    I really like the look of this air rifle and will probably be making a purchase soon in .177.
    I like the idea of a 2 stage trigger even if it is quite heavy.
    As a tool for harvesting food during any sort of SHTF scenario this fits the bill.
    I already own all manner of small calibre rimfire rifles and an FAC PCP air rifle but a non-FAC air rifle is always great for day-today rodent control without running into problems with the neighbours.
    Although the target test was none too good for accuracy (if the bullseye was the target) the majority of the shots were well grouped so once the scope is zeroed in the accuracy is very acceptable for a springer.
    The trick is to be able to get close enough to the rabbit / pigeon and that is where a guy with a cheap air rifle who has good field craft will bring home food when a guy with poor field craft and an expensive PCP comes home with nothing.
    Now where's my wallet?
    Thanks for the review.

    Well we bought the Lightning SE for my Bro, standard ambidextrous beech stock as my bro liked the 'relatively' light weight, got a 'value' package deal with a Hawke 4-12x50, very nice light field kit, right now the rifle outshoots both of us making 2" or less groups at 25 yards on the indoor range, guess we need to practice that Artillery hold as the BSA kicks more than my TX200 MK3. I see the BSA running around £100 to £200 used on various websites depending on condition. New muzzle energy is averaging 11.6 ft/lb's with 14.5gr RWS Superdomes, pushes over 12.3ft/lbs with 16gr AA Diablo's, this may drop once 1000+ pellets have been fired, am not certain when the chronograph we used was calibrated as it was provided free on the range, my TX200 showed similar numbers.
    The scope supplied with the BSA was already fitted with the mounts but not fitted on the rifle dovetails, the rings were shaken loose off the scope after 100 or so shots, out came the aforementioned 'nail varnish - threadlock', no further issues though no fault on BSA's part bar a now tatty breech seal appearing 200 to 1k shots from new. Rifle appeared to be dieseling out of the box, some smoke/mist noted in the breech which did clear after 50-100 shots on the back garden where we had some fun with knockover targets. Spring guns do require a 'run in period' in my opinion both when new or after a service - rebuild or lubrication as I feel the mechanical parts need to bed in from new or when things change with lubrication.

      Thanks Phil, great info there and lots of valuable information. Surprised it ran so high out of the box and dieseling is probably due to shipping oil in the barrel, hence probably the high ft / lbs it made. It should / would have settled down. The BSA Lightening is not even a mouse on a wheel when compared to the TX200 or HW97. They are far superior, but then again a lot more expensive. My lightening was my 1st real air rifle, a great introduction to the sport.

    After searching for a how to video for zeroing a scope, yours popped up second, that led to your beginners' guides, then this video popped up in the recommended list. Thank you for producing these clear and concise guides, they have been very useful. I use a BSA Supersport springer with a Hawke scope myself, mainly for "plinking" but we do get a few rats visiting.
    Suggestion :- Cleaning and caring for your rifle for beginners.

    I've just bought a used Lighting , Same as yours , It came with a Hawke 3-9'50 IR scope , Padded gun bag, Two tins of pellets , And three steel knock down resettable targets , Rifle came with the BSA CD , found it on Shoot mart for £170 ..... Certainly there are decent deals out there .

    Nice handy review thanks, my bro is wanting a Rifle and this BSA is top of the list. For those screws, studs and anything else threaded that comes loose, try some nail polish/varnish if you can't find threadlock, sets solid enough and easy to crack off with a screwdriver or other appropriate tool for maintenance - cleaning, easy to remove with an old toothbrush and solvent or acetone.

    I own one myself, the .22 gas ram version with wood stock. I love the rifle, but it initially had a problem with the receiver screws coming loose, I tried blue Loctite which proved insufficient after a handful of shots. I ended up going with red Loctite which did the trick. As far as the end piece on the barrel coming loose, plumber's tape does the trick.
    The rifle is a tad loud, and diesels a bit depending on pellet used. I found it to be pellet fussy, It prefers RWS Superdomes for maximum accuracy. It is a very accurate rifle and a pleasure to shoot. It's weight makes for a sturdy feel, despite the somewhat strong recoil.

