    Maybe my favorite Woody moment is when Frasier introduces Lilith to the bar.. "everybody id like you to meet my date, dr lilith sternin, md phd edd apa" and Woody goes "boy it sure isnt spelled like it sounds" A great episode as well.

      @massimosgaravato8232 I don't hold it against Conan or anything but to me there is a no man's land that should be avoided for those who have passed. What the hell do I know about humor I am some unknown TH-cam commenter, but I think if you're going to try and land a joke on a beloved character who is no longer with us, ideally the joke is good enough to make everyone forget you just joked about it, which unfortunately wasn't the case.
      Whoops, accidentally deleted this comment, maybe it'll take this time.

    That joke to introduce the character of Woody to the show (and the audience) should be studied by tv writers everywhere. It’s perfect. It’s not only very funny, but it lets the audience relax and know that everything’s going to be ok. Because Coach didn’t leave the show because of contract negotiations or to go onto a different project. He was *beloved* by the audience and, when he passed away, there was a real sense of loss. To give the audience comfort while also making them laugh the way that pen pal joke did is a real skill.

    • @sulu6726
      @sulu6726 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      AI has studied that joke a quintillion times already. TV writers are consigned to history.

    • @AC3handle
      @AC3handle 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      It works on so many levels.
      The goofyness of the charas, and yet wholesomeness,
      and in the end, the fact that coach handed the 'pen' off to woody.
      That people were thinking 'he's never going to be as good as Coach, and yet, there he was."

    One thing special about Cheers is that they filmed on actual film instead of videotape like all the other shows at the time. That's why it looks so good even today.

    • @strats991
      @strats991 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      They did do a videotape test because the studio wanted to cut costs so they shot a scene but it looked drab, dull, and lifeless... so they stuck with film.

      I did not know that, but there’s no doubt you can see the difference even in their Thursday night teaming with Cosby, Family Ties, & Night Court.

    • @SteveSmartPoetryandMusic
      @SteveSmartPoetryandMusic 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      @@staxmantim I didn't know that either but it does explain a lot about why it always felt so much more like being in a real place than the other shows, like a real bar not just a soundstage. That bar felt real to so many people and maybe that's because it wasn't over-lit.

    • @andydufresne8034
      @andydufresne8034 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      I studied film in the the early 2000s and back then, we were all "film-purists" because video just couldn't compare and we couldn't imagine it ever replacing film. They say that film has deeper dimension because the emulsion has layers while video is flat. Film was way higher resolution than video back then. Each frame of film ends up in a slightly different position in the gate of the camera and projector so that we subconsciously perceive it as moving in an almost shaky dancing motion while the video frame is perfectly still. And video was 30 frames per second interlaced which made it sharp and hyper-realistic while film has a slower frame rate of 24 and is full frame rather than interlaced which gives it an other-worldly magical feel. It was one of the biggest revolutions in 150 years of motion pictures when video cameras became high-enough resolution to shoot movies on. Now, they're two and three times the resolution of 35mm film.

    Amazing to thank that show in the early seasons was just cracking the top 20. I remember from the beginning that show was special and therefore assumed it was a hit for everyone. By the time I was in college, Thursday nights were special. We’d often get a quarter keg to watch cheers. Jabber before. Jabber during the commercials. But when the show was on, you could hear a pin drop… In fact, sometimes before the show would start, we would play Cheers trivia. Also had a roommate named norm. We used to send him out just to walk in so we could yell, “NORM” and set up a classic Norm line for him… Great memories!

During the pandemic lock-downs, I rewatched the entire 11 seasons. I absolutely fell in love with Diane but the entire cast were fantastic. There's this place when you get older and then revisit Cheers on streamers. The first episode is excellent. Shelley Long does the heavy lifting and yet at the same time the characters are basically established in the first 10 minutes. It is nice to revisit a show years later and know who the characters are from the pilot after having seen every episode. Woody coming in to "fill in" for Nicholas Colasanto is no small feat. Nick is like 10x funnier the older you get.

    Diane leaving was best thing ever because it allowed the writers to go in a completely different direction and freshen up a hit show and she wasn't a beloved enough character that people missed.

      The writers agree. If she’d stayed, the show would have had to end soon because there just wasn’t anywhere else for the Sam and Diane story to go.

    Two of the funniest I remember...
    1. When Sam Malone's character is on a radio station... asking for baseball questions. No one calls in... Woody calls in (on the air) asking where the olives are? 2. When Woody was the butt end victim of the "Irish arm wrestling" gag. After being smacked in the face with his own hand... Woody says, I won... and I'm not even Irish!

    When I think of Woody Harrelson, I never think of Cheers, even though I watched it back in the eighties.
    He has been in too many great movies to associate him with that.
    But I see that with other people. Like Mark Wahlberg, they might be like, "oh yeah, Marky mark."
    Or Tom Cruise, they immediately think of Risky business.
    I am like, "what???"
    Or Tom Hanks, they think of Bosom buddies. It is crazy.

    6:40 Even two weeks ago (as this was uploaded), Ted's a good lookin' guy. At least that's how I always saw him on Cheers. He has aged extremely well.
    I'm going to need to re-watch Cheers as a proper adult. I watched reruns a bit when I was in my early 20s I think, but I saw some clips from the show recently and I was howling.
