100% agree on the real work wear vs heritage work wear. 40 years in commercial construction business last 20 as project supervision nothing but Carhartt and Red Wing model #2533 on site for me. Off-site 1620 work wear and Nicks Americana boot
Another great one Carl! Fun fact -- the chore coat has "butcher buttons" because they are meant to be taken off for easy laundering! Also, I'd assume the indigo model is a bit more expensive since the natural one didn't have to take a trip to the dye house.
It looks like the reason Best Made's chore is so expensive is due to the custom high hemp content blend and coming from Tuscarora Mills -- I'm working with them now on some custom denim and it's a good bit more expensive than Japanese denim AND hemp is much more expensive than cotton on top of that. They are also producing in a factory in NYC which has a fantastic reputation but since Best Made doesn't own their facility like Bradley Mountain the cut and sew is probably a lot more expensive too (nevermind the fact that NYC is super expensive for production anyway). I also think Best Made is doing things in very small runs at the moment which further drives the prices up. I'd imagine the cost for them to produce that jacket is close to the cost of Bradley Mountain's retail price! That being said...I wish they came out with more clothes/released a bit more. The first run wasn't what I built it up to be in my head. They were one of my favorite brands a while back (although I only bought their Dehen collab).

I' done with Filson. There are made in USA options for half the money and their name has been stained by moving out of U.S. manufacturing and doubling the price.

@@curtshelp6170 Their stuff is still tough, but it is not going to be the same price as random cheap brands. It is about the iconic Filson brand and style. The days of it being for loggers is long gone.

When I was notified about Filson's newest edition I looked at it and said "nah I'll just stick to Carhartt for a work coat". Also Carl for the other channel when you do the flannel round-up I think you should get a brand called Outerknown. I don't think I've seen you with one of their blanket flannels. OMG I love love it!
Carhartt is a cheap version of Filson. If you want a much cheaper, more common, less stylish brand then buy it!

Second, Outerknown. Not because I own any of their blanket flannels, but just because I've been eyeing for a while now. Not that they have a wide variety of colourways, including monochrome ones.

Funny thing I’ve been in a multiple email convo with Best Made, not about their price ( which is admittedly very high, especially coming from a brand whose most recent products were utter shite) but about sizing, specifically the lack of garment dimensions in the description of the Studio Jacket. I hate it and refuse to buy from sites that refuse to post them, why is this?! I understand that most sellers/makers will allow slight variation in measurements, but that caveat is pretty much always stated, and understood by the purchaser. Two sites that immediately come to mind as stellar examples of good description are History Preservation and Rodeo Japan. Thanks Carl!

I have a good bit of Filson that I bought deeply disconnected but even at 50+% off it's debatable if it's worth it. I still like some of their wool but wouldn't pay full price but I also think that fjallraven is probably a better rugged outdoor brand at this point
I use a pair of tin cloth upland brush pants from Filson as a brewer in NC. They have currently lasted longer than any other pant I’ve tried out. They are waterproof and are holding up well in the crotch and knees (where my pants tend to fail first). Interested to see if I get the price per wear to make them worth it, they were on sale when I got them.

Fjallraven does the double layered butt too. I believe on the Vida Pros, so you can sit anywhere without getting wet. But idk why Filson did it.
If I was a betting man, I'd say the double lining on the Filson pants could be geared more towards their new ads where theyre targeting more of the ranching community similar to Carhartt's Montana series.
Um...those ads featuring ranchers are targeting the investment banker and attorney market, not actual ranchers.

I’ve learned that if you are patient you can get the item you want from Iron Heart on sale. If it’s really popular maybe not but I bought a lot of stuff from SS 24 on sale.
You know you dont NEED but are probably going to want to check out? IEMs. The most affordable rabbithole in audio imo. Not a headphone guy and can’t blast my speakers half the time so they’re great for my use cases

I have given up on Filson. Does the vest have an aluminum zipper for $495.00 plus? I have always wanted their double Makinaw. Now Stormer Krommer has one for $495.00.
Try reselling that Stormer Kromer and see how you do, the Filson will go up in value, the other brand will go down.
I'd rather pay $350 for an alpaca sweater than $700 for the vest directly before it.
The Best Made jacket was kind of an odd choice for a first comeback apparel piece. The selvedge fabric is dramatically more expensive to have made than the duck that Bradley Mountain is using (The Iron Snail said selvedge denim is 4x the cost of projectile loom denim), but that doesn't explain the cost entirely. Stylistically it falls into a no-mans land IMO where it looks too much like a casual sportcoat rather than a chore coat, and the lighter color fabric will for sure scare some people off.
Right now sport coats/jackets and chore coats/jackets are both very much trendy right now and always will be to some extent because they're classics). Chore coats have been in for a while and are starting to fade out of the core trendy group while sport coats are just coming in again. I also think the light grey denim is more versatile(great for dressing up casual cloths or dressing down more business styles) and will patina better than the white. One fashion trend at the moment is so-called "Formal Streetwear" that plays on the juxtaposition of styles that would have belonged to different strata of the class structures of the past(mixing workwear with business with hip hop) within one outfit. I like the look of the Best Made, but the value really comes down to the build quality. If it's Iron Heart levels of build, then the price would be entirely justified, but the problem is that as a first product it's a lot of money to gamble!
@@iancameron1495 I do agree we've crested the popularity of chore coats, I guess my problem is with "hybrid" pieces like the Best Made jacket in general - I think to 99% of the public (outside of big cities), it will read as a white 3-button sportcoat, which has a limited audience. It definitely wasn't what I was expecting for a first release from Best Made, not the kind of thing that goes with the outdoorsy woodsman vibe they're cultivating, again all in my opinion. Not having cuff buttons, either functional like a chore coat or nonfunctional like most sportscoats, was a weird choice.
I’m so ugly I always have to turn the auto focus off on my cameras cause, if I’m in the picture, my camera wants to focus on everything but me. I suppose it’s possible the double layer seat on the Filson pants is targeted at heavy equipment operators who spend most of their time sitting. I mean that makes as much sense as anything else I suppose. You could almost start a short series called Filson Failure Friday at this point, lol. I think the green sweater looks wonderful (sucker for green myself).

Filson hit it out of the park with the pants. They managed to identify the only place desk jockies like me wear out their pants and reinforced it! This was sarcasm, but really, it seems a little absurd. The only reason I could think of is if you've ever blown out pants in the seam near the rear end/crouch. Maybe that's why, but it is rather weird.

I gotta be honest, some double layer seats would have been nice in the military. Boat decks will chew through pants and the back was always the first to go.
I think that the Best Made jacket is much more versatile than the chore coat. It's a three button sports coat with an appropriate lapel. So it can be used as a casual piece as well as in a more formal occasion.
The new Filson Worksmith range looks awesome, especially the jackets. For the pants, CEOs in Range Rovers will absolutely need two layers on their butt. These are a fashion items for NYC, not for actual physical work!

The Best Made Studio Selvedge is the clear winner. It just has a better design and fit, not to mention quality. It's selvedge, and great marketing photos. Filson nailed it with the color of the Worksmith Insulated Bomber, but of course it going to be more expensive. I think it looks good, and will last.
