I won 170 000€ in lottery and only told my mom. I put 120 000 in savings. With 50k left I spent something on myself (shoes, paid off the rest my car loan, trips to Paris and Istanbul), and offered a loan to my friends that were struggling to find money to build their house. And I spend more money for presents for my close ones. Couple of people noticed pricey gifts, but I got away with telling them I got a raise at my job.Unless they are reading this! :) It makes me happy seeing them happy.

Whenever lottery winners lose it all quickly or act foolish or mean, it's clearly because they were not ready for this money. I would try to not change anything. That way, I can be assured the normal life I already have, except in times of hardship I would be preventing despair. That, and I'd add like $10,000 to my steam account, buy tons of games, and then play roughly 1% of them
That would be almost impossible. Your family would find out about your winnings and other people because of the news. Your family would probably ask for some money. If you gave the money, they would ask for more and keep asking. If you didn't give the money, they would hate you for not giving them money and would think you're selfish. People's sob stories would persuade you to give them money. Having all that money would make you want to buy things, even if you would only buy small things. You would think "I will only buy this" and then keep buying things with that mentality. You would also need to store the money. Index funds and ETFs would increase your money, while savings accounts would decrease your money. It would be a big mental battle to not spend that money and a battle against your family and friends.
I'm glad he mentioned spending money on experiences rather than things. Because all I can think is if I won the lottery I would be able to live debt free, not waste my days away working, and be able to focus on passions, talents, and developing new skills. There's an endless well of self-improvement I could indulge in if I didn't have to spend 8 hours a day being a wage drone.
Feralz In the 3 years since this comment was written, I’ve come into quite a bit of money and am far more affluent than I was before. Believe me, wealth and riches also translate to power in today’s world and this will bring you much joy, so long as you don’t *FLAUNT* it about openly. I’ll give you some basic advice: 1. When you come into money, ensure that you receive it as discretely as possible, pay the necessary taxes without complaint and quietly deposit the rest in bite-size chunks so as to not attract attention. The fewer people who know, the better. Waving your bag of gold around is the worst mistake you can make. The only guys who should know should be the bank, your accountant and the IRS. 2. If there’s no way to hide the fact that you’re coming into money, try to downplay how much you actually have and spread some of it out freely amongst those closest to you; those who you trust so as to not inspire jealousy. Finally, when you do this, lament that you wish you had more to give them so as to make them feel guilty. They’ll be less likely to ask you for money in the future. 3. If you intend to make a big purchase, prepare in advance for a couple years. Casually mention every now and then that you’re saving up for this purchase so that when it happens, it doesn’t look like it came out of nowhere. 4. Most important of all, remain humble and try to identify with the person you were before you accumulated wealth. With pride comes immeasurable folly. Good luck.

there are many benefits to winning the lottery - you sleep much better knowing you have a strong financial foundation to stand on, you automatically know who are your real friends because the greedy ones will show their true colors, you can invest without assuming much risk, you can help out family members in need, you can spend more on things that give you intellectual and emotional satisfaction (and not just showy flashy pointless things) ... folks who know the value of money and respect it will definitely be happier by winning a lottery..

