    Jotaro Kujo is a great example of a character design. Pretty much every iteration wears slick pants, jeans, and hat torn at the back. Though pretty much designs from JoJo's Bizzare Adventure are impressive, especially the stands.
    I will say that it is helpful to also learn character design from your favorite authors. For example, in Naruto various genin ninja wear headbands in their own unique way.

    Mineta, IMO, is not a bad character design. Say what you want about his character, but aside from his pervy comedic stance, every obvious feature has meaning. He’s small, used to convey how he was, at first, extremely cowardly for an aspiring hero. His hair is the way it is due to his quirk, which is literally making balls from his hair. The expression he has signifies him when he’s not being an absolute pervert: kind of confused on situations, and also has an air of denseness and intelligence. It is said that Mineta is among THE smartest kids in the school (Aizawa himself) so his face having this subtle air of slightly knowing what he’s doing is what solidifies him as a good character design.

  • @forgettableotaku
    @forgettableotaku 2 ปีที่แล้ว +47

    Great video guys!!! This will be really helpful for making my manga as I'm in the *oh snap I need to design my characters stage
    I'm not sure what my favourite character design is overall but one design I find impressive is Makoto Naegi from Danganronpa. Naegi fits into the everyman trope and is intended to be that One Generic Guy TM and this is reflected in his brown hair, which is typical for the everyman (technically it could be black as well but I tend to see light brown used more often). However, despite this Naegi stands out from other Danganronpa characters and is recognisable, which I find pretty nice for a character of his nature.
    Also just a side note- I am sick of articles of "bad anime character designs" slapping every Yu-Gi-Oh! protagonist in the list as a big group just because they have "unrealistic hair" or reflect the "spot the protagonist challenge". It's like yeah, it's intentional to reflect the audience, ensure they stand out and to reflect the supernatural elements of the plot- it's not inherently bad because no one has hair like that. No one is pretending the designs resemble real hair, and just because they are distinct doesn't automatically make it bad. This is also why I was glad you mentioned Yu-Gi-Oh! because it's frustrating because there is no consideration for the intent- and other series like Beyblades do a similar thing.

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Thanks for taking the time to check this video out Yazmin! I'm glad it could help! I also really like Naegi's design. Similarly I'm also a fan of Hajime in DR2 was also meant to the the average guy TM. I think those protagonist designs work because the DR artist is SO GOOD at exaggeration and created a cast of REALLY flashy people. There were so many complicated designs that the simple design stood out
      I am actually a big fan of Yugioh's designs. I especially loved the aesthetic of 5Ds. I wish I said more about it in this video. I had no clue people hated on their hair so much. Every anime has obnoxious hair so it never bothered me too much

    • @forgettableotaku
      @forgettableotaku 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@MonitorComics i agree that Hinata is also effective in standing at as the average guy TM and danganronpas style is really good for handling its last large cast.
      And yeah, I remember ranting to a friend over this list of bad character designs that didn't even single out a yugioh character it judt said that all the protagonists are bad and their reasoning made me cringe. And yeah, anime is known for crazy hair so it's a weird critique.

    The most frustrating part for me to deal with is mostly the redesigning stage. It gets so exhausting changing the character design over and over again. I have this one character I'm in the works of doing but I am absolutely floored with the amount of revisions I did (it was about 8 redesigns because in the initial design I was gonna work with consistency would be at stake). I needed this video so much.

    • @MonitorComics

      VERY TRUE! I'm super glad to hear this video could help! You make some VERY REAL points! I'm guilty of rushing the process a bit and creating a character that is hard to draw consistently. It's a bit late for me to change the design since I am working on a published comic, but I NOW KNOW the struggle LOL. As exhausting as it is to keep revising, you are on the right path! Don't give up and best of luck!!

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts! I agree, Horikoshi has created some great character designs. However, I wouldn't say any creator or work is perfect, MHA included. My opinion is subjective, but I personally don't think Mineta has a good design. It's completely valid for you or others to disagree, the design does have functionality and logic as you said, but it just isn't my cup of tea. There are plenty of people on both sides of the spectrum

      @BBkiny 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@MonitorComics Yes I do agree his work isn't perfect but I just meant he knows what he's doing! I do respect your opinion but I do also believe that it's not because it doesn't look pretty to you that it's necessarily a badly made design. I also find it more on the ugly side but I can't deny the fact that the ideas behind it are very good and unique. Either way it was still a great video! Keep up the good work

