      I remember having to explain to my sister that the ending resolved nothing. The whole system they're under is a (admittedly bad) solution of what to do to prevent runaway population growth in a world with cheap, perfect, universal, anti-aging tech. The solution is at least better than in the short story 2BR02B. It would be okayish if not for the very intentional economic disparity. The main character at the end is insistent on tearing it down and letting everyone live indefinitely, but its obvious that can't be sustained. He offers no alternate solution ultimately.

    I think once you get out of the poorest zone it gets hard to calculate the true value of time because the higher time zones are priced to keep the poor out. They put a toll by each time zone and then even once you get there, you’d find things are 10x more expensive than they were back home. It’s less like going state to state and more like moving from an impoverished country to a flourishing one, but done on purpose.

      With this analysis we can also know for certain that the price of a ps5 is simply the same as it is in our normal world, the masses are still the consumers, the only actual divide is that there is a distinct middle and upper class in between the social elite in this world, in reality we are all far closer in living conditions, even millionaires, to billionaires. The price of a ps5 could be just called to the price of a beer, which we already know is 4 minutes using the same beer to ps5 ratio a ps5 would cost 6 hours

    I think the biggest handicap you gave yourself was using an invariable currency as a comparison. In the UAE the AED has a similar sort of social flexibility in the slums exchanging 5AED is based on things like material need, so it can go far. Its still just being used as a facilitator of barganing. My labor is worth x their product is worth y. I trade my labor for their product. But once you get to the highrises, bartering isn’t important anymore, status is, and the maintenance of status doesn’t need money to be worth anything. They own everything and could change the value overnight so it doesn’t really matter what things cost. Obscene prices only exist to price out the poor. A poor person’s 5 durim is literally worth nothing. 5 durim gets you nowhere so a sandwhich needs to cost 1000d in order to be worth it to consume

    Certain items might be scarce for whatever reason in the film world that makes a direct price comparison impossible. Maybe milk/cheese is super hard to come by and so a grilled cheese is like getting bald eagle eggs or something.

  • @Dukefazon
    @Dukefazon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Can't really argue with the conclusion. Maybe I can. The movie is set in the future so the PS5 is probably retro gaming in those days and depending of the curve of the price of old stuff, it can be much cheaper (like PS3s today) and really expensive (like NES, SNES, N64 or GameCubes). And you didn't take inflation into consideration, so when you bring future money to todays time or take todays PS5 price to the future, you need to adjust to inflation. And yeah, I just had a conversation with a guy 2 days ago about the PS5 not having any game that would make me want to buy the console yet.
