    One thing I’ve learned from watching hundreds and hundred of motorbike videos is that most motorbike accidents/incidents are due to the rider.
    This is one of the only channels that actually points that out and I’m glad you do, thank you.

      I've been using them to give me an idea of common hazards for cycling and it's pretty helpful even if I am riding at slow speed. Funnily enough some of these skills you pick up from cruising on a skateboard in cities, everytime I skate and get close to a junction I slow myself down just enough that I can stop my board and have enough of a run off to not get into the road. Has saved me a few times from drivers.

      I agree with your wording but am confused at where it came from. I stated that most accidents are due to the rider, I never stated the rider didn't take responsibility or use due diligence, I stated the obvious in a basic manor.
      As far as the car being at fault, I seriously disagree with that perspective. Had a car not been there but a wall was, the fault would then fall onto the wall, or maybe a power pole? Riders that act this idiotic when riding will cause their own accident and be at fault for the accident, the auto is just an object used to accomplish said act of stupidity, in other words the car is a prop. Faulting a prop makes no sense, the prop had no control over the circumstances, so it being where it was makes in not at fault, just present.

    • @rational_biker
      @rational_biker 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would say it is difficult, and probably unhelpful, to ascertain the percentages of who is at fault. There are however common elements which is what this channel is about
      1) Car drivers not seeing bikes → Car drivers fault
      2) Bikes not riding at an appropriate speed → Biker's fault
      I was taught assume every other drive is an A*hole and ride accordingly

    I’ve been riding for 25 years. I basically assume everyone is gonna do something stupid, and they usually don’t disappoint. I’ve gotten to be a very good reader of car body language and predictive riding. In the car with my wife I’ll say “that lady is gonna cut off the red pickup and merge without looking” and then when it happens she’s like “how could you have known that?” Good riders have a 6th sense and are constantly scanning and computing the information around them - where should I be, where can I go if the SHTF, what is this nitwit in a Prius doing, it’s time to create some space between me and this duct taped Maxima, etc. Always processing, never trusting! Stay safe out there!

    • @TTFerdinand
      @TTFerdinand ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Experience, man, it's invaluable. Every other driver is a potential killer - but so am I. My wife in the other seat sometimes goes like "here's that statue over there" or "here's that big tree" and I say I've never seen it. "But how come you've never seen it, you drive past it all the time!" Because I'm watching the damn road when I'm driving, honey...

      I have been riding 55 years. And drove a semi for decades..same thing.. I don't drive safely because "it can't happen" but because IT CAN! It isn't that everyone else is stupid always, or certain cars. Thinking like that can get you killed. But a) everyone makes mistakes.. even you. b) it ISN'T about you.. they are wrapped up in their own world. Concentrating on THEIR problems and big big clue. YOU CANT CHANGE THAT!
      Thinking " that idiot in the prius" is just like thinking "that idiot on the motorcycle".

    Honest question here, is there some sort of design flaw with the Prius that blocks the driver's vision or creates a larger blind spot? Or is it just the fact that bad drivers tend to buy the Prius because it is cheap? Why is it always a Prius that's the potato on the road?

    There was a popular rear window sticker in the 90's in Australia on club cars (Holden/Ford V8s, Skylines, Silvias, WRXs) that said "Ban low performance drivers, not high performance cars". Prius drivers (as a whole - always exceptions) clearly fit the former.

    Here in WA it is drilled in during driver training that when makeing a left onto a road with a two-way left turn lane the driver should pull into the TWLT lane first, then merge with traffic. Also, bikers and all drivers need to be aware that it's called a two-way left turn lane for a reason, other motorists may want to make left in the opposing way, so be cautious when entering that lane.

    Yes Dan, phones too. Speed also of course. You can't watch the road, your environment, traffic signs and signals, and look at your phone. Phones cause accidents in cars and bikes, either yours or theirs. It is dangerous to be LOOKING at your phone at all, no matter what you are driving, but more so on a bike because you have so much more to watch out for. The only reason you'd ever need your phone on your handlebars is for GPS. But GPS has audio too. It only takes a fraction of a second of distraction to give you a terrible day.

