Also Something I have come to learn which may be a pretty high on the list (close to or maybe even #1) the dropped valve issue these engines seem to have around the 115k mark for the early ones, Going to be getting into the engine of this beast soon and showing how to possibly prevent that, I hope we can git that done before she blows up! , timing belt how to coming soon as well!

Fair points, but these are all pretty trivial things considering the Jeep's purpose.I'm really happy with my Jeep 2.8 Diesel CRD (manual). The central console window buttons are okay where they are, no big deal.I also drive a Ford Ranger 4x4, and a Jaguar S Type; but I quickly adapted to the Jeep's layout. Many cars have ergonomic variations.Off road, the Ranger was a worthy, reliable pick up: but the Jeep has gone places where the Ranger struggled. It is just brilliant in snow, water, ice, mud, grass etc. A few weeks ago, I ploughed through deep powder like it wasn't there. I only went to '4 High' and it climbed effortlessly.

I can’t believe you’re real. You hate the transmission because you’re afraid it may fail??? You should add tyres to your hate list because they may blow. Also you should hate suspension because you will need to fix it at some point. The trailer hitch - just open the damn door -couple it then shut them. As for the most of the rest I’m pretty sure that it was easy to spot before buying.

I ordered a Jeep Liberty KJ in 2001 when they first came out. As a kid my uncle had a Willy's Jeep Overland wagon and the Liberty reminded me of that in an updated version. This, the fact Daimler owned them now, and the fact I needed a retirement gift for my wife combined for me to order one just the way I wanted it for us, and Jeep didn't miss a thing! Got it all spot on and we took delivery of it in Oct 01. That was 17 years ago and I have no regrets. It's a fine vehicle. I've owned two Lincoln Navigators, a Toyota Rav 4, and a Ford King Ranch F150 in that 17 years all which came and went but the KJ is still here! Why? It's been great! Overall it's a great rig and I've owned some of the greats and could buy whatever I wanted. I've owned a XJ also and frankly like the Liberty much much better all around. Don't get me started. If you are into building yeah maybe then the XJ but most don't mess with this.
Being a senior citizen I owned two FJ40 LandCruisers and a FJ62 LandCruiser from 88 as vehicles we had to have living on the reservations treating the Indian natives when we were in the Indian Health Service and we've had this Liberty we own now on all the same exact pinon and high mountain goat trails as we used those tank LandCruisers on including the same trails in four corners USA and in Utah, AZ, NM and various places in Colorado including Telluride and you know what? I'd rate the Liberty as very capable at all elevations, in all climates and on all trails! On trails in AR where I've had numerous other vehicles I've owned at a farm we have frequented for many years as well as those mentioned I'd rate the Libby in the top five for how it handled that trail overall! We call this the back way out because it's a goat trail and only used when the river is too high to get out at the spillway. The times we had to use it the Liberty pulled through like a champ each time. Anyone that says the Liberty isn't a real Jeep doesn't know one and certainly hasn't driven one properly equipped for some trails! Trust me they certainly are the real deal. And one more thing> I've been to the Jeep dealers since Fiat bought them and I see nothing they offer now that even compares to the Jeep we own. I'd never let go of a Daimler Jeep if you have one. No wonder Jeep won't leave me alone wanting it back.
Jeep ruined a prime op though and should have been hung for missing the golden opportunity to mesh the legendary Jeep with the legendary Mercedes diesel engines. They could have made history and we'd have something to truly brag on then but the Liberty has earned some praise in my opinion. The good news is some companies are starting to recognize the deal Jeep Liberties offer and are now offering a lot of upgrades and add ons on the used markets. These are one of the best deals in used cars and particularly the best years of 04 through 06. I'd suggest after owning my 02 that those are the best years and when (note not if) I buy my next one it will be one from 05 if I can find it Also, get the leather seats if you can find one. Well worth it over cloth. Mine have held up like a champ and another thing to the maker of this video. The center console controls for the window thing is a copy of the Lincoln Navigator. They were trying to make a luxury mini-Lincoln type classic in a Limited. My 06 Navigator was laid out exactly like the Jeep Libby we own. Other than the Alpine stereo instead of Infinity as in my Jeep they matched up apples to apples for feature to feature even down to the controls for the stereo on the steering wheel.

Troy Taylor I got lucky here in Oregon when I was on the market for a Jeep. I almost bought an 06, but it was sold the day before and instead I bought my all white (in regards to the fender paint as well) 05 liberty Limited CRD I’m about to have the transmission solenoids replaced and the ball joints. But honestly those weren’t as expensive as the dealerships will make them seem. I love the vehicle and looking back on it, I wouldn’t want to have any other Jeep.

