But then the question becomes what it really is to 'support Ukraine'. Is it, for example, arming them so that another hundred or so thousand can die on top of the number of Ukrainians lost already? Or is it supporting and facilitating them to try to negotiate the best terms they can to ensure that Ukraine remains as much an independent integral state as possible?

It is also a known fact that Britain's very successful Aircraft Carrier/Swordfish attack on Italy's Taranto Harbour in November 1940 was so devastating to the Italian Navy (3 Battleships sunk and damaged) and admired so much by the Japanese Navy that they copied it for their attack on USA's Pearl Harbour one year later.

It's interesting to compare people who support Ukraine and those who don't. In the first case they are usually recognised scholars, analysts, experts, who have been studying international relations for years, just like Mr.Marshall. Under the second category usually fall the persons who hadn't even known where Ukraine is on the map before the war started, but they think that they understand better than anyone the situation in Ukraine and the best course of action for their country. The first example that comes to mind of such a person is M.T.Green. I think for any person with at least some amount of critical thinking it must be obvious, that Ukraine's ability to defend itself is within the utmost national interests of the West

While I harbor significant reservations about Trump and find his actions often bewildering, I acknowledge the importance of Europe and Britain assuming greater responsibility in matters of defense. It is undeniable that the United States has provided substantial support in the past; however, it is imperative for our future security that we invest appropriately and enhance our defense capabilities. Recognizing this necessity is straightforward, and our actions today will undoubtedly be scrutinized by history.

We should have seen the writing on the wall decades ago. Europe does need to take responsibility for its own defence and maybe just maybe the US could and should pull out of NATO and withdraw their forces from Europe.
I doubt they will though as Europe is a happy hunting ground type market for the US for their goods and services and the investment opportunities which the US can exploit. Should their military go so should their marketplace and what do you think the chances then would be of the Orange cult leader waking up and smelling his own incontinence pads? US business would do the American version of a defenestration on him pretty tut suite.
No America - you want to harvest Europe for the almighty dollar then you continue to contribute to the defence of the dollar orchards. Or don't and we'll see the consequences of that - and btw so will the US see the consequences of that too.
Delighted to see Europe standing on its own two feet and announcing to the world at large the rules have changed and some of them may not like it.

One of my late colleagues was a former Polish diplomat attached to the Polish embassy in Berlin before 1939. I have no doubt whatsoever that Tusk’s warning is reminiscent of a former Under Secretary of State Vansittart at the end of 1936.

    1. One member of the Duma submitting a draft bill to parliament does not make it the view or the policy of the government.
    2. Look at the impact of the end of the Soviet Union on Russian society in the 1990s, then you'll understand why Putin described it as a catastrophe. If you want to know what Putin thinks of the Soviet Union, consider his famous quote that: ‘anyone who doesn’t regret the passing of the Soviet Union has no heart. Anyone who wants it restored has no brains.’
    3. Tim's argument seems to be that war between Russia and a NATO country is only likely if NATO ceases to exist, which as he concedes is not going to happen. By his own logic, whether Ukraine 'wins' this war or not has no bearing on the likelihood of Russia invading a NATO country.
It's in Ukraine best interests to negotiate a settlment to end this conflict as soon as possible. Ukraine is never going to win this war, even if it got all the support it asked for. Delaying reaching a settlment is only going to cost Ukraine more land and more lives.

Did I understand Tim Marshall correctly, he drew a parallel between Germany's involvement in the Spanish Civil War and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. I see no parallel at all; the Russian invasion of Ukraine was prompted by the treatment by Ukraine of the Russian-speaking people in the Donbas and by NATO's unwillingness to stop expanding towards Russia, which was a serious security concern for the latter to put it mildly. Where is the parallel Mr Marshall is speaking of. Having experienced first hand Russo-phobia by a Pole to what extent is Donald Tusk fuelled by the same feelings? Correct me if I'm wrong but, unlike the West, Russian military engagements have tended to be much closer to home. The West, America in particular, wants its sphere of influence to be worldwide, a comparable aim has not been demonstrated by modern Russia to the best of my knowledge. As is the norm the causes of the Ukraine-Russian war was not mentioned in this interview for the simple reason that, based on the historical context, the West are entirely to blame for the conflict. Was Russian seen as a serious / existential military threat by the West before the events in Ukraine took place, I don't think so. According to Tim Marshal NATO is far stronger than Russia. The West has miscalculated, got itself into a position it never dreamed off, and now has to talk up war because it's messed-up big time. It chose to ignore another countries genuine security concerns and is paying the price.

The problem with the comparison between World War II and today is the nukes. Russia is a nuclear armed country and NATO is a nuclear armed alliance. This is the most important reason why there've never been direct confrontation between Russia and NATO, and most likely never gonna be. Now, it's not impossible but very unlikely.
If Russia would do the most extremest move and attack on NATO, it would be totally different what they have gone through in Ukraine. The losses and hits Russia have suffered with Ukraine so far, would be nothing compared what they'd face with NATO. Also, no more "red lines" the impact of that war would effect deep inside Russia, like in Moscow, and we are not talk about few home made kamikaze drones hitting here and there, but a massive NATO air strikes leaving cities as a flaming ruins.

It would destroy both sides nobody can win a nuclear war and you are right people have to stop comparing the World War ll era to today because the military technology is so much different no nuclear weapons except for the U.S. in 1945

The general consensus amongst analysts is that if Putin succeeds in Ukraine, we will have a window of around 3 years before he is ready to attack NATO territory. The cost of arming Ukraine with what it needs may seem high, but it is chicken-feed compared with the cost of allowing Putin to succeed. Europe needs to step up fast, it is madness to leave its security at the mercy of political trends in the U.S. which has less at stake in this conflict. Trump may have rowed back on his previous comments but he is still fundamentally a NATO sceptic who would be likely to betray Eastern Europe one way or another.

If he wanted to attack THAT, he would have done it in front of Ukraine, through the Baltic States and the Kaliningrad region. The media feeds Europeans outright lies in order to support the population of their government. There is no connection in the war in Ukraine and the attack on NATO. Putin would have attacked long ago if he wanted to. Yes, the defeat of Ukraine is the defeat of Europe, but not military, but political.

I don't see it that way at all, Ross.
Russia is winning. They're single handedly defeating an army that is trained, armed, paid for, supported in every way by the entire western world.
If you do a bit of reading about Russia's military strategies it's very plain to see how they're going about the war.
I presume you think they're unimpressive because the war wasn't over in three days and the frontline doesn't move?
It's not how they do things.
      Ukraine didn't stand a chance.
Russia will crush the country. They'll slowly keep applying more and more pressure.
It's a totally different approach to western military philosophy.
We try to quickly knock out the enemy at the beginning of a war then clean up what's left.
Russia grinds at the enemy from the start. Slowly. They never let up. As the war progresses and the enemy gets weaker and weaker Russia applies more pressure all the time.
When Ukraine breaks and surrenders Russia will be at the strongest they've been throughout the war and the violence and brutality against Ukraine will be at its highest point.

They sell unrefined oil and gas. Thats it. They are selling only to China and India, neither of whom are buying in Rubles. The loss of the EU consumer market is a HUGE loss to the Russian economy and cannot be replaced by India or China.