      As a daily street rider since late 80s here in So Cal... I can tell you as you do more streetriding you'll learn those two things are what will keep you alive... If you're hanging out in groups of cars or being passed by cars vs moving faster through traffic youre asking for trouble. Same with splitting, if you're sitting between cars in stop and go traffic vs moving past them through the sides you're looking for trouble. Do both smart obviously, but BOTH will keep you alive on the street.

    I have a thing where, after riding for 26 years almost daily, I look at the driver rather than the car, and 90% of the time, you know that the driver is going to pull out in front of you, or at least do something stupid.
    I find that if instead of staying static in a line towards that kind of of junction, if you move about a bit in your lane, the driver has more chance to see you, rather than just a dot moving closer in his/her eyes.
    you should always move yourself into the best position possible to be seen by the cager.

      just plan ahead and expect everyone might try to kill you. If you find you often get close calls the issue is you. slow it down and cover your options when your approaching potential dangers like people waiting to pull out. dont sit in cars blind spots or next to cars in dual lanes sit ahead or behind so you have options.

    I guess that those people like the first dude with so many similar close calls must think that they're not doing anything wrong and that it's everybody else that have to change their behavior. And that's the key, as we can not change how other people drive around it is our responsability to keep ourselves safe by taking into account what others might do wrong (or right).

      I’m torn on this. When I ride my pedal bike I do so 100% in compliance with all the rules and regulation set forth. But the motorist really do seem willing to risk my life if it could save them 5 seconds. I’ve got scars from vans thinking it’s ok to filter traffic if the traffic is a vulnerable road user. Daily I have cars roll up beside me and swerve at me. I’ve had coffe rubbish spit. All sorts thrown at me. And the honking/arm flailing and verbal assault. Every day. I only travel 3 miles. And not a single day goes by without some incident. And I can tell you exactly what their problem is.They don’t know how to use the road. They don’t know how I as a cyclist am in accordance with the regulation supposed to use the road. They think I shouldn’t exist and if they take me out it ain’t gunna hurt them.

    Hey Dan, I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate you, and what you do. I got my endorsement in July of 2021. Before and after I did I watched your videos almost religiously. Fast forward to 2 months ago, I dumped my bike for the first time coming around a curve to a stop sign. The guy that helped me pick up my bike said it looked like I hit a patch of gravel that was in the road, and that made sense at the time, but looking back that gravel was from my fall. The truth is I was probably going a bit faster than I should have been😅, and I hit the rear break too hard, then low-sided into a curb. The bike whipped me off, and fractured my knee in the process. My back landed in the gravel, and the back of my head slammed into the concrete. Luckily I was wearing my gear, so my knee took the worst of the damage. I say luckily because I've taken to only wearing it during the cold season, a mistake I won't soon repeat. I watched a lot of safety videos, but yours really stood out. You always find a way to bring the root of the problem back to the biker, and so I instinctually did the same rather than just trust that the gravel had been the cause. It allowed me to learn from my mistakes, and work on improving those areas. So now I'm back. To refresh my memory, and perhaps learn something new. It's because of this that I wanted to say thank you. For giving me the mindset to stay calm, and evaluate my situation.
    Much love from North Phoenix

    Hi Dan. Thanks for posting these videos. I always wanted to ride but life and things got in the way. Finally decided to get my licence, and in this part of Canada you must attend a driving school. I appreciate all of your advice and insights, and will add these to what I learn in the closed courses and on the road. Also, I have driven an 18 wheeler through most of the USA and Canada, and I agree 100% with you that honking your horn is a wasted movement. I was always looking for ways to avoid issues rather than honking. (Except when there’s a kid on the side of the road pumping his/her arm in the universal honk signal…it’s required by law that you honk at that moment, isn’t it?) Finally, I agree 724% about the Prius drivers, the Prii as you said, no matter where you go they all drive the same way…why? Lol.
    Again, thanks for posting and for the great educational and safety material that you share with new and seasoned drivers alike.

