The one mistake I made making this video is they were both recorded and uploaded in 1080p. Remastered is normally 1080p, but the remake is in 4k. Basically this video doesn't do it justice how good the remake looks and if you were viewing both games on your own monitor at home, you'd be able to tell a bigger difference as well.
Yeah and youtube seems to have used the avc1 codec instead of the superior VP09 which you automatically get while uploading content in 1440p and upwards.

@@luislebronaponte2737 Not sure what exactly you mean but I just checked again now it is in the higher quality VP09 codec I guess youtube just took its time processing it. Of course a 4K upload would be much preferable for a comparison but the original recording is in 1080p so what can you do.

24:48 Ellie looks so much more pissed and vindictive here in the remake, which is a much welcome change to me. My biggest problem with Ellie's model in the original is that she looks like a doll, and it really shows how much better she looks in the remake in this comparison.

I've played the remake twice now and Ellie didn't double flinch when Bill cuts the infecteds head off that's trapped in the window because she wasstood in the other room staring into space. Don't know if it was a bug or not but it was little details like that I loved in the original

29:15 features a fascinating change. The Remake look Joel gives Bill, then Frank's corpse, indicates to me that Joel is mature enough to grasp what 'partner' really means there to Bill. In the Remake he expresses some sorrow for being so callous even if not to Bill's face.

It's important to say that most of remastered cutscenes are prerendered videos, with the best quality at the time... And P1 cutscenes are all in game, real time and with higher resolution.
Yeah they were prerendered in the original but the cutscenes weren't graphically impressive for 2013. Look up Diablo 3 cutscenes those were probably the best prerendered cutscenes for any game at the time in 2012 no less. I feel like Naughtydog could have made the cutscenes look WAY better on the PS3 since they were prerendered. They real time cutscenes in P1 are way better tho In my opinion.
@@Lattrodon iirc the tlou ps3’s cutscenes use the same engine as the game instead of being rendered in a different rendering software with different, much higher quality assets like Diablo 3. Tlou’s cutscenes are the best possible graphics you could get while still having it look like the actual game because it uses the same assets.

The original fits the scene a lil bit better bc ellie doesn't feel that threatened and takes her time to explain her point. If she had the gun right at her face a normal person would cut words and explain in a more direct way. Leaving all question, pauses and eloquency behind, if they hired new writters for the remake then ellies reaction wouldve changed a bit. one of the details writters think about

I really wish Ant included some in engine cutscenes because to me that’s where the real difference comes in. In the original and even the remaster, there are many times where the character models look absolutely horrendous or just strange during in-engine cutscenes

Seriously, the remake is the definitive way to experience the game. I envy those who are walking into the remake completely blind, but even as for me who played the game before, playing the remake was like playing it again for the first time.

Didn't know they also changed the camera angle for some of the cutscenes.
Some angles are better than others and so are some body language and details like tess not directly pointing her gun at eille at the outskirts chapter (I think that was the name) which tells her character and nice case of body language which the remake reverses that and makes so she directly points it at her and joel with his backpack off during the interrogation scene during the lakeside resort chapter in the remaster unlike the remake where he does which I think the remaster did better

In the pre rendered scenes of the original, it seems they handcrafted some expressions in some scenes that made it slightly more believable in the original, but as a whole, the remake is better
I skipped around a bit to get a taste, and jesus christ the remaster looks like shit in real time comparison lmao. The graphics were fairly astounding when it came out! It's crazy how much tbings have advanced.
I beat the "remake" the other day. Great experience overall. Graphics are the biggest improvement and some gameplay elements.
Been playing the remake. ND did such a fantastic job. Definitely worth the $70.

Remastered has film grain which adds to the gritty look, you can adjust film grain in the remake but it looks like its turned off in this video

They definitely added a tinge of "shit, she caught me" surprise to his face. Possibly there to imply that look was the seed of doubt that would grow in Ellie's mind until TLOU 2.
I kinda prefer some of the cutscene angles on the original more than the remake tbh

I absolutely love this game. The remake looks amazing. But the 2014 just has that dark gritty feel to it. The 2022 things are just too smooth. The doors , windows, etc look brand new. Where in 2014. They are wore down and all marked up. Pros and cons to both. Bills Town and the University in 2022 just don't have the same feel as in the 2014 one .I will still play both.
am i the only one who prefers the original character models and graphics and overral art direction over the remake? with joel, he had this gritty look and feel in the original, like the years had literally fucked him out of every bit of hope he had, with the remake they're trying to replace him with the 'calm ang collected with his guard down' tlou 2 version, which doesnt serve the story of the first game well, the joel in the first one is not the one in the second game...the settings, the lighting, and the characters all had this dusty feel which helped the world look lived in, the remake's polished world makes it feel like a netflix series