    1. Back windows break and fall down ...
    2. Back tailgate window lever/pump fails and falls down to hit me in the head lol ...
    3. Diesel is expensive now ...
    4. Suspension can break when it gets wet apparently. I bought mine used and found out later that the suspension was all busted.
Best things: 1. It's reliable, especially in the winter with all wheel drive!
    2. It's great for hauling trailers.
    3. It's big enough to fit an ice shack inside plus lots of gear and my dog! :)

I thought it was a pamby jeep from the first time I saw one but I have borrowed one from a friend and been driving and working on it for a few months and I love the way it drives and rides and pulls, and I feel like a hefty man when I am driving it. I am surprised you haven't had the pot metal connector between your ignition key tumbler and your ignition switch break yet. The one on this jeep has been replaced 3 times. If this was my jeep, the first thing I would do would be to bypass the ignition key, leave it on, drill and pin it in place, and work the circuits with a tidy little homemade console of on/off toggle switches and a momentary ignition button. Then I would never get stranded again because some engineer had to get to his golf date. I'm an engineer, so I know. I might get stranded from my jeep being stolen because no key is needed, but that would be less frustrating than the thingy breaking inside the column cover.

Thank you for a very helpful video. We're looking to add a small, inexpensive 4x4 SUV to our garage and the Liberty is probably at the top of the list right now. All vehicles have their weaknesses but unfortunately most owners are very reluctant to admit flaws in their vehicles of choice, so it can be very difficult to do research because stuff like this is rarely mentioned in reviews. My 2005 Jeep Liberty with CRD 2.8L engine now has 276,000 miles on it with no major problems. I use biodiesel whenever available and I'm certain it has protected the pump and injectors all this time. I also use Howes fuel treatment or something similar with every other fill up. I took it to the dealer for the timing belt changes at the 100,000 mile marks. The transmission fluid and filter was changed at irregular intervals but never more than 80,000 miles. Both rear window regulators are now needing replacement but that is the only failure I've had.
None of his "hates" are an issue to me. The auto locking cargo door is an annoyance but I have learned to just unlock it before I go back there or keep my remote key with me. That trailer hitch is upside down. The trailer hitch on the ball should be lower than the trailer bed. That transfers weight to the vehicle. If it is higher it can result in trailer swaying and a crash.
I like mine so much I'm hoping to find a second one to drive when the day comes for my engine to need an overhaul. It starts and runs so good now, I'm certain I'll get at least two more years use of it before engine needs a rebuild.
With General GrabberAT tires it will go through deep snow that can give a Wrangler difficulty. I have pushed through snow drifts as high as the headlights so to me it qualifies as a real Jeep. Not with the factory tires, they were terrible. Mine has the 4x4 with two systems, it is called the Select Trac. It cost more than the basic 4x4 system but is more flexible for use on roads with mixed ice and bare pavement. I can set it in all wheel drive and forget it.

    • @GitItGarage
      @GitItGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

I honestly love mine! I just got a 2nd one as a project! My trailer needs the hitch to be at that height, I hadn't towed with it yet at that point. but the spare tire is in the way just barely, or the trailer will not be level when towing, Previous owner towed a cargo trailer across the country and that jeep has been to the highest point you can drive and the lowest point in the country , Its a great little 4x4 I also have the Select Track and its very capable, I think with a locking rear and or front differential it would be unstoppable

  • @dannyr403
    @dannyr403 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The trailer hitch was added as a safety recall. These jeeps were blowing up when rear ended because of the location of the gas tank. Adding a trailer hitch was easier and less expensive than relocating the gas tank. It will absorb a good amount of the impact now, hopefully. I have an 04 Liberty, 5 speed. I love it. This is probably pretty late but the ball is upside down on the hitch. Just take the ball off and put it on the other side and you shouldn't have problems with not being able to hook on to the hitch. The angled part of the hitch should go down rather than up which is why the tire kept getting in the way.

The 2002 KJs have the 45rfe transmission which is practically bulletproof behind the 3.7, I've drag raced my KJ and never had an issue with the torque converter. Later KJs have the terrible 42rle transmission, but if you get a manual equipped one you'll be fine.

Mine is for SALE. 2006, 86,000 miles!!! I was a contractor in OIF and OEF and spent 7 years in the sandbox and another 18 months on Kwajalein Atoll and the truck was in storage.
New July 2018 Garrett Turbo charger, new silicone rubber intercooler hoses.
    New July 2018 alternator.
    New 2016 Fuel pump.
2018 GREEN DIESEL ENGINEERING FULL TORQUE TUNE!!!!!
    2018 GDE TRANSMISSION TUNE.
Rebuilt transmission with Florida Transmission Billet Torque Converter.
    New 2018 front wheel bearings.
When I returned after two years in Afghanistan the engine had oil leaks from sitting. Spring 2015 every seal and gasket was replaced; including front and rear mains.
At that time the timing belt was also replaced at 65,000 miles.
A/C swtches were replaced. Everything works
NO LIMP NODE. GDE fixed that!! Florida truck. Transplanted from New England.

I own a 2004 KJ Jeep in Australia. Transmission tunnel does not cause a problem as we drive on the opposite side. I agree with the front pillar blocking vision. My main issue has been Overheating on trails on hot days (Aussie summers can be commonly 38-44.C) Besides that it is a capable car and a heap of fun to drive.

