Hearing how tRoP writers handle Tolkien’s work reminds me of this statement from The Return of the King “The old wisdom born out of the West was forsaken. Kings built tombs more splendid than the houses of the living and counted the names of their descent dearer than the names of their sons. Childless lords sat in aged halls musing on heraldry or in high cold towers asking questions of the stars. And so the kingdom of Gondor sank into ruin, the line of kings failed, the white tree withered and the rule of Gondor was given over to lesser men.”

All hail the rings of power. The modern Iliad of our time. This show is a perfect encapsulation of our current culture…morally bankrupt, narcissistic, shallow and incompetently executed. I hate everything about it and yet this is the actual best Hollywood is capable of atm. It is just sad at this point.

Morgoth should take notes! Even he could learn a thing or two from them.

You can appreciate how dismally bad this whole storyline was, if you just imagine Fake Saruman walking up to Fake Gandalf and the Harfoots in episode 1, and saying "hey, I'm an Istar too, just like you. I know your name. Wanna talk?"
And then Fake Gandalf says Yes and the story ends.
Literally everything Fake Saruman did was completely unnecessary and only gave Fake Gandalf a reason to reject him. Even the acolytes he sent in season 1 were unnecessary. The entire storyline wouldn't have happened if he had just walked up to him and asked him to join him.
Sauron's plan this season was completely nonsensical and self-defeating, but Not Saruman's plan was even worse.
And about those acolytes, didn't they believe in season 1 that Fake Gandalf was Sauron, and seek him out to worship him? But now their master knew he was an Istar all along and was actually looking for an Istar? They just completely changed their motivation and allegiance in between seasons, it's so bad.

Good thing that there is no such thing as canon in Tolkien's universe. It means we can also throw RoP in the bin.

They're going to argue that "they're only betrothed, they're not actually married yet!"
The problem is that's not what betrothal is. Betrothal is not simply "modern engagement". Betrothal means you're already bound to one another, you just haven't consummated yet. Making betrothal just a synonym for "we're engaged!" is a modern concept (engagement in general is a modern concept).

Prequels are so creatively bankrupt to begin with. You already know what happens to any of these characters that are relevant. Even Tolkien realized his rewrite of The Hobbit to tie it more to LOTR was a waste.

It's incredible that anyone read the inane plot line for the harfoots and Gandalf and thought it was worthy to actually put on film.
And how many times did Gandalf scream, "Nooorrriii!" this season?!?

Sorcerer Tim being convinced by Dangalf to go to ME, getting there first and being trained before becoming evil really makes no sense with the established timeline (not that anything else does). But why did Bombadil train him? Was he also told about the evil of Sauron (who doesn't even do a single evil thing until the last couple of eps, so hadn't when Dangalf spoke to Bombadil either)?
Thought experiment: Tim comes to Rhûn, an amnesiac following stars just like Dangalf, with a companion he befriended on the way. They get separated, with Tim's companion being captured by the raiders while they were still kings or whatever their backstory was, and Tim finds Bombadil. Bombadil agrees to train Tim, who then starts getting visions of his friend in peril. Bombadil pulls the same shtick about saving one life versus the whole of ME. Tim believes him utterly, and though it breaks his heart he abandons his companion to torment and death, holding on to the thin thread of reason that in doing so he might save countless others. Then he discovers it is a test, and he has failed. The thread snaps. He amasses power, power to avenge his companion, and to ensure he will never be in a position where someone like Bombadil can give him such a screwed up ultimatum. He destroys the kingdom of the raiders (and their faces?), and starts getting ideas about supplanting the very evil he was supposedly meant to destroy. Thus Bombadil creates the Dark Wizard by being a complete jerk, only to pull the same thing with the next wizard to come along.

Wait... what happened? Tim the Dark Wizard knew Gandalf and revealed himself to be evil; the psycho hobbits wandered off; Gandalf got his stick and name and sang Tom's theme song?! That's gotta be significant somehow- it'll pay off next season. Or was that the payoff of 2 seasons?

To be fair to their depiction of Isildur stealing another man's wife ...first it echoes Uther Pendragon but I guarantee they weren't thinking that, and also...he is the one who fails to destroy the ring after the last alliance...so he is painted by Tolkien as selfish and corruptable

The Blue Wizards were not mentioned in the Appendices, and were only mentioned indirectly in Lord of the Rings when Saruman mocked Gandalf, saying that he wanted "the crowns of seven kings, and the rods of the Five Wizards". It took a while before JRRT considered the background of the remaining two wizards, and of course these ideas never reached a 'final' form (which is why I think that Dr. Olsen is not completely wrong in dismissing the idea that the fannish term 'canon' applies reasonably to Tolkien's legendarium). Peter Jackson was kind of pushing the boundaries of his IP rights (and quite unnecessarily, except as fan service) when Gandalf referred to the Blue Wizards in the 'Hobbit' film.

      @jrconway3 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

There's still five wizards directly mentioned in LOTR, though, so I don't think there's anything wrong with mentioning the blue wizards. Not much is said about them, so you can do a lot with them.

23:54 I'm not sure this isn't just a middle finger to everybody who enjoys stories: "like, it's fiction so we can show anything and none of it matters." And it is very sad that the only characters who come through with enjoyable character for you are the non-Tolkien ones- I'm not sure I agree, but I only saw season 1 and it was not very memorable, so I can't really say. None of the legendary elves had enjoyable character, though, in my view.