With a million dollars I'd pay off all debt within my close family. Then, buy a decent house and spoil myself a little. After that Ill invest in real estates that are in still developing countries for they have more growth potential than an already developed country.
Sandip Vishwakarma In my city, you can get condos in downtown for about 200-300k. Condos in developing countries are cheap. only about 100-200k located in downtown as well. Plenty can be done with just a million
ReiAsianBoy Millions of dollars would mean nothing for a country. First of all, the problem with undeveloped countries is their political system. The politicians take away the money for themselves, despite the potential. Second of all, countries need hundreds of billions, not a few millions, to make substantial changes.
I'd pay my college fees, help my father to open a japanese restaurant (he always wanted it, but never gathered courage to actually do it), pay college expenses for my mom (she wants to change her profession), after finishing my college I'd study art. I'd spent some time just drawing and painting. I'd buy wacom's best graphic tablet and take tons of digital illustration courses. I'd travel abroad and live on another country for some years. I'd buy my dog better snacks, help my grandparents with health issues to pay for their medicine, I'd finally donate money to causes that keep sending me those sad emails about so many things that are worth funding, I'd find that one developer who wants to create a cool game, but will never raise enough money to do it, I'd build house that doesn't damage the environment, buy a car that's also clean and I'd also write a book, not about me or how I got rich, but about my own fantasy world that I've been writing about and that no one really knows about and that I still think would entertain people. And those are the things I'd do that I remember on top of my head.
this makes me think so deeply on exploring and when I watch this video i always think about the music end part (something like 2/3) this is one of the best lessons ever!
this is one of the best intriguing video i ever watched quite inspiring people to donate, and tell how to spend money in new experiences to gain higher and longer level of happines
I work 5 days a week and mostly really busy during the weekend. I almost mostly don't have time for myself. Winning the lottery for me won't be about happiness but freedom. I want to have the freedom to travel, help families and make memorable memories of my short time in this world. I wish that someday I win the lottery and make positive changes to the world.
That's why happiness can only achieve if you achieved things through harder, significant, and more meaningful way and that's where variety came to prolong the concept so called happiness.
When you have enough money where it works for you (providing enough in passive income to cover all your expenses) rather than you having to work for it, then you have freedom to do whatever makes you happy. 1 million dollars isn't enough to go around buying expensive fancy things, as the money will soon run out... but invested wisely you can basically have the income of a well-paying job without the huge sacrifice of time and energy that comes with having to work for it, and that's huge. (If you already love your job and it brings you fulfillment then that's a different story) Freedom is the key word here. Money leads to freedom, and freedom makes it a lot easier to pursue your dreams. Thus leading to happiness.
It was a good video. The issue with running tests like this is that there are too many variables, for instance: 1) What was your happiness prior to going the money? 2) What were you doing with the money? 3) What additional complexity did you bring into your life by having the money? The only thing in my life that would change is that I wouldn't have to worry about life expenses, my lifestyle would remain the same. I don't think that happy is the right word... *Comfortable* might be a better word to use. Happiness comes from within and from others you interact with. Not worrying about money would definitely make me happier.
If I won, I would just pick up any job, work until I understand all of its functions, then move on to another job once the learning phase is done; ad infinitum until I find one that's perfect for me. I could basically learn all sorts of new things in different industries, with a great insight on how every "big" or "small" job has its place, as well as the value of hard work - but without ever having to worry financially. One can only wish..
This is straight up bs. I could do so much with my life with money. I wouldn't have to go to work everyday / worry about eating every night / and constantly stress over if I'm going to lose my job one day.
If i'd win the lotery, i would by my mom a new and bigger house in a good neighbourhood, i would pay for my niece school life (sorry for my english), and the rest... maybe just travelling and eating all kinds of food.
experiment on myself: i comment before watching the video, then i'll edit my comment after i watch it, and compare if my opinion has changed. before: i think winning would give me happiness because it would allow me to work less and have the possibility to do what i prefer with my time. after: as the video confirms, i still think i'd be happier because the original plan was to use the funds to have more free time and therefore more experiences during my lifetime, rather than luxury stuff. but at the same time i see the deeper psychological aspects: our level of happiness depends on our mental health and attitide, not only on external things like weath
In short: there are many ways it could make you happier, and none it could make you sad (if it did you could always just give it away). However if your problems are with your personality and decisions, not finances, then it won't make a big difference. Money is freedom. It automatically translates to some happiness but the result depends a lot on what you do with it. Of course people who are stupid, make bad decisions, will end up hurting themselves and will be unhappy even with that extra freedom. People who just used money as an excuse to hide from their personality issues will be unhappy. And people who think winning like a $1,000,000 will make them rich and they can just buy luxury items, quickly waste it on useless stuff and will be unhappy when they have to cut back after.
Wining the lottery can actually make u feel happier if you know how to use the money wisely. 1. Wise people would do wise investment to grow your money (not gambling) and only purchase things with the profit gain from investments. 2. Donate at least 5% of your capital every year. 3. Most people would probably get bored of their life after having so much money and time. By continuously purchasing education and experience to improve yourself would make you happier as stated in the video.
I can confidently say I know exactly what I am going to do with it. I just had this conversation on the way home, in fact, and this video really assured my answer.
Those who choose to donate are in a position to donate and therefore happier to being with. If I can't make ends meet then donation is the last thing on my mind.
i can agree to a large portion of the thesis in this, but i would infer that you can manipulate the overall outcome by using the money in a steady pattern to both invest and build up others. This is somewhat supported by the study shown in the video over happiness in donating to others. Basically, if you win the lotto, use it to better your placement(pay off debts) and then, mix it between donating portions, and self served purchases. it serves a self-serving altruistic purpose, but overall should have an overall positive affect on the lucky person with the money. ... mind you this is me rambling well past my sleep time schedule..
@@minecraftminertime Yeah, I'd only want to win the lottery in a state that allowed anonymity.
Time is our money. We should waste it wisely.
Happiness? L o L.

