Great looking video with a bit of shimmy due to the age of the original tape. Still an excellent look at a huge band in their day...

Saw John Sebastian back in 2002 or 2003 while volunteering as an usher in a performance arts center in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He had recently undergone some sort of throat surgery and we could hardly hear his voice. But the audience loved him so much, even if he was louder we still probably couldn't have heard him, what with the applause and shouts of happiness (especially when he started playing "What a Day For a Daydream") and it was still a great show. John is such a lovable character!

I DO know John was a brilliant singer back then. Whatever happened diminished his voice. When I heard him in the mid-nineties, he was still the same warm personality, but he could only croak. As a singer very influenced by John, I'd like to know the story.

Not merely a "top 40 AM radio" band, these guys recorded instant classic folk/blues/rock tunes full of hope, kindness and love. The Spoonful WERE mid-sixties New York, where I was born and raised. My teen years growing up in Queens, were incredibly rich, with the greatest music period in American history. To me, this band exemplified the folk-rock/ rock sound of the city at that time in history. I love that band. I bought every single. I was too young then, to afford the albums, but have all of them now.

  • @NoviJimB

All of their big hits were in just a two year period. They were around for a bit longer than that but once Zal left the band they didn't do much (two moderate hits and that was it). Like most successful 60's bands they were really diverse, they didn't stay with one style of music. Compare this, Dayream, Summer In The City, Nashville Cats, Darlin Be Home Soon, Do You Believe In Magic, Rain On The Roof ..., all different from one another yet all really good. Great songwriting, performing and production. I had no idea back then what a speical time it was for music. I was born in 1960 and started paying attention to what my older siblings were listening to by late 1963, right before the British invasion. I was so lucky to grow up in that era. For several years from the time I started listening the radio was filled with great new music constantly. We'll never see anything close to that again.

British invasion was about 1774, and people were excited about tea or some such energy drink.
Music is and was multicultural - no invasions.

I used to go to Hullabaloo after hours when I was a teenager. We weren't old enough to get in to the show, so they would put on a revolving stage, local groups and some popular ones as well. Every half hour the stage would bring in another group that was setting up behind the curtain. They took out all the tables and most of the chairs, so we had to bring our own chairs, and brought food and our drinks because everything was closed except the bands that played. Saw the Doors for the first time, and I think it was one of their first gigs before they had even recorded their hit song "light My Fire". the girls in the audience of which there were only about 30 or 40 people. Not a large group. But it was a great way to watch bands. Lots of people took drugs to keep them awake so they wouldn't fall asleep, but a lot of them did sleep through it. Can you imagine if they did that now, all the homeless that would try to get in. Not that I have anything against them, but our streets weren't overtaken by the homeless back then. But there were some travelers that passed through Hollywood on their treks to where ever.

I was so young - only 6 years old - but remember this song well. We always had the radio tuned into WIXY or CKLW in Clevleand. The radio sat on the kitchen table - was there until the house sold 30 years later. Anyway, even as a kid I appreciated the harmonies and jangly guitars of songs like this. Somethign about the harmonies and easy going pop style that really resonated with me back then - and to this day as well. Happy to be stuck in the past!

I was a 10 year old boy when I walked down to the local shopping area known as caste Village in Pittsburgh PA and there was a band playing in the corner and it was the loving spoonful playing one of their biggest hits and there weren’t many people around at that point but I still to this day I think it was more of a dream to imagine that a top popular band was actually playing for free in a tiny little shopping mall outdoors. I guess it was the days, when I was a 16-year-old the band America played for free in McKeesport in one of the parks, they were on top of the world and for some reason they were playing for free in our town, it was a glorious day.

My wife and I were listening to this song one day, and when the lyrics "Today I said the time was right for me to follow you; I knew I'd find you in a day or two; and it's true" played, I changed "day" to "decade". We went to high school together, and I thought she was absolutely gorgeous, but we never dated because she was so popular and I was shy. We saw each other again at our 10 year reunion and went our separate ways. Twenty years later, I contacted her, we dated and then got married.
