Hi Jen, I just found your channel and you are such a good seamstress. I really like the way you will sew it your way and then show us how the pattern asks us to do it. I've already learned things from you. Thank you so much for taking the time to put these videos together. I am really excited to see more.
Oh JEN. THANK YOU!!! I am so excited. My oldest son is getting married in St.Augustine the end of July. On the beach. I am going to make 2 of these. One pink, one blue with fabric from Hawaii fabric mart. This will be the first outerwear I have made in 30 years. I make matching pjs for me and granddaughters but I am beyond excited. And I guess I didn't really realize the sew along you were doing was this pattern. It's just perfect. Perfect perfect. Thank you so very much 💖
Just bought this pattern because of how beautiful the dress style looks on you and your raving about the pattern! LOVE the loose fit, hemline and your pockets. The addition of the piping around the pockets, at the bodice seam and the use of bias tape at the hemline on your dress really adds a lot to the style! Stunning!!! Thank you so much for your sew-along video of this pattern, explaining your construction processes and reasoning. Can't wait to go looking for fabric to make one. 5-star sewing video, Jen!!!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Well I have been watchinf your videos for quite a while................ well today watched you sew a thon, for pattern 8640. I ordered the pattern tonight. I am anxous to try it out. Thank you
Thanks, Jen! It’s in my queue, ready to be cut out. Love, love the dress. And thank you for all the work. It’s nice to see someone sew the traditional ways, like marking notches on the outside of the seam, not clipping into the seam. If I’m overlooking it, I’ll clip, if I’m not, I won’t. Love it, thanks again. I really like the shaping this dress offers.
Good job on the sew along! I LOVE this version. The piping and the length and the print all come together for a dress that could go to a summer wedding or a back yard BBQ. So pretty Jen!
Thank you very much. Love sewing. I love learning short cuts and new techniques even more. Your direction was very easy to understand, a first for me....lol. THANKS AGAIN!!!!
Purchased this pattern and getting ready to cut out the view with sleeves using a bold floral seasonal fall cotton fabric. Hopefully it will look good!! Thank you for this tutorial. It's been awhile since I sewed anything and watching this really motivated me to dust off my sewing machine.
Oh, Jen you are so inspiring. I watched this vlog a couple of weeks ago and then ordered the pattern. It was out of stock in England so had to wait for it to be delivered yesterday! I’ve been sewing it today and nearly finished but I’m going to put flutter sleeves in it. I wear a compression sleeve and although I love sleeveless dresses I wanted something that was cool but would hide the top of my arm. Thanks for inspiring me😀
Omgosh Jen that turned out so stinkin pretty! The piping really took it to the next level. Great help and instructions. You made it look easy so I have to try it!!!! Thank you so much!!!!
You matched the center front of that bodice absolutely beautifully. The dress is lovely. You created a great sew along. I really like that you showed so many options. These sew alongs must be a lot of work to create but yours was really good.
First time I've watched a sew along where I never saw the person at their machine sewing. I didn't even realize that til the end. Loved this. You explained everything perfectly. I look forward to viewing the rest of your videos. Happy sewing.
Hi Jen... I love love this tutorial.. This is an easy pattern and I haven't sewn much in years and you have refreshed so many things for me. I have made 1 I don't like the pockets either. I will be changing them too.. I love the piping.it really emphasizes the V ... thanks for lengthening It.. I will be making more of these too..FANTASTIC.. You inspire me . I look forward to Friday sews every week.. I even have that fabric in Lime green ! I'm sew excited to get at it now.. Thank you Thank you thank you..!!!!!!
I've been holding on to this pattern for a couple of years. I've been sewing face masks for people, and finally got back into sewing. I have two great fabrics I've had for a while that I want to try this on. Your ideas about the pockets cinched it for me - being a short person I didn't want those pockets around my knees. Going to try this on a beautiful fabric I bought in Hawaii some years ago, and some gorgeous embroidered linen I purchased about 15 years ago. I love your video. Will continue to watch more.