Sure, winning the lottery may not make me happy forever, but I'd rather cry in a Lamborghini than on a bicycle.
true
You didnt understand the video. Its not about whether you are crying on a Lamborghini or a bicycle, its about everything else.
Feralz In the 3 years since this comment was written, I’ve come into quite a bit of money and am far more affluent than I was before. Believe me, wealth and riches also translate to power in today’s world and this will bring you much joy, so long as you don’t *FLAUNT* it about openly. I’ll give you some basic advice:
Good luck.
@@FlaviusBelisarius-ck6uv Your writing reminds me of some Machiavellian influence. I would agree with a lot of your points in particular the last part: you cannot forget who you were before you gained money, because thats the only thing that is true.

Lost opportunity
there are many benefits to winning the lottery - you sleep much better knowing you have a strong financial foundation to stand on, you automatically know who are your real friends because the greedy ones will show their true colors, you can invest without assuming much risk, you can help out family members in need, you can spend more on things that give you intellectual and emotional satisfaction (and not just showy flashy pointless things) ... folks who know the value of money and respect it will definitely be happier by winning a lottery..
True.
Shikhanshu Agarwal the problem is you arent focusing on the cons at all. yeah seeing who ur true friends are great but family homicide increases by 240x more and ur chance of being murdered is significantly higher. or how about the fact that cutting relationships is very hard. what about tax? how are you sure you can invest without much risk? if you couldnt get profit before winning i doubt u can get profit after winning.
I really adore your videos, so creative and the animation is so well made, keep doing this amazing work !!!!
With a million dollars I'd pay off all debt within my close family. Then, buy a decent house and spoil myself a little. After that Ill invest in real estates that are in still developing countries for they have more growth potential than an already developed country.
I doubt just a million would turn the things that much
You're full of shit. You would spend it all on yourself.
Sandip Vishwakarma In my city, you can get condos in downtown for about 200-300k. Condos in developing countries are cheap. only about 100-200k located in downtown as well. Plenty can be done with just a million
you can turn a million dollars into billions
ReiAsianBoy Millions of dollars would mean nothing for a country. First of all, the problem with undeveloped countries is their political system. The politicians take away the money for themselves, despite the potential. Second of all, countries need hundreds of billions, not a few millions, to make substantial changes.

If you can't be happy with money you don't know how to use it.
how to use it?
Diego // Travel, helping others, science... and hookers of course as he said
traveling, helping others and science is boring, I need to do something while I recover energy for more hookers
That's what drugs are for
Damn you are good at this
It's all about your mindset. It's not the money that's making you unhappy it's the way you deal with it
Even if you don't become happier you're at least richer and as happy as before so your life would be better however
It’s far better to give than it is to receive. That’s why those people in the study felt happier when they spent their money on other people.
btw why is the heart on the right now left???? 1:12

3:35 that prooves that people with ENOUGH MONEY to be able to spend the experiment money on others are happier. Because they have initial money.

That $75 000 per year compared to $10,000 is a major difference.

