Saw Ray Davies the other night at a local event where he was interviewed by Mark Hamill and played music. Half the proceeds went to a homeless charity. Great guy still!
Every time they played this song at dances the seats emptied out immediately. This song was like an anthem for many years. It always got the crowd going. The Kinks had a lot of hits but you should listen to some of their albums to get the whole sound of the them.
What amazes is how ahead of their time groups like the kinks were - in fact there are few groups that can match them. You see them here performing for these teeny bobbers. And I don't think these kids even know what they're looking at - in terms of the monster talent before them on that stage. It just blows away. We really need talent like this again.
Ehh, the volume of output is just so much incredibly larger today that it's harder to separate the wheat from the chaff. The Kinks developed their sound by slicing the speaker cone of their amps with a razor blade. It was discovered purely by accident. Today we call it 'distortion'... Based on that fact it can be assumed that this was the first hard rock song.
+Craig D Distortion became popular in R&B in about 1948, during the same period rock and roll was being invented as a new kind of R&B, and an example of rock and roll with distorted guitar from 1951 is "Midnight Grinder" by Joe Morris.
+Craig D actually it was not the first 'distortion' before this jazz players would turn there amp up really loud to generate overdrive witch is a type of distortion.
@@@goatnuts69 Listen assshole! American people are ancestral Brits. British & Yank people are the same people. Whether or not you agree or disagree with her statement & I think that I could, there is no reason to come on and attack her when she is making a personal observation.
No it wasn't. The British invasion killed all of the interesting sub-genres of American rock, like Surf Rock and Garage Rock. The American musical landscape of the 70s would've been much more interesting without the British invasion. Without the Beatles we'd get more Dick Dales and actual black musicians playing black music, as opposed to British white boys with long hair like Mick Jagger pretending to be black.
@@Jonmad17 In the USA we treated black musicians like shit. Christ, the Jimi Hendrix Experience are technically a British Invasion act because nobody in the States would give him a chance. It doesn't matter who was first or better anyhow. Musicians from US and UK have been going back and forth imitating each other since WW2.
A friend of mine, my former bassist, joined another band and used to open for the Kinks and said they aren't very nice. But nice musicians and good music don't always go together.
Thank you, brothers Davies, for 50 years of music that tickles my muse just right.Ray is one of the great writers of the 20th Century. He is right up there with Lennon/McCartney who I think are the best song writers of the 1900's. Dave is not slouch as a song writer. Dave has a different process to his song writing but I like the results. 50th Anniversary this year so I am hoping that Ray and Dave explore putting the band back together. Not just to play oldies, no to record new material and tour in honor of the fiftieth. Not to many groups make it that far and I would like to see the legacy honored, but at the same time I want new material. Dave and Ray both still write and tour so I know they have the chops. All that remains is do they have the desire to make Kinks music in the present day with the same dedication as they did starting out. I believer that if the two Davies get together and just jam that they will have their answer in short order. Focus on the positive and I do not see the Davies failing if they put the Kinks back together again. There is nothing like Dave opening the show with some power chords and Ray and Mick following that is magic. Gives me a chill just thinking about it. I would love to see the Kinks come with new material along with the hits on tour and just remind the people who never heard the band when they still played. Many contemporary bands cite the Kinks as an influence. I believer a Kinks reunion with an album of new material and a tour celebrating the band 50 years will be will received. Long Live Ray & Dave Davies and their band the Kinks! Now how cool is that to know you are a member of the original British Invasion along with the Rolling Stones, The Beatles, and so many more?
Nothing new I can say to this: this is the best start for the next rock, grunge or heavy metal groups. Thanks a lot for these boys - super classic forever !
I was in my early teens when they hit. and I I guess I loved their cutting edge stuff, the great solos and pure edgyness to their work. Thanks for the video.
It was. They were indeed. The Kinks were very talented and one of the most popular bands of their era. This was probably partly due to the charisma of their front man.
The Kinks are the most leading edge band of that time. They are the start of so many changes that the 60s had. Without them who knows how long it would have taken for music to change as it did from 64 to 70.
People ...The Kinks were NEVER , or have ever been 'underrated' !!!!!! They were huge , and STILL REMAIN HUGE today !!!!!!!! Icons of songwriting .....I lived through The Kinks from day 1.....ALWAYS been enormously admired by most. NEVER underrated ...maybe in some people's worlds they think they are ...but you would be wrong !!!!!!!!!
I heard this for the first time in 1964 on the BBC's "Top of the Pops" TV programme (in black and white) and have loved it ever since. I surely always will!
Just FYI No Marshall stacks in these days, bro. (Cream and Hendrix brought them into the picture 3-4 years later.) You'd be amazed at how underpowered amps were during the British Invasion. One of the main reasons that the Beatles quit touring was that they couldn't hear themselves with all the screaming.
I saw Ray in the 90s in Stockbridge Massachusetts, performing his solo stuff as the whole front row reminded me of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, singing along and accompanying Ray!
The rumor at the time was that Jimmy Page played the lead riff in the studio, and whenever he was asked, Ray Davies always talked about how good a guitar played his brother was, but never really denied it was Page in studio. Page seems to have played on every second record recorded in England at the time, but the Kinks toured a lot, so Davies must have played everything on stage.
Dave's riff here puts this track into God tier territory. They (Ray & Dave) were feuding before the Gallagher boys were even born. Brothers have been going at it since Cain and Abel 🙂
After all this time, this song still shines, it seems incredible to think this was 1964 , 60 years ago in July Ray Davies recorded this song with the Kinks. Brilliant !

