There's a level in Super Mario 3D World where the flag is right there but then it just grows wings and keeps flying away. It's a very hard level but it's pretty fun. For those of you curious it's called The Great Flag Pole and it's in the first bonus world, World Star

I'm no expert, but in the second troll level (Kerzo Block), it looks like the first spike kills when you walk off the Bullet Bill cannons. Perhaps the cannon height is putting you a subpixel down or something, low enough to trigger collision with the spike, but jumping and landing on the semisolid keeps you high enough to avoid them?
Ah, someone explained it shortly after. Something about running makes the launchers shift the hitbox.
God I love watching Dave put his foot in his mouth for 20 minutes.
Did he ever realize he could just go back up into the area with the fire flower at the bobomb with the P switch behind it?

Anyone who hates "Tainted Love" needs to hear the original. No, not the Soft Cell version from the 80s, that was a cover, I'm talking the original original, from 1964, by Gloria Jones.
And while you're at it, check out the original version of "I Got My Mind Set on You" by James Ray from 1962, another 60s song that eventually became a huge 80s hit for someone else.
That someone else is George Harrison, I believe.

Spike block is not smidge higher... Bullet bills are a smidge lower so if you jump over launchers you are safe but if you walk you hit the spike
With the spike at the beginning, I think it's that the Bill cannon is on a very slightly lower platform than it, so you're touching the spike's side sometimes when you run from it.
