  • James Kalm returns to the James Fuentes Gallery to capture some unobstructed views of the Purvis Young exhibition. Purvis Young (1943-2010) is one of the artists who have recently changed the perception and appreciation of self-taught African American art by the mainstream art establishment and institutions. Well known and respected by his tight knit community in Overtown Florida, Young, through his painting, seemed to embody the sprit of his environment and the love and struggles of its inhabitants. Working on found boards, and using paint (some scavenged from hardware stores), this master was able to work these abject materials into poignant narratives of subtle coloration and a feathery yet confident brushstroke. This program was recorded March 10, 2019.
Here’s a link to the panel discussion with: Mera Rubell, Donald Rubell, Chris Martin, Robert Becker:

there's a good short doc on Purvis called Contemporary Urban Painter. Purvis was unique. The spirit to just paint despite your environment- I'm not even talking about rich and poor, but just a desire to paint. There was no aspirations to be great, or ironic, gimmicky, or stylized. He painted in a warehouse, basically in the dark, not because he chose to, but because, it was his circumstance. I didn't feel he had complaints about his life, he painted and kept his mouth shut, just like he says in the doc.

An ever day cure for the common painter's block. An inspired taste or a tease puts me at ease . Truly unpretentious!

Great that Rough Cuts displays no hierarchy of gallery, artist or exhibition choices. Just about great painting shows. Thank you!

Couldn't agree more "cave paintings". Every picture tells a story. Good show. Thanks James and Kate

You're doing great work, as I've mentioned many times before. What I may not have mentioned is that I'm an artist living in Panama who always dreamed to live/work in NYC -- Truth be told, when I finally arrived this year and spent several months, I could not wait to return home. While I miss the art, I have you James. And now, I also have peace.

I saw this work as it was getting unpacked for the show so ticked I missed it. But your video makes up for it. Purvis has become my North Star, thanks.

The Purvis figures seem to reference cave paintings.
Thank you for the early Christmas present of discovering your posts.
    Best wishes

I worked for Larry Clemons at gallery 721 and the Purvis Young Musem..I drove Purvis wound...brought Him in and out of Overtown painted with Him..and I repaired many Purvis works...I listed Purvis works and sold Purvis works on Ebay..for the gallery..only thing was ..Larry was a creep ..and I felt like a slave ..I am the only one who can recreate Purvis works

Usually the carpet frames were removed .. since it collected dirt and dust and made the pieces look not so good ...The Rubells probably meant the cleaning was the carpet pieces

Also Scot Foreman was involved with Purvis works..Martin Siskund stole Purvises money from His bank account and stole a lot of works..I really had a bad experience with people around Purvis..but not Purvis we always had a good time