If their tour had not been banned in the US in '65, who knows how big they would have been. And even with that they were STILL huge. They're right up there with The Who and Cream in my book.
There is something so epic about that tune. So simple, and yet it strikes a chord that seems to touch all generations. Something about the bluesy riff, the modulation and the dirty guitar distortion. This is a school example of how you write a smashing hit. They are rare though.

These guys should still be filling up stadiums, just like The Stones....
For real. I honestly think The Animals and Kinks are just as good as the stones
I totally agree
They unfortunately broke up 20 years ago.
Saw Ray Davies the other night at a local event where he was interviewed by Mark Hamill and played music. Half the proceeds went to a homeless charity. Great guy still!
better
the riff is in the Hall of Fame! this is in everyone's top 20 all time songs
I love how music from this era was so naughty but they were careful enough about it that you could listen to it with children or old people about
This was the era when music was real, not only did you listen to the song but you felt it. It became part of you.
And you could actually understand lyrics that were more than grunts about guns and bitches
Just like now. Cool.
Ehh, the volume of output is just so much incredibly larger today that it's harder to separate the wheat from the chaff. There's still real music being made, you just got more than a handful of television and radio stations (often owned by the same networks) filtering everything before you'd ever hear / see it, so you gotta dig around a little more.
@@blakebrown534 there was a lot of shit insubstantial music at the time as well. we just only remember the good songs (and of course equipment wasnt as accessible, so the crap wouldnt get recorded or distributed). people have always made bad music, thats the joy of music
@@Rhyull you realize that old people were equally critical of early rock right? how it corrupted morals etc? don't get caught up in the generational war. just appreciate the music
Beatles, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Who and Kinks, Clash, Wings, Cream.
What about Perry Como?
Wings weren’t on that level. Far from it.
The Faces. The Small Faces, Black Sabbath,
The Animals, The Doors

First time I heard this I was so surprised to find out that it was from 1964. It sounded like smth from the late 70s-punk scene. Amazing song
I think the punk rockers took a few lessons from the Kinks!
The riff of this song influenced many of the early heavy metal and punk rock musicians.
Warrogue1 Z
That's because most of them grew up on either this or guys influenced by this :D
***** Nope, I actually heard the '64 version the first time I heard it..
Though I don't think i'v heard the 80s version so i'll definitely check that out
The Kinks developed their sound by slicing the speaker cone of their amps with a razor blade.
True, and R&B of 1948-1951 generally had a lot more buzzy, wild distortion than jazz of 1948-1951 did.
+Craig D well no, Link Ray with his tune "Rumble" developed the sound.

AGREED 👍
The best thing to happen to American rock and roll was the British invasion.
@@goatnuts69 Some people just can't accept the facts when they're confronted with them
JFK had just been Murdered and America was in Mourning, the British Bands saved us
@@@goatnuts69
Listen assshole!
Look how enthusiastic the performers are
I love Ray Davies, but early on Dave Davies drove the Kinks through the stratosphere. One of the best guitarists of all time.
The birth of hard rock, punk and metal. (And a whole of stuff you can't even put into words, in between!)
Ray is so adorably awkward here. Bless.