I spied hawaii dress 2 😍 Great sew a long! Thank you for showing the facings!! That's my nemesis! Maybe woven will be easier? But next time I'll watch your video for sure!😍 love the piping! That dress is beautiful❤ you said bias binding at the end.. Loving my bias binding on my coverstitch! I hope you saw my video☺ is sooo fun!
Thank You for the sewing tutorial ! I'm going to make this dress ! because of your great teaching, I understand ! Yes I am new to this sewing , Please more sewing tutorials
Thank you Jen I just finished watching your sew along simplicity 8640 and love your dress so much. My local spotlight store is all sold out so I found it online it was the last one this seller had on ebay brand new, so I will give it a go I have not made any clothes in over 20yrs you have inspired me to pull out my sew machine and give it a go :) thanks so much Tracy from Australia
Great sew along. I made mine from a solid linen and cut a one piece facing for it, my mom taught me how to do them when I was first learned to sew and I have used it numerous times. So cute in print.
Two great ideas - linen and a one-piece facing! That would sure make the topstitching easier. @vivmom made it in linen and it was really cute - definitely inspired me!

I agree with everyone. This is a great well made tutorial. I love this dress with piping. Thank you for that pocket tip. The inside of the dress is just as nice as the outside. Love love the fabric. Perfect choice for this pattern.
Every time I watched you sew this dress simp 8640 I promised myself I am going to make this dress but never did Today I will purchase the pattern. You made it seem easy Love it
Thanks for showing this cute dress. After watching your entire video, I purchased it and will find a pretty fabric like yours. I’ve just started sewing again after many years & need some cool shift type dresses for this hot, humid south Florida weather. I’ll let you know how it turns out!
Oh what a pretty dress! And you know I love the color too!! Your sew along was beautifully done and great tips! Yes ma’am these sew alongs are a ton of work, but you’ve found a way to master it! 😉🥰
Loved the pockets and I liked how you did yours! Great tip on how to relocate a pocket too! Awesome! Loved added piping to accent the details of the garment! When I have finished seams on shoulders and the facing, I just make sure main body (dress) shoulders go backward and facing seams goes forward. I love your dress!
Oh, my mind. It needs some tweaking, if you know what I mean! But we lifetime sewers are so fortunate to have all that experience behind us - I bet you have tons of great ideas that would make this even better.
Great tutorial with thorough explanations. I have this pattern for about 2 years. I always have doubted whether it would look good on me and not like a potato sack (I like fitted clothing on my bodytype). You convinced me to make it for this hot summer. I will size down, leave about 2,5 inches of ease at my bust and use my high bust measurement instead of my bust measurement.
Very nice video... I've been sewing for over 40 years. I'm very tall and hard to fit. I'm going to try this pattern. Thank you! and.... Thank you also for calling us "Sewing Friends"... and not calling us "guys". It seems women have come so far from the past, but have now somehow become "guys". "Hey, guys!" is so commonly heard... even with mixed groups. No thank you... whatever I am I'm never going to be a guy. I will probably always be a sewing friend!! 😊 New sub. 🎉
I hope you like this one. I bought it originally for my daughter #2, but when I saw photos of it on Instagram and TH-cam, I decided to try it for myself. What a surprise, since the pattern envelope at the time gave no indication that it'd be anything more than a potato sack! That "guy" thing bugs me too. We're all sewing friends!
Great sew along 👏👍love this pattern as well ,haven't hack it that much yet, have keeping the pockets but obviously replaced them, I use bias tape around the neckline and all other raw edges as armholes and hemline, and French seam inside like that finish. Don't have 5 or six of them yet but I have 3😊
Jen, great, great tutorial. You did an awesome job. Very simple, to the point and easy to understand. Also, I’m glad you covered the way you do the pocket again. I had been meaning to ask you to send me the link to the original video in which you covered it first. Looks like you’ve been getting a lot of sun🙂
Thanks so much, Marisol! Here's the original pocket video: th-cam.com/video/F6y4wvnkqRw/w-d-xo.html Hope it's helpful. And yep - doing those laps whenever I can!
