If you're doing Total Drama, do be sure not to skip Total Drama Presents: The Ridonculous Race. It really was a breath of fresh air in the Total Drama franchise despite being more-or-less a spin-off, and many consider it to be one of the top 3 seasons alongside Island and World Tour.

I think what made the show get the "over-exposure" is the fact that it came out at the perfect time to earn it. It was technically the best show on cartoon network of its time, because Cartoon Network wasn't really making cartoons at that time, at least not as much as you'd expect from a channel called CARTOON NETWORK.
It's part of why a lot canadian shows were truly kicking off worldwide during the 2000's.

6:41 The worst part about this elimination is that Tyler *completed his challenge.* He had to stay in a chicken pen for a certain amount of time, and although he was terrified and in the fetal position, he did exactly what he was supposed to do. Why didn't he get a point for that? Same reason as Harold, which I assume is that the writers were biased towards the Screaming Gophers

In regards to Tyler being eliminated instead of Courtney, I don’t think it was solely because of his failure to complete his task in the challenge. Even though her teammates didn’t always approve of Courtney’s tactics, they were often effective, whereas Tyler’s physical ineptness made him complete deadweight. On top of that, Tyler wasn’t as socially integrated into the team as Courtney was. DJ, Duncan, and Geoff were all best friends, and Courtney was close with Bridgette, and all five of them pretty much made up the “in-crowd” of the Bass. The person who Tyler was the closest to was Lindsay, who was on the other team. Harold and Sadie were outcasts too, but Harold at least proved his worth to the team, almost single-handedly winning the first two challenges, and Sadie also managed to score one of their only three points in the challenge, while Tyler pretty much always failed to impress in every challenge he competed in.

Total Drama was the rare show for me that was guilty pleasure at first, but then I realized how well the 3rd season was written and the high prod value considering they had a freakin musical in EVERY episode. Like that requires WAY more talent than an average cartoon episode. And yes the design and animation of Total Drama is as low as you can get with the Canadian budgets, but something nostalgic of the HANNA BARBERA type shows made me hooked for all seasons, even the shitty ones in later years. I made a Deathbed just for that reason, it lost all its charm by season 5

Considering the additions in RotI and PI, it was a really good move to transition to beyond the Survivor spoof for The Ridonculous Race. PI showed how bottom of the barrel the teen archetypes had gotten when one of them was LARPer who can’t separate fantasy from reality, one was Disney Princess and one was female Owen without the charm, so opening up to include adults as contestants made a massive difference.

Sky, Dave and Jasmine were some of the only not heightened stereotype characters on PI and out of them only Jasmine wound up being sympathetic by the end. The "almost" in the reality show bit in your description is actually perhaps the thing that saves this show in the end. It leads to an odd niche where it can get the same sort of... whatever that Reality TV shows get you, except that being animated and allowed to go beyond all reasonable safety (in a world that is SUPPOSEDLY fairly grounded) gets you a setting that is zany and exaggerated as well.
It can appeal to a cartoon lover who thinks Reality TV is dumb... because it can make use of the fact that it is, in fact, a cartoon to basically bypass the "Reality" part of "Reality TV" by enough to make it more interesting, or at the very least, more entertaining.

One thing I think you failed to mention was Izzy & LeShawna's absence in the bike racing challenge in episode 18. That one detail has always bugged me because it shouldn't make sense. Chris does ask where they are, but shruggs it off like, "Oh well, their loss."
So, can anyone be absent from challenges and not get booted? I always thought you have to compete in all challenges, otherwise you'd be kicked out. And if yes, then why don't the rest of the challengers do it?
Granted, other examples like this has been done, like the dodgeball challenge where Noah doesn't compete at all, but he got eliminated in the end so it's fine, or in challenges like the talent show, trust, or extreme challenges, not every challenger competed, but for those who did, they were competing for their team, so that also gets a pass, but my point is everyone post merge all competed in their challenges, except in episode 18, because they were fighting for themselves by that point.
What are the rules for competing in challenges, is what I'm trying to ask.

I’d use the term archetype rather than stereotype because archetype is a starting point. Characters do show traits not always associated with their outward appearance, like Lindsey being smarter than people give her dumb blonde persona credit for. Make no mistake, she does play into it often enough (particularly when it comes to Tyler, at one stage her not remembering his name right was a running joke) but does have points where she subverts it such as her mechanical skills or being the one to solve to murder mystery in the Action season. Plus her calling out Heather is legendary.