This song is a classic! Love it to bits. ❤️❤️

I love that first break in the music and the look on Dave's face!!!
That 60's style - black clothes and guitar straps adjusted really high… I love it and hate it at the same time
punk is the complete opposite. I don't know how those guys do it

@@8chk92 I think the guy wants to take a pill ?
A friend of mine, my former bassist, joined another band and used to open for the Kinks and said they aren't very nice. But nice musicians and good music don't always go together.
I air guitar and rock out to this when no one is looking. I'm particularly good at the solo.
Yes I'm sure! 👏🏻
¡¡Hermosa canción!! De mis favoritas ... oh, aquellos bellos tiempos. Gracias por compartir.
Beautiful thing, that. Great including the variety-show scarf-waving bowel-movement at the end, to help show how The Kinks still kick ass
you are worried about WINE and I've had much harder stuff LOL

Damn Straight!!!
Actually was from the show Shindig which was a crazy Rock and roll show from the 60's
Ray Davies has one of the best faces in the history of rock and roll. You know he's always up to something, that cheeky look!
What a band, never bettered. 🎸🎸. Loved all of their work, never get tiered of waiting.
Nothing new I can say to this: this is the best start for the next rock, grunge or heavy metal groups. Thanks a lot for these boys - super classic forever !
Old school days are in my life today .. just love these amazing songs from the best generations of music
I was in my early teens when they hit. and I I guess I loved their cutting edge stuff, the great solos and pure edgyness to their work. Thanks for the video.
Who in the world would dislike this song? Seriously? This Davies classic is the genesis of English R&B.
The British Invasion man... It was the best. Still is
This is how Heavy metal was born 🤘🏼🎸🔥
It was. They were indeed. The Kinks were very talented and one of the most popular bands of their era. This was probably partly due to the charisma of their front man.
what a great song even today 2016
It is really the mark of a well-written song that it could be reinterpreted by Van Halen going a different way with it and it still is rock solid
Great songs will always be great songs!
Haim Levy today all music is carbage.
Jobse dude. Your horizon is so narrow you could stick a toothpick in and it'd have doubled in width
carbage = waste materials thrown out of a high speed car??
@karlmorris-xz6iq ?
I heard this for the first time in 1964 on the BBC's "Top of the Pops" TV programme (in black and white) and have loved it ever since. I surely always will!
The screeching girls are hilarious. Now I understand the need for those Marshall stacks.
And durexes
Just FYI No Marshall stacks in these days, bro. (Cream and Hendrix brought them into the picture 3-4 years later.) You'd be amazed at how underpowered amps were during the British Invasion. One of the main reasons that the Beatles quit touring was that they couldn't hear themselves with all the screaming.
mikelisacarb .... Which is why I said I understood the need for Marshall stacks. In this video all you could hear is the screaming girls.
Mrsteisag2 Also, that was the best response I've ever read
+therealnightwriter Well yes we do believe in Santa Claus actually but thanks for your input

I saw Ray in the 90s in Stockbridge Massachusetts, performing his solo stuff as the whole front row reminded me of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, singing along and accompanying Ray!
The guitar lead on this is over the top!
That's Dave Davies.
They called him dave the rave, what do you expect?
Btw...Dave is 18 (!!!!!) years old here!
Why does this song sound so ahead of its time like around the 90’s
It truly does. What a song man
bcuz they cut their amps with razor blades that created a sound that we call "distortion" nowadays.
They have the potential to even kick "The Beatles" but misfortune led them wail towards downward ... They're the raw machine, pure talent, ✌️✌️✌️✌️
Dave's riff here puts this track into God tier territory. They (Ray & Dave) were feuding before the Gallagher boys were even born. Brothers have been going at it since Cain and Abel 🙂
The start of heavy metal😖😖☺️☺️
No, helter skelter was
The start of heavy metal would be Leslie West with Mountain. Kinks, sound more pop to me

After all this time, this song still shines, it seems incredible to think this was 1964 , 60 years ago in July Ray Davies recorded this song with the Kinks. Brilliant !
This is definitely when heavy metal was born. Power chords and all!!
Saw them in 1964 absolutely fabulous at the time. Even now the song is great. You could hardly hear them for girls screaming.

Hello Tslila, how are you doing?
If their tour had not been banned in the US in '65, who knows how big they would have been. And even with that they were STILL huge. They're right up there with The Who and Cream in my book.
This song took it she loves you off the charts
Brings me back to 7th grade when we would hang out after school and play all these songs on a little record player and everyone had a bunch of 45's.
There is something so epic about that tune. So simple, and yet it strikes a chord that seems to touch all generations. Something about the bluesy riff, the modulation and the dirty guitar distortion. This is a school example of how you write a smashing hit. They are rare though.
A very underrated band love the kinks
Only the Kinks and the Who were playing so hard at that time.
