- When we look at comics, manga, or webtoons, all we see are the final products: fully colored and inked pages. Readers barely think about the rough drafts or the planning that went into the making of those pages. Creators, on the other hand, dream about seeing the process so they can replicate it in their artistic journey. In this video, I will explain when storyboards and thumbnail sketches should be used and going over their importance!

I feel like the storyboarding is the most important thing visually in manga. When you see everything before you, it becomes concrete and you’ll understand everything a whole lot better.

When I was a kid I used to watch sloppy fight so my best friend and I used to draw a shit ton of scenes in a composition book and now I’m older wanting to make something I was trying to figure out how to create that fluidity and apply that in a professional way

I realized that I've been spending way too much time on my storyboards lately. I didn't even think of thumbnailing beforehand. I can already feel the process going quicker! Especially since I like doing planning traditionally and only move to digital for the final product
Also, I conpletely agree with keeping your storyboards. I have a desk drawer full to the brim of old storyboards. There are so many old, unfinished projects in there, as well as some finished ones. When I get stuck I like to look through them. You never know what can inspire you
VERY TRUE. I was also the type of artist to do storyboards and then final drafts. I didn't hear about thumbnail sketches until I met other comic artists and started learning more about film and animation
Having tiny sketches that are so small you can see every page at once is a HUGE time saver, plus it's a lot less commitment if you want to scrap pages entirely

Not sure if this has been asked or not, you might get it all the time, but what app/software do you use for this step? I've been writing a comic book for a while now, and I'm about at the stage where I need to put it all on a page to see how it works out but idk where to even start for all the paneling/thumbnailing/storyboarding
I personally use Clip Studio Paint for all of my work. It is currently the industry standard for comics and manga. If you want a free alternative, Medibang Jump Paint is a great choice! Medibang also has a mobile app SPECIFICALLY for storyboards!

Long story short yes. Obviously you can do whatever you want, but if you ever work with a publisher or an editor they'll require you to make them. They don't have to be that detailed and are just blueprints others can use to see if everything makes sense. Storyboarding is one of my favorite parts of the process because you can plan page layouts without wasting so much time detailing a page, only to scrap it later.

@@Alex-yr8iy Storyboards are just rough drafts. I've seen people use stick figures for their storyboards. As long as they're clear enough for you and a reader to understand what's happening, you're solid! Good luck!

@@Alex-yr8iy If you want to get it adapted to animation then yeah you definitely need to get used to storyboarding. The only way for something to become animated is by a studio picking it up from a publisher. So at the publishing phase, your editor would require you to make them. I used to hate drawing storyboards when I was younger too because it feels like drawing the same thing twice. My advice to you would be to set a realistic goal for yourself, like 2 storyboard pages a day, and have each chapter be 20 pages. I also recommend just keep learning in your downtime, I'm always watching drawing tutorials and writing tips and animation behind the scene videos. I still don't get why I should do the thumbnail first. To me the thumbnail would be tge book cover so I'm guessing that I just don't know what a thumbnail is. If someone could help me out I'd appreaciate it. Complete Newby here.
Thumbnails are like TINY rough drafts, if you imagine a normal 8x10 sheet of paper, then imagine squeezing 30 "pages" on it. Each rectangle representing a page would only be like an inch or 2
Thumbnails are so small because the goal is to get your ideas out as quickly as possible while not caring about "how good it looks"
Storyboards are usually bigger, if you imagine a standard 8x10 paper, then you would turn it horizontally and fold it in half. Each 8x10 paper would represent 2 pages
So if you wanted to make 30 pages storyboarded you would need 15 sheets of paper. Storyboards are usually more detailed because an editor usually looks at them and asks you to make changes
It's important to keep your sketches loose though because you might be asked to redraw multiple pages. Just sketch the details that are important to get your ideas across

I think you got that quote backwards, some comic artists skip the script phase and go straight to the thumbnails. THAT is what I believe I said, because some comic artists can use outlines instead to save time
Wasting time refers to writing out a 60 page google doc script when you could do the same thing in a 2 page google doc outline!

@@AOA.UNIVERSE yes! and chapter outlines and page outlines, some comic artists can get away with just using those after planning out their story, those types of creators usually figure out the dialogue during the storyboard phase

Buy physical comics and records and stuff seems kinds just forced at this point, more like a "look at how in the scene I am" kind of thing, like it's a badge to own all the stuff,
I used to have a bunch of stuff but I realized how dumb it was to buy any of it so I emptied my room and just have my desk to study and enjoy things at,

I got many stories and ideas but my only problem holding me back is what I don't get at all how do I need how many pannels I need per page and what type of pannels I should use