    I’m a rather conservative HD rider and it has kept me alive for a very long time!
    I see a LOT of riders here who just simply go too fast, don’t give enough cushion between themselves and other vehicles, and seem too focused on getting from one position to another while failing to properly examine the hazards in between.
    Drivers and cell phones are not going away so your point on rider speed is dead on so it is always a waste of your time to lecture a driver on their use. This is less time that you’re paying attention.
    Lastly, I realize lane splitting is legal and accepted in many locations but I avoid it most of the time. More power to the riders who do it.

Once it was the suspension was improperly tuned leaning to much forward. 2nd the front tire was shot. 3rd time it was because the front forks were not properly aligned when the tire was changed. 4th time I hit a huge bump. And each time was very brief. Even the bump I hit only gave me a wobble for 1 second tops. So I'm a firm believer if you get the wobbles something mechanical is causing or increasing them.

    The @20:28 turn lane. Both are at wrong as the Turn Lane is for turning, not traveling. You can use it for merging as long as you do not travel. Can only travel in the turn Lane to turn in at the next access point or to pull into the next open slot in the Traveling Lane or Lanes. Both are doing it wrong here as both are traveling in the Turning Lane.

    17:10 Picture this it happened to me: It was a hair-raising moment that could rival any Hollywood action scene. I was blazing my way up Cottonwood Pass, leaving Taylor Park in the dust, perched atop my high-octane supermoto, clocking speeds of 70 to 90 miles per hour. But here's the kicker - instead of a mundane guardrail, I was flirting with the edge of a precipitous drop-off, with a mere 3 inches of margin for error riding the white line.
    Just when things couldn't get more intense, a formidable pickup truck hauling a colossal 3-axle 5th wheel trailer came barreling around a blind corner in my lane. To add a touch of cinematic drama, the sun was conveniently positioned behind me, casting a blinding glare right into the eyes of the unsuspecting driver of the 5th wheel.
    But, in the heat of that heart-pounding moment, my skills morphed into superhero-level reflexes, and it felt as though time itself had hit the brakes. It was a breathtaking display of precision riding and a heart-pounding testament to my mastery of the open road.
    By far the scariest moment on any ride I have done. But I survived and got myself out. That clip gave me goosebumps.

    When you reference vehicle non-possessive singular or plural AND possessive singular (our Prius or my Prius), it is correct to use the proper noun of the model such as, "watch out for Prius when you are motorcycling" or "I really love Supra, it's my favorite car." It does get confusing when it comes to possessive plural be cause you don't want to say "our Prius" because it's not clear if it is a co-owned Prius or a group of them, so I guess, "our Priuses" Also a friendly reminder that Hyundai is pronounced like sunday.

    haaaaard disagree on the phone comment. Seen plenty of people fail to understand that the car in front was stopped in a dense traffic area, low speed, and hitting it.
    Phone is a serious distraction. It is entirely possible to go lower than the speed limit, and hit something because you're distracted. Could be anything else, sure. My mom crashed her car while picking up some random stupid item. Phones are just more common and require more time. They're absolutely a huge danger.

    The company I work for is very Health & Safety concious, they have a saying 'Nothing is so important that is cannot be done safely'. I keep this in mind when I am riding, its not important how quickly I get somewhere, its not important about getting ahead of traffic, what is most important is that I ride safely and protect my health and that of others around me. We all of a responsibility as a road user, be that pedestrian or truck driver, to use the road appropriately and not endanger any one else but also if someone messes up you are always ready for it by being cautious unlike a lot of riders in the MotoStars videos.