Jen this is a fabulous sew along thank you so much. Beautiful blue material, suits you to a T. Clear, precise and always giving us options. The dress is next in line to make just not sure of fabric choice, that’s what I actually take more time deciding than probably sewing 😂. X
Thank you so much Carole! I was sure I missed some things but I'm glad to hear it was helpful. You will love this dress. Try it in a rayon challis, it feels and drapes fabulously.
I am waiting for you to say "I'm Jen and this is my lanai". I have this pattern I just have to find it. I need to make this pattern. I think I would omit the pockets. I still have not ordered from Hawaiian fabric mart, but I recognize that print. You shared a lot of good advice for making pockets. I have been taking one stitch across a corner for decades. It is 1 of the best pieces of sewing advice I have ever received. the piping is a great touch on that dress. I absolutely agree with you about how to finish that center front seam.
So timely, purchased the pattern and double guase for the dress last week! As soon as I get the top I'm working on finished I get to work on the dress. I've thought about putting a pretty embroidery on the pocket. Wanted to put wooden beading around the hem but it is $17.00 a yard- YIKES!! Can't wait to use your tutorial for this dress, thank you.
Wonderful job on the video! And wonderful job on the dress! I bought that pattern on your recommendation but haven’t made it yet. I am almost finished organizing my patterns like yours are done. I have about 350 patterns, so it has been a chore, but I love having “catalogues” to flip through. I haven’t touched the children’s patterns yet but it will not be difficult as I have far fewer of them! Thank you for all of your inspirations!
My pleasure Linda! I hope you really like this dress. And you're so right - it's a pain getting all the patterns done but having those binders is really nice and helpful. I can't remember where I learned the method but boy I like it!
I love this dress. As a plus size I have avoided making anything for myself since I got plus size but I think I will give this a go. How much longer did you make your dress? I have the ugliest legs. I also have shoulder problems so have a hard time getting out of pull over the head dresses could I put a zipper in the back? Thanks
Thanks Rita! I think I added about 6-7" but it all depends on how tall you are and where it falls naturally. It may have been more like 5". It's cut oddly at the hem, and I cut mine straight across before deciding to go back in and do the side seam cut-outs. So while I tried to keep it consistent, I knew I was going to adjust it later. Best to just hold up the pattern pieces and go from there.
Those are some really good tips Jen. I’ve been sewing a long time and it’s so nice to learn something new, that I hadn’t thought of. Great hints and tips! 😘 I really like the emphasis on the bodice pieces with the piping. It really shows off the design elements.
Thanks Trish! Had to come up with something just a little different for this one - and I was so pleased with the way it turned out. I'm so glad you liked it too!
I am more of a quilter than a garment maker. But, this dress is soooo cute! I wanna try to make it. I don't have a serger machine, how would I finish the edges without one of these?
Oh sure, there are lots of ways to finish seams. Just check Professor Pincushion on TH-cam or you can Google it - there are TONS of tutorials on seam finishing.
Jen please don’t assume no one is making the binding. Many of you followers are quite able to accomplish that. As for those of us who are new I would have loved to see you showing instructions for piping. You’ve made the dress look within reach. Thanks so much. BTW Nit sure if your aware but Missouri Star Quilt Comping in Hamilton Missouri have bought n opened a shop just dedicated to Nancy’s Notions. I hear they have a lovely tribute to her there also.
Thanks Peggy - the quilting company has quite a success story, I loved watching a documentary about them. And that's wonderful about a shop dedicated to Nancy's Notions! I'd love to visit if I'm ever though there. Thanks for the info.
Hi, I'm a little late to the party, but this dress and video inspired me to start sewing again. I also want to make this dress longer I'm short-waisted and 5'7". My question is how much fabric did you insert to lengthen your dress? Thank you for such great videos, I'm am now a loyal subscriber.
I love Lily Pulitzer! Man the finishes on the inside of those ready-to-wear LP pieces are fantastic. Lining, bias bound edges - so professional. I love the look but I'm impatient and just want it done. Still, it would be worth doing!
