This is a thought provoking piece. The most telling line was early on [paraphrasing], "There is no single statue in England that was erected in honour of someone being a slave owner, profiting from slaves or transporting slaves." Thanks Dr. Starkey for a powerful lesson in remembrance. The past is more complex than we think...

Mr. Starkey if you're reading this: Please retell the story about how the Royal Navy smashed the global slave trade in the early 19th century. It would make a great BBC or Channel 4 TV miniseries, but there's no chance of that because the tale doesn't fit their narrative.

Britains involvement in the Empire v France, Germany is a non contest in respect of what we left behind to the new governments who took over on independence. Cities, infrastructure, legal system and an international language. Could we have been more caring and sharing with the indigenous population? Of course but that was 1850, and can we judge actions then by standards now? It is absurd to think so but if anyone considers there is an issue with former African colonies then just compare their trajectory over the last 50 years with that of Singapore.

The thing I adore with David Starkey and the reason why it has already been noted by fellow subscribers that he is indeed a national treasure, is that his discussions are not only informative but also stimulative. In this case, what I particularly found interesting was not only that the biggest proponents of liberty were the slave-owners themselves, but also there is a recognisable pattern that has formed. Please forgive the cliche that history repeats itself, but looking at this historical pattern from a broader context, merging between the psychological and sociological schools of thought, there does appear to be more than a trend for rich and powerful men to align themselves with radical thoughts and revolutionary ideas for their current era. These are ideas that would not have has the required propellant, be it their patron’s wealth and contacts in high society, to get them off the ground. In the following century, on a different scale, Friedrich Engels, a wealthy factory owner, rather ironically supports Karl Marx. Even all the way back in time to Ancient Rome, wealthy men like Seneca are promoting stoicism, a philosophical doctrine in sharp contrast to the Imperial rule of Emperor Nero at the time. Even the Emperor Constantine, centuries later, radically changing pretty much everything from the capital, to splitting the Empire, to changing to the previously persecuted Christianity. Fast forward to the twentieth century, arguably largely shaped by Marx’s ideas on one side, and Henry Ford, the industrialist on the other. Which leads into our own times, where we now have a fair selection of New Tech barons toying with ideas which to most of us seem repugnant, but which are nevertheless enforced on us. A sad reminder that governments are not there to serve the people, but to control the people. So whilst the media circus of the Greta Thornburgs of the world, and the Remoaners, and the Metropolitan Elite, and the Woke Brigade, and the SJWs, BLMs, Extinction Rebellion, plus all the celebrities bricking themselves in case they get cancelled and who play along with the current charade, well… eventually the circus will move along. I don’t know what we’ll be left with, I can’t predict the future, but as much as I understand from what DS has explained about this aspect of history, there will be some new wealthy people who will attach on to some noble idea in the hope of gaining their immortality in the pages of history.

Aspirations of attaining excellence; beauty; TRUTH; have been replaced with the tastes of the lowest common denominator, because ultimately, advertisers can shift more product that way. We've become fat and lazy and will drift into the dark, glued to our screens, absorbing nonsense/propaganda. Well, I certainly shan't -- I'll go out fighting! Thanks so much Dr Starkey. By having the intellect, resolution, energy and courage to drill down to the simple truth you are playing a key role in discrediting the pedlars of untruths. It is not usually mentioned that by dismantling these statues one is also insulting and attacking the communities, who were responsible for their erection in the first place. We act as if we have a divine right to do this.

When one views people of the past through the narrow lens of current-day sensibilities applied without humility or empathy it not only diminishes one's self but robs others of the opportunity to appreciate their own past.

Wonderful. Thank you, Dr Starkey. And yes. I was nodding along like crazy at your introduction. Because the way the statue destruction brigade talk, we should only erect statues to faultless paragons of virtue.
Which means that we'd have no statues at all. Because even the people that they would want to erect statues to will have had their faults and failings. Because that's part of being human.

Thank you David for providing us with this. All your life's work free and given with such passion. I love history and I have found it so sad that so many people don't see it's relevance or how fascinating it is. How do you know where you are if you don't know where you have come from?