  • @s3studios597
    @s3studios597 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    Cool video. I know you're talking specifically about comics, but I can't help but look at it in a more general sense, especially since you brought up Arcsys (a game dev). For example, you mention, avoiding complex designs, but that's only an issue for drawing. If you're working on something like a 3D video game or even a CG show, then super detailed designs are a non-issue. What is a problem, however, is something like Dizzy from Guilty Gear with a shit ton of moving parts. Both of her wings can turn into people and have their own animations. Drawing that may not be a big deal, but animating it just sounds like an absolute nightmare. There's also Genshin where the playable characters are all very detailed, but outside of one or two flowing bits, there aren't a whole bunch of moving parts
    Then even with comics/drawings, there's the matter of context. Is it a weekly comic? Monthly? Irregular? Is it a character that appears regularly or rarely? What about Visual Novels? Hell, you might not even be drawing a comic or anything like that, and the character is just something you use in random drawings.

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thanks for taking the time to share all of that! You make some great points! While my videos are titled "for comics and manga," I do try to make them relevant for other mediums like game design, animation, novel writing etc. The majority of my audience is comic or manga creators though so I target my videos towards them. I completely agree with your points about design for games vs comics, especially with moving parts for games and deadlines! Personally,. I LOVE detailed designs in video games, but I couldn't imagine drawing them consistently

    Great video, you managed to cover a lot of very different topics concisely and with enough depth that no topic felt overly rushed or was too vague or surface level to be useful. There's a lot involved in book covers so it's not an easy topic to address in one video.
    I don't have a set favourite manga cover because there are so many really good ones, but one series that has really cool manga covers that is not too well known is Mashle. Mashle uses bold colours and creates the look of being different spellbooks with an elipse on the front cover for the illustrations. This works to create a consistent look that stands out on the shelf. The use of a set space to place characters rather than the typical background with a character means that there are a lot of options for a variety of compositions, often with a lot of characters. It also deviates from the 2000s Shonen Jump style as if you look at many series from the 90s and 2000s from this magazine the covers all share similar numbering elements (think Hunter x Hunter, Naruto, Bleach, Black Cat, Hikaru no Go etc.).
    A series that I'm not as fond of the covers for is My Hero Academia. Don't get me wrong, each cover is individually amazing and off the top of my head I don't dislike any of them, however there is very little cohesion and the covers don't match with different pallete types and styles being employed for different volumes. A great example of this is the contrast between volume 19 and 20. Volume 19 has a pastel pink background and simplified colouring for the background characters in this nice cutesy, feminine style and then volume 20 is dark with dramatic expressions. I am fairly certain this is due to Horikoshi's series being heavily inspired by Western comic books, with volume 9 being heavily inspired by Spiderman and given the influence on the series as a whole, but I personally find it can look a bit messy and I prefer it when the covers look like they were designed to match or form a set.

    Haven't watched the video, but good character design is just intent imo. Its about having meaning behind why a character looks the way they do and how that serves them in the world space they're in. Even if the intent is to look cool, there's still meaning into why they look cool, because there's a world they exist in. I just think alot of people mix mash cool shit they see with no rhyme or reason, which is ok as concepts, but rarely ever works as characters

    In defense of the consistency issue for HunterXHunter, the artist has chronic health issues and adding a decline on top of that resulted in some chapters being very rushed and messy. He did later make better versions of the same panels for the volume releases, but the Shonen jump magazine releases were rushed due to deadlines.
    However, I can still see the validity in the example; it's good to be mindful of choosing a design you can handle drawing over and over again, but also something you can handle drawing when you may not feel well but have no choice but to draw anyway because of a deadline. Pick something you can enjoy drawing on a good day, but something you can hopefully handle on a bad day too.

    4:27 So in other words art is mostly about intent, a character is representation of ideas combined into one thing, designs that I personnally dislike are one that make characters for appeal over their story, Which while it does make the intent, it overall makes the character less intersting to want to care about Because Just like in Real life how you look decides if a door is open for you and you are what lets you stay inside.
    There are Arent really bad character designs, because of how subjective that is, people can see different characters as intersting than you might agree with, but objectively those designs are less facinating, like a low skill floor to understand but too low of a ceiling to care.