    Hi buddy, got one of these and believe me when I say it's not heavy, I also own a 'TXHC' now that's heavy, I actually bought the rifle because the weight of the 'TX' can become a bit of a bind over longer shooting forays...

    Dry firing is not recommended. Also another good habit to cultivate is holding the barrel with your other hand whilst inserting the pellet.
    I had the same rifle in .177 cal and found it (me!) incapable of grouping under 5 inches at 25 yards.
    I should have bought the .22 cal version which would have had a slightly milder firing cycle. I would have kept it had I been able to get reasonable groups. It's muzzle energy was a measured 11.8 ft lbs which, for such a light weight rifle, made it very snappy. A shame because I liked its tactical look and feel. But in your hands you gave a very good account as to how these rifles can perform. I now wish I hadn't sold mine!
    Thanks for a great video.

    The synthetic stock also has a pocket in the pistol grip and I do not recommend "dry firing" this gun as the piston was designed for compressing air not smashing against the end of the piston chamber.

    I think it is a far better gun than you give it credit for,and whilst it falls short of a good field target rifle it is a Great field rifle an unsung hero that deserves better recognition from the shooting fraternity and more investment from BSA. rather than less from Gamo.

    Allways keep your pellets to your right and hold that berrel with your left hand and you load with right hand automatically becuase your pellets are to your right , when you put your pellets to your left side , your automatically going to release that berrel to reach for a pellet as shown in this video . Thanks for showing how not to load a springer , i know this video is old and you know better by now , but im not being sarcastic, im glad you did this so my point can be seen , i allways keep my pellets to my right when shooting my springer because even i some times get to relaxed in shooting and slip up . Just some advice for any new shooters who are learning to shoot springers , unless your a lefty this will help ...

      Hi Steve. Like George Hale said, I 'found' it after watching a BAR video (with 'BSA' in the header). AirgunTV's just returned from a TH-cam creator invitation at the London 'mothership' (!) and I can tell you that you'll never be able to find the key to the algorithm that's projected this video of yours 'upwards'. I think even the YT engineers don't know it!!! But the good news is that they have... and that's a sign that you're doing something right. :) Keep up the good work - and great surname, BTW!!! ;) ATB - Nige

Metrics are good - very good, actually (which helps with the YT algorithms) - but I've a feeling it's going to take a while to get the 'numbers' up...

    Barrels are hammer forged. Very quick process. Machines that do it are very expensive. Makes them very hard, and improves longevity. Accuracy at 100 yards is no better than one MOA. Not brilliant, but perfectly ok for air guns.

    Many people rubbish this (and other) springers due to the fact that they haven't a clue how to shoot a springer. Hence they complain about shots going 'all over the place' and return to the comfort of their PCP's. To shoot a springer well takes time, practice and patience.
    Something which many are unwilling to spend these days. Many of the Weihrauchs are heavy guns, which give the illusion of being able to shoot a springer well due to the inertia of the gun.
    There is also a lot of Weihrauch snobbery around. Sure they have been good guns in the past, but less so now with poor quality control and finishing issues. If I pay Weihrauch prices do not expect to have to 'fettle' the gun in order to be satisfied with its performance.
    BTW This gun does not have a silencer. It is simply a cocking aid which is why it is loud.
    The BSA Lightning SE in beech has a proper silencer and is much quieter.

    Taking mine back today! 22 GRT😬 Screws coming loose after a dozen shots, then losing zero, obviously. The stock doesn’t feel sturdy enough to tighten either, doesn’t screw down like a hardwood should. I suppose Threadlock, would help, for a period, but I’ve owned this rifle for two days, and know my springers. After ten shots, I’m lucky to get, ‘tennis ball’ size groups at 19 yds🫣. With my 99s, all ten shots will make a baked bean sized hole at 19 yds😬 Why should i have to put adhesive on the stock screws? It’s either a design fault, or cheep wood. Sad… as its a lovely looking gun, shoulders well, and compared to my TX and Weihrauchs is rather a lightweight. Springers, are difficult enough to shoot with great accuracy, which is why i put a tuning kit in all of them, but the ‘wandering zero’ on this thing, is off the scale🥺

