    the actor who played Sam's gay former teammate is Carlos Brown, also known as Alan Autry, former Green Bay Packers quarterback and later the mayor of Fresno, California.

    One of the biggest surprises from an actor I ever heard was Ted Danson admitting that playing Sam Malone terrified him. Apparently he is _nothing_ like this guy, and was riven with doubt about whether he could do it, and then whether he was doing it right. That just amazed me, because Sam is one of the most natural sitcom characters I've seen - his effortless ease with himself is so tasty. Speaks volumes of how good Danson is at his job.

      I too saw an interview where he discusses this and agree, it's so surprising as he is such a deft hand at this role. Additionally, he comes across as very thoughtful and smart during interviews, very self-aware - the kind of person, who doesn't take things for granted, so perhaps one can see that he wouldn't just be cocky about it.

      Well its actually quite common, after all they're actors. The producers had there doubts as well, but the liked the chemistry with Shelly, and after dong Taxi, they felt it critical to have a romance at the center of the show.

    Cheers was so great. It wasn't a show where major stuff happened but it was just so well written with so many great characters and perfectly cast.The witty zingers and one liners were the best. The Sam and Diane chemistry was great. I think the change with adding Kirstie Alley gave the show legs where it was able to last 11 seasons. Though I prefer to revisit the Diane episodes more often the early seasons with Kirstie were great too.
    It kind of became a different show after Shelly left but change was probably needed at that point. The Sam and Diane will they or won't they kind of ran its course. The episode where Diane leaves and Sam imagines them together as an old married couple always chokes me up.

      Think your analysis of Cheers is spot on. Think the decision to show Sam and Diane as an old married couple who found their bliss despite being polar opposites, was genius. Gave us, fans, who were rooting for Sam and Diane a glimpse of a "happy ending."

    • @STONESGAM
      @STONESGAM 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@lnl3237 Thanks and I agree. I kind of wish they would have brought Shelley Long back for more of or the whole final season somehow. It would have been interesting to see her interact with Rebecca and the old crew again.
      Although I'm not sure how they could have done that with her now being a somewhat successful writer at that point...and without her working at the bar even if her and Sam started dating again.

    • @lnl3237
      @lnl3237 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@STONESGAM It is fun to speculate, isn't it? It was good to see Diane and Sam together one last time in the final episode, but it was clear they "couldn't go home again." Fascinating to me to read the comments after a Cheers video focusing on Diane. Her character was really a bit of a Rorschach test; some find her insufferable and were glad to see her leave and others got such a kick out of her "misfit status" in the bar. She was drawn to all things poetic and cerebral, but also yearned to be one of the gang and help the other "misfits" grow and find happiness...and she clearly possessed a libido where Sam was concerned! Love her or hate her, one still had to acknowledge Shelley Long was brilliant in the role. I have to trust that her leaving after five years was all for the best. She was in her late 30's and the window of playing romantic leads in film was closing. Had she stayed, I'm sure the writers would've given us a couple more enjoyable years of Sam and Diane finding their marital footing and then comically showing their different parenting styles; I doubt the show would've lasted six more years.
      Kirstie Alley was a deft comedic actress whose off-screen personality must've gelled better with the cast, but I honestly believe, Cheers would not have found its legs early on had Shelley Long not inhabited the role of Diane Chambers. Thanks again for your post and responding to me. So grateful to have fellow-fans forty years later to chat with about characters we came to know and love!

    • @STONESGAM
      @STONESGAM 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@lnl3237 Yes, I agree that they couldn't go home again although they tried. Sam and Diane really had nothing in common and I think once Diane was not working at the bar anymore and they didn't have their day to day banter about the people at the bar and the events that were going on there probably wasn't much left other than the physical attraction....which was becoming slightly less important as they grew older.
      If they had moved away together at that point after having not seeing each other for 6 years it likely would have been a disaster.
      They were trying to rekindle a period in their lives that was now gone. I did enjoy the Diane character and thought Shelly played the role perfectly. She was also responsible for bringing the great Frasier Crane into the bar. Nice chatting with a fellow Cheers fan!

      @@madizzle90 Yeah, although i don't remember exactly why she left, it might've been a contract/salary thing, or refusing to play the typical love interest that Chris became, but she wasn't just simply written out, and it sure was a mistake to break up the cast.
      Reggie was more dynamic, she had her own struggles and was much better at putting Becker in his place.
      Chris was more like an overbearing mom, a cartoon character.
      It just didn't feel right, because it also reminded me of the Diane years, while Reggie would be more like the Rebecca years.
      When i watched the show for the first time, i wasn't really enamoured with Reggie, and found her character to be in need for more fleshing out.
      But when she left and was replaced by Chris, the difference was just too much going in the wrong direction.
      On rewatches, i've really started to appreciate the Reggie seasons more.
      I'll have to watch the show again to find some good ones in the later years, because i struggle to remember the best episodes.
      With Cheers the banter in the earlier seasons was fresher and funnier, once Rebecca entered, the show wasn't as sharp anymore, but at least the dreadful Diane drama was gone.
      Which gave it the lasting power for another couple of years, although maybe they did go on for a year too long, and if they had cut the Diane years short, they might've struggled to make it to 10 seasons.
      But thinking back on Becker, i can't remember if there were any improvements after Reggie left.

      She was a Very Lovely Lady. I was heartbroken to find out about Her. Because for years I have paid very close attention to the Supporting Players. For instance, Ted Danson, Rhea Perlman, and George Wendt all had Guest or Recurring appearances on "Taxi." Just as Peri Gilpin and John Mahoney had Guest appearances on "Cheers" before they joined Kelsey Grammer on the cast of "Frasier."B.W.

    I took Ted Danson for granted during this era. I mean, he was up against Alan Alda, Bob Newhart, etc. All legends.
    TD as Sam Malone was pure gold.
    One interesting aspect, going back and watching, is the hair piece. I think NASA was involved with his hair piece. ha,ha!
    He and Burt Reynolds probably fed and educated 40 families and advanced 'fake hair technology' by 20 years with their money and influence.
    I love it! Miss the good ol' days.....

Girlfriends come over to --sleep-- fuck, and they always ask or say, "What are you watching?" or "I know that old show!" Ahahahah I'm watching it before bed as we speak at 2am, July 5, 2020 LOL

    The thing about Cheers, like Taxi before it, was it was a true ensemble comedy. But the extra layer in Cheers was the characters were so different, that you could have so many different kinds of humor, because you had such different characters. Highbrow, lowbrow, slapstick, screwball, raunchy, sophomoric, puns, dad jokes ... You had everything. That's why I have Cheers up there with Seinfeld in my pantheon. Seinfeld is better IMHO, because it had way better and smarter writing, but Cheers holds its own.
