    Thank you so much for this and your other films James. I was so moved by the Motherwell paintings. The gift of being able to see them in my little Derbyshire house in the middle of England is much appreciated.

    I love the huge rectangular pieces. This is a small show without a lot of pomp, however the gallery was limited on what was available to show. I guess I really appreciate his views of abstract painting the most. TY

    Thank you, James. I have a new appreciation for Motherwell that I lacked prior to this video. I am a tried and true stuck-in-the-early-Modernists fan, and have had a real psychological wall (unwarranted) of dislike for this period of artists. Thanks to you, we can attest to the fact that Old People CAN continue with intellectual evolution well into their 50's. Heh heh. Cheers to You (and Kate) for who you are and what you do!

I would like to tell you about it as I know you have spoken about art education in your videos before and it doesn't sound like your a fan, but it is so progressive here and completely free. Thanks for posting. It is nice to see a show of Motherwells large work even if this is his B list work. I like Bluhm show but it is terribly over hung. I few less works would have helped the show and work breathe. Bluhm is a great gestural colorist.

    • @jameskalm
      @jameskalm  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Both Jerry and Walter are hardcore art heads (addicts), so it's not so surprising that one sees them when they're out, sniffing for a fix...

  • @birddogfreemann
    @birddogfreemann 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    James, at 4:32, you make huge intellectual faux pas, namely, saying eulogy INSTEAD of elegy in regards to Motherwell's Elegy to the Spanish Republic. I appreciate you wanting to sound well-educated but being overconfident can lead to such errors.

    • @jameskalm
      @jameskalm  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks for your correction @birddogfreemann. Since the beginning of this project, about fifteen years ago (and over thirteen hundred programs) I have constantly made the disclaimer that this is "halfassed reporting". Further, I have made the point that I am just a guy on a bike, a proud dropout, with a two-dollar camera, no assistance, no script, no editors, no financing (I make, edit and post these programs as a free service to the worldwide art community). These dialogues are strictly spontaneous stream of consciousness blather. If I have given you the impression that I am "wanting to sound well-educated" I apologize for this misunderstanding as well. If this "huge intellectual faux pas" offends your sensibilities to such a great extent, I suggest that you avoid the channel, because there have been, are, and will be more of these kinds of "huge intellectual faux pas". Thanks again for your correction, I appreciate it, JK

      Hi James. Thanks for doing your videos and sharing. It is great to see all the art work in New York. You obviously have your own informal style which is fine. Its amazing that these galleries allow video. I think having a tripod would make your reports more valuable. You want to share the art world and your understanding and knowledge. @@jameskalm

    I'm not sure the gigantic size of American paintings have as much to do with the vastness of the country as with the emulation and wish to be compared with Italian Renaissance painting. Just a thought. Personally, being a poor guy who doesn't know how to stretch canvas or build frames, I like smaller works.

  • @BurningSteel69

    Elegy not Eulogy.
    Elegy >> a poem of serious reflection, typically a lament for the dead.

  • @moondigit007

    I Wonder how many "wall mileage" is covered by by the abstract expressionism paintings . The scale of most of these paintings seem to suggest that they were intended
    for the sanctity of modern art museums . If those paintings didn't hang in these spaces-- where else would they impress anyone ? Modern art is a joke unless it sells.

  • @jhb61249
    @jhb61249 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The first 2 or 3 motherwell pieces are not so compelling until others are viewed, and then it all becomes so great.
    Norman Bluhm is equally nice, but it takes more to say what he says than Motherwell. No, not a put down, just a little different. Norman uses lots of organic forms reminiscent of the human figure as well as a more exotic color palette. It's all nice, but I prefer to look at the Motherwells.
    James, you do a great job presenting the work; thank Kate for us. See you around!