Also, just as a small complaint, but please, don't give up on this project if it doesn't get a high start. You have been making a lot of great ideas and video series that i think were pretty good but don't seem like they're getting any attention anytime soon.
The biggest example being your Zelda series, i thought your video on the first game was amazing and it gave a lot of hope for what was to come, but it's been months since that video and i am concerned if it got canned due to low engagement. But i'd argue that a new project needs more than one video to kick off.
I understand it's not easy to just toss time, effort and money on something that might not deliver the expectations, but i hope this doesn't lead to not innovate yourself for the sake of stability, even though i wouldn't blame you guys for it.

My Opinions on the TD Seasons:
Island: Objectively the best one, not my favorite, but it's a solid number 2
Action: Not the best, but still pretty good, Lindsay got robbed twice in a row
World Tour: I'm a musical theatre nerd plus one of my favorite characters winning in the US, top tier season except for the love triangle, Lindsay got robbed again
Revenge of the Island: Kind of lame challenges, but the cast hard carries the season into my top 3/4
    All-Stars: N o
Pahkitew Island: The overly gimmicky cast is an understandable deal-breaker for some, but even with that, it's miles better than All-Stars
Ridonculous Race: A breath of fresh air and return to form for the series, it really feels like Island: Amazing Race Edition
Reboot: Both seasons of the reboot in my opinion are good, but the second half collectively drags it down a lot

I remember enjoying Total Drama Island. I don’t know why but I voted for Owen to win since I found him the funniest of the cast but looking back, Gwen should have won.
I did not like Action and barely watched World Tour. When we went back to the island, I only watched one episode.
It was fun while it lasted but yeah, the first season was clearly the best

    • @BlackKyurem5

I'd argue World Tour is the best season, it ironed out all the problems Island (completely 180 continuity, a lot of eliminations made no sense just so Heather could stay in the game, mediocre finals etc.) and Action (which was massively experimental with the ideas brought in so moments were hit and miss) had and was pretty engaging story throughout as well.

Tyler’s elimination is especially bullshit because he literally climbs into the pen with the chickens. Yea, he’s in a fetal position, but he’s sitting right next to them.

In fact, DJ has never been eliminated due to voting (although he would have had in World Tour, had Harold not quit in Japan). In Island, he was eliminated because he freaked out without even seeing the "killer" (AKA Chef). In Action, he quit because he felt guilty about his illegal alliance with Chef. And in World Tour, he was eliminated because he was the last member of his team, which lost.

To add to your point though, she also didn’t even know that the Tiki doll was cursed, so it was really Chris’s fault for not telling her. Not to mention, all of the terrible things that happened to the Gophers were really the fault of their actions, as you pointed out with Owen eating the second round meal.

The series was pretty fun and interesting for my younger self. It did feel like a more teenage show and thus it stood out for the time it was airing. I’ll say two things:
1: I felt Owin was going to win very early on, because they used his face as the icon for the show during the ads! Very suspicious I tell ya.
2: I think Ezekiel is overhated these days. He was rather sheltered at home, being home schooled and all, so it makes sense why he’s like that (it could be way worst tho). But even when his voting was deserved, he doesn’t act that bad after. I hardly have any memory of him being sexist or anything, even agreeing to not be when helping Beth and Lindsey find the money. Just a bothersome thing to bring up.
    So yeah. Nice review really.

Tyler's also probably the weakest bass player overall (I'd argue even katie and sadie played better than him) while courtney contributes much more to the team so it's no wonder they voted him off.

When Total Drama first came to Cartoon Network, I got pretty excited. First of all, it was great to see Cartoon Network aim for an older audience, even if the show was made by a different country altogether. There was no shortage of iconic characters. It didn't matter if they were male or female, nor did it matter if we're talking about the Screaming Gophers or the Killer Bass, there was something each one had to remember him or her for. It wasn't just the characters that were memorable, as I still find myself quoting this show to this day.

I remember being obsessed with TDI as a kid! Teletoon (Canadian cartoon TV channel) always aired the episodes in order and would play the latest episode several times a day for kids to keep up. They even would air the previous episode some time before the new one so that kids could keep up. Which is something they still do to this day when it comes to shows with on going plots last time I checked!

  • @weatheronthe8s895

I remember watching Total Drama a bit as a kid and liking it. I liked it enough that during World Tour, I actually did tune into the episodes, and also ended up watching the later episodes uploaded to TH-cam recorded from Canadian airings. I loved finding that as a kid. I liked the first 3 seasons overall quite a bit. Revenge of the Island was harder to keep my interest though. I stopped watching around the middle of the season because I just didn't find it engaging. I was getting most of my cartoons at that time with next day video on demand on the cable box when I ate breakfast in the mornings, and I often chose to watch old episodes of Dexter's Lab put on there instead. VOD wasn't perfect (and was sorta glitchy at times), but it was nice to have back when streaming wasn't as robust as it is today considering I would have rather watched preschool shows or the news than whatever was on Cartoon Network or anything.