The dress is lovely. I will be searching for the pattern when I go to Joanne's this weekend. I think I would like to do a bodice lining instead of the facings. Can you see a problem arising with that method? I would also like to do pockets in the side seams instead of the patch pockets. I do not even have the pattern yet, haha. We shall see. Thank you for the tutorial, very helpful.
Nope, I hadn't thought of lining it but that's a great idea! You could only do the front, though, unless you want to do a full-on lining for the whole thing. The back is cut in just two pieces, with a center back seam. No closures.
Jen I loved the tutorial! TY! Question pls! I am short 5’. I can’t figure out how to shorten the bodice piece. My waist & the pattern waist do not match. Do you know how or where I could shorten the bodice. I wish there was a line across I could follow. You are the best! Love your videos!
A lot of fun, watching you sew ,the blue floral
This pattern is just my cup of tea, and I love the piping feature. Thank you.🍸

Just found your channel and subscribed. Love this dress. Thanks for sharing options for the pattern. Many ways to make this.
I'm so glad you're here (in the sewing room, as it were) Patty! Welcome!
Beautiful! I love how easy the construction is.
Wonderful! It's so easy to wear, too!
Looks lovely. Thank you for your instruction.
My pleasure 😊
Hello Jen thanks for sharing I’m at the beginning of studying English and I am going to begin sewing with your lesson nice to meet you
You can do it!
Great sewalong good tips
Thanks Robin!
Beautiful dress! I Like the corner & serger tips too.❤️
I'm so glad those were helpful. Nancy Zieman was truly the best sewing teacher I ever had - every week on PBS!
Love the pattern & your fabric choice. Great job!
Thank you! 😊 Hope it was helpful.
Thank you so much ❤️ I have this pattern and your video is very helpful. Bridget R
I am so glad to hear that! Mission accomplished 👍
Oooh I'll be interested to hear how this works in double gauze. 😳 that wood trim! Pretty embroidery on the pocket - I'll have to try that!
Great. Thank you. I’m a new beginner and you gave me confidence to at least try it
You can do it!
Great tutorial, I have made this dress and agree about the pockets, I took them off they were far too low as I am only 5ft 1 ins. Thank you.
My pleasure!
I have a pattern that I love, it fits my shape, I've made it 9 times in lots of different fabrics and colourways.
When it works, it works!
Your dress is truly lovely and the colour is fabulous, really suits you.🌹
Thank you so much, Eileen!
This is amazing. Just made two of these. Thank you xx
Fantastic!
I love this dress. As a plus size I have avoided making anything for myself since I got plus size but I think I will give this a go. How much longer did you make your dress? I have the ugliest legs. I also have shoulder problems so have a hard time getting out of pull over the head dresses could I put a zipper in the back? Thanks
Thank you. I learned a lot from you. I do like a wide pocket so I would use a square pocket but make it wider.
My pleasure - and great idea on using the right pocket for you. Yet another thing I love about this pattern.
Very nicely done. I may have to get this pattern and add length. How much did add to the pattern? Thank you.
Great tutorial! Great info! You look beautiful in that color!
Thank you so much!
Love your dress very nice x
Thank you Eileen!
Your fabric looks like a "Lilly Pulitzer" fabric! CUTE dress-I want to make this one. Thank you for sharing.
I love Lily Pulitzer! Man the finishes on the inside of those ready-to-wear LP pieces are fantastic. Lining, bias bound edges - so professional. I love the look but I'm impatient and just want it done. Still, it would be worth doing!
Great job on the sew along Jen. Joann's has a sale coming up so I may have to purchase this one. Thank you.
Oh no, another pattern sale at Joann's? I'm doomed . . .
Cool dress! Great tutorial!
Thank you! 😊
Thanks for sharing
My pleasure
Do you think if i put puffy sleeves instead of sleeveless, would it look cute?
Sure! I haven't done that yet - maybe I should!
I think you can just draw a line, as long as you do it parallel with the waist seam. I'd try that.