Once again the film grain adds to the dusty and gritty feel you see in the remaster, you can adjust it in the remake but it looks like its turned off
@@MM-hi its not just the grain, the original's lighting is way more gritty too, it looks dark and unlit which works in its favor, the remake looks like a hollywood production with light bouncing off every character in perfect glamour...every single subject in the scene glows in light, it was more dumbed down, and realistic in the first one in my opinion, it wasnt afraid to let some unflattering dark spots slip in...also, i think when they tried to remake this, they focused too much on trying to make the facial expressions realistic that they went overboard, theres alot of ambiguity in how they look at eachother and talk in the original, whereas the remake puts it all on the line and tries to nitpick the facial animations to point of looking cartoonish, its like LA NOIRE, praised at release for being boundary pusghing in terms of "realistic" facial capture, and instead its all the characters moving every fucking mucle in their face conveying nothing; like point me at a person that acts like that in real life...less is more, and in the original you can see that, theres some scenes in the original where ellie's mixing multiple different emotions like in the garage in bills house asking joel what he wants to do, or in the district after she shoots the rifle and comes down; in the original, she has this look of unsureness whether she did good or not, and seeking validation from joel for how she did and she looks happy when joel hands her the gun, whereas in the remake apart from the dialogue, she just looks shocked that its even happening...the writing is there, the world is there, its the small moments that make the game what it is, is whats missing

Bill looks better in the original... he looks far more grizzled in that one than in the remake. Henry's old look also is better, but the remake makes his scenes so much more compelling.

Regarding the Sam and Henry death cutscene. Remasterd's Lower camera angle felt more cinematic and focused on the characters. While the Remake seems to want to just show off the pretty environments and that stupid gas stove. Like the remaster cutscene where Sam and Henry die. the focal points was Joel and Henry. another thought the blood splatter though realistic isn't necessary. Yeah i don't think this is the definitive version of TLOU

Even with YT compression and being in 1080p the Remake visual wise is far superior, lighting, character models, environments match up to what you should expect from a current generation game. I can see what people's issue is with the price as even though this is a remake and not a half assed remaster as is often the case, they don't have the initial costs involved in a new game/IP. The score, actors and a lot of the work has already been paid for, so to charge the same as a new game is a bit greedy, but this would have been the decision of Playstation publishing and not Naughty Dog.
The price is only an issue for a few months. It’s really a non-issue.
I still cannot understand why there are people out there who are complaining so much about the remake and think that the remaster looks better. There is much better lighting, more detail, more depth, and more textures. Not only that, but the facial expressions are so much more realistic than the remaster. Both are great in their own right, but I just don't understand how people can deny it looking better and think that the remake that is almost 10 years old looks better. Personally, I think that it doesn't look better than this remake.

I think it's probably because people who played this game when it came out are 25+
You see the same thing with older people preferring old cars compared to their newer objectively better counterparts. It's just younger people experiencing their first real nostalgic opinion, plain and simple.

I think it's clear now that Ellie cried in the end because she belived Joel and she was confused, all she wanted to do is to help the world and end the suffering that she witnessed throughout her life first hand, and now she was told that they "ain't done a bit of good either". I think it broke Ellie inside and not just a little. That was the cost of Joel saving her and keeping his humanity, by not letting another child of his die. He destroyed, not only the world's hope for redemption but Ellie's hope too. It's really tragic and thought proviking as it shoud be

I prefer the remaster character models but the scenery is way better in the remake. I also prefer the remaster version of the gameplay.
@@lotus2001 how is it insane? Its my honest opinion mate, I find the part 2 gameplay clunky and annoying. I also prefer the character models from remaster because I played that game for a long time. If I hadn't played last of us then that opinion would be different. But half the characters are now not recognisable, so even though the character models are more detailed in part 1 I still prefer last of us remastered.

Thanks for the video. I think you did right to record in 1080p, as most players like myself don't have a 4K tv. I play in HD with my ps5, the difference is huge from the remaster not only with the graphics but game play as well.
PS I have now uninstalled my remaster I only play the remake.

There was a certain aesthetic they lost. Also, Joel is this game. I hope people don't get confused by the picture on the cover. Graphics in the environs look nice tho for a remaster. I'd drop 20 for it. 40 if the multiplayer is included. Also, thank you for this Mr caliber.