This past September, I bought a 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD, with 55,000 miles. I needed a vehicle to get to work, and the jeep was in my price range, it had low mileage, it looked good, and I liked it. The sales guy sold me on it being cool because it is rare and better fuel economy since it is a diesel.
3 months and 2500ish miles later, it is in the shop for an issue with the steering, and what ever else they found. Right now the bill is well over $1000 and that is before they can determine if the power steering pump needs to be replaced.
I wish I would have looked more into this vehicle before I purchased it. Your number 1 reason for not liking the CRD probably would have made me really consider my purchase.
After it is fixed and I get it back, I am considering selling it. I don't do any off roading, so part of me thinks that it is less likely to have any issues since it won't be used and abused. That is the part of me that likes it and wants to keep it. The other part of me knows I can't afford more costly repairs. Looking more into the CRD, the turbo is something to consider that would be expensive to repair.
Maybe there is someone out there that wants to buy a CRD and give it the love, attention, off roading fun, and money it needs.

If reliability is what ur looking for I'd would have not suggested a liberty more like a little civic or corolla
The jeep is a jeep it was built to be rugged not built to last years and years with no worries the honda civic though oh man talk about easy of repair cost I wouldn't sell the jeep because of one repair but I definitely pick another mechanic I've never once spent a grand on a power steering pump for mine so quite odd ask for a detailed receipt and description on what they did

I have a '02 Jeep Liberty Limited Four-wheel drive, that I bought in 2003 with 12k miles on it. This is (still) the best vehicle I have owned! I have had 3 Camaros, 3 Vans (Dodge and Chrysler Town and Country) 2 Trucks, 1 car and a 2015 Honda Civic coupe which I bought brand new and still own. The Liberty continues to perform admirably. I recently changed out the radiator, water pump and thermostat. And at 80K, I changed out the Serpentine belt. IT gets a oil change every 4K. This vehicle now has 108K for a 20-year vehicle. I recommend saving your money, do the basic maintenance and take it to the dealer when something majors needs fixing. I have and 5 retirees' wanting to buy my Jeep from the gas station, because they want to tow it behind their RV's. It can seat 4 and its a rig that can tow and has four-wheel drive capabilities. Just my IMO, maybe I got lucky on this vehicle, but it has never given me an issue. Good luck to you!!!!!!

You totally nailed it on the 10 dislikes on the 2005 jeep liberty CRD! Especially the one about the tailgate locking if you have acute hearing which I have and you roll your jeep forward or backward one tire turn you will hear the mechanism lock and henceforth you have to either unlock it at the door or go back and have your key with you and hit the remote lock it is such a pain. The other issue I seem to have a lot of is the gate valve problem on the turbo diesel on the turbo. It seems to stick if you put your foot into the Excelerator and open it up or put it under too much stress like at 4000 RPM or 3500 suddenly it will stick and then you get a check engine light in absolute poor performance until that is rectified I have found a bottle of sea foam in the tank takes care of that issue and I haven’t had a problem since I have done that treatment

The window switches being in the console and the auto lock on the back door and window really do suck. I've had my liberty for about 3 months now and still lock the doors everytime I go to roll the window down. Spare tire is too close to the receiver hitch but a trip to our local salvage yard was able to find a piece of square tubing and easily make an extension. Nothing worth making a TH-cam video to bitch about. On a hi note ..... I've never been in any other vehicle with colder AC than our liberty. So it's cool by default right

I bought a nice low mileage unit and spent over $7000 on repairs over 2 years. It had literally been owned by a little old lady that replaced it with an Escape. After working on it constantly I sold it for $5500 with still less than 100K on it. Most expensive vehicle to maintain I have ever owned. it left my possession with both the engine and transmission replaced with "new" units. The buyer called me 11 months later wanting warranty information on the 3.7. It had thrown a rod.

The rougher shutdown I believe is due the no longer having the fcv in place as it was supposed to slow the flow of air during shutdown. They redid the torgue converter and also detuned the engine so it would not have as much torque, on mine I think they may broken the tranny dipstick tube and there is one bolt c/m to the bell housing you can't get to for firewall clearence so I leave it broken. The electric windows break the plastic regulator real easy however there is this guy who builds a metal replacement repait kit for it. You prolly don't need ac much up there but down here that is a plus to having diesel as it does quite well at idle. I have had about 6 recalls on it, the worst being tourqe recall. Simply flip the hitch insert and have the ball uprighted and you're good to go. You're gonna be needing some PB Blaster for sure on that ball nut, and I'd recommend uprighting the ball while keeping the neck mounted in your receiver hitch, so as to lend you some necessary stability while you have to crank on that nut.

We bought one in June 2017. For the most part we love it. . But there are issues. The oh shit handles are in a weird position in front of you that doesn't brace you that well. Having to take the tire off when you use a trailer is a very poor design flaw. The steering wheel always seems to be a position to block the top of the speedometer, making me duck or peek over to see speeds between 40 and 80 or so. The part where the metal body meets the plastic molding under the back doors is a water trap and already on the way to rusting out. It doesn't like hills at low RPMs, mine seems to want to accelerate up or it feels bogged.
But I don't regret buying it. With AT tires it's a little boss on trails, it's comfortable on the road and easy to get around in. We call it the Mud Midget.
