intro possibly could for that show.
      And then Dexter new blood went the two second title card route. Such a shame.