Money can't buy happiness
But it can buy food, water medicens, clothes, house and things that make you happy
There are people who have all these on your list and are still unhappy.
That's why happiness can only achieve if you achieved things through harder, significant, and more meaningful way and that's where variety came to prolong the concept so called happiness.
2:19 Illuminati money?
Lol
there is literally Illuminati on the us dollar bill.
(If you already love your job and it brings you fulfillment then that's a different story)
Freedom is the key word here. Money leads to freedom, and freedom makes it a lot easier to pursue your dreams. Thus leading to happiness.
I would start a business and complete my all wish list and donate the remaining amount
I would do the same except keep some money then donate the rest so I could pay taxes and buy food and stuff
Most of the lottery winners actually lost motivation, so I doubt starting a business will be any of their priorities.
It’s amazing, when I was a kid 12-13 years old, I used to think that rich people would get bored after a while too.
If I win a lottery, I would pay off my mom's debt, donate some to charity and save the rest to get rid of the anxiety that I could become homeless.
Not worrying about money would definitely make me happier.
i like this animation !
Jilly M yea, it's really smooth and cool.

Wow, that's one of the great clips made by TED-ed IMO. Good job!
I love the synthy retro feel to this animation. It reminded me of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. (and many other BBC productions of the era).
This is straight up bs. I could do so much with my life with money. I wouldn't have to go to work everyday / worry about eating every night / and constantly stress over if I'm going to lose my job one day.
Not working could lead to severe depression. It would be better if you used some of the money to qualify for a job you enjoy.
Evi Aspropotamiti Or volunteer work
I just watched this at my school in health class. Good educational video.
If i'd win the lotery, i would by my mom a new and bigger house in a good neighbourhood, i would pay for my niece school life (sorry for my english), and the rest... maybe just travelling and eating all kinds of food.

"I wish that everyone will be rich, famous & get whatever they dreamed of so that they can understand that these is not the answer"
experiment on myself: i comment before watching the video, then i'll edit my comment after i watch it, and compare if my opinion has changed.
before: i think winning would give me happiness because it would allow me to work less and have the possibility to do what i prefer with my time.
after: as the video confirms, i still think i'd be happier because the original plan was to use the funds to have more free time and therefore more experiences during my lifetime, rather than luxury stuff. but at the same time i see the deeper psychological aspects: our level of happiness depends on our mental health and attitide, not only on external things like weath
“If money can’t buy happiness, then why is it so fabulous?” -Poppy
the line may be money doesn't buy happiness, but it does buy your way out of sadness
I just clicked on this video to answer:
Hell yes it wold make me happier!
Have a nice day
The best videos I have watched till date, and I keep coming back to it.
And people who think winning like a $1,000,000 will make them rich and they can just buy luxury items, quickly waste it on useless stuff and will be unhappy when they have to cut back after.
a trick with being happy is to be happy with what you have
What would I do:

hope she's okay now.

Buy my mom that house i promised her when i was 5 😂
no happiness will last forever, that's why I'm saving most of it
what if you save a piece of happiness right to the end of forever? then you could say your happiness lasted forever
small loan of a million dollars
Wining the lottery can actually make u feel happier if you know how to use the money wisely. 1. Wise people would do wise investment to grow your money (not gambling) and only purchase things with the profit gain from investments. 2. Donate at least 5% of your capital every year. 3. Most people would probably get bored of their life after having so much money and time. By continuously purchasing education and experience to improve yourself would make you happier as stated in the video.
Money can't buy happiness, but you can buy things that make you feel happy😊
I can confidently say I know exactly what I am going to do with it. I just had this conversation on the way home, in fact, and this video really assured my answer.
People- money can't buy you happiness
Me- your right, but I can buy things to make me happy...
Like FOOD
Those who choose to donate are in a position to donate and therefore happier to being with. If I can't make ends meet then donation is the last thing on my mind.
Gimme a Trillion Dollar Winning g lottery ticket
And see I'll be Happier forever 🤣🤣🤣
I will donate all the money to ted-ed.
So, nothing in the life matters and if I am naturarly a sad person it is impossible to find hapiness?
Ehh...
Vjorp I wouldn't say "impossible" however I believe you need to explore who you are and what you're capable of.
i can agree to a large portion of the thesis in this, but i would infer that you can manipulate the overall outcome by using the money in a steady pattern to both invest and build up others.
YaY insomnia issues
uh...duh...!!! if money isn't buying you happiness, you obviously aren't spending it right.
Might not bring happiness, but makes unhappiness more comfortable