    The Akuma no Hana designs personally are some of the best change the anime did to the manga. They not only did made one of the most unique looking anime but they made all the designs a bit more ugly, a bit more realistic facial features, the small eyes especially stood out for me. They amplify the story told soooo much more because it is about feeling real. It is about foot breaking the immersion and yea this comment already too long shot yea here ya go

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts! You make some great points! Aku No Hana definitely had a darker realistic story. In my opinion, the live action route may have done it more justice than an anime adaptation. I personally haven't watched the official live action, bc most live action anime tend to be bad but you know what I mean haha. I personally liked the rotoscope of Aku No Hana and Ping Pong The Animation bc like you said it was something different. People are so accustomed to the kawaii and pretty "anime look" that they see everything else as "bad." It's sad how much hate both series get for their artistic decisions

    • @astrobollo
      @astrobollo ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right! The realistic and more somber depiction of the characters in the Aku No Hana anime really gave them something unique, gave them life! Unlike the manga designs that are the most boring and generic manga/anime designs that you can see everywhere.

    hey man so im making a manga called the curse of raijin its about a samurai which was cursed by the thunder god raijin with memory loss and is forced to wear his armour and sword the man was cursed by raijin for using raijins sword for his own mortal desires,the main character has lightning powers also there is a power system where people can achieve supernatural powers using a scroll technique those scroll techniques are only able to be used once the person trying to use it has mastered their martial art but there are also cursed scrolls which were banned across the world for being way to dangerous and agressive not only causing damage to its user but a being overall destructive.the main protagonist is the cursed man a farmer boy and his pet a woman and a budhist monk.the world is an alternate version of earth where in ancient asia china has waged war against the rest of asia and the events of the story happen during the war .because of the war the beijing pact is formed a group of the main villains which all have their personal reasons for joining there is nakahi which is a bald and lean chinese man which was kicked from his home island for warshipping a death god his curse scroll allows him the ability to light what his blood touched on fire also granting him the ability to be imune to fire he is covered in tattoos from his whole body which with effort he can hide at times he is the budhist monk which is traveling alongside the main group he first apears in the village that the protagonist and farmer are resting at kidnapping the son of yasuke which is a known hero in japan and the protagonists idol thats what begins the story the mc wants to save yasukes son because he believes he has answers to who he is ,then the main villain is yasukes son whos motivation behind why hes in the beijing pact is that he wanted to use a cursed scroll to gain power in order to defeat china and save asia but the scroll started to eat his soul and in the final fight when mc kills yasukes son he has a moment of clarity thanking him for ending his suffering (idk where to fit all of the information this is all a very quick version and run down of everything) then theres tatsuo an the brother of the head of the martial arts temple he can levitate and shoot purple energy beams out of his finger he was sealed into a scroll by his brother when he found out tatsuo was leading essentialy a cult like group which used cursed scrolls he joined the beijing pact after accidentaly being summoned by nakahi ,theres joshua he is an insane man which is convinced that he is jesus he used several curse scrolls to become more christ like but that only drove him more insane and turned him into an abomination with several mouths all over his body and a big one going from his left leg to his right nipple his powers are regeneration and superhuman physical abilities he is the second strongest standing only behind yasukes son,theres also a karate guy but i still havent wrote alot about him i have badly drawn concept art tho lol.theres several characters the main group will encounter on their journey like the legens of the east west and south they are 3 swordsmen a woman named kaguya she is buff and carries four swords she can grow two extra glowing spirit hands on comand then theres alistair a western swordsman carrying a crimson samurai sword he has a prosthetic hand and has wind powers the last one is yufei an archer who wears a mask his power is converting his martial arts spiritual energy into explosive arrows. the mc met farmer in a village where he was looking for rations the boy wants to be accepted by the mc due to his lack of a father figure later when they are both staying at a city they get ambushed by a ninja trying to kill the samurai she gets caught and is interigated she refuses but then we find out about her wanting to kill the samurai to prove that she can be a good fighter even tho she has only one eye she joins the crew and on their way to the martial arts temple they meet a budhist monk which is just nakahi but in disguise they all set off on their journey together .so that is the story so far i wish to get some constrictive critiscism and questions

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! That depends on the artist you are hiring! Some commission artists allow for a few edits during the sketching phase. It might be harder to request changes when they are on the inking stage, and unlikely during the coloring phase. If you tell them in advance that you would like multiple iteration designs, they may be more than likely to agree, however it may increase the price for the drawing. Hope that helps!

      Of course! The sooner you begin, the quicker you will improve! I'm 23 right now, been drawing since I was a kid too! A lot of professionals have similar stories! Keep it up!

      Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment and checking out the video! When making thumbnails, you have to be a bit clickbaity to get people to click on the video. I tend to choose popular or flashy characters. For this video, I wanted a "fanservice" type design and thought Kentaro Yabuki's art would be perfect. I loved his art for Black Cat and To Love Ru, but settled on Ayakashi Triangle since it is his currently published series! Hope that helps!