The original had a style and a proper aesthetic, the new one just put the AD of the second one which is completely out of place with the tone of the first game!

like says below pre rendered is not were can test a game todays hard ware ,,,,,pre rendered means you could have ray tace and all that jazz in pre rendered cut scene ( pre rendered means jpg format unlike 3d ) u can see in the game th leaps made ps3 version to ps5 includes low poly geometry which can see n on cylinders ..also u can see the volumetric lighting in ps5 verson trhe partices lin air ,,ect ecrt... you just testing the art on jpeg there ,,,,,, that all ( have look in the actaul game rather than stills off the internent

Watched Ant's playthrough in its entirety and got convinced that as a regular PS5 player not picking this game day 1 was a good choice.

I prefer the pre-rendered cutscenes from the original, the colour grading is richer and more vibrant.
Also Maria on Remaster 2x times better than remake since on the remake facial expressions are completely off. And she looks like extremely young/starving woman.

People here who are saying the remaster looks more gritty or dusty or whatever need to realise that the film grain is giving it that effect and it cant be turned off. In the remake you have the option of turning it on or off and adjusting it to your liking. It looks like its turned off in this comparison

Well... You do realize that roughly 50% of your entire experience with The Last Of Us is with the use of your eyeballs, right?... Unless you're blind, then fine, but even better if you're blind, because now you can actually play this game! It's like people equate this to like a well presented restaurant meal, but like... You don't EAT a meal with your eyeballs, but you do use your eyeballs to consume video games...
The visual update to this game ("visual update" btw meaning literally everything your eyeballs take in) accomplishes more shit than just "looking nice" and the only people pretending otherwise are the most ignorant people on the planet or they're lying to you. And the people underplaying exactly how much this does are also ignorant.
And the cherry on top is that this remake is not just a visual update, so frankly there's no leg to stand on here, this remake is just unobjectionably better than the original and I think the reason for most complaints about it that AREN'T made in bad faith mostly just stem from people being familiar with the original and so have an automatic response in their brains to seeing it portrayed even slightly differently. It really is just better. There are plenty of remakes where the visual upgrade doesn't actually accomplish much of anything, this is not even remotely close to being one of those.
Some of the models look worse in the remake... The characters may look more realistic, but the artstyle is worse than in the original in most instances. Say what you want, the cashier at my store os "photorealistic", but I don't want him as the protagonist of my game.
Joel looks great on the remaster. Ellie, Sara and Tess, on the other hand, look worse.
Backgrounds are amazing though.

@@MarkEstratocaster That's just delusional. I've yet to see a bad looking character model in the game. You thinking they look worse is entirely subjective to you but most people from what I can tell don't think this. Look at the cutscene where Tess is bribing the dude with ration cards for info on Robert. You honestly believe that THAT cutscene looks better than the remaster version? That spot and many others in the game, if you paid attention, looked fucking AWFUL. And this remake is a testament to what they wanted to do with the game from the very beginning but couldn't because of the lack of technology at the time and it being a ps3 game. Sarah and Ellie no longer look like dolls and Tess actually looks her age now. The only characters that might look worse are characters you likely don't see often in the first place. But even then most of those look better as well if even just slightly.
Not to mention the emotions are enhanced greatly in many places due to the newer models and them being able to express more with their faces. Something the old models didn't do and couldn't have done if they wanted to. I see all the time people saying "oh the remastered game still looks and plays great even today". Plays better, yeah definitely. One of the bigger criticisms I'll give this is that they mostly copy and pasted part 2's controls and combat which were notoriously clunky and unresponsive. Yoranto who's another TLOU speedrunner quit the game before even starting a single run because the controls were pissing him off. Looks better? HELL no. Just, HELL no.
Looking at the remake and then looking at the remaster is like looking at a Da Vinci painting and then looking at something a toddler made with finger paint. Yeah, remake aside the game still does look good. But now it's disingenuous to honestly look at the remaster and still believe it to be the superior LOOKING game when we have the remake to compare it to. The way the remake looks is the most significant upgrade second only to the fact that pretty much anybody can play the game now thanks to the accessibility settings.
Credit for having a different, more reasonable criticism than "this was only made because part 2 bombed and made no money" or complaining about the price tag though. It doesn't feel like most people approach this game with any objectively BAD things about the remake. It's funny nobody mentions the gameplay because it's like the one thing most people could logically agree on in that the game took a downgrade in quality of playing for realism.

If I remember correctly, ellie looked way more like Elliot in the original release, some legal stuff happened(?) or like Naughty Dog heard concerns so they changed her face for the remaster. Changed it again in Pt II and now again in the Remake.