  • @--SD--

    I have one of these, bought it a good 3 years ago and tbh I hardly ever use it because it's just so damn loud. Even for a budget springer it's loud and the recoil is way too much. I've been trying to find reviews such as this to compare mine to and everyone elses seems to be far more tame. It's accurate enough so I can't see there being anything mechanically wrong, I've chrono'd it and it's coming in about 11.4ft/lb depending on variables. Wish I knew someone else who has one so I could compare them as I'm convinced mine isn't as it should be. Anyway decent review, you've been berated enough about the dry firing so I won't pick on you further :)

    • @airgunology
      @airgunology  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Mine is loud too and has a good kick to it even at 10ft lb power. It is a cheap, but good, springer and we sometimes try to compare them to more technical and expensive rifles. It certainly is not a quiet backyard plinker. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Is that a 1/2 inch thread on the end of the moderator?
    if it is 1/2 inch thread then you should get a swift stumpy silencer, it's one of the quietest silencer around for an Air Rifle and it costs around £70

      Webley are owned by Hatsan now I think and Hatsan are very well made. Their cheaper guns are well thought of being good value. Some SMK guns are not bad either. One or two other cheap guns aren't bad.
      Weihrauch, AA, Walther, etc you know you're getting quality, even with them though they'll be the odd lemon get through. I'd much sooner get a HW99s than a lightening and they cost less money. My friend was shooting one at the outdoor range the other day, hitting shotgun shells on their side most of the time, 40 yards away and not even rested, I'd like to see him doing that with a lightening.

    A good general review, except for that damaging dry-fire (a no-no) and the way you load the pellets. I have this "Tactical" in .177 ("made in Birmingham"), and find it difficult to fully insert pellets in the tight barrel without the edges sticking out ever so slightly, but nevertheless sufficiently for the pellets to be "chewed off" at the back slightly when closing the barrel. It may be silenced, but I still find it extremely noisy in terms of spring vibration, as compared to an non-silenced HW 95 fitted with a venom kit. I feel that the "Tactical", which has an interesting design, could do with a good tuning job to improve overall performance. Ideally, it should be a gas ram.

    I'm trying to find a PCP that I saw on TH-cam but with no luck. It looked like a fx impact with interchangeable barrels it was regulated and used a screw on air tank the reviewer said to personally know the manufacturer and said they were from Estonia I think, not sure. The butt of this rifle had a small air capacity which did not look like the f x.I can't find it or a review. Any help would be appreciated .

      My last two scopes have been Hawke Vantage 3-9 x 40's. Have one on my bsa lightning xl se grt. Great scopes for £50-60. They don't have parallax correction; I don't see the need for it on usual air rifle range shots.

    I don't know why BSA call that a silencer or moderator given it does nothing to reduce the noice. It is also more like a shroud given all it is is a hollow tube with no baffles in it at all. Also the barrel also only goes half way up the shroud like cylinder. I don't suppose anyone has designed baffles to fit into the cylinder to reduce the sound?

    • @airgunology
      @airgunology  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on your power output. If UK under 12ft lb then yes as any well aimed head shot would with a .22, it will take down a rabbit or tree rat. But you will need to practice to ensure you can hit consistently as springers are of course harder to hit consistently than a PCP. Personally with a 12ft lb rifle like this, I would not be taking shots at quarry such as rabbits at any distance over 40m. You can get this is left hand as well. If you want an alternative, try the Air Arms 410 pcp. Check out my review I did of it recently on the channel. That would be perfect.

    Hi Steve after watching this video I just would like your penny's worth on my air rifle. I bought a second hand kral magnum 22 air rifle with a hawks hd3-9x40 scope for £140 from my nearest retailer. I don't know if you used one before and after watching your video on cheap verse expensive pellets and I now realised that the pellets that I was sold from the same shop are very cheap and nasty pellets and so have to bay some other pellet to improve my grouping

    • @airgunology
      @airgunology  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, dealers tend to sweeten deals with a tin of pellets. Usually they give you the cheapest pellets to save themselves money. They should not really do this as it is just causing problems for you and them when you are not happy. Borrow some different pellets from friends, try them out and see what your rifle likes. You can buy sample from freabay if you look around and can save money.
