- Demonstrating how to cut dovetail joints by hand. It takes time and patience but is well worth it for the results! The tails can be placed closer together than what is possible using a router bit. The specific type of dovetail joint in this video is a through dovetail.

That's great! I usually use either Tung oil with citrus thinner or Danish oil. Danish oil will dry faster than pure Tung oil.

I've never seen anyone cut an notch out of the tails back. Ive undercut my tails and pins on the inside but never on the backs. I must try it looks like it works. 👍😅
I've actually only just started with the notch. You need to angle the tail board down slightly to allow the line of notches to "catch" the top of the pin board. I'm not 100% convinced yet, as you still need to hold the tail board down rather firmly to keep it in place when marking the pins.
@@kiwiworkshop yeah I get you. I have a small 90 degree fence jig that I clamp in the vice to help keep them align when marking which I like but i was wondering if your notch would make things ever easier.

@@benenlynch9733 I don't think the notch has any benefits for assembly, it's simply there to help align the two components for marking. Another option is clamping a metal ruler on the back of the tail board inline with the marking line. I might try that next time to see if it works better than the notch. I've seen people use a fence to as you've described. But guess it won't work if the tails are slightly oversized? There is also obviously the rabbet (rebate) method but that seems like quite a bit of effort just to get the parts aligned.

Thanks! Over here I like to work with Rimu and Silver Beech mainly. For this video it was Pine and thermally modified Silver Beech for the dark wood.

Hey friend! Quick question for ya! I can't message you on TH-cam so I'm just gonna ask in comment lol. What's the easiest way to find an exact bevel angle?
Hey! For Dovetails, they are often expressed with ratios which is usually 1:6 (9.5 degrees) or 1:8 (7.1 degrees). You can find the exact angle by drawing a triangle on a piece of scrap with these ratios. i.e. draw a triangle with the square sides at 1 inch and 6 inches (or 1 inch and 8 inches). Make sure there is a square edge on your scrap wood and draw the 1 inch line directly on the square edge. Then take your sliding bevel (you see me use one in this video), push it up against the square edge of your scrap wood and adjust the angle until it matches the slope of your triangle. Hope that makes sense! If you google for dovetail ratios you will probably see some examples.

I see the glue as an insurance policy. Wood can be unpredictable and shrinkage could result in a weak joint. But you are correct, most of the time with a well cut dovetail joint, you could get away without glue.

Don't you hate it when you forget to put the glue on before you join then
With dovetails, it's a good idea to do a "test fit" before adding the glue. If you need to make adjustments, you really don't want to be doing it with glue on the joint!

The only reason I don’t do these types of joints is because of the math involved.
It's not too bad really and there is a method where you can use dividers to completely avoid doing any math.

I own a router but get more enjoyment from cutting joints by hand. When there is time of course!

No adjusting at all after the glue is added. Once it's glued up, that's it!

I would recommend watching TH-cam videos where someone steps you though step-by-step. If you search for "hand cut dovetails" in TH-cam, you will see some good videos by Rob Cosman, Matt Estlea and Jonathan Katz-Moses. You can also buy magnetic dovetail saw guides to help until you can saw without them. Jonathan Katz-Moses sells a popular one.
