RAY DAVIES on harmonica - - yes indeed - - Totally under-rated original song here from The KINKS with "It's alright" - The song starts off slower groove then rocks out ! wow ! I remember this one well !
One of the hidden GEMS(!) of British Beat in the 60's. The Beatles "I Call Your Name" & The Yardbirds "I'm Not Talking" to name a few. Masterful Pop Music by the Master's!
Excellent 60's garage here from a totally underrated band who went on to write some of the best songs/lyrics ever, over 2 decades and in many different guises-garage, country, blues, folk, rock and roll, vauderville and jazz. The fact that they couldn't tour the States was the only reason they weren't as big as The Who or The Stones.
Well, they also weren't middle class, London School of Economics degree-holding, do-anything-for-a-buck, types, like Lennon/McCartney, and Jagger/Richards. They were honest-to-goodness-working-class, piss-taking, media-hating, free-thinking punks. Not the kind of folks Americans have ever embraced en masse.
First time I ever heard the song - and It's Allright, alright! Modern rock sure misses the go-go girls frugging in the background - we need to bring that back.
@Shakermaker1995 Undoubtedly the most underrated, Shakermaker! And to familyguy...they were the Ramrods and Boll Weevils before becoming the Ravens...and then the Kinks!
@maclennan73 Good call. The Kinks as we know and Ray Davies song writing were very English. That's another reason they never cracked the states. However some of the greatest tunes ever written were by the kinks. 'Village Green Preservation Society' is a masterpiece (top 10 albums ever??)....Waterloo Sunset sends shivers down my spine.
Who only had 1 Top 10 in their career here. First 3 Kink's singles went Top 10. If only they had not been banned but Sunny Afternoon still almost went Top 10. Lola was their first hit in the US after the ban.

What a fantastic performance
Love Ray's moves, LOL. They're nerdy and cute. Only the Kinks made it totally cool to be square ! : )

The brothers RAY and Dave fighting onstage got the KINKS banned from the U.S.A. -
Ray is so god damn good looking
Best British band period
That’s subjective

1:47 that's a spicy hand gesture for 1964
Flip side of "You Really Got Me" in the States. Cool vintage audio/video clip. Cheers, '62 Mathew St. (Total Retro Rock)
Wow! This is great - I've never heard this song before! Thanks for posting it!
1:18 absolutely brilliant

Only had scads of hits in the US. If they hadn't been banned in their prime rocking years they would have been even bigger.

Thank God for stereo. This song (mono) almost gave me a headache.
I can only hear it from one side if u out earphones on
@Pollywollyish If not the best at least the most under rated.
To me, there was more raw sexual energy with the the Kinks than any other band at the time.