    I hope a lot of people heard the section at 12:40 The mental blind spot aka the scotoma. Our minds are normally fixated on specific things we see on a normal basis and our mind simply creates blind spots for what we consider unnecessary information. However as you stated you can undo most of that by learning how to spot differences or changes that are not common, it is a huge difference when you think of a car driver verses a bike rider, as someone on a bike be it a bicycle, motorcycle, scooter ect You typically do not want to have these mental blind spots that is how a lot of these crashes happen. Reality being what it is. Yes you are not always at fault, but As DanDan has said on many occasions that we are responsible for ourselves and how we react and how we ride.
    Personally when I drive a car or ride a bike I cannot be anything other than hyper focused on any and everything around me, the whole keep your eyes on the road at all times will get you killed. Never get tunnel vision cars are called death traps for a reason same with bikes, if turning down some music or paying just a bit more attention to avoid a crash is well, WELL worth it IMO.

    Dan I have a question. So I was going to go on a group ride and someone in the group sad to everyone to make sure we stay together, stagger, etc. then he said that if the first rider gets the green light everyone should stay together and keep going because if someone stops at the red light they could “cause an accident”. I looked it up, there is no state in this country that says you can run a red light or stop sign on a motorcycle just because you are in a group and the first bike got the green. In fact I found an article that addressed this and it said explicitly that you have to stop for red lights/stop signs even if riding in a group. What are your thoughts?

  • @schneir5
    @schneir5 ปีที่แล้ว

    10:33 I wouldn't have made that left turn, even in my car, let alone on a motorcycle! Unless I have a green left arrow at a big intersection like that, I won't risk it because people are always turning into whatever lane they want, rather than the one they're supposed to use. Plus, people change their mind about turning, so one of the people in the right turn lane in front of us could decide to go straight instead. I just took the motorcycle class yesterday, so I'm still brand new, but I've been driving a Miata for about the last 7 years, and I think that's been good practice for when I do get a motorcycle because I've had to be so defensive with it since pretty much any other car on the road will demolish it in a crash. Also I'm already familiar with using the clutch and shifting gears, and being careful with throttle control to avoid oversteer.

    It's interesting to me that you constantly have to hightlight the open lane pattern phenomenon. As a German riding on the Autobahn where you're supposed to stay to the right at all times, unless you overtake, it becomes such an instinct to realize when people slightly swerve or mean to overtake as their lane closes in.

    @ 10:36 Dan, I've seen that before. In fact, I saw that this morning at 0600, as I was riding into work on the DC beltway near the Pentagon. I had a guy do that exact same thing to me. It pissed me off, but I didn't get crazy and do anything irrational because of it. I was doing about 70mph and this numbnuts chose to do that to me as he approached from behind me in the middle lane as I was in the left lane. He didn't want to miss his exit which he had to catch from the left lane. The thing that really pissed me off was that he felt the need to cut me off when behind me in the left lane the nearest car was at least 7 car lengths behind. All he had to do was slow down and get behind me so as not to risk my safety. It wasn't a case of he didn't know I was there either, I have de-baffled exhaust, LED lighting front to back, LED fork lights, and he approached me alongside from the rear in the middle lane while I was in the left and then decided to overtake me while he was in the middle lane so as to cut me off to get the left. I was behind a car in the left lane approximately 3 car lengths behind following. Folks ride carefully that was just another reminder some drivers don't give two craps about our safety out here on bikes. The important thing is to keep your emotions in check while riding and not doing what the guy in the video did. I applied my brakes and let the idiot in so he could make his exit and moved on with my day. Safe riding everyone!

    Motorists have difficulty determining distance and overtaking time of passing motorcycles because of the difference in vehicle frontal area of cars and motorcycles. They (particularly little old ladies) cannot determine the speed of the approaching motorcycle and calculate the required buffer to perform a lane change. They may see the motorcycle but they are not aware it is actually approaching and they fail to make a safe decision. The average motorist needs at least three seconds to recognize and react safely to the presence of a cyclist. A cyclists must always assume they are unseen in every instance for that first three seconds of every encounter. The alternative is accident, injury or death.

    In 12 years what's prevented accidents. Braking, slowing down, steering, observations, good tyres, correct lane positioning. What has never prevented an accident or near accident using the damn horn. By the time drivers hear and register the horns location its already too late for them to process and act on that information.
    The only time you should ever use a horn is to let people know you are there and that is well in advance of any potential hazard.
